Dell, and by proxy Alienware, are master tweakers. The companies never rest on their laurels and are always working to make something better. This time around, it’s the keyboard. By teaming with Cherry, Alienware has widened the game between the Alienware m17 R4 and its challengers. Not only is it ridiculously powerful with its overclockable Core i7 processor and Nvidia GeForce RTX 3080 GPU, but it’s lovely to play games on a gorgeous display with its super-high refresh rate. And now it’s got that extremely clicky, comfortable keyboard. Still, if power is your main concern, you need to check out the Origin Eon17-X where you can customize to your heart’s content, and even use a desktop CPU. However, all that customizability will come at a cost. But if you’re looking for power, a gorgeous panel and clicky, comfortable keys, the Alienware m17 R4 is the laptop for you.

Recommending the Alienware m17 R4 is both easy and difficult for me. As much as I love the idea of having all this gaming performance in a portable and relatively small package, its price veers into "you can get more with a desktop" territory. That feeling is intensified by the laptop's short battery life, which limits its usefulness as a mobile device. I mean, if you're going to be tethered to a power cord anyway, it's just one more reason to get a desktop. On the other hand, the m17 R4 is a complete package -- right down to its clicky Cherry MX mechanical keyboard. It's slim, it looks fantastic and the components will keep your frame rates high for years. If you're looking for something for travel but not to necessarily use between points A and B, it's a fantastic choice. And if you've got no room for a desktop in your life, the choice is even easier.

We really like the look of Alienware's design language with this model as well. The Lunar Light color scheme is gorgeous, and Alienware did a splendid job giving its laptop a distinct look without being tacky. Purists who prefer a completely conservative design might not dig it, but we do—it offers the right amount of gamer bling without falling into gaudy territory. The m17 R4's mechanical keyboard is a high point, too. It's still a low profile keyboard, which seems inescapable in the realm of laptops. But the key action of the Cherry MX switches is far superior to most standard laptop keyboards. All that said, as configured the Alienware m17 R4 is the fastest gaming laptop we've ever tested, and packs several amenities that make this mobile gaming battle station worth serious consideration.

This isn't our favorite overall premium gaming laptop (the latest Razer Blade 15 and the Alienware m15 R4 share that honor), but it is our top recommendation among 17-inch models and thus still seizes Editors' Choice plaudits for that class of machines. That's especially true if you value performance and style above all else in your giant-screen gamer.

Lisa Gade reviews the early-mid 2021 refresh of the Alienware M17 R4 17.3” slim gaming laptop with NVIDIA RTX 3060, 3070 and 3080 16GB max mobile wattage GPUs and Intel 8-core i7 and i9 CPU options with vapor chamber cooling. We test the i7 with RTX 3070. There’s a new 360Hz full HD G-Sync display option (our unit) in addition to the existing 144Hz full HD and 4K wide gamut displays. The laptop is available with per key and zone AlienFX backlit RGB keyboards and there’s a new Cherry MX mechanical keyboard option. For those who prefer a smaller size, there’s the similarly spec-d Alienware m15 R4 with higher thermals. In this review we focus on gaming temperatures and fps, internals, benchmarks and the new 360Hz display quality. We did not enable Alienware’s new TCC thermal offset for our tests.
