The Pixel Slate is a frustrating device to use and a hard product to score. If you dive fully into Chrome OS with the keyboard cover then it can - for most basic tasks - be used as though a Windows or Mac might be, with Android apps filling in the software blanks. But the weak processing power of the low end models, expense of the keyboard, lacklustre tablet mode and buggy Play Store integration mean this is a messy user experience. It’s too expensive and has too many issues to fully recommend unless you have low end needs or want the only Chrome OS tablet Google makes. If you must have this form factor, get a Surface Pro instead.

The Pixel Slate only really makes sense as an evolution of Google’s own-brand high-end Chromebook line. In that context, it’s a fine successor to the convertible Pixelbook, although that too nestles in a confusing niche given that virtually every other Chrome OS device is both lower power and lower cost. The dream of a joint Android tablet and serious laptop is worthy, but not fully realised here.

So yes, the Pixel Slate can replace your laptop if you buy a keyboard. But you need to spend nearly £1,000/$1,000 on those two things to get a set up fast enough for you not to go mad with frustration - and with that you still get an annoying tablet experience and a laptop that isn’t fun to actually use on your lap if you get the Google keyboard.

Like with the iPad Pro, too often I ran into frustrations that the Pixel Slate threw into my path, and sent me scurrying back to my regular laptop. And the cold reality is that the App Store has more to suit Apple’s tablet than the Play store has for Google’s. Factor in that the Pixel Slate – with expensive and pretty much essential keyboard attached – is thicker than the Pixelbook, not to mention the annoyances of trying to perch it on my lap, and I think I’d still go for the far more affordable convertible notebook not its new tablet sibling.

Google almost certainly knows it won't sell millions upon millions of Pixel Slates, but it can also take a few moments and enjoy the fact that every goal was accomplished and the Pixel Slate is an amazing product where it counts.

The base model of the Pixel Slate starts at $599 which gets you an Intel Celeron processor 4 or 8GB of RAM and 32 or 64GB of storage, respectively. The highest end model costs $1,599 and comes with an 8th Gen Intel Core i7 processor, 16GB of RAM and 256GB of storage. These prices don’t include the $199 Slate Keyboard or the $99 Pixelbook — you’ll have to buy them separate. Even the base model’s price can add up very quickly. Without at least one of these accessories, you won’t get the most out of the Pixel Slate.

There so much about the Google Pixel Slate to love, including its beautiful screen, comfortable keyboard, great sound and long battery life. Unfortunately, this machine comes with a few asterisks, including some notable bugs that Google should fix soon. It will take longer, though, for Google Play apps to feel like native tablet apps. If performance and battery life are your top priorities, check out the 12.9-inch iPad Pro ($999 with optional $199 keyboard), but realize that iOS may not have everything you need to replace your current laptop, especially if you use external storage or prefer to have a touchpad. If you prefer Windows, check out the Surface Pro 6, which costs $1,128 with keyboard and pen. Right now, I'd say that the Pixel Slate feels like a device for the adventurous types who love Android and Chrome, and are OK with some first-gen bugs. Once those issues are cleared, though, Google's got an excellent 2-in-1 on its hands.

Google’s Pixel Slate definitely is a mixed bag. On one hand, the higher processor models are great for mobile productivity — with some caveats and issues. Chrome OS is definitely has a nicer feeling on a tablet of this size over Android. While you can do most productivity work using Chrome OS or Android Apps, there’s still some “full-blown” software like Photoshop or Lightroom that you’ll be missing.

At the highest end, you could potentially spend close to two thousand dollars for the Pixel Slate and all of its accessories. For that kind of money, buying a proper Windows laptop or MacBook makes much more sense. Unless you highly value the convenience of having a detachable keyboard, ultra portability, and a true tablet experience when you want it, the Pixel Slate isn’t worth the premium.

La plupart des jeux pas trop demandants actuels peuvent tourner de façon fluide. soyez prêts à endurer un rendu graphique assez moche à cause de la basse résolution et des détails au minimum. Par ailleurs ces cartes sont suffisantes pour un travail de bureau et le visionnage de vidéos (pas évident pour la vidéo HD).
