Just when I thought the Acer Chromebook 516GE was an unbeatable gaming Chromebook, the Vibe CX34 flip comes along and gives it serious competition. The screen is fantastic, the size isn’t an issue, it’s speedy enough for any realistic Chromebook task and the keyboard and touchpad haven’t put me off during several days of work. While I’d still be tempted towards the Acer 516GE for its bigger, higher-resolution screen, the Asus is going to be a more manageable and practical device for many people. More mobile Chromebook users might want a slightly thinner, lighter option, and the Acer Chromebook Spin 714 has this covered, along with a little more performance. Yet this Asus is one of the best 14in Chromebooks out there, whether you’re buying for work, study or play.

The Asus Chromebook Vibe CX34 Flip is undoubtedly a very well-designed ChromeOS laptop. Its dazzling screen, ergonomic hinged display, well-positioned speakers and solid battery life make it ideal for streaming games over the cloud, as well as a luxe Chromebook feel. Given the limits of ChromeOS, you are still paying a premium for a device that can’t play AAA games locally. However, the gaming nature of this machine means you’re getting some features that undoubtedly enhance everyday use making it one of the best devices around for cloud gaming. The Vibe CX34 Flip also shines against its key competitor in the ChromeOS gaming realm, the Acer Chromebook 516 GE, presenting higher quality hardware and a better display. Though, it can’t be ignored that you can get more bang for your buck, whether through better battery life or native gaming performance elsewhere. If a well-made convertible Chromebook with a bright screen, solid keyboard/trackpad combo, stowed stylus, plenty of power, and great battery life is what you need, I’d say this is a really great option. Normally I’d say to wait for a sale, but that’s just not in the cards for this one anytime soon. Conversely, if you need a good camera or you happen to place a priority on a thin/light Chromebook, this one’s probably not for you. But more than likely that’s a small subset of users, and I’d wager most people looking for a great Chromebook will find a lot to like in the Vibe CX34 Flip. I know I’ve loved it and I think if you are ready to spend the money to invest in a high-end Chromebook, you probably will too.

So, after some tough love about the state of gaming Chromebooks as a concept, where do I stand with the ASUS Chromebook Vibe CX34 Flip? You might think I wouldn’t recommend it, but I actually love the device! It has a great screen, good audio, blazing performance, ports galore, a handy stylus, and an outstanding design. I would like how it looks and feels even if I wasn’t a gamer, and its formidable specs mean it’s perfectly capable of handling productivity workloads that are out of reach for some regular Chromebooks. Overall though, the ASUS Chromebook Vibe CX34 Flip is an outstanding Chrome OS laptop. If you like Chrome OS, and value a high-quality computer, then this Chromebook is definitely one you’ll enjoy. You’ll just need to set your expectations and know what you’re getting is a capable gaming Chromebook, not a great gaming laptop.
