Business professionals will agree that having ample screen real estate is vital to their productivity, but those who frequently take their laptops on the road often settle for smaller screens because portability is critical. To its credit, the Toshiba Tecra R10-S4401 ($1,549 direct) is one of the few lightweights that can pull off a 14-inch widescreen on a 4.2-pound frame and still give you features like a built-in optical drive and speedy parts. Unfortunately, it missed the mark in other areas, such as battery life. The Tecra R10-S4401 is one of the lightest laptops to house a 14-inch widescreen, but Toshiba had to sacrifice battery life to get there.

The Toshiba Tecra R10 is the best looking, best performing Tecra notebook we've seen in years. The Tecra line of notebooks often lacked the polish of the rest of Toshiba's laptops, but thanks to some design elements from the Toshiba Portege line, the new Tecra notebooks look as good as they perform. Still, the attractive R10 is not without its flaws. Designers seemingly had some trouble figuring out where to put things in this notebook since the ExpressCard slot, fingerprint reader, and quick launch keys all should have been located elsewhere. The touchpad buttons work great, but the shallow press of the buttons makes them somewhat painful to use over the course of a full work day. Still, the main issue that may keep some people from buying the Tecra R10 is the price. While the price of the R10 isn't completely out of line, similar configurations from other companies cost several hundred dollars less. Bottom line, the Toshiba Tecra R10 is a great business notebook for road warriors who want a full featured notebook with sleek looks ... but it would be even better if it was a few hundred dollars less expensive.

Priced at $1,549, the Toshiba Tecra R10-S4401 is one of the better business notebooks we’ve tested, and although we prefer the design and display of the Samsung X460-44P, the Toshiba costs $150 less. Business users who want to travel light without sacrificing performance or battery life will find the R10-S4401 a compelling option.

Toshiba describes the 14-inch, sub-2kg Tecra R10 series as having a 'sleek design, extensive features and lightweight portability'. There are three models available, our review sample being the entry-level £1,030 R10-112. The mid-range R10-11B with a faster CPU and bigger hard disk costs £1,210, while the top-end R10-114 (with a solid-state drive and integrated mobile broadband) costs around £1,720. The Toshiba Tecra R10-112 is attractive and offers decent performance, although it's not brilliantly equipped to handle graphically demanding tasks. The keyboard flexes too much for our liking and the battery life is average, but the screen is very good quality. Overall, it's a good laptop

The race to secure the corporate dollar is reflected in the number and quality of business notebooks that have appeared over the past several months: the A-Listed Sony VAIO VGN-SR19XN has been joined by the Lenovo ThinkPad T500 and, more recently, the Dell Latitude E6400. Toshiba's latest, the Tecra R10-112, has a list of credentials that immediately places it in this esteemed company: Windows Vista Business, Toshiba's EasyGuard security software, draft-n wireless and a generous three-year warranty. There are also dozens of proprietary utilities - including password management, data backup and shock protection tools - that should, in theory, make the Tecra both easier to use and more secure. Plenty of business features and reasonable power, but the Tecra is let down by poor design.

At a price tickling the $1500 mark, the Tecra R10 is a bit more spendy than a close competitor like the Lenovo ThinkPad T400. It packs business class looks and comes loaded with almost everything you might need. While it may not be a lean and mean 12 or 13.3 inch form factor, the R10 is a very competitive with its 4.3 lb, 14.1 inch frame. Is it a bit more expensive than others hitting the mark? Yes - but I feel it's a very good contendor to the Sony's and Macbooks out there to carry a good brand following from Toshiba. It plays fairly well on the road, has business casual looks, and performs like an rockstar at the superbowl halftime show. I'm not sold on the harddrive space, and it could do justice for a slightly better resolution to match it's dedicated GPU. I suppose just make sure to keep a spare battery or power outlet nearby and I'd be safe to guess you'll stay productive - and if you planned on purchasing this unit for playing DVD's...you better tell your boss that before complaining to me about it.

Toshiba's Tecra R10 is a mainstream business laptop offering a comprehensive set of features plus a decent sized display, all while keeping the weight down to a reasonable level. Toshiba's Tecra R10 is a solid business laptop with plenty of performance and all the features a mobile user might need. While the high-end model covered here has 4GB RAM and a Flash hard disk, this specification is a steep price hike over the £899 of the entry-level model. Battery life is also short for working away from mains power for any time.

Toshiba's Tecra R10 series of laptops comprises several variants. All are small format devices designed for portability. Prices range from £899 (plus VAT) right up to £1,549 (plus VAT), depending on the specifications you choose. At the higher price you get the fastest processor choices and a 128MB solid state hard drive (SSD), while physical hard drive options run to 160GB and 200GB. The Tecra R10 is a serviceable enough notebook, but it lacks the panache that some of its competitors offer. If you are desperate for solid state storage and built-in mobile broadband, it will cost a pretty penny.

 Toshiba Corporation est une compagnie conglomérat multinational de construction, dont le siège social est au Japon. La principale activité de la société est dans le secteur des infrastructures, des produits de consommation, et des appareils électroniques et composants. Les Semi-conducteurs Toshiba sont dans le Top 20 des ventes mondiales de semi-conducteurs. Toshiba est l'un des plus grands constructeurs internationaux de portables. Il existe de nombreuses revues pour les modèles de Toshiba.

Toshiba critiques

La plupart des jeux pas trop demandants actuels peuvent tourner de façon fluide. soyez prêts à endurer un rendu graphique assez moche à cause de la basse résolution et des détails au minimum. Par ailleurs ces cartes sont suffisantes pour un travail de bureau et le visionnage de vidéos (pas évident pour la vidéo HD).

NVIDIA Quadro NVS 150M: Basé sur la GeForce 9200M GS, mais optimisée pour une utilisation professionnelle stable (pilotes et bios particuliers). Supporte PureVideo HD pour aider le processeur à décoder des vidéos HD. Vitesse de la mémoire: 400 MHz GDDR2, 700 MHz GDDR3.

Intel Graphics Media Accelerator (GMA) 4500MHD: Carte graphique intégrée (Mémoire partagée) livrée avec le chipset GM45(Montevina). Grâce à deux shaders de plus et une vitesse plus élevée, beaucoup plus rapide que la GMA X3100. Mais toujours pas envisageable pour les joueurs (Les jeux DirectX 10 ne seront pas jouable ou alors à de très faibles résolutions). Le processeur vidéo permet de décoder la HD (AVC/VC-2/MPEG2) , pour la lecture BluRay sur des processeurs plus lents.

Intel Core 2 Duo:

C'est le successeur du Core Duo avec des pipelines 5-20% plus rapides sans consommation supplémentaire. Comme une addition à la conception du core duo là existe un quatrième décodeur, une SSE-unité amplifiée et une unité logique arithmétique additionnelle (ALU). Le core 2 duo pour ordinateurs portables est identique aux processeurs de core 2 duo d'ordinateur de bureau mais les portables fonctionnent avec des tensions inférieures et une vitesse de Frontside. L'exécution des portables également synchronisés est 20-25% inférieure à des ordinateur de bureau en raison de fréquence d’horloge inférieure de Frontside et plus lents de disques durs.

SP9300: Core 2 Duo économique avec 6 Mo de cache de niveau 2 avec toutes les caractéristiques Penryn (comme VT-x).

SP9400: Le Intel Core 2 Duo SP9400 est un processeur pour portables avec 6Mo de cache de niveau 2 cadencé à 2.4 GHz avec un TDP de 25 Watt.
