Gardez bien en tête une chose : le Microsoft Surface Pro 12 est une tablette, purement et simplement. Poussée sur des applications plus typées ordinateur, elle ne tiendra pas des performances modernes tout en devenant chaude à un point inconfortable. Microsoft a bien écouté quelques critiques, notamment le connecteur Surface Connect dépassé qui disparaît désormais... sans être remplacé, faisant que la connectique se limite toujours à deux ports USB-C. Mais il a aussi ignoré toutes les autres : l'écran reste limité au sRGB, désormais dépassé, quand le chargeur s'ajoute maintenant à la longue liste des accessoires à rajouter au prix déjà élevé de la configuration pour ses performances. Voulez-vous vraiment une tablette premium sous Windows ? C'est au bout du compte la vraie question à vous poser.

Meilleure qu’une Surface Go, mais tellement moins bonne qu’une « vraie » Surface Pro, cette nouvelle Surface Pro de 12 pouces est un produit faussement abordable qui fait moins bien que la concurrence… pour pas tellement moins cher au final. Pas assez puissante, pas assez endurante, sujette à la chauffe et globalement mal positionnée, elle ne permet toujours pas à Microsoft de proposer, enfin, un produit accessible et réellement attractif au sein de sa prestigieuse gamme Surface. Une occasion manquée.

La Microsoft Surface Pro 12 ne sait pas sur quel pied danser. Son châssis est bien construit et léger, oui, mais les performances de sa puce Snapdragon en pâtit logiquement, ce qui limite son utilisation à de la simple bureautique. Pour autant, en utilisation "tablette", elle souffre d'une autonomie limitée par rapport aux avancées du marché et d'une dalle trop brillante. Le ticket d'entrée, avoisinant les 1000 € — sans compter les accessoires clavier et stylet — est bien trop élevé pour justifier de tels compromis.

Le pack complet (Surface Pro 12 + clavier + stylet) vous reviendra à 1279 euros. On est donc sur offre plutôt compétitive pour qui cherche un appareil 2-en-1 robuste, mais il faut rappeler que de sérieux sacrifices ont été faits, aussi bien sur la puce que sur la qualité de l’écran. Nous aurons l’appareil en test dans les prochaines semaines chez Frandroid pour nous faire un avis définitif sur ce nouvel entrée de gamme chez Microsoft.

If all you want is something larger than your smartphone for watching Netflix or browsing the web, then Android tablets like the OnePlus Pad 3, or a basic iPad still makes more sense because they are cheaper and run an operating system designed for fingers. But if you want a device that can do basic tablet stuff and function as a grown-up laptop, then the new Surface Pro 12 is worth serious consideration. The combination of strong performance, outstanding battery life, a superb sound system and a good if not great display for under £800 is a hard combination to ignore. Granted, the price gets a bit steep when you opt for the keyboard and pen package, but you will then have a tremendously useful, versatile and compact Windows device that is ideal for a multitude of uses. By moving to a cheaper Snapdragon chipset, the Windows tablet has just gone from zero to hero. Who’d have thought it?

The Microsoft Surface Pro 12 is a good, solid laptop/tablet hybrid. It’s got enough power for everyday tasks, excellent battery life and a smart design. The display, while not OLED, is very good, and the kickstand remains one of my favourite design features on any tablet. However, this latest Surface shares many of the same issues that have plagued the series. While it’s great that the starting price is less than the MacBook Air M4 at £799/$799, you’ll need to spend more on the keyboard cover to make this a usable device. An iPad Pro M4 is a great tablet with or without a keyboard added, whereas Windows 11 still needs to be controlled with a trackpad or mouse to get the most from it.The design is a little uninspiring with those chunky screen bezels, and many of the AI features remain underbaked. This is a good entry-level Surface Pro that’d make a great student companion – it’s just not a true successor to the Surface Pro 11.

If you're tempted to jump into the world of the Surface Pro, then the 13-inch model launched last year and the 12-inch model for 2025 are undoubtedly the best devices that Microsoft has put out yet. That's true for both design and build quality, and for performance and battery life. The comparison between the 13-inch and 12-inch models is an interesting one, because the bigger model has an OLED screen, better performance, and an actual charging adapter (this 12-inch model only has a USB-C cable), while not costing a whole lot more: $200 at the time of writing. Of course, you may value portability above everything else, in which case get the smaller one. If you've got an older Surface Pro and are thinking about upgrading, your choice isn't an easy one. It really depends how old your existing model is and how happy you are with its current levels of performance.

I’d still like to see Microsoft improve the tablet experience in Windows 11 with a mode that’s more like what existed in Windows 8. But even without those improvements, the 12-inch Surface Pro is as close as Microsoft has ever gotten to fulfilling my dream of a lightweight PC you can throw under your arm and carry around all day without worrying about battery life. It’s still not perfect, but it’s not the heartbreaker the Surface Pro X once was.

Commentaire

Qualcomm Adreno X1-45 1.7 TFLOPS: L'adaptateur graphique intégré dont est doté le SoC Snapdragon X Plus à 8 cœurs X1P-42-100. Comparé aux iGPU X1-85 de 3,8 TFLOPS et 4,6 TFLOPS plus rapides, celui-ci ne fonctionne pas seulement à des vitesses d'horloge inférieures, mais dispose également de moins de shaders unifiés, 768 étant le chiffre le plus probable. L'architecture sous-jacente ne serait pas très différente de celle de l'Adreno 730. Quant à ses performances de jeu, elles sont tout juste suffisantes pour les jeux d'avant 2020 à des résolutions telles que la HD 720p avec des paramètres graphiques faibles.

Ces cartes devraient être capables de faire tourner tout les jeux d'aujourd'hui, mais la plupart d'entre eux uniquement en détails moyens ou faibles et avec des résolution basses. Les plus vieux jeux ou les jeux moins gourmands restent jouables avec de beaux graphismes.

SD X Plus X1P-42-100: Un système sur puce à architecture ARM relativement abordable destiné à être utilisé dans les ordinateurs portables Windows qui devrait être lancé le 20 mai 2024. Le X1P-42-100 disposerait de 8 cœurs de processeur Oryon (8 cœurs P, 0 cœur E) fonctionnant à une vitesse d'horloge non encore connue d'au moins 3 GHz. Un GPU Adreno de 3,8 TFLOPS, un NPU Hexagon de 45 TOPS, un contrôleur de mémoire LPDDR5x-8448 d'une rapidité impressionnante, un support USB 4.0, un support TB 4 et un support PCIe 4 sont très probablement tous embarqués. Cette puce X Plus n'utilise pas la même puce que les X1P-64-100, X1E-78-100, X1E-80-100, X1E-84-100.
