70% Need a cheap Windows laptop? The Acer Aspire 3 15 makes a few sacrifices to hit its tempting sub-$500 price

While I’m not the biggest fan of the Acer Aspire 3 15, I cannot deny that it's pretty solid for a laptop this cheap. It looks nice and features a relatively clicky keyboard. However, I cannot get over its poor battery life. The lower performance does suck, but battery life? I can name a bunch of budget laptops with great battery life, and I have! If battery life is important to you, and I assume it is, then I highly recommend either saving some money or waiting for a sale on the Acer Aspire 14 AI. That offers over double the battery life of the Aspire 3 15, as well as double the performance. If you really want a 15-inch laptop for dirt cheap, and plan on staying plugged in all day, then the Aspire 3 might be for you.

The 2023 Acer Aspire 3 is one of the most affordable 15.6” laptops on the market. It runs Windows 11 on the AMD Ryzen 3 7320U processor with integrated AMD Radeon graphics. It has a full HD IPS display, WiFi 6, a good selection of ports including HDMI 2.1 and USB-C and it boasts long battery life.

The Acer Aspire 3 (A315-24P) is nothing special. It’s a lower-power machine that can get simple work done and not much else. I wouldn’t recommend it for entertainment or anything beyond basic web browsing and light, office tasks. But it handles those latter tasks with surprisingly little difficulty, and it runs for ages on its battery, thanks to its low-power processor. If you can get it for $379, it’s a decent value. However, when you're already spending $400, it makes sense to jump up to $500 by either saving or financing. While the $499 model is more readily available, and though it might be more powerful, it doesn't compare with what's offered by recommended competitors in the budget space, like the Lenovo IdeaPad 3i 15 (2022) or the Lenovo IdeaPad Windows Duet 5i.

Okay, let’s try to annalize what we just learned. For starters, the Ryzen 3 7320U is a really potent processor. Its Radeon 610M might look bad on paper, and when it comes to synthetic benchmarks, but playing light titles like CS:GO or DOTA2 is actually possible at medium settings and 1080p resolution.But hey, you are probably getting this laptop for a daily driver, since it is a pretty affordable offering. Then, you will be happy to learn that its battery lasts more than 12 hours of Web browsing or nearly 14 hours of video playback. The cooling is also on point, while the display of the device is just what you want! Acer Aspire 3 (A315-24P)’s IPS panel has a Full HD resolution, comfortable viewing angles, a good contrast ratio, and a non-flickering backlight. It does cover only 51% of the sRGB color gamut, which is a disadvantage.Unfortunately, the M.2 PCIe x4 slot is limited to Gen 3 speeds. However, it still supports Gen 4 SSDs, which is nice. Another interesting aspect of this notebook is the lack of memory expansion. It clearly has the space inside, but it is limited to 8GB of LPDDR5 RAM, working at 5500MHz. Let’s hope that Google Chrome doesn’t get any thirstier in the future. To be completely frank, the keyboard is not super comfortable for typing. That’s due to its short key travel, making it harder to distinguish the otherwise clicky feedback. Acer is trying to compensate with a NumberPad and a large touchpad – not a bad strategy. At the end of the day, you shouldn’t expect a very good build quality. But what is more important is that the Acer Aspire 3 (A315-24P) definitely meets the expectations set by its price tag.
