Critique du Apple MacBook Pro 17 pouces 2010-04

Mise à jour du processeur. Le nouveau MacBook Pro 17" unibody possède maintenant un Core i5, une carte graphique intégrée Intel graphics ainsi qu'une GeForce GT330M. Les performances sont bien meilleures que la version précédente, mais il y a des problèmes à pleine puissance.

 

Le MacBook Pro (MBP) Unibody 17" est le plus puissant portable Apple, avec la version 15"  du MBP, le portable le plus puissant avec Mac OS X. C'est aussi le portable 17" le plus fin pour sa puissance.

Il est possible de rajouter des composants sur le site. CPU plus puissant, mémoire, disque dur ou SSDs et une version matte de l'écran sont sur la liste.

Boîtier

Le boîtier, lui ne bouge pas. Donc on vous conseille de lire notre critique du 17" Unibody MBP de 2009.

Ce boîtier est taillé au laser dans un bloc d'aluminium et son design laisse sans voix. Il est très proche au niveau du design des autres MBP de sa génération. Ce design reste toujours dans l'air du temps après 1 an.

Ce boîtier possède une finition quasi-parfaite. Il ne réagit pas à la torsion.

L'écran s'ouvre largement.

Le toucher est impressionnant. L'impression de perfection est bien là. On regrette le fait que l'avant du repose poignet soit assez coupant à la longue.

Connectivité

Le 17" ne possède pas beaucoup plus de ports que les versions plus petites.

Comparé à la version 15", le 17" possède un port USB de plus et un port ExpressCard34 par contre il ne possède pas de lecteur de carte SD. Il manque des ports assez importants. eSATA, VGA, HDMI, et la liste est longue.

Il n'y a que le lecteur DVD sur la droite.

Le MacBook Pro a tout ce qu'il faut pour le sans fil. Il y a une puce Broadcom (BCM4322) qui gère la WiFI à la norme N. Un y a un port gigabit LAN aussi de chez Broadcom (BCM5701. Il ne faut pas oublier le Bluetooth 2.0+EDR et une entrée infrarouge pour la télécommande.

Le MacBook Pro 17" a aussi les logiciels Apple préinstallé, et c'est l'une des bonnes raisons d'avoir un mac. La dernière version de Mac OS X (10.6.3 Snow Leopard ici) et la suite de logiciels iLife 09 (iMovies, iPhoto, GarageBand, iWeb et iDVD) qui sont des logiciels de qualité professionnelle avec une simplicité ahurissante. Il est très facile d'installer Windows 7 sur cette machine, il y en a pour 4 clics et 40 minutes.

Dispositifs d'entrées

Clavier

Pas de changement de ce côté. Ce clavier reste de loin le meilleur du monde avec son toucher doux et ses matériaux nobles tel que le verre et l'aluminium, de plus il est rétroéclairé.

Touchpad

Le touchpad en verre possède le support de l'inersien dans le défilement des pages (comme sur l'iPhone). Cet élan est pratique dans les grandes pages Web. Il 'y a pas de boutons mais une grande surface vitrée multitouch. C'est beaucoup mieux qu'un touchpad traditionnel pour la bureautique.

Par contre il n'est pas très bien supporté sous Windows.

Ecran

Cet écran 17" LED est très lumineux avec une moyenne de 293 cd/m2 et automatiquement assombrit avec le capteur de lumière (désactivable). La répartition de la luminosité est à 86% ce qui est très bon. Par contre le bas de l'écran est légèrement moins lumineux.

La résolution de 1920x1200 (FullHD). Et enfin le contraste de 726:1 donne d'excellentes couleurs.

Cet écran 17" LED couvre presque tout l'espace de couleurs sRGB donc comparable au MBP 17" précédent. C'et beaucoup mieux que l'écran du MacBook blanc, mais aussi moindre que celui du Dell XPS 16 avec son écran RGB LED.

Avec la luminosité moyenne de 293 cd/mil est possible de travailler dehors. Par contre les reflets sont terribles donc handicapants pour cet usage. Ceux qui travaillent souvent dehors prendront la version matte.

Les angles de vision de l'écran Samsung LTN170CT10 sont très bons à l'horizontale. Mais à la verticale les couleurs changent vite.

Performances

Cette version 17" du MacBook Pro embarque soit un Core i5 soit un core i7 avec une Intel HD Graphics intégrée et une GeForce GT330M avec activation automatique de cette dernière.

On a mesuré les performances avec Windows 7 et 3DMark Vantage de chez Futuremark. La version 17" du MacBook Pro est très bon avec son Core i5. Il est au niveau du HP EliteBook 8440p-WJ681AW qui n'as qu'un Core i5-520M et une carte graphique intégrée. Le SSD multiplie le score. Le Sony Vaio Z11 avec son disque dur 128 Go SSD RAID est 65% avec les même GT 330M et i5-520M.

Par contre ce portable fait mordre la poussière au MBP 17" de l'année dernière avec un C2D T9550 et une GeForce 9600M GT. Le MacBook blanc avec un Core 2 Duo P8600 et une GeForce 320M est battu de 41%. Les Core i7 sont 6% plus rapides (Basé sur les score du MacBook Pro 15 avec Core i7).

Le benchmark le plus connu sous Mac OS X est XBench dans sa dernière version 1.3. Mais la machine donne des scores différents à chaque test. Les performances sont excellentes avec le Core i5. Les performances OpenGL avec la carte Intel sont très basses. Le reste des test le donne vainqueur dans beaucoup de domaines.

Le DPC Latency Checker n'as pas détecté de problèmes de latence DPC sous Windows. Il y à un unique pic à 1083 microsecondes. Sinon on reste toujours en dessous de 500 microsecondes.

La Nvidia GeForce GT 330M du MBP17 est plus puissante que la Geforce 9600M GT. Soit 15% plus rapide dans 3DMark06, et 15% devant la 9600M GT du vieux MBP dans 3DMark Vantage. CLA consommation est la même.

La GT330M (comme dans le Samsung NP-R780) est 6-8% plus puissante dans 3DMark06, et 15% dans 3DMark Vantage GPU.
Le MBP 17 monte le niveau général dans toutes les applications.

Le nouveau MBP 17" active automatiquement la carte graphique dédiée. Par contre cette fonction ne marche que sous Mac OS X sous Windows la carte dédiée est toujours allumée.

La GT 330M est largement devant la carte Intel dans XBench 1.3. Soit 3.3 x plus rapide dans OpenGL, et 23% dans le test User Interface.

Par contre avec la carte Intel seule on a des gros bugs dans les logiciels pro gourmands.

Comparé à XBench, la Intel HD avec 3454 points, est juste derrière la GT 330M (5140 points) dans Cinebench 10 Shading test. La 9400M est proche de la GT 330M avec 4000-4900 points. La 9600M GT vas plus loin à 5100-6200. Peut-être à cause des drivers. Par contre la GeForce 320M du nouveau MacBook est à 4465 points.

Le disque dur Hitachi est moyen avec ses 5400 tours par minute avec une moyenne à 62.4 Mo/s en lecture. Un avantage de ce disque 500 Go est son silence.

La GeForce GT 330M underclockée n'est pas vraiment surpuissante. Elle est entre la GT 325M et la GT 330M et en dessous de la Mobility Radeon HD 5650. Donc les jeux les plus gourmands seront défavorisés (comme Battlefield Bad Company 2). Les jeux pré 2009 tourneront parfaitement. Comparé aux portables Windows 7 17" c'est un peu faible.

La GeForce GT 330M est la carte graphique mobile la plus puissante pour Mac OS X. Les performances OpenGL sont suffisantes pour jouer à Half Life 2 avec tout au max. Par contre pour jouer on conseille fortement Windows.

Un nouveauté du MacBook Pro 17" est le changement automatique de carte graphique entre la GeForce GT 330M et la Intel HD Graphics. Il n'y a pas de pause pendant le changement. Mac OS X ne permet que 2 modes: automatique ou économique. Mais il est possible de modifier ce comportement avec le logiciel gfxCardStatus. Il marche même pendant que Half Life 2 tourne (de Intel à Nvidia) sans pause.

Pour toutes les applications 3d la GeForce 330M est en marche. Il y a quelques problèmes car il y a des problèmes de drivers Intel OpenGL.

Mais la GT 330M est allumée en continu avec un écran externe. Le Mini DisplayPort est directement connecté à la GeForce GT 330M sans multiplexeurs. C'est le cas des portables Optimus.

Emissions

Bruit système

Les ventilateurs tournent entre 2000 - 5370 tours par minute selon la charge. En bureautique on les remarque à peine.

Sous Mac OS X, le MacBook Pro reste relativement discret même sous la charge. Les ventilateurs tournent entre 2700 et 4000 rpm (32-40 dB(A)) dans Half Life 2.

On mesure le volume maximum sous Windows 7. Les ventilateurs tournent bien à 5370 rpm et on mesure 48.3 dB(A). Par contre la qualité du bruit lui même est assez doux.

Température

La surface en aluminum du MacBook Pro est en sujet brûlant. L'aluminium fait partie du système de refroidissement donc il chauffe assez dans les jeux mais c'est tout à fait normal.

Le dessous n'est jamais vraiment frais, mais le maximum est à 42°C. Les repose poignet eux restent toujours frais. On recommande l'usage de smcFanControl pour contrôler à la main la vitesse des ventilateurs. Ainsi il peut rester très frais même s'il devient bruyant.

Pendant le stress test de Furmark et Prime 95 on mesure des températures élevées (CPU 90°C, GPU 86°C) mais avec une moyenne alarmante (CPU 83°C, GPU 82°C).

Haut parleurs

Les haut parleurs sont de bonne qualité pour l'épaisseur de l'appareil. On est loin de la qualité d'une solution externe, mais c'est largement suffisant pour les films. Le volume maximum est assez impressionnant 90 dB (distance: 15cm) (largement supérieur à un MacBook blanc).

Les sorties audio sont parfaites avec un casque Sennheiser PXC 250.

Autonomie

Le nouveau MacBook Pro 17 basé sur Core i5 gagne quelques heures d'autonomie (de 9 h à 11 h). C'est grâce à la Intel HD Graphics, gravée en 32nm. Le MBP 17 se situe à 4-5 h avec la luminosité max et promet surtout 1000 cycles de charge.

Le MBP 17 a une autonomie plus courte sous Windows, on mesure 5.5 h maximum, car la carte graphique dédiée est toujours allumée.

La batterie se recharge complètement en 3h 16 min.

L'appareil consomme moins que la version 2009 avec un chipset Nvidia. Le portable 17" ne consomme que 7.7 watts sans l'écran, WiFi et Bluetooth. Avec la carte Nvidia c'est 3 watts de plus. Le minimum est à 17.2 watts sous Windows. L'optimisation de Mac OS X est totale.

On sent bien la baisse des performances à pleine puissance. Furmark et Prime 95 ont besoin de 80.9 watts ensembles. Prime 95 (CPU) demande 83 watts. Mais l'adaptateur ne fait que 85 watts, ce qui explique beaucoup de choses.

Verdict

La nouvelle version 17" du MacBook Pro est plus rapide et plus Economique, avec le nouveau Core i5 et la GeForce GT 330M. On gagne un peu d'autonomie aussi. Donc pas mal d'amélioration depuis la version 2009.

Les avantages restent les mêmes. La qualité du boîtier n'est jamais dépassée par la compétition. Les excellents dispositifs d'entrées, le silence du système, la bonne autonomie et le très bon écran lui font marquer des points.

On peut critiquer les fait que les performances baissent à pleine puissance à cause de la petitesse de l'alimentation ce qui est dommage.

Apple demande une somme impressionnante pour ce portable. Mais il n'y a pas de compétition au niveau de la qualité totale du produit.

Ce MBP 17" rendra heureux les possesseurs d'une version antérieure à la gamme Unibody.
