EN→FRThe MacBook Air has always been a popular choice among travelling photographers, as its low price and slim profile make it an ideal second machine alongside a more powerful desktop Mac. With an M5 beating at its heart, the MacBook Air makes a compelling case for being the only computer you need to own: it’s certainly powerful enough, though you may like to add RAM and storage upgrades which will push the price up. What you get is slim, beautifully made, full of advanced features and capable of dealing with any task you might set it, though power users might want to look into the MacBook Pro instead, especially as the Air tops out at 32GB of RAM.

EN→FRAs good a value as the MacBook Neo is – and it definitely is one of the best laptops and best MacBooks you can buy – the MacBook Air M5 should be the default choice for anyone who wants a complete machine that’ll last for a long time. The Neo is great for first-timers and students who will predominantly be typing and watching Netflix, but for those who expect a bit more oomph, then the Air M5 is the go-to. Yes, there’s been a minor price jump, but in return, you’re getting more storage and a very capable chipset that seriously punches above its weight. It’s a slim, light (enough), silent machine that lasts a full day on a charge and has a top-tier keyboard and trackpad. I’d like a better screen, more ports and some more punchy colours – but all those quibbles are minor.

EN→FRFor more than a decade, Apple has sold two distinct versions of the iconic MacBook: the powerful Apple MacBook Pro and the ultraportable Apple MacBook Air. And for that same decade, buyers have had to face the same question: How do I choose the right one for what I do? We've given that question a lot of thought, having reviewed all the new MacBooks annually for years. Testing all those Mac laptops has helped us develop informed opinions about MacBooks in all their sizes and power levels. One important lesson we've learned: When choosing a MacBook, score-by-score performance comparisons have their place, but they are not everything. Apple tends to make variations on one hardware design, sometimes for several years, without significant changes to the chassis and feature set. So, it can help to look at the machines in general terms, not just the fine details. With that in mind, and now that the M5-powered Air laptops are here to even out the performance calculus, here's how the MacBook Air and MacBook Pro lines stack up. We've compared the two in broader terms to help you understand where each make and model might outperform the other, and how each design caters to distinct needs.

EN→FRIs this still the best Mac for most people? The Air certainly hits a sweet spot that the Neo doesn’t. It has fewer compromises – and headroom that’ll ensure it’ll last years longer. Since I primarily work on an iMac and only occasionally need a laptop on the road, I’d probably buy a Neo for myself. But would I get the Air if it was to be my only Mac? Absolutely. I like that it has enough grunt that you don’t really have to think about specs and limits. The screen and design haven’t changed, but they were already very good indeed. And while the price bump stings, the MacBook Air being $999/£999 was a single-year blip, you now get double the storage, and AI is making gadgets more expensive anyway. The middle ground is not a bad place to be, then. Cheaper than the Pro. Better than the Neo. And with its balance of power, design and value, the MacBook Air M5 squeaks Stuff’s top rating. But for playing things a bit too safe, I’m not giving it a fancy badge.

EN→FRThe M5 MacBook Air continues to set the standard for a thin, light and powerful consumer laptop. Its combination of excellent build quality, screen, trackpad, keyboard, speakers, mics and webcam, plus serious performance and very long battery life, just can’t be beat. Some rivals may have better screens. Others have beefy graphics chips or a better selection of ports – the Air has only two USB-C ports. But none are packaged together as well, unless you specifically need Windows or Linux. The big new thorn in the MacBook Air’s side is Apple’s MacBook Neo, which can be bought at roughly half the price of the Air and offers excellent value with many good bits, particularly for general light computing. But the M5 MacBook Air is still a better all-round computer and the one to buy if you’re after a premium notebook to go the distance for work or play.

EN→FRIf you are keeping the score, you would by now understand that I am firmly team Mac when it comes to laptops. The recent machines from Apple are just too good as far as general day-to-day computing needs of users are concerned. And the MacBook Air M5 sits at a sweet spot. It is premium, and it is not exactly cheap. But it is a laptop that is 110 per cent paisa-wasool. It is a laptop that won't fight you when you are trying to meet deadlines. It is a near perfect machine for almost everyone. Except. Yes, except a handful of niche use cases. It is not a gaming laptop. If playing the latest Call of Duty on a laptop is your priority, you should get a gaming laptop. It is also not a laptop on which you can run esoteric Linux applications that your defence industry company uses for the last 15 years. I mean you get the idea. If you are going to run some very specific and specialised application, you are better off with a laptop that can be stripped of its software and then can be customised. Like a Windows laptop. Similarly, if you are going to work on Blender because you are a creative director for the next blockbuster, you should not get the MacBook Air. You should get the MacBook Pro, powered by the M5 Max chipset. But for everyone else looking to get a general-purpose laptop, for their day-to-day use, there is nothing better than the 15-inch MacBook Air powered by the M5 chipset.

EN→FREven without a greater CPU and other small upgrades to deliver on the promise, the MacBook Air is already one of the best laptops in the market for any user. This year’s model offers the promised annual upgrade with a larger hard drive, along with an upgrade in the wider MacBook category, elevated by the now base Neo model. It doesn’t mean that those who need a compelling machine need to search elsewhere though, as Apple continues to make sure this is the one to fit your needs.

EN→FRWhen the MacBook Air was the bottom rung on Apple’s laptop ladder, it was an easy recommendation. Now that the upstart MacBook Neo has snuck in below it, providing surprising performance from its iPhone processor, the Air looks like a trickier proposition. However, given that the performance it provides is much closer to the Macbook Pro than to the Neo, it’s still a relevant purchase for creatives.

EN→FRI ended up needing to pull out and rewire my whole dock setup with new Apple cables to get it to work, even though the existing setup should have worked fine. Even now, I still have issues with one of my displays not having the right resolution when connected to a Mac, but it works fine with Windows. Ultimately, macOS still has its flaws, but after spending more time with it, I’ve really come to appreciate it, especially for work. It feels like macOS does a better job than Windows of getting out of my way and letting me do what I need to do. It’s not perfect, but it’s pretty darn good overall.

EN→FRThe MacBook Air with M5 feels like the kind of meal you get from a restaurant rightly confident in what it cooks. Yes, it’s got the same display I’ve been looking at for years, but it’s a darn good screen. Sure, it’s got the same design and features, with MagSafe charging and only dual USB-C ports, but enough accessories have ditched USB-A at this point. The only reasons to decide against the M5 MacBook Air are for the MacBook Neo’s value or the MacBook Pro’s ports and power. That makes the MacBook Air the Goldilocks pick, because it feels just right.

EN→FRThe 2026 13-inch MacBook Air worked hard to justify Apple's $100 price bump. The M5 processor, new to this line, delivers even faster and more efficient performance than before, comfortably outpacing many PC laptops in its price range. Apple's exceptional build quality and inputs return, and the laptop's battery life is still long (albeit shorter than with the M4 Air). Also, the starting model comes with double the storage, at 512GB. The laptop has no new design or feature upgrades to dive into—we would like to see an OLED screen finally hit the Air, for instance—but Apple's performance, quality, and value leave nothing else to be desired. For that, the 13-inch Apple MacBook Air earns a repeat Editors' Choice award.

EN→FRThe MacBook Air is the workhorse of the MacBook lineup. The MacBook Pro is the expensive, premium, high-speed offering, beyond the needs (and means) of most users. The new MacBook Neo is the inexpensive laptop for new users, students, and those with lesser computing needs. Which puts the MacBook Air in the middle. Premium and performant enough to please almost everyone in the crowd. As always, I feel compelled to complain that Apple’s 60Hz SDR display technology is a bit dated for this price range, but the color accuracy and brightness uniformity are still top-notch. I’d like better speakers, too. But this silent, durable, reliable laptop will get the job done for all but the most demanding users for years to come. There may be little to get excited about, but there’s little to complaint about, too.

EN→FRThe MacBook Neo might be tempting for people who were only buying the MacBook Air because it was the least expensive laptop in Apple’s lineup. But I still think the vast majority of MacBook buyers should get the Air instead if their budget allows it. The M5 MacBook Air has enough memory and storage for most people. It performs well enough that most people will not need to worry about whether their computer can handle any given app or game. It’s light enough that most people will not have trouble carrying it around. You get the picture. The MacBook Air might not be the perfect laptop for everyone, but configured with the right specs, the Air can work for just about anyone. And it’s a nice counterweight to the chaos and uncertainty of the PC market, where even flagship portables from big companies can occasionally ship with bizarre regressions like “battery life worse” or “keyboard doesn’t work.”

EN→FRThis is a harder question to answer with the arrival of the MacBook Neo. Before the Neo, the 13-inch Air was the most affordable path to a MacBook. Now that route has been cut off by the $599 Neo. The Air's M5 processor certainly offers greater performance than the Neo's iPhone chip, but the Air is almost twice as expensive, and its 13.6-inch display is hardly any larger than the Neo's 13-inch panel. I'd argue that once you make the $500 jump to Air territory, it takes only another small hop to get the roomier 15-inch model and is the better option unless you really want to go smaller.

2026 MacBook Air M5 Review - How much faster is the M5, and is it worth upgrading?

EN→FRThe MacBook Air 15-inch M5 offers nice upgrades over the M4 version while keeping the same sleek design, vibrant display, and long battery life. M5 performance impresses, and the doubled 512GB storage and better wireless connectivity are nice bonuses. But as I said, it costs an extra $100 for most of the same features. Overall, the 15-inch MacBook Air M5 is a fantastic laptop for most folks, especially anyone looking for a premium notebook that’s under $1,500. If money is tight, you might want to wait for the inevitable holiday sale. But if you want a 15-inch laptop for the basics and more, you won’t go wrong with this super-sized MacBook Air.

EN→FRThis is one of my shortest reviews to date, so answering the question of who should buy the M5 MacBook Air is quite easy. If you are using an M4 or M3 generation MacBook, do not upgrade; the performance delta does not justify the cost unless your workflow becomes tangibly more complex, in which case, I think the upgrade would mainly stem from upgrading the RAM.

EN→FRThe MacBook Neo is one of the most exciting new laptops I’ve seen in years, and that’s because of everything that isn’t new. Its aluminum design, display and keyboard makes it MacBook-like without being a MacBook Lite. I can’t wait to see how it actually fits into my life at home to determine if it’s as good as I think it is at the moment. For those thinking to preorder the Apple MacBook Neo right now before the generative AI-based memory shortage situation leads to higher prices? EN→FRWhether you use a MacBook Air or MacBook Pro, your story here is pretty similar. Those aching to upgrade may pay slightly more this year, but it looks like they’ll still get a fantastic laptop that will last them for a while. But price-conscious Apple hardware shoppers who own a MacBook released in the last three years may not see enough change here to push them to upgrade, especially since these models are slightly pricier than before.
