Avec son Ryzen AI 9 HX 370, AMD nous délivre un processeur mobile puissant, suffisamment pour prouver que l’architecture x86 n’est pas soudainement devenue ringarde face à la première vague de processeurs ARM, lancés par Qualcomm. Cela dit, AMD ne reprend pas à proprement parler l’avantage face aux meilleurs Snapdragon X Elite, et ne fait pas aussi bonne impression qu’on l’aurait voulu sur le plan graphique. Quant au Zenbook S16 en lui-même, il délivre une expérience d’utilisation d'une manière générale très convaincante grâce à un design sophistiqué, mais aussi grâce aux performances malgré tout solides, décrites plus haut. Son autonomie généreuse et son expérience d’affichage quasi parfaite (si l’on excepte la réflectance de l’écran) sont aussi à porter à son crédit. On déplore toutefois la chauffe vigoureuse de l’appareil lorsque son processeur est fortement sollicité. Sur ce point, ASUS déçoit.

L'histoire de l'Asus Zenbook S 16 de 2024 démarre naturellement par son design, et ce fameux « ceraluminium ». Le nouvel alliage a définitivement le mérite d'être séduisant, mais c'est surtout dans la qualité de fabrication développée sur ces dernières années que l'on reconnaît le travail d'Asus aujourd'hui. Avec ce Zenbook S 16, il offre un appareil léger et performant qui n'oublie pas d'avoir une large connectique. Et cette dernière est très importante. Dans le contexte de l'arrivée du Ryzen AI 9 HX 370, on peut voir que la partie CPU n'est pas particulièrement révolutionnaire, mais vient jouer la bataille. On peut aussi voir que l'autonomie reste celle de la plateforme x86 à son meilleur, mais pas aussi intéressante que l'arrivée de Qualcomm. Par contre... le GPU intégré est tout simplement le meilleur disponible actuellement.

Prices for the laptop start at $1,399. It is a little expensive, although I'd argue it's well-priced for what you're getting. If you want something more budget friendly, check out the Asus Vivobook Pro 15 which is currently on sale for $899 ($400 off the regular price).

Frankly, I was taken aback by the ZenBook S 16. I did not expect a 16-inch Windows notebook powered by a traditional chip to be as slim, light, and portable as the MacBook Air. That alone is a major selling point, given that the AMD-powered notebook falls right in between a MacBook Air and a MacBook Pro. This isn’t a perfect machine, though. Its size and performance give the ZenBook S 16 an edge over the competition, even though the battery life may not surpass that of notebooks from Qualcomm and Apple.

The Ryzen 9 AI HX 370 is one of the best laptop chips we’ve tested, achieving high-riding scores in benchmarks and helping the Zenbook S 16 feel responsive in day-to-day use, too. In addition, its 3K 120Hz OLED panel offers the sacred blend of being responsive and detailed with gorgeous colours and contrast, as well as deep blacks. The 78Whr battery inside also offers solid endurance, too. Where competitors such as the Dell XPS 14 (2024) have caveats such as a shorter battery life or weaker performance, the Zenbook S 16 (2024) doesn’t.

The ASUS Zenbook S 16 (UM5606) combines tons of processing and AI power thanks to the all-new AMD Zen 5 CPUs with a dedicated NPU. Despite the thin profile, the Ryzen AI 9 HX 370 can sustain a 28W power limit plus ~2.70 GHz / 1.80 GHz clock for performance and efficient cores in long loads which is a good result for a machine that weighs a kilo and a half. The AMD Radeon 890M can show more than 40 FPS on Ultra details in games such as Far Cry 6 and Gears 5 which is a respectable score for an iGPU. The comfort under load is surprisingly good. The keyboard doesn’t feel too hot to the touch even when the CPU is loaded at 100% and the fans aren’t intrusive when the “Full-speed mode” or “Performance mode” mode is applied.
