The PRIV isn’t perfect, as noted throughout this review, but I have tried to be as diplomatic as possible, highlighting why certain things might not work quite as well as they should, commending its positives, and attempting to explain the presence of certain performance gremlins. This is a new beginning of sorts for BlackBerry and the true test of the PRIV is not sales or this first batch of reviews, but how it develops in the coming months once BlackBerry has some user data to work with and can update the software accordingly.

BlackBerry DTEK50 Review: Great Software, Lumpy Performance
Source: Know Your Mobile Anglais EN→FR Archive.org version
The BlackBerry DTEK50 is definitely not perfect. It has its issues; most notably battery life and performance. However, the handset — for its price and features — is very impressive. I like what BlackBerry attempted to do here and I have even more respect for them as a company for even considering it.

BlackBerry DTEK50 vs BlackBerry Priv
Source: V3.co.uk Anglais EN→FR Archive.org version
Neither phone can easily be mistaken for a BlackBerry, but you could argue that the Priv with its slide-out Qwerty keyboard comes nearest. If a physical keyboard is top of your wishlist there's only one logical choice here, and the recent reduction in price also makes a strong case for the Priv. The DTEK50 is just a little bit 'meh', while its predecessor at least has something about it and has a stronger specs sheet.

If you had to ask me if I would recommend the Priv as a worthwhile purchase? That would be a tricky one to answer. For brand die-hards you will of course pick up the Priv and learn to love the open OS from Android. All the applications that are available will breathe fresh life into the Blackberry offering. If, though, you are not huge BlackBerry fan and just want the best for your money, then it’s still worth a look if you do not mind the large design.

You – and I – will be wanting the much-rumoured Android version of the Passport that I still think Blackberry would be crazy not to announce in the first half of 2016. It will be solid, better-conceived and cheaper than the Priv – and will make you more productive than you ever imagined. Really. And I’ll be at the front of the queue to review it.

If BlackBerry had trimmed some features and delivered an Android phone with a keyboard at a lower price point, we'd have been far more enthusiastic, and the company might have found itself some new fans. However, everything launched since the Z10 seems pointlessly overpriced, chasing an audience that might not even exist. All predictions of BlackBerry's demise have thus far not come to pass, but we're not sure how long that can continue at this rate.

The app can, for example, monitor what resources each app used, and log it with the time and place. In a demo, BlackBerry showed a popular torch app on Android had activated the microphone of the device on 3 different occasions recently, complete with the time and place where it was activated, along with the number of seconds it was active. Sounds like a very useful way of identifying rogue apps.

While I always argued that BlackBerry should’ve invested in Android right from the start, BlackBerry 10 has matured into a wonderful OS- possibly the finest mobile OS I’ve used. If you’re in that camp, you’ll find the PRIV frustrating and will miss the intuitiveness and fluidity that BB10 offers. Sadly app developers continue to ignore BB10 so PRIV is the solution for those that. It brings full Android support and all the apps with it. The choice is yours to make.

BlackBerry Priv review
Source: GSM Arena Anglais EN→FR Archive.org version
It constitutes a huge step forward in a few respects. It is definitely a big leap ahead of its BlackBerry siblings in terms of hardware, but, perhaps more-importantly, it opens up a whole new realm of possibilities now that it runs Android natively. Come to think about it, this is hardly a new development path for BlackBerry, which has long showed a lot of affection for the Google's sprawling app ecosystem. Whether or not the Priv will be met with approval and set BlackBerry on a new development path is yet to be seen, but it is undeniable that despite its flaws, it is currently one of the best business smartphones out there.

Despite my moans over the unnecessarily messy software and the weight and sheer bulk of the thing, there’s something about the Priv that I find appealing. Perhaps it’s seeing BlackBerry (at last) getting itself on the right track with its hardware and software, perhaps it’s because the Priv attempts to do things differently, but this is a smartphone that I’ve enjoyed using in the time I’ve had it.In a world of bland, homogenous smartphone design, the BlackBerry Priv stands out as a beacon of individuality, a smartphone that does everything a standard Android smartphone can, but without sinking into morass of mediocrity. It isn’t the greatest phone around, but at least it’s something different.

I’m really glad that BlackBerry made the Priv. I hope they sell enough devices to keep in business and keep trying to innovate themselves out of the hole they made for themselves. I never thought I’d say those words, but it’s true. We need better competition in Android because we don’t all need black slabs that do the same thing with slightly better battery life or slightly better cameras to differentiate. I want to see more than that, and I think the Priv is a great first step towards that reality.

I'm thankful for the time spent with the BlackBerry Priv since I now won't make the mistake of buying one. There are plenty of better Android smartphones available for less, including the Nexus 6P, Note 5, LG V10, and LG G4. If you want an Android phone, then buy one of these instead. If you want a BlackBerry, then pick up a Passport or even a BlackBerry Classic.

The BlackBerry Priv is a device I really want to endorse – and not just for nostalgic reasons. It packs an innovative keyboard and a beautiful display into a unique form factor, and it brings some really thoughtful software improvements that make Android more useful and customizable. Also, its elegant sliding form factor breaks up the never-ending parade of static slabs we’ve been complaining about for years. The BlackBerry Priv is a well-made Android phone with a unique feature set. We commend BlackBerry for turning its hand to being an Android OEM, and the result is a fast smartphone with a great display, hardware keyboard and solid build and design. Battery life could be better, but our main quibble is with the price: at this price the Priv needs to be a world beater. And as good as it is, it isn't that. Still, if you want an Android with a hardware keyboard and some BlackBerry features, this is the phone for you.

The Priv is very much a first attempt at integrating a platform with an app stack that doesn’t always mesh smoothly with the underlying platform; there are a few signs the Priv was rushed onto the market: there are quirks and annoyances. Ultimately, how you feel about the BlackBerry Priv likely has a lot to do with your last phone. If you’re a longtime BlackBerry user who’s looking for something that finally—finally—gives you a hardware keyboard with a legitimate app ecosystem and some of the manufacturer’s legacy features, this is your phone. But Android and iPhone users will be looking for a better camera, better integration between BlackBerry and Android, a better feeling when you’re typing on the bottom of that touchscreen. The Priv feels like a first step toward a device that could bridge the work-play gap—a promising first step, but one the company really should have taken years ago.

In comparing it to what’s out there, however, it’s going to mainly hinge on whether or not you want a physical keyboard. Touchscreens have seemingly eliminated the need for physical keyboards, seeing that they’re generally faster, but the convenience is always here with the PRIV. The other matter to think about is security and privacy, which the PRIV has a solid lockdown on, but for those users who want more freedom in customizing the experience, you’re certainly not going to have that luxury here – albeit, from a security standpoint, your data and privacy are protected.

Qualcomm Adreno 418:
