Sturdy and stylish, but on the heavy side in terms of weight and price. Weighing in at 1.4kg (without power adapter), the HP 2133 Mini-Note is one of the heaviest netbooks we've seen. There are, however, a couple of very good reasons: build quality and the massive six-cell 55WHr battery.
If you can cope with its size and the high price, this is a solid netbookvon 5: 4, Ausstattung 4, Leistung 3, Display gut, Preis schlecht, Mobilität mangelhaft

HP 2133 Mini-Note netbook resembles on average warrior in shiny and firm armor. But if we ignore a bit weaker performances, that are not crucial in this class, still stays the problem of too big overheating. If HP integrated Intel Atom platform, this will be for certain the best netbook on the market. But, what its price would be and we can expect answer to that question at the beginning of the next year when new version with Intel processor will be presented.

It's such a shame that the Mini Note doesn't capitalize on its chic looks, high resolution display, top-notch sound quality and brilliant near full-size keyboard with a more powerful and efficient processor, but maybe the next upgrade will be in time for the Intel Atom.

HP's 2133 Mini-Note may be designed for business but its solid design and features make it an excellent choice for anyone looking at a netbook computer. The Vista operating system may have some issues with the supplied memory, but its flexibility along with the expansion options make this a standout netbook.

Rarely does a notebook leave us so ambivalent – there's a truly great product within the HP Mini-Note 2133 waiting to get out, if only the ergonomics of the mouse buttons and the low processor performance could be addressed. Until then, the HP Mini-Note can be recommended only to those who can look past these issues at an otherwise superbly finished portable.

Beautifully crafted in silver and gloss black, the HP's Mini-Note 2133 is about as gorgeous as they come. Of all the netbooks, sub notebooks, mini laptops - or whatever you want to call them - it's far and away the best looking of the bunch. Beautiful and blessed with a superb keyboard, but Windows Vista brings the Mini-Note 2133 to its knees.

While it’s somewhat bigger and pricier than other mini-notebooks, the HP 2133 Mini-Note offers a few features that the others don’t, including an adult-size keyboard and a design more suited for road warriors. If all you need is a low-cost laptop that can run Windows, you may want to opt for the 9-inch Eee PC, which costs $549. But if you require more from your mini-notebook—such as Bluetooth 2.0 and an ExpressCard slot—and don’t mind paying for it, the XP version of the HP Mini-Note is an excellent choice.

There are plenty of reasons to love the HP 2133. It's affordable, it's impossibly attractive and it's more comfortable to use than any of its immediate competitors. Its performance is disappointing, however, and we don't like the fact it doesn't include a built-in 3G datacard. We'd recommend it to people who aren't concerned about the performance issue, but for the rest of us, the Eee PC is the mini-laptop machine of choice.

It could have been great, but a few cut corners make the HP 2133 Mini-Note merely 'good' – and that's just not enough in this market.

Were this review based on design and features alone the HP 2133 Mini-Note PC would be walking away with a Recommended Award: that's a fact. It has a superb keyboard and a chassis that's a cut above both the Eee PC and anything we've seen, released or otherwise. Unfortunately for HP there's a lot more to it than this and the Mini-Note struggles to match even the modest exploits of the Eee PC. Its 1.2GHz VIA CPU chugs when shown any kind of video and battery life is poor, managing even less than the none too impressive longevity offered by Asus' machine. If and when HP updates this with something faster, be it Intel's Atom or a new generation VIA CPU, then it could be onto a real winner.

Compared to the Asus Eee, this will offer plenty more oomph for your cash and for those looking for a mini laptop that sports Windows Vista, a better option. However at almost £400 it starts competing more with the Sony Viao's of this world rather than the £212 price tag of the entry-level Eee. While the HP 2133 Mini-Note is a solid performer, we found its tiny trackpad awkward and the glossy screen hard to use on the go. Luckily at least one can be fixed by packing a mouse and the other is saved by a zippy performance, that almost full QWERTY keyboard, 120GB hard drive and solid build.

When the Eee PC came out, we set aside a little portion of our salaries, awaiting the results of a backlash from other manufacturers. The HP Mini-Note is firm proof that it’s been worth the wait – it’s a radical step up from the Eee PC in build quality, and despite the inflated asking price, there are few who will disagree after seeing it face to face that the extra hasn’t been put to good use. It’s just an enormous shame that the 1.6Ghz version won’t be released in the UK, as internally, the slower processor puts it far behind the Eee PC’s Intel processor when it comes to video and multi-tasking. The UK editions are still very capable sub-notebooks, but as upstanding British citizens, we can’t help but feel a little cheated.

Since its release in the tail end of 2007, Asus' tiny little Eee has won itself plenty of admirers. Tiny, light and inexpensive, for people on the move, it's all the laptop they need. Sling it in a bag, and you'd hardly notice it was there, and yet it's still more than capable of the basic, everyday tasks required of it - internet, email or just a spot of word processing. It's stunningly good-looking, impressively usable and keenly priced but, for now at least, poor performance and mediocre battery life leave the Eee on top.

The battery life and performance might be underwhelming, and the price isn’t the very lowest you can pay for a UMPC, but what you’re paying for here is a solid combination of features that matter in a portable computer. It has a full set of ports, a version of Wi-Fi that will work everywhere you go, a real (shock-resistant) hard drive and a full, familiar operating system. Most important of all, the excellent keyboard that means you can do real work when you carry the MiniNote with you, and if you spill your coffee on the keyboard it should survive. With all that, the MiniNote feels as if it should cost more than it does. It’s a real PC that’s small and light enough to carry around; solid and sturdy enough to stand up to being carried around, and so well designed you’ll want to take it with you. The processor in the MiniNote is a Via C7-M; we looked at the 1.2 GHz model, but 1.6 GHz is an option as well.

While an earlier contestant - the Eee PC 701 from Asus - is a great entry-point for the One-Laptop-Per-Child (OLPC) crowd, that mini-laptop's slight keys and featherweight heft makes it feel more like 'My First Computer' than something for the One-Laptop-Per-Adult set. The HP 2133 Mini-Note offers several different options than the Eee. Depending upon which pre-configured model you pick, the HP 2133 Mini-Note ranges anywhere from a $499 (£250) system running Linux to a $749 (£375) model using Microsoft's Windows Vista Business operating system. The HP 2133 Mini-Note is certainly a great option for the classroom or boardroom, but it could be even better with an Intel processor and XP installed.

It didn't take long for PC makers to realize the gold mine ASUS struck with its Eee PC 4G. The Eee PC is a sleek, 2.2-pound ultraportable that costs less than $400—something the UMPC platform had promised but failed to deliver. Now, manufacturers are mobilizing to create an Eee PC "killer," so to speak. The HP Mini-Note is not quite an Eee PC killer, but it's a super-sleek ultra-mobile PC that will sell out as quickly as the Eee PC did.

As a portable device, the HP 2133 Mini-Note PC stands out for its affordable pricing and features. With its beautiful design and aluminum finishing, the Mini-Note comes across as an elegant solution for the needs of our fast paced social environment. The low price point of the Mini-Note will definitely be attractive to users looking for mobility on the go, while its offerings of different hardware configurations and operating systems will appeal to both casual and business users alike. Though it does not hold up to our more stringent benchmark tests, it's hard to fault a machine of this class for its relatively decent performance for its intended usage.

The HP 2133 Mini-Note is one of the most impressive subnotebooks we've ever seen. Unfortunately, the amazing design and solid range of features are diminished by a sub-par processor and a price tag that places this notebook dangerously close to far superior 12-inch notebooks such as the HP tx2000. HP managed to create the single most impressive ultraportable notebook on the market ... and then decided to put a lackluster processor inside. Despite the poor processor performance, the HP 2133 Mini-Note is a remarkably solid machine that could be a perfect fit for students, teachers, or mobile business professionals. If HP decides to replace the VIA processors with the new Intel Atom processors or alternative processors from Intel, the Mini-Note would become the undisputed champion of the subnotebook market.

Talk to HP executives, and they'll tell you that the HP 2133 Mini-Note PC introduced today targets the educational market. Ask about its place in the mainstream laptop segment, and they'll tie you to a chair and tell you it's meant for instructional use. Comment on its VIA processor or choice of operating systems, and they'll wrestle you to the ground and tell you it's designed with K-12 classrooms in mind. While it does compete with Intel's Classmate PC (and, to a much lesser extent, the $200 One Laptop Per Child notebook), the 2133 is unmistakably HP’s response to the two-pound, $400 Asus Eee that's been winning over business travelers -- and putting “Sold Out" signs in retail stores -- since it debuted five months ago.

While the Asus Eee PC and Intel's Classmate and Netbook platforms have convinced us that low-cost, low-power laptops can be genuinely useful, we still long for something a little more upscale than the plastic construction of those systems. Despite an underpowered CPU, the HP 2133 Mini-Note PC offers the best balance of small size, comfort, and functionality we've seen in a mininotebook, making it fast a favorite for on-the-go use.
