As a platform, the Tablet PC has never reached the mass market acceptance that Microsoft expected. However, as a business tool it has seen steady and continued growth. So much so that Dell has finally launched its first device into the market with the Latitude XT (£1409 inc. VAT). It's an impressive machine, weighing a mere 1.6kg and is finished in black aluminium, giving it a tactile feel but also a robust quality to the design.

The Latitude XT has the power to get things done and the simple clean lines of the black case make it un obtrusive. Also worth noting is that lack of "gloss" on this machine makes means your not disturbed by unwanted reflections. If you are in a position to order a Dell Latitude XT "Road Warrior Solution" configuration you wont be sorry or disappointed in your investment.

The Latitude XT is a solid tablet with a great display. It is very expensive though. Many users complained about the price and Dell says it is targeted toward the business market not consumers. This may be true, but it still seems a bit pricey for the business market as well. The XT can compete with Toshiba's M700 or even Lenovo's X61. Yes, the N-trig, dual touch technology is a huge plus and taking notes and using your finger are almost flawless, but the price is way above its competitors. The XT comes with a nice array of ports and has plenty of optional accessories. The slice battery gives it all day power and the MediaBase gives you an optical drive and more ports then I could ever use. It seems Dell is already talking about updating the XT by November 2008 as well, so I guess we will see what the XT2 has to offer.

Evidemment, le XT2 XFR n'est pas du tout destiné au marché grand public. Dell l'a vendu aux Etats-Unis à plusieurs unités de police et d'intervention médicale d'urgence, ainsi qu'à l'US Air Force, l'armée de l'air de l'Oncle Sam. En France, le marché est aussi tourné vers les services de l'Etat. Les pompiers de Paris s'en sont procuré quelques exemplaires, tout comme le Samu et d'autres unités plus « discrètes ». Avec un prix débutant à 2 499 euros (notre modèle coûtait même 2 849 euros), c'est une machine blindée à réserver aux professionnels.

The XT2 XFR obviously has a very niche market, but aside from its touch capabilities temporarily ceasing after its spell in the freezer, it appears as rugged as Dell claims it to be. Of course, all that protection comes at a price, but it is in line with the competition, most notably Panasonic’s Toughbook CF-19. It would be nice if it were a bit lighter, especially since it’s designed to be used in the hands, but overall it’s a decent ruggedised tablet-style laptop.

Dell's Latitude line of business-grade laptops may be, officially, engineered for ‘durability, security, battery life and remote administration’, but every so often it throws up something that is simply wasted on PowerPoint presentations. The Latitude XT2 is a good looking and well built business convertible-notebook that seems to lag behind the competition. Compared to its main rival, the Lenovo ThinkPad X200 Tablet, it uses a slower 1.8" hard drive, slower processor, and offers much less battery life unless you also use an add-on battery slice. One of the XT2's biggest flaws is the use of much slower 1.8" 5400RPM hard drives ... making the performance much slower than other top-tier business machines.

Dell's second stab at a convertible Tablet PC is a superb machine which brings finger-tap support to the screen and, perhaps in a more headline-grabbing move, adds multi-touch support for good measure. The machine is pricey though. Its starting price of £1,200 comes into play before you start fiddling with the many customisation options, and before you add VAT on top. The multi-touch capability and great build quality will draw you in but you may be put off by the absence of a built-in optical drive and the amount you need to splash out to get one.

We like the XT2’s smooth multitouch display, durable design, and speedy solid state drive. Overall, we prefer the Lenovo ThinkPad X200 Tablet with multitouch, because it offers faster performance and longer endurance for about $300 less. But if you’re a highly mobile worker looking for a design that’s easier to carry, the XT2 is worth a look. Just be sure to spring for the 6-cell battery.

The Dell Latitude XT2 packs some of the latest touch technologies in an extremely well built and good looking chassis. Build quality is above and beyond even similar Latitude series notebooks, with a very rugged chassis. The keyboard is comfortable to type on and feels almost better than the legendary ThinkPad keyboard. System performance would get a significant boost with a faster drive since the 1.8" model gets an average transfer speed of 28MB/s while most SSDs of the same size would be above 100MB/s. Overall, if you are looking for a very portable tablet designed to hold up to the rigors of daily business use, the Dell Latitude XT2 is a clear winner. The only big downside to this model is the high price tag and lower battery life, but if you can live with those it is hard to find a superior model.

Go on, grab the Dell Latitude XT2 - it just feels good. The rugged metal-alloy casing gives it a solid, substantial frame. Pick it up, and the 13.3in Dell Latitude XT2 is deceptively light (1.64kg). That there's no IPS screen option for Dell's convertible really is a shame, belying the TX3's premium design, build, ergonomics and internals. Dell Inc est une société multinationale de technologie qui développe, fabrique, vend et prend en charge les ordinateurs personnels et autres produits liés. Basée au Texas, Dell emploie plus de 82.700 personnes dans le monde (2009). En 2006, Dell a acheté le fabricant de matériel d'ordinateur Alienware. Dans la plupart des pays, les ordinateurs portables sont vendus directement aux consommateurs par Dell et chaque portable configuré sur mesure est assemblé en fonction d'une sélection d'options. La part de marché en ce qui concerne les ventes d'ordinateurs personnels en 2007 (étude de marché IDC): HP 18,9%, Dell 16,4%, Acer 9,9%, Lenovo 7,5%, Apple 5,7%.

Seuls les vieux jeux peuvent tourner de façon fluide sur ces ordinateurs (S'ils ne sont pas trop gourmands en ressources). Les coeurs à mémoire partagée de cette catégorie ont l'avantage d'être moins chaud et moins gourmand en énergie. Pour le bureau, internet, l'édition de photos, et le montage vidéo ces cartes graphiques n'ont aucune restrictions.

ATI Radeon Xpress 1250:

La plupart des jeux pas trop demandants actuels peuvent tourner de façon fluide. soyez prêts à endurer un rendu graphique assez moche à cause de la basse résolution et des détails au minimum. Par ailleurs ces cartes sont suffisantes pour un travail de bureau et le visionnage de vidéos (pas évident pour la vidéo HD).

Intel Graphics Media Accelerator (GMA) 4500MHD: Carte graphique intégrée (Mémoire partagée) livrée avec le chipset GM45(Montevina). Grâce à deux shaders de plus et une vitesse plus élevée, beaucoup plus rapide que la GMA X3100. Mais toujours pas envisageable pour les joueurs (Les jeux DirectX 10 ne seront pas jouable ou alors à de très faibles résolutions). Le processeur vidéo permet de décoder la HD (AVC/VC-2/MPEG2) , pour la lecture BluRay sur des processeurs plus lents.

Intel Graphics Media Accelerator (GMA) 4500M: L'Intel Graphics Media Accelerator 4500MHD (parfois aussi appelé GMA X4500 HD ou d'autres combinaisons) est un adaptateur graphique compatible DirectX 10 embarqué dans les chipsets GM45, GE45 et GS45 de la plate-forme Centrino 2 (Montevina). La puce n'a pas de mémoire graphique dédiée, mais prend dynamiquement une quantité sur la mémoire principale (jusqu'à 384 MB).
La version de la 4500MHD cadencée à 400 MHz trouvée dans les chipsets GL40 et GS40, est appelée GMA 4500M (sans le HD) et a une plus mauvaise performance dans les jeux 3D et le décodage vidéo. 

Ces cartes devraient être capables de faire tourner tout les jeux d'aujourd'hui, mais la plupart d'entre eux uniquement en détails moyens ou faibles et avec des résolution basses. Les plus vieux jeux ou les jeux moins gourmands restent jouables avec de beaux graphismes.

Intel HD Graphics 3000:

3 GPUs à venir (1er Trimestre 2011) intégrés aux CPU Intel Sandy Bridge (Core ix-2xxx). Les 3000 / 200 correspondent à la puce GT2 avec 12 Execution Units (EUs).

Intel Core 2 Duo:

C'est le successeur du Core Duo avec des pipelines 5-20% plus rapides sans consommation supplémentaire. Comme une addition à la conception du core duo là existe un quatrième décodeur, une SSE-unité amplifiée et une unité logique arithmétique additionnelle (ALU). Le core 2 duo pour ordinateurs portables est identique aux processeurs de core 2 duo d'ordinateur de bureau mais les portables fonctionnent avec des tensions inférieures et une vitesse de Frontside. L'exécution des portables également synchronisés est 20-25% inférieure à des ordinateur de bureau en raison de fréquence d’horloge inférieure de Frontside et plus lents de disques durs.
