EN→FRIt looks like the MacBook Pro, but performance doesn't quite match its rival. When HP refreshed its Envy range earlier this year, we were struck its design. The generous might suggest HP has borrowed a leaf from Apple's design book, the cynical might not be so kind, with the resemblance between this notebook and the MacBook Pro pretty obvious.

EN→FRThe HP Envy 15 is a classy notebook that has a lot going for it. It is a multimedia powerhouse that’s great for running all sorts of applications, watching movies, surfing and even playing games. Plus, its stereo speakers are pretty good as it delivers crisp, clear tunes. However, the Envy isn’t very portable and the battery life suffers due to its demanding processor and graphics chip. But the biggest issue with the notebook is the amount of heat it generates.

EN→FRThere is potential for high performance in this laptop with its interesting processor, but there's also enough niggles to make us cautious before making a recommendation. Given the high power demands of the CPU, this is still more of a desktop replacement, a static desk design which makes the separate optical drive an satisfactory solution over a regular integrated unit. And professional users may be turned off by the glossiness of the screen, its low resolution, or both.

EN→FRThe Envy laptops represent HP's latest premium range, and the Envy 15 is an extremely stylish laptop that successfully marries excellent performance with usability and portability. Nevertheless, this is a small blemish and the HP Envy 15 impressed us enormously with its style, performance and portability – the price is also competitive.

EN→FRWith the arrival of its new high-end range of laptops, one manufacturer would have us believe that imitation truly is the most sincere form of flattery. Lightweight, slender and sheathed in aluminium – no, we’re not talking about Apple’s metal-framed MacBooks - HP’s Envy range comes dressed to impress. HP's Envy 15 takes on Apple at its own game, but proves sinful in all the wrong ways

EN→FRThe HP Envy 15 has some real strengths: the design is sensational, the keyboard is excellent and the power on offer makes this a really versatile machine. This has to be balanced against the lack of internal drive and poor battery life, which means that this is a PC that will complement your plush office or home better than it will accompany you on your travels. There is no doubting the style on offer however and it will look good wherever you put it and whatever competitor you sit it next to.

EN→FRWhile it offers a brilliant screen, awesome performance, and a unique design, the Envy 15’s short battery life (with the standard battery), hot temperatures, and awkward keyboard will turn many buyers off. If you’re a graphics designer or video editor, the Envy 15 is more powerful than a 15-inch MacBook Pro, but you’ll probably prefer the Apple machine’s longer endurance and more comfortable keyboard and touchpad. And if you want to play games, the ASUS G51J, which is $300 less expensive, will be more to your liking. Overall, the Envy 15 has the guts to be a MacBook killer, but we’d like to see HP provide longer battery life—without adding 2 pounds of weight—and cooler temperatures.

EN→FRIt might be more accurate to refer to HP’s latest laptop as the ‘Apple Envy’, as the design of the machine so closely mimics that of Apple’s MacBook Pro range. But, to be fair to HP, it hasn’t simply copied Apple. Yes, the battery life is disappointing, but the Envy 15’s powerhouse performance and competitive price make this an impressive desktop replacement system.

EN→FRAs I worked my way down the list of parts, everything about the HP Envy 15 ($1,800 direct) seemed as if it were a dream come true. An Intel Mobile Core i7 processor, 6GB of DDR3 memory, and midrange ATI graphics card are parts that you would find in an extremely large media center or gaming rig—not in a 15.6-inch aluminum frame that bears a strong resemblance to the Apple MacBook Pro 15-inch (SD Slot). Every component that powers the Envy 15 is what performance dreams are made of, but heat, unfortunately, is an aggravating side effect.

EN→FRThe HP Envy line's name is wonderfully cheeky. While the intention is to imply that others will "envy" people who own these stylish, high-end laptops, the line's similarity in design to Apple's MacBook series makes for an amusing double meaning. Stylish enough to take on Apple's MacBook, the Envy 15 backs up its good looks with excellent performance, superb audio, and great ergonomics. If you don't need an all-day battery, this is a dream machine.

When HP goes after Apple's MacBook Pro, the result is a very handsome notebook that exudes quality, even if it lacks originality. EN→FRWe can't help but be smitten with the HP Envy 15. It's a gaming powerhouse, a desktop replacement and more than powerful enough to keep us away from shopping notebooks for a few years. Yet it's gorgeous, very thin and light. Its unique looks and Apple-chic design make this one of the few gaming notebooks that you can take to a meeting without looking like boy-gamer redux. The machine's portability is somewhat compromised by the large power brick and is seriously compromised if you do indeed need an optical drive on the road and lots of battery power.

EN→FRA big brother to HP's 13-inch Envy 13, this upscale 15-inch model crams more computing power into a midsize laptop than anyone outside of Alienware's m15x. And while that system is a 10-pound monster, the Envy 15 manages to be both slim and reasonably lightweight, partially by ditching the internal optical drive--an unusual move for a larger laptop. HP's new Envy 15 packs high-powered components into a svelte 15-inch body. The result is an upscale status symbol that still shows a few first-generation rough edges.

EN→FRTaiwanese ODMs and lower-tier manufacturers have long tried to ape Apple's design ethic in the hope of generating some publicity. Larger entities, such as HP, have been known to take some inspiration as well, but they generally shy away from more overt imitation for fear of being made to look a little silly. With its Envy range, however, HP has been more brazen.
There's no denying the impulsive appeal of the Envy 15: it's an innovative, attractive and incredibly powerful machine. Unfortunately, though, it seems like a work in progress. Hopefully HP will nail the formula if and when it revisits the concept.

EN→FRUltimately when you put everything together, the HP Envy 15 is actually a pretty good multimedia machine. It does what you need it to do, and does it well without any issues. For those focused on superficial aspects, it would seem to be emulating an Apple MacBook Pro, but as we've mentioned in the review, its color combination and other design elements do give it a slightly unique footprint.

EN→FRWith good looks and a solid configuration, the HP Envy 15 is a laptop that's worth considering. It's not overly expensive considering it's a premium model, but it's also not as refined as a premium model should be. EN→FROkay, time to get it out of your system. Say it with us: the Envy 15 unapologetically copies the MacBook Pro. Feel good, getting that off your chest? Excellent. Onto the business of evaluating the laptop for what it does. In some ways, the 15 improves on the notebook it so unsubtly imitates: it has a sharper (though imprecisely calibrated) display with wide viewing angles.

EN→FRThe new HP Envy 15 is a fairly slick all-purpose laptop, if a little on the bulky side. It has lots of great wireless and wired connectivity options, fantastic audio, a very useful analog volume dial, and a good keyboard. HP has two major issues to work out before I can recommend it, though. The first is the color-calibration problem on the otherwise very desirable display upgrade option, and the other is the terrible palm detection and stiff clicking on the touchpad. If the company can address those two sticking points, it will be easy to give the Envy 15 a thumbs-up.

We like the dual HDMI and DisplayPort with the ability to drive multiple monitors, strong dedicated graphics, backlit keyboard and a full HD 1080p IPS display. Though I purchased the Envy for review purposes, I've decided to keep it as my main Windows machine. It's a fast and capable gamer and Photoshop machine that can run for 5 hours on AC power-- sweet. EN→FRIs the ENVY 15 as good as the 15-inch MacBook Pro? No. But considering that for the hardware that we tested you’d have to spend nearly $2000 on an Apple machine, it doesn’t have to be. If you find yourself spending most of your computer time within the reach of an AC outlet, it’s tough to beat for power and media capabilities. I wish it was a little lighter and lasted a little longer, but as a desktop replacement and media consumption/creation specialist, you’d be hard-pressed to find anything with these kinds of specs, fit and finish in this price range.
