In the wake of our winter roundup of retail laptops, we noticed that while there are plenty of good, inexpensive laptops available. For frequent travelers, there are still few options that cost less than $1,000 (Netbooks excluded). The $689 Gateway UC7807u is one such system: a 13-inch wide-screen notebook with a travel weight of roughly 6 pounds and good enough performance to handle everyday productivity tasks and entertainment needs. Also worth checking out is another 13-inch option in the same general price range, HP's Pavilion dv3z.

Not quite thin, not quite light, but still plenty portable, the Gateway UC7807u should satisfy those with modest mobile PC needs without sacrificing good looks.

What keeps the Gateway from membership in the Envy and Adamo club is that it isn't slim -- while the above-mentioned machines tip the scales at just three or at most four pounds each, the UC7807 weighs more like a 14.1- if not 15.4-inch laptop at 5.3 pounds (the AC adapter brings its travel weight just past the six-pound mark). At 9.4 by 12.6 by 1.5 inches, it won't hog your entire briefcase, and it's not too unwieldy to pass the pick-it-up-with-one-hand-while-open test. But it's more of a competitor to mainstream machines like the Dell XPS 1330 -- and even that 13.3-inch portable is more than a pound lighter -- than it is Gateway's answer to the MacBook Air.

But the UC7807 loaded programs and switched among applications snappily enough, and completed productivity-oriented benchmarks such as SysMark 2007 Preview without staggering (score: 93). Its CrystalMark and PCMark05 scores were 65,253 and 4,367, respectively. Windows Vista's own Experience Index rates the Gateway a 3.2 on its 5.9-point scale, with graphics proving the weakest link compared to relatively hearty hard disk, CPU, and memory subscores.

With the UC7807u, Gateway delivers a very powerful, attractive, simple notebook at a palatable price point. It is lightweight yet still provides a clear, bright screen, and ample wire-free processing performance. This machine would make an excellent college computer for the mobile student, or even for the middle-aged guy who studies Rome history while nestled in his bed.

While the Gateway UC7807u is certainly not going to be the lightest ultraportable on the market, the system is one of the most affordable. With a base price tag of $800, the system provides a full set of features that will please most users. The mix of metal and plastic gives it a solid sturdy feel. Performance is decent but the battery life is less than average due to a smaller capacity battery.

Gateway's UC7807u costs only $800? I'm not saying that this borderline ultraportable has the speediest parts--or that it's a featherweight (it's far from either). But the slick styling of this beaut certainly tricks you into thinking it is worth more. Software-wise, it comes bearing a relatively light load of bloatware (though you'll waste time uninstalling the demo versions of Microsoft Office). More important, though, is that this machine holds up well. The only real complaint I can level at the UC7807u is that I'd love to see a model sporting a discrete GPU in a lighter frame. If it wasn't so bulky, I'd probably chuck out my netbook and roll with this relatively affordable bad boy when I need to hit the road.

Gateway has been working hard to align its business model with that of Acer, its parent company, by making the majority of its laptops affordable for the masses. If you stroll into any Best Buy or PC retailer, you'd be hard pressed to find a Gateway-branded laptop for over $1,000. The UC7807u ($800 street), a mainstream laptop, is priced accordingly, and Gateway paid close attention to its design: The barreled hinge, the brushed aluminum interior, and the lacquered top are all noteworthy. But along with the aesthetics, Gateway also piles on the weight: The UC7807u is one the heaviest 13-inch laptops on the market. The Gateway UC7807u's bargain-basement price and desirable design can make customers, especially online shoppers, look past its overfed frame.

If style, portability, and a low price are all priorities, you can’t do much better than the Gateway UC7807u. Assuming you can live with its relatively short battery life and a little bit of extra weight compared with the 13-inch competition, this notebook is a very good choice.

We like Gateway more and more every year, and if the company continues to turn out systems like the UC7807u, it could be our favorite vendor in no time flat. It’s not that this laptop is so fast or even so portable, but that it’s the only 13.3-inch system we’ve reviewed that tops out at $799 but looks like it should cost a lot more. It’s a little heavy for our tastes and it doesn’t blow any speed records, but it does keep up with the competition while offering an HDMI port, a slot-loading DVD burner, and a striking design. The most affordable 13.3-inch system available anywhere, the Gateway UC7807u offers unparalleled style and features for the price.

Intel Graphics Media Accelerator (GMA) 4500MHD: Carte graphique intégrée (Mémoire partagée) livrée avec le chipset GM45(Montevina). Grâce à deux shaders de plus et une vitesse plus élevée, beaucoup plus rapide que la GMA X3100. Mais toujours pas envisageable pour les joueurs (Les jeux DirectX 10 ne seront pas jouable ou alors à de très faibles résolutions). Le processeur vidéo permet de décoder la HD (AVC/VC-2/MPEG2) , pour la lecture BluRay sur des processeurs plus lents.

La plupart des jeux pas trop demandants actuels peuvent tourner de façon fluide. soyez prêts à endurer un rendu graphique assez moche à cause de la basse résolution et des détails au minimum. Par ailleurs ces cartes sont suffisantes pour un travail de bureau et le visionnage de vidéos (pas évident pour la vidéo HD).

Intel Core 2 Duo:

C'est le successeur du Core Duo avec des pipelines 5-20% plus rapides sans consommation supplémentaire. Comme une addition à la conception du core duo là existe un quatrième décodeur, une SSE-unité amplifiée et une unité logique arithmétique additionnelle (ALU). Le core 2 duo pour ordinateurs portables est identique aux processeurs de core 2 duo d'ordinateur de bureau mais les portables fonctionnent avec des tensions inférieures et une vitesse de Frontside. L'exécution des portables également synchronisés est 20-25% inférieure à des ordinateur de bureau en raison de fréquence d’horloge inférieure de Frontside et plus lents de disques durs.

L'avantage est que le subnotebook peut être  de petite dimension et peut être porté facilement. de plus Un petit écran a un avantage, il a besoin de peu de courant, ce qui améliore le temps d'exécution de batterie et en conséquence la mobilité. L'inconvénient est que la lecture des textes est épuisante pour les yeux. Les hautes résolutions sont a proscrire.
