The Apple MacBook Pro have two very strong things going for it. First, it is the smallest and lightest 17-inch notebook available on the market making it great for people who want a large screen but not have the bulk associated with a desktop replacement. Second, the Mac OS X Leopard operating system let's it also use the Windows operatings system via the official Boot Camp release. This is great for designers needed to work or test in both environments. The downside is that it is a relatively expensive machine for the hardware.

The Apple MacBook Pro is an impressive machine but, as the name implies, it's not aimed at the regular home consumer. Those able to afford it, or write it off as a business expense, will find it's a great machine, if a little limited compared to many of its rivals.

80% Apple MacBook Pro 17-inch (Core 2 Duo T7700)
Source: PC Mag Anglais EN→FR Archive.org version
The Apple MacBook Pro 17-inch (Core 2 Duo T7700; $3,799 direct) is the only 17-inch laptop that can be labeled as both a thin-and-light laptop and a desktop replacement. It's thin-and-light in that it weighs a mere 6.7 pounds, yet with its drool-inducing 17-inch widescreen, it can kick your current desktop to the curb. But this shouldn't be news to anyone. This form factor has been Apple's formula for success since the first MacBook Pro 17-inch debuted in 2003. The latest revision involves gutting the inside of the laptop to make room for Intel's Centrino Duo platform. And for video perfectionists, you can now get the 17-inch MacBook Pro with a 1,920-by-1,200 resolution. The one thing holding me back from giving the Apple MacBook Pro 17-inch (Core 2 Duo T7700) an Editors' Choice is the lack of less-expensive configuration options.

Lightweight 17-incher has a beautiful screen and comes loaded with useful software. It's fast, too. For people who appreciate finer laptop accoutrements such as a backlit keyboard and a slot-fed DVD drive, Apple has crafted another tasty offering in the form of the 17-inch MacBook Pro. Sleek, powerful, and able to run Windows as well as the Mac operating system, the MacBook Pro makes a strong case for becoming anyone's ultimate notebook. Equipped with a 2.4-GHz Core 2 Duo T7700 processor, the maximum 4GB of RAM, a 160GB hard drive, and nVidia's new top-of-the-line notebook graphics card, the nVidia GeForce 8600M GT, our $2949 test unit set new speed records. The MacBook Pro outperformed the rest of the notebooks we tested, all of which claim Windows as their primary--nay, their only--operating system. We loaded Windows Vista Home Premium on the Apple notebook, and it snagged a WorldBench 6 Beta 2 score of 88. In games it achieved a blazing frame rate of 141 frames per second in Far Cry (with antialiasing turned off). Nevertheless, the MacBook Pro is elegantly designed and remarkably mobile for a 17-inch notebook.

If you touch the computer it results warm, but much cooler than my previous MacBook Pro with the lower limit of the cooling fan setted to 2000 rpm. Moreover the brightness of the screen is clearly great then the other model. The screen resolution is phenomenal. You can easily put side by side two text documents and read them easily. Finally i'm pleased with this new computer, a good step ahead respect the previous models.

80% You could get a faster Windows rig for the same price, but it wouldn't have the OSX bells and whistles of Apple's latest 17-inch notebook.
Source: Laptop Mag Anglais EN→FR Archive.org version
For the price, you could certainly get a faster 17-inch Windows notebook, even one with a high-def DVD drive (which Apple doesn't yet offer). But it won't have all the Apple software and hardware extras, it'll weigh at least two pounds more, and it won't look nearly as good. We recommend opting for the standard 2GB of RAM instead of 3GB, which will bring the price down to $2,799.

Source: CNet Anglais EN→FR Archive.org version
The 13.3-inch Apple MacBook and 15.4-inch MacBook Pro, both featuring Intel Core 2 Duo processors, impressed us by mixing Apple's lauded industrial design and user-friendly operating system with the kind of high-end hardware usually seen only on the PC side--not to mention the ability to run Windows XP through Boot Camp. The high-end 17-inch MacBook Pro adds some hard drive space and screen real estate over the 15-inch MacBook Pro, boosting the base price by $300. The $2,799 system (our $3,374 review unit was tricked out with extra RAM) is very light for a 17-inch laptop, and it's a good choice for anyone needing an easily transportable big-screen laptop, although most users will be just as happy with the excellent 15-inch version.

Apple launches the 17” MacBook Pro, the light and intelligent laptop.

The Apple MacBook Pro delievers performance for every penny you pay for it. The fastest (until now) Intel Core Duo processor, lots of RAM and a display to drop you jaw, this laptop is the best decision a graphics professional could make. For the everyday users, instead, there are cheaper laptops out there to give you a close performance and to make your friends envious. Our marks for the Apple MacBook Pro are 8.6 for design and 8.2 for the tech specs.

Following on the heels of the 15.4-inch MacBook Pro and replacing the 17-inch PowerBook G4, the 17-inch MacBook Pro delivers many of the same beloved features as its little sibling, such as a scrolling track pad, the Sudden Motion Sensor, and an excellent software package, and adds a huge, bright 17-inch display that's great for graphics work. Better yet, our fully loaded test configuration powered through most of CNET Labs' performance tests, exhibiting only a few of the growing pains encountered by other Intel-based Apple laptops and desktops, such as the iMac Core Duo. Of course, such performance doesn't come cheap: the 17-inch MacBook Pro's default configuration costs $2,799 (upgrades on our review unit brought the price up to $3,099).

It shares many of the same pleasing features found in the smaller MacBook Pro 15-inch model, including Front Row, the MagSafe adapter, the iSight camera, and the iLife '06 suite. And best of all, despite this MacBook's larger 17-inch screen, it's not too difficult to tote. As the first Apple laptop to be powered by an Intel dual-core processor, the Apple MacBook Pro promises much faster performance than the PowerBook. It also boasts a much brighter display than its 15-inch predecessor, one of the best webcams we've ever seen, and a slick interface for accessing your favorite pictures, movies, and music. All of this comes in a design that's still a full pound lighter than most Windows-powered mainstream laptops. Unfortunately, there's simply not enough software available that's been optimized for Intel's chip, but Apple has an ingenious but unsupported work around for that issue.

Commentaire
