When you look at the key components of a mainstream laptop, the Dell Inspiron 14z (Core i5) excels at every single one them, whether it is excellent battery life (over an hour more than the Asus U46E-BAL5), speed, or its feature set. All this earns this mainstream lapotp our Editors' Choice nod. Peeves like the stiff mouse buttons and port covers are small in the grand scheme of things.

At $829, the Inspiron 14z is a powerful notebook with close to all-day battery life. The aluminum chassis is sleek and sexy, especially in Fire Red, and we like the backlit keyboard. We're just not fans of the port covers or the way the laptop's touchpad handles multitouch gestures. Other than those minor issues, the Dell Inspiron 14z is a very good choice.

The Dell Inspiron 14z ($824 direct, as tested) is essentially the conservative alter-ego of the Studio 14z, as it keeps many of the features that the latter would consider antiquated, such as an integrated optical drive, a VGA-Out, and Intel's integrated graphics. The Dell Inspiron 14z faces some stiff competition from rivals such as the Acer Aspire AS4810TZ-4120 and the Asus UL80Vt-A1.

The Dell Inspiron 14z laptop makes a clear statement: you are probably a student, you want a whole lot of battery life on a Windows 7 machine, and you probably don't care much about performance. Dell has aimed the Dell Inspiron 14z squarely at users who are more concerned with flash than substance, and who consider a 7-hour battery life to be a core quality for a laptop. Students are an obvious demographic here, and they should be able to get their money's worth out of a good-looking machine that won't have them scrambling to find an outlet or leave the library.

Dell has aimed the Inspiron 14z squarely at users who are more concerned with flash than substance, and who consider a 7-hour battery life to be a core quality for a laptop. Students are an obvious demographic here, and they should be able to get their money's worth out of a good-looking machine that won't have them scrambling to find an outlet or leave the library. The Inspiron 1470 is aimed squarely at students, with a stylish look and great battery life, but the overly-polished screen is hard to see.

Road warriors looking for a roomy screen in a thin-and-light notebook will want to pay particular attention to the new Dell Inspiron 14z. The Inspiron 14z delivers a fantastic 14-inch screen, an optical drive, and all-day battery life (it you use it judiciously) in a good-looking package. With a starting price of just $649, the Inspiron 14z is also very affordable. This Inspiron is a full-featured, 14-inch thin-and-light for the small-business and SOHO sets. Its battery life is a plus; performance is merely so-so.

The fact that the Inspiron 14z includes an optical drive while many CULV-equipped laptops do not provides some justification for buying this notebook. However, if performance is more important to you than battery life then the Inspiron 14z probably shouldn't be at the top of your shopping list. Still, if you want a notebook with more power than a netbook and better battery life than the average notebook then the Inspiron 14z is worth a look.

A slim and stylish notebook that lasts over six hours on a charge. The Dell Inspiron 14z offers long battery life, a fantastic screen, and acceptable everyday performance in a compact package. If you want much stronger performance and are willing to sacrifice an hour of endurance, the Dell Studio 14z ($749) makes a better choice. And if you demand even longer battery life and lighter weight, the ASUS UL30A ($799) is the notebook for you. However, if you want an optical drive on your thin-and-light system, the Inspiron 14z is a solid choice.

Intel Graphics Media Accelerator (GMA) 4500M: L'Intel Graphics Media Accelerator 4500MHD (parfois aussi appelé GMA X4500 HD ou d'autres combinaisons) est un adaptateur graphique compatible DirectX 10 embarqué dans les chipsets GM45, GE45 et GS45 de la plate-forme Centrino 2 (Montevina). La puce n'a pas de mémoire graphique dédiée, mais prend dynamiquement une quantité sur la mémoire principale (jusqu'à 384 MB).
La version de la 4500MHD cadencée à 400 MHz trouvée dans les chipsets GL40 et GS40, est appelée GMA 4500M (sans le HD) et a une plus mauvaise performance dans les jeux 3D et le décodage vidéo. 

Seuls les vieux jeux peuvent tourner de façon fluide sur ces ordinateurs (S'ils ne sont pas trop gourmands en ressources). Les coeurs à mémoire partagée de cette catégorie ont l'avantage d'être moins chaud et moins gourmand en énergie. Pour le bureau, internet, l'édition de photos, et le montage vidéo ces cartes graphiques n'ont aucune restrictions.

Intel Pentium Dual Core: Version à un noyau du duo core et successeur du Pentium M d'Intel ; En raison des 65nm  de réduction, structurer une plus petite consommation de courant égale par rapport au Pentium M (au maximum 27 watts) ; l'exécution est comparable au Pentium M (légèrement plus rapide en raison de quelques améliorations).

Dual core d'entrée de gamme. Avec son appellation Pentium, ce CPU possède moins de fonctions d'économie d'énergie que les Core 2 Duo.
