Out of nowhere I am suddenly a bona fide member of the netbook craze, and I am very impressed with this little guy! This review will highlight the best and worst aspects of the Acer Aspire One Netbook. The Aspire One is not without its flaws, and for a power user, even the OS needs a good bit of tinkering to get the full potential out of the machine. There is a great user community already, and plenty of information on how to best make use of this little marvel.

We were able to test the Aspire One with the 6-cell battery – at present only available as an optional extra through Acer’s online store for $108.90. This sticks out 3cm from the rear and brings the total weight up to 1.3kg. With the screen set to 40 per cent brightness and all power-saving features off, it ran for 5 hours and 6 minutes with Wi-Fi on. Couple that with the 3-cell battery, which runs for 2.5 hours, and you’ve easily got all-day battery life.

There is little doubt that netbooks are here to stay, at least for the foreseeable future. A recent news article reported that netbooks are now more popular than Apple’s iPhone, which recently overtook the Motorola Razr as the most popular cell phone based on sales. The current generation of netbooks are not notebook/laptop killers, but once equipped with Intel’s Dual Core Atom processor in the coming months, they will be one step closer. Doubling the processing power will no doubt have an impact on performance and things like HD video playback should become a reality.

The Acer Aspire One cuts a pretty good figure. Price wise, it is definitely an interesting alternative as this Linux-based pocket-sized machine that can be used on the go almost anywhere (until the battery runs out 2.5 hours later) retails for only $329. Productivity while out and about is not a problem as Open Office 2.3 is already preinstalled. Firefox gets the user onto the Internet, and an email client http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/E-mail_client and a messenger are also installed. The games are simple, but entertaining, and in some cases have the potential to become addictive. It is a pity that the installed versions are limited demo versions, particularly as the majority of the games are available free of charge as Flash games on the Internet. The media player is picky. The audio section can handle MP3, OGG and WMA wma files, but MP4/AAC files are ignored.

Although I have sounded negative in a few areas of this review, I really do like the Aspire One. Can I recommend it as a main laptop for a student? No, I cannot. You really do need something that’s larger, more powerful and more durable to serve you through college. If you’re on a tight budget, i can understand the appeal of a $349 laptop, but why not spend $50 - $100 more and get a 15.4″ screen Compaq C50Q or Celeron powered Acer laptop? The larger screen and fuller sized keyboard is a really big deal for usability.

For those looking for an even lower cost budget netbook, the Acer Aspire One is a worthy candidate to think about. This computer has solid build quality to handle being tossed around in a backpack or purse, and modest performance to handle common software applications with ease. Battery life isn't the best with the 3-cell model, so if you spot the 6-cell/160GB version in stock, it is highly recommended that you pick that. While it is not the easiest netbook to upgrade, it does offer a large storage drive to start with and an SDHC expansion slot. Starting as low as $349 it is no question that it blows the socks off the current competing models, which are priced at $499 and up.

Since the prices of mini-notebooks have seemingly been escalating with each new model, we’re pleased to see one for just $349, adhering to the idea of the “low-cost PC.” The 9-inch Asus Eee PC 901 XP ($520 with rebate at Newegg.com, as of this writing) has a faster solid state drive, but the Aspire one offers much more capacity (120GB vs. 12GB) and costs $171 less. And even if you opt for the Aspire one with the 6-cell battery, you’ll still be paying $121 less. The touchpad is small and the vertical buttons are awkward, but we prefer the Aspire one overall because it offers a superior keyboard and much better bang for your buck. In the suddenly crowded field of mini-notebooks, the XP version of the Aspire one offers the best value.

The Aspire One is everything a Small, Cheap, Computer should be. The build quality is excellent, the feature list is not half bad, and it certainly looks and feels the part. Indeed, it's the best-looking SCC we've seen. On the down side, the standard battery is poor and - with the Linux versions at least - getting online using a 3G network isn't straightforward. Of course, the really great thing about the AA1 is that you can tuck it under your arm, go our and feel far less of a tit than if you were carrying a MacBook Air. Worth buying for that alone, if you ask us.

Based on our experience with other netbooks to-date, we're understandably quite disappointed with the Aspire One. With most new netbook models' battery performance lasting three hours or upwards, it's quite a let down on Acer's part to say the least. All hope is not lost however, as there have been news floating around the interwebs of a 5200mAH 6-cell battery from Acer (which is not cheap though). It does have some nice things going for it, such as a larger keyboard, which has a pretty good layout for easy typing. While the screen was bright and clear, the extra space at the sides could have been utilized for a much bigger screen. Software performance was just satisfactory, though as we mentioned in our previous page, power users may want to look for alternatives to the default Linpus Linux Lite OS provided if one is still keen on the Aspire One. The operating system provided, while restrictive, does allow for a simple and easy to use experience for the more novice folks through its nice GUI interface. That's not to say the Aspire One is bad as it's just pretty hard to justify getting one when there are other options available on the market.

As for usability, stakes are covered. The keyboard is surprisingly roomy, with no tricky layout problems to work around, beyond the slightly small function keys - not a huge problem. The touchpad on the other hand is the focus of some frustration, being both tiny and annoy to use for clicking on things thanks to the vertical mouse buttons. A travel mouse is definitely something worth budgeting for. At least you won't need a webcam or microphone, as these are integrated above the screen. If you’ve been hedging your bets when it comes to buying a low-cost laptop along the lines of the Asus Eee PC, you’ve been wise to keep your wallet closed for so long. Asus may have all but created the market for the ‘netbook’, but now other laptop manufacturers are jumping on the bandwagon and the latest is Acer with its Aspire One. All netbooks have so far followed the same ultra-portable laptop design to some extent and the Aspire One certainly doesn’t buck the trend. By far the best netbook we've seen so far and while the battery is a let-down, the rest of the Aspire One more than makes up for it.

To try and differentiate its latest mini-laptop from the current rash of releases, Acer is referring to its Aspire One (£199 inc. VAT) as a 'two-handed internet device'. The idea is that you'll use it for browsing the internet and consuming media instead of using it to create music and movies.  However, what the Aspire One does have going in its favour is the price. While many ultra-portable notebooks are hitting the shelves at £350, this one is only £199. The Acer has had less durability issues and has a form that some would prefer to the Asus, particularly if you are going to use a usb mouse and bypass the touchpad altogether

In Nederland kost de geteste uitvoering met Windows XP bij de meeste winkels 399 euro. De prestaties zijn prima, maar daar staat tegenover dat de batterij vrij snel leeg is en je grote kans hebt op een scherm dat licht flikkert bij de lagere helderheidsinstellingen.

Going by all the usual industry metrics Acer sells more netbooks than anyone else. This is a big deal given the size of the market and growth expectations, but despite its dominance it hasn't until now had a 10in netbook even though the market has been moving in this direction. This is partly testament to the quality of its first outing, the Aspire One, which sported an excellent keyboard for the form factor and very attractive pricing, but also the power of Acer's distribution system. When you're flogging the things in Tesco at £180 a pop you're bound to rack up a few sales, even if the people buying it have no idea what's in the box! Acer's decision to move into the 10in netbook sector makes perfect sense, but its execution doesn't. Despite the larger chassis it has chosen not to improve the keyboard and though the price and spec are in line with expectations, the D150's design and ergonomics don't compare well to the competition. In a market where very little separates one product from another, these are significant failings.

First thing I noticed is that it recognized all the hardware right away. I ran windows update and received all the updates and this PC is amazingly stable. The Aero interface runs flawlessly, with all the effects. Some stuttering but only noticeable by picky users like me. Windows 7 looks beautiful on this machine and really compliments the high quality LCD included with Acer. Even the slide show wallpaper feature runs nice. The wallpapers transition every 5 minutes and do so very smoothly even with full CPU load!

Currently two models of the Aspire One A110 range are available, one featuring flash (SSD) storage and the other a more traditional hard drive. If you plan to do work on the go, though, or play games, you'll find the stuttering SD very painful – and with the hard drive model's price tag around the £220 mark, it's not so much of a bargain. In that case you'll want to consider looking elsewhere, such as the Asus Eee PC range.

Unlike the original Aspire One, there’s less to get excited about by this me-too Windows netbook. But while it offers the usual roster of netbook facilities, there is the just-higher than average netbook speed performance, and the distinction of two memory card slots. Battery life is good too.

  There's no doubt that the D250 is a step forward compared to the original Aspire One. We were, however, hoping for more of a leap forward from Acer.   Mini-notebook screen sizes have been creeping up ever since the 7in Asus Eee PC launched in 2008. Now 10in screens are the norm, and that's exactly what you'll find on the Aspire One D250. The Aspire One D250 is well-built and comes with a good range of features. It's by no means perfect, though, and as with all mini-notebooks, it's important to remember that only suitable for relatively basic computer tasks. A good hard disk and processor with decent battery life, but few distinguishing features given the price.

It's merely an aesthetic overhaul, though; it keeps the original Intel Atom parts and the below-average (89 percent) keyboard. Still, the street price remains constant at $300 ($350 for the six-cell configuration). The Acer Aspire One (D250-1165) is now thinner and lighter than its predecessor without raising prices.

Usability is paramount when it comes to netbooks, and given the updated keyboard found on Acer's Aspire One 751 it's hard not to feel a little hard done by that the company has opted to use the old Aspire One A110 keyboard on the D250. The new machine is not without its charms, but with the similarly specified Eee PC 1000HE boasting 802.11n, a better keyboard and a barn-storming nine-hour maximum battery life, we suspect many will opt for Asus' offering, especially since it costs the same. Naturally, the Eee PC 1000HE's long battery life means a bigger battery and, in turn, a heavier 1.45kg netbook – it's almost twice as thick, too - it's up to you whether you think it's worth the extra 350g

Acer’s flagship netbook gets smaller and lighter. Overall, we’re very impressed with the Acer Aspire One AOD250. It performs very well, and at $298 ($349 with a 6-cell battery), it’s competitively priced compared to both the ASUS Eee PC 1008HA ($429) and the MSI Wind U123 ($379), which, while $80 and $30 more expensive, respectively, have faster processors and long battery life. Still, we’re at a loss as to why Acer felt it needed a nearly identical system in terms of price and performance, albeit one that’s marginally thinner and lighter. We would much rather give up that extra 0.3 inches of thickness for a wider keyboard and touchpad. But, as far as netbooks go, the Acer Aspire One AOD250 is every bit as good as its predecessor, in an even smaller package.

Price tag on our model was around 370€, which is not modest especially for a netbook. Since slightly faster Acer Aspire D150 can be purchased for 70€ less, all comes to one question: Do you need larger display and keyboard? On the other side, when compared to MSI X-Slim X320, Acer Aspire One 751 isn’t that much expansive any more, isn’t it. Since there are just few netbooks with resolution larger than 1024x600, Acer Aspire One 751 comes as natural choice for all users that seek comfortable working experience combined with exceptional portability and autonomy.

Used to be, people were content with a 10.1-inch screen on netbooks. The Acer Aspire One AO751h is a newcomer that goes bigger--to 11.6 inches. While that seems like the sweet-spot screen size for a portable PC (whether netbook or ultraportable), some design missteps with this model lead Acer astray. It's a shame. The AO751 potentially has so much right, but a few key bungles keep me from throwing my weight behind Acer's big-boned netbook. Maybe a deluxe model with a better CPU or a discrete GPU? Maybe less preinstalled gunk to clean out? Whatever the case, as shipped today, this model is tough to recommend.

If your expectations of an 11.6-inch netbook are a device solely for browsing, email and MP3 playback then the AO751’s 5+ hours run-time may tick your boxes, especially if you can find it significantly cheaper than the $399.99 MRSP online and if you do plenty of text entry. That to us screams of a niche too far, however, and we’d rather spend a little more for a stronger processor that can do the screen justice. To make no small amount of noise about the high-definition resolution of your display and then package it with a processor that can’t keep up its side of the bargain smacks of marketing cynicism. The AO751h-1522 certainly puts in a better showing than the earlier versions, but it’s still far from our first choice of budget ultraportable.

Acer's Aspire One 751h is a compromise in features among netbooks that some may like and others could hate. It uses a larger, higher resolution display that gives it a much better working environment. This also gives it a larger keyboard that is surprisingly pleasant to use over long period. The downside is the slower Z series Atom processor that makes the already slow netbook experience even slower. At least it is able to provide long running times with the lower wattage processor and has a very attractive price point.

The definition of a Netbook keeps getting fuzzier around the edges, with displays growing from the original 7-inch designs, and the selection of CPUs expanding to include Intel, AMD, and Via. If we are to take 12-inch systems such as the HP dv2 and Samsung NC20 as Netbooks (we've so far let them slip in under the wire), than an 11.6-inch model is a sure thing. Call me a notebook geek, but I can't help but get excited anytime a netbook advertises a full-size keyboard and screen specifications other than 10 inches and 1,024-by-600 resolution. The Acer Aspire One (A0751h) was full of promise when it was announced back in early April 2009 as it featured the biggest netbook keyboard to date and the first-ever 11.6-inch widescreen. Battery life, conducted with MobileMark 2007 tests, delivered a superb 7 hours, 15 minutes. For $350, with a unique widescreen and full-size keyboard, we can ignore the Acer Aspire One (A0751h)'s slow Atom processor and the crappy mouse buttons.

The appeal of the new Aspire One 751h is not so much what this netbook adds to Acer's netbook line, although we do like its roomy 11.6-inch screen and new slim design. Rather, the most significant update is what it does away with. Gone is the trademark cramped Aspire One 89-percent-wide keyboard, replaced by a full-width model that's a pleasure to type on. The Aspire One 751h has one of the better screen-and-keyboard combos we've seen on a netbook, but its performance disappoints.

But if all you want is a netbook—and not necessarily an 11-inch one—there are several comparably priced (albeit, thicker) 10-inch models, such as the $399 Toshiba NB205 and the $389 ASUS 1005HA, which run faster and last even longer.

When we come to summing-up our feelings about the 751 it is difficult. We want to love it: it looks great out and about, but has so many issues, it is a nightmare to live with. Yes, the increased screen size is welcomed, but there isn't the performance boost to support it, so it still stumbles through HD content. Sure there could be the opportunity to boost the RAM, but it needs to be remembered that this is still a humble netbook. Overall it's slightly disappointing then, as we had high hopes for the 751. It looks stunning, but the performance isn't compelling enough to make us part with our cash. The crown for the king of the 11.6-inchers is still available.

Acer Incorporated est une multinationale taïwanaise fabricant d'électronique. Sa gamme de produits comprend des ordinateurs de bureau et des ordinateurs portables, ainsi que les assistants numériques personnels (PDA), des serveurs et des supports de stockage, des écrans, des périphériques et des services d' e-business pour les entreprises, le gouvernement, l'éducation, et les particuliers. Acer est le troisième plus grand fabricant d'ordinateurs au monde (par le chiffre d'affaires), après HP et Dell Inc. L'entreprise possède la plus grande chaîne de magasins d'informatique franchisés à Taipei, Taiwan. D'abord nommée Multitech, elle a été fondée en 1976. Gateway et Packard Bell sont économiquement liés à Acer. Les parts de marché en ce qui concerne les ventes d'ordinateurs personnels en 2007 (études de marché IDC): HP 18,9%, Dell 16,4%, Acer 9,9%, Lenovo 7,5%, Apple 5,7%.

Acer critiques

Seuls les vieux jeux peuvent tourner de façon fluide sur ces ordinateurs (S'ils ne sont pas trop gourmands en ressources). Les coeurs à mémoire partagée de cette catégorie ont l'avantage d'être moins chaud et moins gourmand en énergie. Pour le bureau, internet, l'édition de photos, et le montage vidéo ces cartes graphiques n'ont aucune restrictions.

Intel Graphics Media Accelerator (GMA) 950: L’Intel Graphics Media Accelerator 950 est une carte graphique intégrée à la carte mère sur les chipsets Mobile Intel 945GM. c’est une version accélérée de la GMA 900.

Intel Graphics Media Accelerator (GMA) 4500MHD: Carte graphique intégrée (Mémoire partagée) livrée avec le chipset GM45(Montevina). Grâce à deux shaders de plus et une vitesse plus élevée, beaucoup plus rapide que la GMA X3100. Mais toujours pas envisageable pour les joueurs (Les jeux DirectX 10 ne seront pas jouable ou alors à de très faibles résolutions). Le processeur vidéo permet de décoder la HD (AVC/VC-2/MPEG2) , pour la lecture BluRay sur des processeurs plus lents.

AMD Radeon HD 6290: Carte graphique intégrée à certains processeurs Ontario pour netbook (ex: C-60) avec un décodeur UVD3 vidéo et sans mémoire dédiée. Comparé à la HD 6250, la 6290 possède un Turbo Core pour un overclock automatique à 400MHz.

Ses cartes graphiques ne sont pas faites pour le jeu. Et même si ils tournent, ce sera avec des erreurs d'affichage et un framerate ignoble. Ce cartes graphique sont totalement incompatible avec les joueurs! les applications de bureau et d'Internet, ne sont pas un problème pour ces cartes graphiques.

Intel Graphics Media Accelerator (GMA) 500: Puce graphique intégrée (embarquée) sur les chipsets UL11L, US15L, et US15W avec un noyau propriétaire PowerVR SGX. Support de DirectX 10.1, mais ne convient pas aux jeux 3D en raison de la faible fréquence d'horloge (100-200 MHz UL11L - US15) et des 4 shaders seulement. Le décodeur vidéo intégré accélère la lecture de vidéos HD (MPEG2, VC-1, AVC).

Intel Atom:

Le processeur Intel Atom est un microprocesseur 64-bits pour ordinateurs portables petits et bon marché, les MIDs ou UMPC. La spécialité de la nouvelle architecture est dans le mode d'exécution "in order" (au lieu de l'habituel et plus rapide mode d'exécution "out of order"). Par conséquent, le coût du transistor de la série Atom est beaucoup plus faible, et donc moins cher à produire.

Z530: La version économique du Atom N270 avec le support de la Virtualisation et des techniques d'économies d'énergie. Les performances sont équivalentes au N270 et donc fait pour les tâches légères.

N280: Processeur mono core peu puissant mais pas cher et économe. il est moins puissant au Mhz que ls Core Solo ou Celeron M. Comparé aux N270, le N280 est à peine plus puissant.

N270: Un processeur pas cher pas puissant mais avec une basse consommation. Mais au Mhz près il est moins puissant que la concurrence.

Z520: Processeur mono-core très peu puissant. Avec plus de fonctions (économies d'énergie, VT-x) que la série N des Atoms.

Intel Celeron M: La caractéristique de ce processeur est la vitesse, qui est à peine plus lente qu'un Pentium M. Cependant elle peut changer la vitesse pas dynamiquement comme le Pentium M et a besoin donc de moins d’énergie. Elle est également disponible en tant que version de basse tension avec la consommation courante très petite.

743: Processeur Ultra Low Voltage (ULV) (basse consommations) pour subnotebooks ou netbooks. Il ne supporte pas Speedstep (il consomme donc plus), 64 Bit, et la Virtualisation matérielle (VT-x).

AMD C-Series:

C-60: Processeur basse consommation Dual Core Avec GPU intégré. A cause de la fréquence basse, le CPU sera aussi rapide qu'un Atom à 1.6, mais le GPU intégré est plus puissant.

C-70: Dual Core basse consommation avec une carte graphique intégrée. À cause de sa fréquence très basse, le processeur devrait être aussi rapide qu'un processeur Atom avec un seul cœur mais possède un GPU intégré plus rapide.
