Critique du Asus Eee PC 1201N

Asus a souvent été le pionnier sur des petites technologies sympa. Asus propose son portable Ion, C'est à dire une carte graphique GeForce 9400M avec un processeur Intel Atom, Il y a de la concurrence dans ce domaine, mais Asus a plus d'un tour dans son sac, lisez ce test pour en savoir plus.

On liste souvent les modèles américains et européens. Pour l'instant, notre prototype est nommé Eee PC1201N. Amazon.de affiche 499 euro. Asus indique une date de sortie pour le deuxième semaine de Janvier. Notre prototype est une version quasi finale avec un clavier britannique.

La plateforme Ion est présente dans le Eee1201N à première vue, rien de spectaculaire. Le processeur est un Intel Atom 330 cadencé à 1.6 GHz - un dual core, et c'est assez important, vous verrez dans les test que l'on ne ment pas.

Boîtier

Le Asus Eee 1201N est un 12 pouces. Donc c'est déjà plus grand qu'un netbook. Avec sa résolution de 1366 x 768 pixels et son clavier fonctionnel vous avez déjà de la place pour travailler correctement. Mais le Eee 1201N reste très mobile avec ses 1450 g, il peut tenir dans un sac à main féminin.

Le design "Seashell"(coquillage) avec des biseaux partout. Les surfaces sont quasiment toutes brillantes et salissantes. Sauf le dessous qui reste mat.

Comme d'habitude on vous prévient, les surfaces brillantes sont bien jolies au début mais c'est toujours très salissant.

Notre prototype est presque entièrement noir. Il n'y a que les boutons d'alimentation et du touchpad qui soit chromés. Il y a un code de couleur sur le carton pour différencier les variantes du modèle.

Le Eee PC 1201N possède une finition qui lui donne une bonne rigidité. La base est très stable et solide. L'écran aussi est très solide, on peut même le prendre par le bord sans voir de déformation sur l'image.

Les grandes charnières sont assez solides et précises. La fermeture se fait avec la charnière, sans crochet de fermeture il peut s'ouvrir tout seul.

Configuration

Les ports qui demandent des gros câbles sont placés vers l'arrière. Avec le port VGA, l'alimentation et RJ45 au fond à droite. Peut être un peu trop proches les uns des autres, ce qui peut être problématique. De plus, le câble d'alimentation possède un connecteur tout petit qui de débranche un peu trop facilement.

Avec 3 ports USB assez bien distribués, et grâce à l'architecture Ion, un port HDMI sur la gauche. L'image FullHD du port HDMI est impeccable (1920x1080) parfait pour montrer des vidéos ou des présentations.

Pour L'ethernet c'est de chez Atheros (AR8132 Fast Ethernet 10/100), pour la WiFi Realtek RTL8191SE (802.11b/g/n). Apparemment il y aurai un emplacement pour carte SIM.

Pour les logiciels, il n'y a pas grand chose: "Total Media Theater 3" et Microsoft Works avec une vague icône sur le bureau.

Comme pour tout les Eee, vous aurez accès à Eee WebStorage avec le Asus 1201N. C'est de la place supplémentaire sur un serveur de chez Asus. L'idée est bonne, mais envoyer 1Go peut durer plusieurs heures.

Clavier

La clavier gagne de l'espace grâce au grand format de ce netbook. Il ressemble à celui du Thinkpad T61 (285 mm) avec une largeur de 280 mm. Les touches mesurent 14x14 mm. avec des espaces assez larges entre les touches, le clavier est assez ergonomique.

Mais ce sera difficile de juger à cause de la disposition britannique des touches. Mais à part quelques exception à notre avis le clavier sera tout aussi bon en français.

La frappe est courte, ergonomique et nette. Mais la structure du clavier plie trop facilement et si vous avez la main lourde, vous sentirez le pli.

Touchpad

Le touchpad supporte le multitouch, avec zoom, scroll, rotation et bien d'autres. A savoir que le touchpad ne réagit pas aux doigts humides, bon à savoir si vous avez les mains moites.

Les touches chromées sont salissantes et il y a une zone morte qui ne clique jamais.

Ecran

Le 1201N est un géant dans la catégorie des netbooks avec une diagonale de 12.1 pouces soit 30.7 cm. Il a une résolution que l'on ne trouve que sur des 15 pouces, soit 1366x768 pixels donc 16/9. C'est très agréable de travailler avec un espace de pixels comme celui ci.

Premièrement, l'écran est brillant, c'est assez difficile de supporter les reflets en extérieur ou dans certains environnement très lumineux. Et deuxièmement, la luminosité ne dépasse aps les 111cd/m2 au centre. Donc, difficile de bosser sur le transat.

On est à 83.3% de la luminosité du centre sur les bords. Avec un contraste de 222:1, subjectivement l'image n'est pas très lumineuse.

Donc ce sera non aussi pour tout environnement trop éclairé, on sera soulagé que la luminosité ne baisse pas sur batteries.

Le Eee 1201N se repose sur ces lauriers et les angles de visions sont restreints. L'angle d'ouverture de 141° est pratique.

Performances

On passe à un chapitre intéressant du test de ce Asus Eee PC 1201N - au niveau de la performance. C'est la combinaison d'un processeur Atom dual-core et d'une carte graphique Nvidia 9400M, que sous cette configuration on nomme ION. Le CPU Atom 330 est très économique mais possède 2 coeurs. La plateforme nForce 730i de chez Nvidia monte la barre.

L'Atom 330 CPU a un Frontsidebus de 533 MHz, 1 Mo de cache L2, une fréquence d'horloge de 1600 MHz et est gravé en 45 nanomètres. Cette puce ne consomme que 8W. Cependant, la puce prend en charge les applications 64 bits, ce qui la distinguerait également d'autres concurrents qui utilisent noyau unique. La puce simule même quatre noyaux grâce au hyper threading pris en charge (traitement simultané de 4 processeurs possible).

Le TDP plus élevé indique déjà une consommation plus élevée de la puce. Une difficulté supplémentaire est que le CPU ne prend pas en charge Speedstep et donc fonctionne à plein régime à 1,6 GHz, même en mode d'économie d'énergie. Ses collègues mobiles font beaucoup mieux (N270 - C1, C2 et C4; Deeper Sleep, Enhanced SpeedStep).

Si vous comparez les résultats d'un benchmark SuperPi (mono core), l'excitation tombe un peu. Les résultats observés sont mieux que la moyenne du N270, mais le N280 avec ses 1,66 GHz reste en tête.

Le résultat semble le même dans le test de rendu Cinebench. Les puces comparées étaient très proches dans pour le test single-core. Les CPU 330 Atom il est déjà au double de son collège en multicore à 1516 points.

Normalement avec un netbook on attend beaucoup, on s'attendait à mieux avec celui ci mais on ne pouvait pas vraiment le remarquer, par contre cette fois ci il est possible de regarder une vidéo sur youtube et faire autre chose en même temps grâce au dual core.

PCMark 2005 n'as pas fonctionné, il n'y à que PCMark Vantage et le Asus 1201N reste en tête grâce à sa carte graphique.

Donc on en revient à la Geforce 9400M G de chez Nvidia, qu'on retrouve dans la plate-forme "Ion" avec les CPU Atom. Le Asus 1201N est basé sur une plateforme nForce 730i de chez Nvidia. On est entre une Geforce 9300M, et une ATI HD 3450 ou une 8400M GT, mais on descend la barre à cause du CPU Atom, ce qu'on retrouve dans PCMark Vantage, au même niveau qu'une GMA 4500M HD  sur certains tests.
Mais on est quand même au dessus du panier.

On dépasse la limite pour les latences, il faut s'attendre à des problèmes sur certain périphériques, on mesure plus de 2000 millisecondes.

Wie wir testen - Leistung

L'utilisateur traditionnel ne remarquera pas le gain de performances pour les jeux en tout cas. Mais la 9400 soulage le processeur pour les tâches comme la vidéo HD ou la retouche photo (CS4).

Rendu HD

Le but de cette carte graphie n'est pas tellement les jeux mais le rendu de la vidéo HD. Dans une vidéo flash, le 720p passe presque sans trop de problèmes mais le 1080p est à 3 ou 4 images par secondes.

En mettant la toute dernière version de flash, le 720p (23-26 fps) passe sans problème. Avec 23 % d'occupation du CPU en 720p, et un peu plus de 50% en 1080p.
On a déjà parlé des possibilités du CUDA dans notre test du Samsung N510.

Asus' Super Hybrid Engine

Asus a breveté une réelle méthode d'overclocking officielle qui marche très bien avec certain modèles, mais d'autres comme le Eee PC 1201N ne profitent pas vraiment de cette avancée.

Le Intel Atom 330 est à 1600 MHz par défaut. Avec le "Super Performance Mode" on est à 1632 MHz. Soit 2%. Donc complètement négligeable.

Performances dans les jeux

On est en droit de se poser la question quand aux capacités de la Nvidia Geforce 9400M G dans les jeux. On note que le Samsung N510, possède presque els mêmes attributs. Il y a quelques différences avec le Samsung (Ion LE - Ion, N270 - 330, 1GB DDR2-2GB DDR2), mais c'est presque la même chose dans les chiffres.

Par exemple Anno 1404 est en moyenne à 19.1 fps sur le Asus0 1201N avec tout au minimum. Le Samsung est à 17 fps. Des jeux comme F.E.A.R. 2, ont vraiment du mal à passer. On est un peu au dessus du Samsung (19 fps) avec une moyenne de 20.7 fps dans la première mission (800x600, tout au minimum). On a tenté Call of Duty 4 Avec 33 fps en moyenne avec tout au minimum (800x600, low, 0xAA).

Mais des jeux moins gourmands comme World of Warcraft sont très jouables 54 fps avec le Samsung N510 (800x600, low, 0xAA/AF), donc un peu en dessous du Asus.

Les Sims 3 reste jouable avec tout au minimum (800x600, low/off).

En usage très léger on est à 34.8 dB(A). Subjectivement ce n'est pas vraiment audible, ce n'est qu'un souffle distant.

Avec la lecture d'un vidéo HD on monte à 36.7 dB(A). En le poussant dans ses limites au niveau des performances on est à 39.1 voire 42.1 dB(A) mais en pratique c'est rare.

Haut parleurs

Le Asus Eee PC 1201N possède deux haut parleurs à l'avant qui portent vers le bas. Le volume max est satisfaisant mais pas la qualité. Il n'y a aucune basse. La qualité est tout juste suffisante pour rire devant une vidéo de Youtube.

Une grande force des Eee a toujours été leur autonomie. Le Eee 1201N possède une batterie 63 Wh lithium ion (11.25V, 5600 mAh).
Le CPU et la 9400MG ne sont pas les moins gourmands du marché. Mais le 1201N atteint une autonomie maximum de (BatteryEater Reader's test) 299 minutes, soit un peu moins de 6 h, et au minimum 163 minutes, soit 2.5 h avec tout au maximum.

En surfant tranquillement sur la WiFi on est à 255 minutes et 190 minutes en regardant uniquement de la HD.

Verdict

Le Asus Eee PC 1201N a toute sa force dans sa taille. D'un coté cela a un effet sur les dispositifs d'entrées, qui ont une taille de bureau, et les 30 cm de diagonale sont pratiques pour travailler. Mais la luminosité est trop faible à 100 cd/m2. Il faudra travailler à l'ombre.

Le design coquillage du boîtier est fiable et stable. Le Eee 1201N possède une excellente finition à l'exception du clavier. Le clavier est assez bruyant, plie trop facilement et la frappe est inégale.

Le port HDMI est de bonne qualité mais il est mal placé pour les gauchers.

Avec le processeur dual-core Atom et la Geforce 9400M G donne au Asus Eee 1201N une grande puissance par rapport à la concurrence. Le dual core aide dans pas mal de situation mais le gain est limité par les Mhz purs. Ce sont de très bonnes performances pour un netbook mais on est en dessous des portables multimédia. En mettant à jour comme il faut on peut lire de la vidéo HD.

Le portable est assez bruyant même sans rien faire. L'autonomie de 6 h est suffisante pour pas mal de tâches.

Le 1201N est une option intéressante pour les vidéos HD et le surf intensif. Il aura sa chance quand même car sa qualité pour les vieux jeux 3D est notable. Pour 499 euro vous en avez pour votre argent.
