The Asus G74SX is a decent and reasonably priced gaming notebook that will handle most games just fine. If you’re looking for something similar to Alienware styling but without the S$4k price tag, this might be a consideration but if not, there are definitely better choices out there.

The G74SX is part of the Asus Republic of Gamers (or RoG for the initiated) series. Like the G53SX, the Asus G74SX is a powerful machine and perfectly adapted to gaming use. Like the G53SX however, it lacks a Full HD panel and Blu-ray player and therefore only receives a four star rating.

This hard-working powerhouse needs some powerful cooling-capability, and the Asus G74 features a unique vent design which sucks air form underneath the machine and then channels it out the back of the laptop, away from the user. The fan is not at all noisy. Under moderate usage conditions the battery lasted three and a half hours, which for such a large and powerful notebook is perfectly acceptable.

On Asus’ Web site, the company claims that this notebook can hit P2008 in 3DMark11 and P9180 in 3DMark Vantage--but we hit P2222 and P10012, respectively. It’s not often that lab-tested scores actually surpass what’s advertised. In terms of performance, we were a little surprised at how inconsistent the G74SX-A1 scored; sometimes it rocked the competition and other times it fell short.

80% Asus G74SX: A Monstrous Gaming Powerhouse

This "mobile" gaming machine really does have everything you need for on-the-go power-computing, even though it weighs almost as much as a lightweight desktop. Asus packs a lot of power into the G74SX, and the system has a fairly svelte body to boot. Now, if only we can get a review model that doesn't have a faulty LED backlight.

ASUS G74 Review: A Subtle Redesign

If there is any problem, it’s the fact that the price of $1799 is high for a laptop which, despite a substantial redesign, is only marginally quicker than its predecessor. The comparable G73SW-XA1 model is available for $1399, and I’m not sure if the new model is currently worth $400 more. Certainly the whopping twelve gigabytes of RAM and massive 1.5 terabyte hard drive are impressive, but they do little to improve gaming performance.

NVIDIA GeForce GTX 560M: Successeur de la GeForce GTX 460M basée sur la puce GF116. Les performances sont 13% au dessus de la 460M, avec une consommation comparable.

Ces cartes graphiques de milieu de gamme peuvent faire tourner tout les jeux récents de façon fluide. Les jeux gourmands ne peuvent être joués qu'avec les détails réglés sur moyen.
