The Toshiba Satellite U840W is available in two variants—U840W-X0310 and X0110. Both the variants feature identical configuration. The only difference is that the X0310 ships with Windows 7 Home Premium and the X0110 ships with Windows 8. The U840W-X0310 is priced at Rs 63,500 and the X0110 ships at Rs 1,000 more. This could be because of the higher cost of the Windows 8 OS. Considering you can buy a high-end laptop with a quad-core Core i7 processor and discrete graphics for less than Rs 60,000, we find the U840W overpriced. For this price we feel that the Ultrabook would have been a compelling deal if it offered features like discrete graphics, IPS display and touchscreen.

It’s a tough choice, and therefore the decision on whether to buy the Toshiba Satellite U840W will depend purely on the type of media you consume. If you’re looking to watch a lot of movie on the go, then the 21:9 ultra-widescreen of the U840W makes perfect sense. However, if most of your media consumption is based around TV shows, then perhaps a regular 16:9 sized ultrabook is what you need, of which Toshiba has a lot of varieties to choose from.

Toshiba has taken a brave step in being the first to introduce a ‘cinematic’, ultra widescreen laptop into the market. The Satellite U840W is an all-round goody bag combining generally premium build and materials with a usable backlit keyboard and the best speakers we’ve yet heard on an Ultrabook along with good battery life. Its 14.4in 21:9 display is also reasonably impressive and great for split-screen multi-tasking, though being TN rather than IPS/VA it still suffers from poor viewing angles and its glossy finish can be annoying. However, throw in the U840W’s current £600 price, and there’s little that can touch this Ultrabook.

The Toshiba U840W is an odd ultrabook. It’s powerful but not practical, looks rugged but isn’t and is designed for movies but can be beaten by many tablets for screen performance. We’re confused about who the target market is for the U840W, especially as it didn’t fit in any of our existing laptop bags and arrives without an Asus-style sleeve. For movie fans, there’s a variety of £600 ultrabooks which still leave change from the U840W price tag for a tablet with a better screen.

Toshiba’s U840W does a superb job of playing high-definition movies as they were intended to be watched, and thanks to its generously wide screen it’s like having a cinema in your rucksack. The sound quality is admirable, too. We feel a little let down in the slightly-shoddy keyboard and touchpad departments, and it seems these have been neglected in order to focus on the cinematic experience. But what a great experience that is.

If anything, the U845W serves as a warning: even if a new device looks crazy and cool, for instance, this laptop with two touchscreens on the lid, or this “unbelievably great” tablet designed by a software giant, or this tablet/laptop hybrid with a sliding mechanism reminiscent of dumbphones, it still might be a ultimately failed experiment. The U845W, with its superfluous widescreen, certainly fits in that category, and while it was fun to think about and use for a few days–”hey, this is what it would be like if laptops had a cinema screen”–I wouldn’t want to use it for more than a week. Simply put, no matter what your use case, there’s a laptop out there that’s a better fit for you. It probably has a 16×9 screen.

I've come away from my time with the Toshiba Satellite U845W with a largely favorable impression. What Toshiba has achieved here is very respectable and worthy of attention: they've designed a notebook that's pleasing to look at and by and large excellent for productivity. In terms of build and design, I found the U845W to feel pretty durable. The materials used are solid and the whole thing feels well crafted.

I’m not convinced that a laptop with a 21:9 aspect ratio display makes sense if you view it as a computer built for watching videos. There just aren’t that many videos available with that aspect ratio — especially since the Toshiba Satellite U845W doesn’t include a Blu-ray drive (or any optical disc drive). Most of the videos you’re likely to watch on this computer are online videos or movies you’ve downloaded from the internet.

We like to give PC makers credit for trying something out of the ordinary, and the Satellite U845W-S410 is anything but ordinary. If the Toshiba Satellite U845W-S410 were to be judged purely upon its performance and feature set, it would fare rather well, offering solid processing power and a healthy selection of ports and storage space. Unfortunately, the headlining feature of the laptop—the movie-friendly widescreen display—mars the overall user experience and distorts the dimensions of the laptop. For a superlative movie watching experience, the Editors' Choice Asus Zenbook Prime UX32VD-DB71 offers a 1080p display and excellent speakers, while the similarly-equipped Lenovo IdeaPad U310 and HP Envy 4-1043cl are both less cumbersome and less expensive.

Although it's a relatively decent performer, the Toshiba Satellite U845W-S430 falls short of rarefied ultrabook greatness by hinging almost entirely on a wider display whose utility is of questionable value at best. Beyond the Windows 8 Home screen, some apps, and the incredibly narrow realm of Cinemascope movies, the wider display serves little purpose, especially since it lacks touch capability. While those looking for a Windows 8-ready system with a touch screen should check out the more versatile Lenovo IdeaPad Yoga 13. The Asus Zenbook Prime UX32VD-DB71 is still the ultrabook to beat, thanks to its potent combination of looks and performance.

Windows 8 seems destined to be appreciated the most on computers with touch screens. It's not that you can't have a perfectly decent Windows 8 experience on a standard PC, but you're missing out on a good deal of the design it was intended for. Toshiba's experimental extra-wide-screen ultrabook gets a Windows 8 software upgrade, but it turns the Toshiba Satellite U845W into a computer imperfectly matched for what Windows 8 has to offer.

Toshiba:

Toshiba Corporation est un conglomérat ou groupe technologique japonais. La société a été créée en 1939 et en 1978, Toshiba est devenue le nom officiel de la société. Les produits et services de l'entreprise comprennent des systèmes d'infrastructure électrique, industrielle et sociale, des ascenseurs et des escaliers mécaniques, des composants électroniques, des semi-conducteurs, des disques durs, des imprimantes, des batteries, l'éclairage, la logistique et les technologies de l'information. Toshiba était l'un des plus grands fabricants d'ordinateurs personnels, d'électronique grand public, d'appareils électroménagers et d'équipements médicaux.

La plupart des jeux pas trop demandants actuels peuvent tourner de façon fluide. soyez prêts à endurer un rendu graphique assez moche à cause de la basse résolution et des détails au minimum. Par ailleurs ces cartes sont suffisantes pour un travail de bureau et le visionnage de vidéos (pas évident pour la vidéo HD).

Intel HD Graphics 4000:

Carte graphique intégrée aux processeurs de la génération Ivy Bridge. Possède des fréquences différentes selon les processeurs (du ULV au quad core de bureau) et donc des performances différentes.

Processeur Ivy Bridge Dual Core ULV du second trimestre. Il possède une fréquence de 1.7 - 2.6 GHz et un GPU HD 4000 intégré (350 - 1050 MHz). Le TDP est noté à 17 W.
