We've already discussed our thoughts on the UL80Vt and G51J - you can read the details on pages two and three. Both are great laptops, and while we didn't give either the coveted Gold award they are closer than we've come in quite some time. For those that are wondering, anything earning a Bronze Editors' Choice is (at least in my mind) a 90% score; Silver means 93%, and Gold means 95% or higher. Basically, Gold awards are reserved for unequivocal recommendations, and we do have a few minor complaints with both of these laptops, mostly oriented around the LCDs.

ASUS' UL80Vt is a 14in notebook that's built for people who want plenty of features and good speed, yet want a laptop that's reasonably light and capable of lasting a long time away from a power outlet. If a reasonably thin and light notebook with excellent battery life sounds like your cup of tea, then the ASUS UL80Vt is for you. At 14in it's easy to use, yet not a burden to carry around. It's well built, looks good and performs well, but it does lack some connectivity options such as eSATA.

The UL80Vt isn't perfect though. While the keyboard was stellar and the multi-touch aspect of the trackpad were a plus, we still aren't into the dimpled pad and the glossy LCD. For those working outdoors, this screen could potentially be a major nuisance. Also, the relatively low 1366x768 resolution is nothing to write home about, and the slower 5400rpm (320GB) hard drive isn't all that quick when it comes time to boot or load applications for the first time. Still, we think the positives far outweigh the negatives when all things are considered. For just over $800, this is a really well-rounded machine.

Of the numerous 14-inch Optimus notebooks we've reviewed so far, the ASUS UL80Jt stands out as one of the best. For $869, you get excellent endurance for a system this size without sacrificing too much performance. If you're looking for something with a little more graphics muscle, then the Gateway ID49C08u ($849) is the better option. But if all-day mobility trumps gaming prowess, then the UL80Jt is the way to go.

Asus has its work cut out for it in finding a market for the UL80Vt-A1. This ultraportable laptop has a higher price ($849) than many similarly specced competitors, though it's in the same ballpark as its $800 stablemate, the Asus UL30A. So how does Asus justify the price tag? The UL80Vt-A1 covers its base respectably. Strong battery life and surprisingly responsive performance give Asus's latest rig two solid legs to stand on. The only major drawbacks here are the price and that wretched mouse.

The ASUS UL80Vt costs more than other ULV thin-and-light notebooks, but it’s worth the extra money for the better graphics performance. If you’re looking for something lighter and don’t need an optical drive, you may want to consider either the 4.4-pound Dell Studio 14z or the 13-inch ASUS UL30A, which weighs only 4.0 pounds. But if you want all-day battery life and good performance in a sleek 14-inch system, the UL80Vt is a very good choice.

When it comes to slim 13- and 14-inch laptops, there are currently a lot of options worth considering. A thin design and Nvidia Optimus automatic-switching graphics make the Asus UL80JT-A1 an initially appealing laptop, but looks can be misleading: the underwhelming CPU and battery life are both serious negatives.

At first glance, there's a lot to like about the thin Asus UL80J-BBK5. A 14-inch screen, Core i3 processor, Nvidia Optimus graphics switching, and a DVD burner suggest a complete package in one of the thinner mainstream laptops we've seen, all for $799. The thin design and Nvidia Optimus automatic graphics switching on the Asus UL80J-BBK5 are appealing, but the underperforming CPU and battery life on this compact 14-incher are disappointments.

I wasn’t at AnandTech when Jarred first looked at the UL80 last year, but I was basically of the same opinion in that it was a nice display away from being a Gold Editor’s Choice unit. Seeing a notebook with the ability to combine a dedicated graphics card, 10+ hours of battery life, and decent overall application and gaming performance into a thin and light enclosure was very exciting, in that it was a combination that was rarely seen before, especially at a reasonable price.

Asus critiques

Ces cartes devraient être capables de faire tourner tout les jeux d'aujourd'hui, mais la plupart d'entre eux uniquement en détails moyens ou faibles et avec des résolution basses. Les plus vieux jeux ou les jeux moins gourmands restent jouables avec de beaux graphismes.

NVIDIA GeForce G210M: La NIVIDIA GeForce G210M ou G 210 M est un adaptateur graphique DirectX 10.1 pour ordinateurs portables basé sur le noyau GT218. Comme son prédécesseur, il dispose de 16 shaders, mais les fréquences d'horloge ont été considérablement augmentées. Grace au processus 40nm (contre  le processus 55nm de la G110M) la consommation électrique maximale reste la même.
Le noyau de la G210M est appelé en interne GT218 et, selon Nvidia, est basé sur l'architecture actuelle haut de gamme des pc de bureau (GTX série 200).

NVIDIA GeForce 310M: La GeForce 310M succède à la GeForce G210M avec une vitesse équivalente (shader +30MHz à 1530MHz).

Intel Core 2 Duo:

C'est le successeur du Core Duo avec des pipelines 5-20% plus rapides sans consommation supplémentaire. Comme une addition à la conception du core duo là existe un quatrième décodeur, une SSE-unité amplifiée et une unité logique arithmétique additionnelle (ALU). Le core 2 duo pour ordinateurs portables est identique aux processeurs de core 2 duo d'ordinateur de bureau mais les portables fonctionnent avec des tensions inférieures et une vitesse de Frontside. L'exécution des portables également synchronisés est 20-25% inférieure à des ordinateur de bureau en raison de fréquence d’horloge inférieure de Frontside et plus lents de disques durs.

330M: Le Core i3-330M est un 350M plus lent sans Turbo Boost avec une fréquence max de 2.13 GHz. Avec l'Hyperthreading, 4 coeurs sont virtuellement disponibles. La carte graphique intégrée (GMA HD 3150) et un contrôleur mémoire DDR3 intégré sont inclus.

14.0: La taille d'affichage de 14 pouces est un mélange entre les petits formats de petits portables et l'affichage standard de 15 pouces.
La raison pour laquelle tant de personnes possèdent des écrans de taille moyenne: cette taille n'est pas épuisante pour les yeux, n'a pas besoin de trop de courant et les ordinateurs portables peuvent rester tout à fait compacts.
