There's no denying that the Portégé M700 is well specified and that Toshiba has priced it competitively for a fully featured Tablet device. However, it's bigger and heavier then most 12.1in notebooks, and it lacks the solid build quality of the business behemoth that is the Lenovo ThinkPad. The keyboard is particularly disappointing, but if you're planning to use it mostly in Tablet mode, that probably won't bother you. There's not much that's intrinsically wrong with the M700, but there's nothing that stands out as particularly good either. This latest Portégé definitely hasn't convinced me of the merits of Tablet computing, but to be fair to Toshiba, I doubt that anything could.

Although 2kg isn’t heavy for a laptop when carried in a shoulder bag, actually holding it in your hands is a different matter and, after 15 minutes or so, you’ll most likely be struggling. Combine this with the premium you’re paying for the tablet design and alternatives such as ultraportable laptops or UMPCs start to look more attractive.

With the Portégé M800-106, Toshiba delivers a 13.3in notebook that's attractive enough, eminently portable and stuffed with features. It also continues Toshiba's reputation for excellent notebook speakers. However, it's let down by an average screen and incredibly poor battery life, meaning that if you want to use it on the move you'll have to spend close to £100 more to get the desired performance. This, ultimately, makes the M800 disappointing value for money despite its other potential strengths, so Toshiba should be kicking itself for its penny-pinching since it makes an otherwise good notebook rather ordinary.

White and bright Toshiba

Overall, the Toshiba M800 is a winner in terms of looks and design. The white and glossy finish is just too attractive to dismiss and while I was out and about over the weekend, I spotted a pastel pink M800 and thought that was equally riveting — in a girly way. White, however, is the new pink and is neutral and non-gender specific. That said, the M800 is great for those in need of a stylish notebook that exudes an air of professionalism.

But despite lacking the exclusivity that it once brought, the finish looks stylish on Toshiba's latest laptop. A nod to Apple's iconic design from Toshiba, but perhaps the original is best.

While the performance of the Toshiba Portege M800 wasn't anything mind blowing, it makes up for this by delivering a smooth multimedia experience that should please the senses. The built-in FM radio reception worked surprisingly well and before you dismiss it as a gimmicky snag, at least the tuner does provide some entertainment on the go without stressing the battery excessively. Audio playback was also adequate, and was capable of clear and crisp audio results. Just don't except any hard-hitting bass from the tiny speakers. The M800 does have its fair share of concerns, though these are mostly minor that can be easily overlooked. For example, the screen was glassy, vibrant and clear dead-on, but suffered from mild color shifts and a washout when our eyes strayed off the vertical axis slightly. If you think about it positively though, that means you're ensured some privacy when viewing your screen. So like we mentioned earlier, there's nothing really glaring to be concerned on the M800. Retailing at a cool S$2299, the Toshiba Portege M800 will not burn that big a hole in your pocket unlike some of the other 13.3-inch ultraportable notebooks, so why not test-drive the M800 if you're looking for a stylish rig that delivers a pretty decent overall experience?

The Toshiba Portege M750 is for those who want regular notebook power and design plus a tablet screen. It fits equally well in vertical markets such as medical, insurance, etc. and on the college or work campus. The notebook is powerful enough for most productivity applications, multimedia tasks and some gaming. It has plenty of ports, and built-in Wi-Fi and Bluetooth make sure you are connected wirelessly. The optical drive also sets it apart from the ultra-thin tablet notebooks and the display is very good by tablet PC standards.

There's plenty to like about the Portégé M750-10K: it's well-built, great to scribble notes on and has a reasonably fast processor. Still alive yet often ridiculed, tablet PCs haven't exactly had the easiest of times since their conception at the turn of the century. HP is attempting to breathe new life into the tablet by aiming its new TouchSmart TX2 at home users, but Toshiba's Portégé M750 takes a more traditional business-oriented approach. At £1206 inc VAT, the Portégé M750-10K doesn't come cheap, and at this price we were hoping for a better chassis. If you want to save a bit of cash, the M750-10J variation costs the least at £976, but with an Intel T5870 processor and just 1GB Ram, it's not something we're be tempted by.

Tablet PCs are an acquired taste, and the Toshiba Portégé M750-S7202 has all the benefits users will appreciate in a tablet, as well as the inherent drawbacks to the genre—namely a bulky chassis and premium $1,799 price. If you really do use it as both a tablet and a traditional laptop, however, those negatives become easy to overlook. Done up in a dark-gray ("metallic flake titanium") color, the M750 looks both attractive and inoffensive. Measuring an inch and a half thick and weighing 4.6 pounds (without an optical drive in the modular bay), the M750 is similar in size and weight to other convertible tablets we've recently reviewed (such as the HP TouchSmart tx2z), but it's bulky compared with most 12.1-inch laptops. This convertible tablet features a multimodal touch screen that responds to both finger and stylus input. We just wish it weren’t so bulky.

Toshiba:

 Toshiba Corporation est une compagnie conglomérat multinational de construction, dont le siège social est au Japon. La principale activité de la société est dans le secteur des infrastructures, des produits de consommation, et des appareils électroniques et composants. Les Semi-conducteurs Toshiba sont dans le Top 20 des ventes mondiales de semi-conducteurs. Toshiba est l'un des plus grands constructeurs internationaux de portables. Il existe de nombreuses revues pour les modèles de Toshiba.

Toshiba critiques

Seuls les vieux jeux peuvent tourner de façon fluide sur ces ordinateurs (S'ils ne sont pas trop gourmands en ressources). Les coeurs à mémoire partagée de cette catégorie ont l'avantage d'être moins chaud et moins gourmand en énergie. Pour le bureau, internet, l'édition de photos, et le montage vidéo ces cartes graphiques n'ont aucune restrictions.

Intel Graphics Media Accelerator (GMA) X3100: L’Intel Graphics Media Accelerator (GMA) X3100 est une carte graphique intégrée sur un chipset Mobile Intel 965GM (pour Merom = architecture Core 2). C’est un successeur de la GMA 950. Les plus intéressant c’est l’ajout d’un pipeline programmable. Grâce à l’introduction des caractéristiques DirectX9, HDR et Transform & Lighning (T&L) matériel, son prédécesseur n’avait que du T&L en logiciel – devrai être prêt pour Windows Vista Premium (supporte Aero Glass complètement). Selon nos informations elle devra être bien meilleure que la GMA 950.

La plupart des jeux pas trop demandants actuels peuvent tourner de façon fluide. soyez prêts à endurer un rendu graphique assez moche à cause de la basse résolution et des détails au minimum. Par ailleurs ces cartes sont suffisantes pour un travail de bureau et le visionnage de vidéos (pas évident pour la vidéo HD).

Intel Graphics Media Accelerator (GMA) 4500MHD: Carte graphique intégrée (Mémoire partagée) livrée avec le chipset GM45(Montevina). Grâce à deux shaders de plus et une vitesse plus élevée, beaucoup plus rapide que la GMA X3100. Mais toujours pas envisageable pour les joueurs (Les jeux DirectX 10 ne seront pas jouable ou alors à de très faibles résolutions). Le processeur vidéo permet de décoder la HD (AVC/VC-2/MPEG2) , pour la lecture BluRay sur des processeurs plus lents.

Intel Core 2 Duo:

C'est le successeur du Core Duo avec des pipelines 5-20% plus rapides sans consommation supplémentaire. Comme une addition à la conception du core duo là existe un quatrième décodeur, une SSE-unité amplifiée et une unité logique arithmétique additionnelle (ALU). Le core 2 duo pour ordinateurs portables est identique aux processeurs de core 2 duo d'ordinateur de bureau mais les portables fonctionnent avec des tensions inférieures et une vitesse de Frontside. L'exécution des portables également synchronisés est 20-25% inférieure à des ordinateur de bureau en raison de fréquence d’horloge inférieure de Frontside et plus lents de disques durs.

T7500: Le Core 2 Duo T7500 est de la génération Merom Core 2 Duo avec 4Mo de cache de nvieau 2. C'est un CPU de milieu de gamme (en 2009) donc à égalité avec le P7550 ou le Turion II Ultra M640/M660.

T5750:

Merom Core 2 Duo bas de gamme sans Virtualization avec une température maximum très basse.

P8400: Dual core de milieu de gamme avec un TDP de 25 Watt. Pour les gamers ce ne sera pas suffisant.

P8600: Un dual core puissant et pas cher. Suffisant pour la plupart des applications avec un TDP de 25W TDP donc compatible avec les portables les plus mobiles.
