EN→FR Archive.org versionThe notebook we are looking at today is the G2 notebook which comes outfitted with a ATI Radeon Mobility X1700, a large 17" LCD screen, and some unique lighting features. In the end, I think the Asus G2 is a good gaming product for the mid-range market. It doesn't break the bank like your typical SLI notebook and provides some decent game performance. The Asus G2 is a well rounded product offering a excellent balance of price, CPU performance, gaming ability, and slick style. However, if you're really serious about gaming I would suggest researching other models as they may prove to offer more gaming bang for the buck.

The performance and specs of the laptop matches most 15.4” notebooks, but in terms of graphics and other 17” notebook there is much to be desired. The notebook is geared towards people looking for an excellent screen, and good CPU performance and average graphical power. It is a desktop replacement for midrange performance and those who wouldn’t mind using a relatively low native resolution. In the end the notebook did meet all my needs in a 17” notebook, except for graphics. Like many we would want something much more powerful like a 7900GS or GTX or an ATI comparable solution. The price is also a bit steep for what you are getting when considering the GPU can be improved. Look forward to other 17” gaming laptops, and possibly the rumored Asus G3.

Until then, this preview should let you know that there is a new player in the enthusiast gaming notebook market. Although they have served as an ODM for several of their competitors in this segment, ASUS is now wanting a piece of the pie themselves and are taking this market seriously.

Commentaire
ATI Mobility Radeon X1700: L’ATI Mobility Radeon X1700 détrône l’ATI Mobility Radeon X1600. Elle attend de très bonnes performances grâce à son nouveau Silicone. Grâce aux pixel- et aux vertex-pipelines additionnels elle est bien meilleure que la X1600 et donc suffisante pour les jeux en qualité haute. Son adversaire pourra être la NVIDIA GeForce Go 7700. Une version XT plus rapide (nom de code: M66-XT) est déjà disponible.
Seuls les vieux jeux peuvent tourner de façon fluide sur ces ordinateurs (S'ils ne sont pas trop gourmands en ressources). Les coeurs à mémoire partagée de cette catégorie ont l'avantage d'être moins chaud et moins gourmand en énergie. Pour le bureau, internet, l'édition de photos, et le montage vidéo ces cartes graphiques n'ont aucune restrictions.

Intel Core 2 Duo:
C'est le successeur du Core Duo avec des pipelines 5-20% plus rapides sans consommation supplémentaire. Comme une addition à la conception du core duo là existe un quatrième décodeur, une SSE-unité amplifiée et une unité logique arithmétique additionnelle (ALU). Le core 2 duo pour ordinateurs portables est identique aux processeurs de core 2 duo d'ordinateur de bureau mais les portables fonctionnent avec des tensions inférieures et une vitesse de Frontside. L'exécution des portables également synchronisés est 20-25% inférieure à des ordinateur de bureau en raison de fréquence d’horloge inférieure de Frontside et plus lents de disques durs.
