Le Honor 20 Pro n’est pas une nouveauté, c’est certain (lancement en mai 2020 à 599€). Mais il présente plusieurs avantages en cette année 2020. D’une part, son prix à fortement baissé (et on le trouve en grosse promotion sur le site officiel de la marque). Et d’autre part, car il s’agit d’un des derniers mobiles Honor à disposer de la “certification” Google. Ce qui veut dire qu’il dispose du PlayStore, et des applications Google. Ainsi que de mises à jour de son système d’exploitation.

La question de la note autour du Honor 20 Pro a été épineuse tant la firme chinoise a réussi à nous ravir pour chaque sortie de téléphone. Or avec les problèmes rencontrés par la firme, dont ils ne sont absolument pas responsables, laissent un goût amer. Tant et si bien qu’à la sortie du téléphone, un constat ressort : ce mobile est soit trop cher, soit trop dépassé. A date, le Honor View 20 est sans doute encore aujourd’hui le meilleur appareil produit par la firme. Pourtant les promesses du Honor 20 Pro sont belles : un appareil photo performant, une belle autonomie et une puissance remarquable. Cependant la qualité de l’écran ainsi qu’un choix de design sans prises de risques sont assez regrettables.

Un moment incertain pour le marché français, le Honor 20 Pro est maintenant une réalité commerciale. Lancé officiellement avant l’été, au regard des sanctions américaines contre Huawei, le Honor 20 Pro profite pourtant des services de Google et de son système d’exploitation Android 9. Récemment, nous avons publié le test complet du Honor 20, très similaire. Le 20 Pro arrive avec des capacités de mémoire vive et de stockage augmentées, un troisième capteur embarquant plus de pixels et une batterie plus importante. Nous avons pu le tester pleinement pendant plusieurs jours et voici nos impressions.

Le Honor 20 Pro est un très bon smartphone, particulièrement équilibré et bourré de qualités. Son autonomie, la qualité de ses photos et ses performances dans les jeux en font l'un des meilleurs appareils sur ce segment de prix. Çà et là, le smartphone peut être battu par ses concurrents. Le Xiaomi Mi 9 propose un meilleur écran, mais pas de si belles photos. Le OnePlus 7 est plus puissant, mais il n'a pas une telle autonomie. Dans l'ensemble, le Honor 20 Pro est un smartphone très équilibré. Le format est agréable, le lecteur d'empreintes très bien pensé et les appareils photo sont particulièrement polyvalents. C'est tout simple, Honor a enfin réussi à se mettre à niveau face à la concurrence. Le Honor 20 Pro n'est pas exempt de défaut, mais c'est tout simplement l'un des smartphones les plus équilibrés autour de 500 euros.

À l’image du Honor 20, le Honor 20 Pro déçoit. Malgré sa bonne fiche technique, il a laissé passer devant lui une série de flagship-killers dignes de ce nom et bien moins chers. De plus, très peu d’éléments différencient la version Pro de la version classique. Au final, le Honor 20 Pro propose une expérience quasiment identique à celle du Honor 20. Difficile donc de justifier le prix de ce téléphone.

Dans l’ensemble, les différences entre le Honor 20 Pro et le Honor 20 semblent minimes. L’écran (LCD, grrr), les performances, l’autonomie, la qualité audio, le design (à quelques détails près), l’interface : on ne compte plus les similitudes entre les deux modèles. Mais alors, pourquoi choisir la version Pro plutôt que le modèle standard déjà très bon ? Un peu de RAM et de stockage supplémentaires ? Certes, mais encore ? L’appareil photo, bien sûr ! Avec son quadruple module photo, le Honor 20 Pro entre dans la cour des grands. Mieux, il surclasse des ténors du marché grâce à sa polyvalence. À 599 euros, ce serait une erreur de ne pas s’y intéresser. Alors à 499€ pour son lancement... Enfin, ce n’est que notre avis.

The Honor 20 Pro has a lot of similarities to the Honor 20. One would question would I need the 20 pro when the Honor 20 is basically the same thing. Apart from a few changes. The key differences and what makes this phone worth the purchase are the optical zoom and overall camera. If I was going to find fault with this phone being left-handed the fingerprint sensor is on the wrong side of the phone but it is something you can handle and was not a deal-breaker. Once you get used to that you will find unlocking your phone much better compared to the face ID in an iPhone X that sometimes does not work. Another issue I have with this phone is it’s not water-resistant so be careful when you take your phone down by the pool or beach on holiday. The Honor 20 Pro is not able to use wireless charging but with massive battery life and the fact you have fast charging you can live without wireless charging.

Our expectations before we tested the Honor 20 Pro may have been raised because of the good test results of its camera capabilities when launched in May. However, the overall results for audio were rather disappointing: the speaker scores were inadequate (but not the worst), although spatial playback was a particular problem. However, the flagship device from Honor fared better as a recording device. It did stumble occasionally, but only on the use cases that all the other devices have found difficult, such as recording electronic concerts. On the whole, the Honor is worth a consideration for those who don’t want to spend premium flagship money on a smartphone but still desire decent sound performance.

Of bigger concern is the fact that Honor is being subjected to some serious competition from the like of Xiaomi and Nokia (HMD), Samsung and Motorola – the last three of which have got a bigger high street presence. This would be fine if it was not for the £549.95 price tag, as this is a very hotly contended area on the market right now. The real problem is that other manufacturers are putting in devices with competing specs and also in some cases better specs for the same level of money or less. I feel that for this reason the more sensible choice is the cheaper but by no means inferior Honor 20. The exception to that rule is if you need a high performing camera phone without the high price ticket, then you would be best served with the Honor 20 Pro.

Lastly, I would like to mention the fingerprint reader – it is great. I have to say that I do like a physical fingerprint reader over the under-screen/in-screen option. I guess it is just from my Xperia days, but it just feels right and 9 times out 10 it will work exactly as prescribed. Something that cannot be said for the former versions. So I commend Honor for being “brave” enough to buck the trend and use it here.

Given 111 points by DxOMark, it's certainly a powerhouse camera phone that most consumers can utilize, particularly in low-light photography and portrait modes. Its zoom performance is topped only by the current number one device, the Huawei P30 Pro; and the 20 Pro’s ultra-wide-angle and macro camera, while not currently covered by our test protocol, should provide added value to many mobile photographers. La plupart des jeux pas trop demandants actuels peuvent tourner de façon fluide. soyez prêts à endurer un rendu graphique assez moche à cause de la basse résolution et des détails au minimum. Par ailleurs ces cartes sont suffisantes pour un travail de bureau et le visionnage de vidéos (pas évident pour la vidéo HD).
