Nos trois interrogations initiales ont désormais une réponse. Oui, le Fairphone 5 remplit toutes ses promesses en matière de réparabilité et de durabilité. Oui, le concept unique de ce téléphone a encore du sens en 2023. C’est un smartphone qui montre la voie. Et enfin non, le Fairphone 5 est beaucoup moins paradoxal que ses prédécesseurs. C’est un modèle moderne qui saura accompagner au quotidien de nombreux utilisateurs. D’ailleurs à ce sujet, il ne faut pas se fier aux apparences. Derrière ses étiquettes « durable » et « équitable », il ne faut pas non plus voir un chemin de croix technologique. Pendant un mois, j’ai utilisé le Fairphone 5 avec plaisir et sans aucune restriction majeure, hormis pour du gaming AAA. Si pour vous un smartphone sert avant tout à naviguer sur Internet, se divertir, écouter de la musique, consulter ses mails et prendre quelques photos. Alors, vous ne vous sentirez pas frustrés.

Que personne ne se fourvoie : le rapport qualité/prix du Fairphone 5 est très mauvais. Pour le même prix, vous pouvez vous acheter un Pixel 7 ou un Galaxy S de l'année dernière. Des smartphones qui, eux aussi, dureront dans le temps, grâce à leur gamme et à leurs mises à jour. Pourtant, Fairphone a des arguments à revendre avec son dernier modèle. Cinq ans de mises à jour majeures, des pièces détachées accessibles et une éthique bien plus grande que chez les autres constructeurs : tous sont des arguments qui peuvent séduire. Tout cela fait du Fairphone 5 un smartphone correct, mais pas pour son prix. Son public cible est alors restreint. Si vous êtes un acheteur pas très regardant sur les performances ou la photo sur un smartphone, que vous avez de l'argent à dépenser et que vous voulez le modèle le plus éthique, alors il est fait pour vous. Tout en gardant sa conception éthique et son aspect modulaire, le Fairphone 5 se démarque du Fairphone 4 grâce à son écran de meilleure qualité et ses performances à la hausse. Il ne corrige cependant pas tous les défauts de son prédécesseur, à commencer par un appareil photo à la qualité discutable et une autonomie en berne. On peut aussi regretter que le smartphone ne soit pas évolutif dans la mesure où les modules ne servent pas à améliorer le téléphone, mais à le réparer. Dire que le prix du Fairphone 5 est élevé ne serait pas juste. Il faut en effet prendre en compte des éléments importants comme sa garantie étendue et son support logiciel inégalé, ainsi que la facilité déconcertante avec lequel vous pouvez changer certains composants. Autant d'atouts qui lui offrent une durée de vie énorme si on la compare aux autres smartphones du marché. Si vous cherchez un smartphone durable, équitable et qui peut vous accompagner pendant longtemps, le Fairphone 5 est un choix évident.

J'aurais donné la note de 4,5/5 au Fairphone 5 si son autonomie avait été meilleure. Les progrès par rapport au Fairphone 4 sont indéniables. L'écran est meilleur. Le module photo est meilleur. Les performances sont meilleures. La modularité est meilleure. Seule son autonomie faiblarde lui fait perdre des points ainsi que l'incertitude sur la capacité de son SoC à rester compétitif pendant 8 ans. Mais malgré ça, je vais très sérieusement l'utiliser en tant que daily et j'envisage aussi d'installer /e/OS de Murena pendant un temps histoire de pousser le délire du zadiste 3.0 jusqu'au bout. Je vous explique pourquoi ça ne sert à rien d'être obsédé par les specs de votre smartphone. J'ai réellement envie de voir si mon expérience utilisateur sera sérieusement amputée par une fiche technique "limitée" pour un smartphone de 700 euros ou pas.

Le Fairphone 5 se démarque dans l’arène des smartphones avec son approche axée sur la réparabilité, la durabilité et la responsabilité environnementale. Doté d’une batterie remplaçable, d’un design modulaire, offrant cinq ans de garantie constructeur ainsi que huit ans de mises à jour de sécurité, il s’adresse avant tout à ceux qui valorisent la longévité, et qui cherchent à réduire leur empreinte carbone et à faire un investissement dans le temps. Cependant, force est de constater que le Fairphone 5 ne rivalise pas totalement avec ses concurrents haut de gamme, tant en termes de performances brutes que d’ambitions photographiques. Son prix semble donc un peu élevé au regard de sa fiche technique, mais se justifie par l’assurance de pouvoir conserver ce téléphone pendant de nombreuses années.

Avec ce modèle 5, Fairphone peaufine son smartphone éthique et modulaire. Une évolution qui va dans le bon sens cette année avec de très nettes améliorations au niveau de l'écran et de la photographie mobile. Certains points nous laissent sur notre faim, telles son autonomie et sa vitesse de recharge. Ces axes d'amélioration seront sans doute pris en compte pour le prochain modèle. Toujours est-il que faire le choix Fairphone s'inscrit dans une démarche engagée ; et même si modulaire ne veut pas dire évolutif, ce smartphone pourra tenir la route pendant des années encore. Un argument à prendre évidemment en compte avant l'achat.

When evaluated in individual test cases, the Fairphone 5 was behind most other devices in our database. But its autonomy was relatively decent when idling with the screen off, or when streaming music or video in 4G and music streaming, compared to other test cases. In outdoor testing, the Fairphone 5’s autonomy put in a commendable performance in the calling use case, even though it still ranked toward the bottom half of our database. Hold the phone still while taking photos, and it’s possible to get shots that are sharp, clear, and colorful, but the Fairphone 5 can struggle to deal with less ideal shooting situations. If light drops, then detail quickly drops with it, and despite the optical image stabilization, I ended up with several blurry shots where I’d clearly not made enough of an effort to hold the camera still. In low light, the phone produces superficially nice shots, but peer a little closer, and it looks like this is the work of aggressive processing, with a lot of fine detail smoothed out and colors artificially boosted. And despite offering the same 50 megapixels of resolution, shots from the phone’s ultrawide camera end up lacking in detail. But the most overprocessed shots I got out of the Fairphone 5 came from its 50-megapixel selfie camera, which almost had me thinking I had some kind of AI or beautification mode turned on.

I would have given the Fairphone 5 a 4.5/5 rating if its battery had been better. The improvements over the Fairphone 4 are undeniable. The screen is better. The camera module has been improved. Only its weak battery life caused it to shed some points, as does the uncertainty about its SoC's ability to remain competitive 8 years down the road. Despite this, I'm going to use it very seriously as a daily driver, and I'm also considering installing Murena's /e/OS for a while, just to push the Zadist 3.0 delirium to the limit. I really want to see if my user experience will be seriously undermined by a "limited" spec sheet for a €700 smartphone or not. Yes, I agree that the Fairphone 5 isn't worth its €699 price tag in terms of sheer specifications-to-price ratio.

The Fairphone 5’s display experience showed improvement in some areas over its predecessor, the Fairphone 4, which was released two years ago. The main difference is that the Fairphone 5 is now equipped with a higher-resolution OLED screen as opposed to the LCD screen on the Fairphone 4. The device’s screen brightness was well-managed in indoor as well as outdoor conditions, allowing for better readability. When testing touch, the Fairphone 5’s entire screen, notably the edges of the display, responded accurately to the touch, except when it came to gaming. In addition, the gaming experience was affected by many frame drops and aliasing. The area in which the Fairphone 5 fell significantly short was in the video-watching experience. The screen lacked brightness when watching HDR10 videos, and as a result, dark tones showed no details. In addition, the screen displayed a green color cast.

Fairphone’s devices are designed with longevity, reduction of e-waste, fairer sourcing of materials and the welfare of workers in mind. The latest model Fairphone 5 5G comes with only slightly improved camera specifications but major improvements in the software department when compared to its predecessor Fairphone 4. As a result, the Fairphone 5 5G outperformed the 4 by almost 40 points in the DXOMARK Camera tests. The improvements were most noticeable in photo and video, where the new device performed better across most test categories, including exposure, color, texture, noise, artifacts, and video stabilization. Thanks to good detail and well-controlled image noise, the camera did well in bright light conditions, making it a good option for landscape photography and similar photographic genres. In addition, photos and videos were generally exposed nicely.

And if it’s rubbish today, it’ll be really rubbish in a few years. The other point to consider before buying is that I can only assess the phone today. I know from experience that many other current smartphones, especially expensive flagships, will operate in a similar way and be just as capable two or three years into ownership. It’s extremely hard to say if the Fairphone 5 will still be as good (camera aside) as it is today, that all the promised software updates will arrive, and if the device will still satisfy your mobile requirements in eight or even 10 years’ time. But this is the time frame Fairphone expects (hopes?) you to commit to after buying it. Whether you’re prepared to will ultimately come down to your own personal feelings, but based on using it in 2023, the Fairphone 5 is a good everyday smartphone provided you’re not a photographer, and it should represent incredible value for money if you keep it for years.

The rep said the company doesn’t design phones with current users in mind. It focuses instead on enticing new users who might not be on board with buying a phone in 2023 that was launched in 2021 (and looks like it came from the 2017 design room).

The Fairphone 5 is due to hit shelves in the UK and Europe in mid-September, but a US launch isn't on the cards, and its website doesn't ship to the US or Australia. (Its European price, 699 euros, converts to around $765 or AU$1,175.)

Qualcomm Adreno 643: Puce graphique pour smartphones et tablettes, intégrée dans le Qualcomm QCM6490.

La plupart des jeux pas trop demandants actuels peuvent tourner de façon fluide. soyez prêts à endurer un rendu graphique assez moche à cause de la basse résolution et des détails au minimum. Par ailleurs ces cartes sont suffisantes pour un travail de bureau et le visionnage de vidéos (pas évident pour la vidéo HD).

QCM6490: SoC de milieu de gamme avec 8 cœurs Kryo 670 (4x ARM Cortex A78 2,71 GHz Prime Core et 4x ARM Cortex-A55 2,4 GHz) et un modem X53 5G (jusqu'à 3700 Mbps en téléchargement). La puce est fabriquée selon le procédé moderne EUV 6nm de TSMC.

Un écran de plus grandes dimensions permettent des résolutions plus élevées, les détails comme la finesse des lettres seront meilleurs. Néanmoins, un écran de plus petite taille est synonyme de consommation énergétique moindre et souvent d’un terminal plus compact, plus léger et plus abordable.
