EN→FR Archive.org versionThe 840 G1 has distinguished, get-down-to-business looks, a great design, robust performance and all the correct corporate options. My only caveat is that if an eraser-head is your preferred cursor-control tool, be sure you try before you buy.

EN→FR Archive.org versionHP's EliteBooks have been perennial favorites among business buyers, and with good reason—the series offers security, durability, and ergonomics at an affordable price. The HP EliteBook 840 G1 business laptop provides an outstanding keyboard and touch pad, long battery life, and a VGA port in a sleek, affordable package. Just be prepared to accept some compromises.

EN→FR Archive.org versionWe were pleased with the Elitebook 840 G1’s screen, too. The Elitebook 840 G1’s 1,920x1,080 resolution looked razor sharp on its 14in display and its matt finish diffused reflections very well. The screen’s image quality was also excellent. Our colour calibrator showed it was displaying 89.4 per cent of the sRGB colour gamut, which is high, and reds, greens and blues all looked bright and crisp. Our black level reading of 0.25cd/m2 was equally excellent. Solid blacks appeared deep and inky onscreen, with no signs of backlight bleeding whatsoever.

EN→FR Archive.org versionAs a daily workhorse, it’s easy to get comfortable with the EliteBook 840 G1 – its 14in form factor and full HD display hitting a sweet spot for portability, productivity and practicality. There are some compromises though and battery life is the most obvious and may be the reason why HP is somewhat ambiguous about which models qualify as Ultrabooks, so it’s just as well you can easily swap out the power pack for another. Relying on an HDD does undermine the benchmark performance but it's not especially noticeable once everything is running. There’s an M.2 flash cache option to give the EliteBook 840 G1 a shot in the arm, which sounds like a great idea - if only HP could find them.

EN→FR Archive.org versionFor some reason this is classed as a business product. For that reason I am told it comes with Windows 7 Pro but also Windows 8 upgrade ready on the unit at no extra cost so you can choose. I was sent the non-touch version.

EN→FR Archive.org versionThe HP EliteBook 840 G1 is a tough laptop, both from a build and software point of view. Built to the military's MIL-STD 810G standard, the 840 G1 can survive more than average wear than tear. Even better, thanks to its Intel vPro and custom HP security technology it should, if set up correctly, be fairly hacker proof. Even though it doesn't boast as good a battery life as HP claims and despite it being slightly chunky, the HP EliteBook 840 G1 is still a solid choice for any business user in need of a high-performance ultrabook.

EN→FR Archive.org versionIt's a shame that the EliteBook doesn't include a solid-state drive that can really make the most of its powerful processor and GPU, but this is still a well-designed and versatile laptop that will appeal to many business users. The high-quality display is particularly suitable for presentations, while its sturdy design, security features and battery life will appeal to anyone that spends a lot of time out on the road.
