L'année dernière, Apple a considérablement amélioré son iPad Air d'un point de vue technique. À tel point que les différences avec l'iPad Pro, en dehors du design, doivent presque être cherchées à la loupe et que le prix s'oriente malgré tout vers l'iPad Mini (qui est vendu à partir de 569 euros). Malgré les dernières avancées des nouveaux modèles d'iPad, l'iPad Air 5e génération est loin d'être une tablette moyenne; en fait, il reste une tablette puissante avec des fonctionnalités exceptionnelles grâce à iPadOS 16, avec encore plus de mises à jour logicielles à venir. De plus, le prix de l'iPad Air devient de plus en plus abordable. En tant qu'utilisateur de l'iPad Air depuis des mois, je peux vous assurer qu'il s'agit d'un appareil qui vieillira bien grâce à l'implémentation de la dernière technologie de SoC d'Apple.

Que laisse-t-il encore à l’iPad Pro ? Un double capteur photo et son LiDAR, Face ID, davantage de stockage, un écran ProMotion (120 Hz) et un port USB-C un peu plus rapide ? Si tout cela vous importe, alors tournez-vous vers les modèles premium d’Apple. Sinon, vous avez là (plus que jamais) un excellent rapport qualité-prix. Même si l’iPad Air fait légèrement grimper la facture en raison de la présence de la puce M1 et de sa compatibilité avec la 5G cette année, si vous n’aviez pas craqué sur le modèle précédent, c’est un excellent iPad Pro pas Pro. Ça a l’allure d’un Pro, la puissance d’un Pro, mais, au final, c’est une belle ristourne sur le prix qui peut faire la différence. L’iPad Air a décidément tout pour lui et peut absolument tout faire sans sourciller, et pour longtemps tant sa puissance est surdimensionnée pour son positionnement en milieu de gamme. Posté entre l’iPad (9e gen) et l’iPad Pro 11", il penche encore plus qu’avant du côté de ce dernier. Au point de se demander si l’un des deux n’est pas de trop…

Si l'on part du principe que l'iPad ne fera pas un saut au pays des Mac, à l'heure actuelle, tous les iPad sont parfaitement aboutis et tous ont été suffisamment mis à jour en 2021 ou 2022 pour apporter satisfaction. Nous continuons à recommander l'iPad de base à la plupart des utilisateurs occasionnels, mais cet iPad Air est une solide avancée, et probablement celui que nous aurions le plus envie d'acheter. Il faut néanmoins avoir à l’esprit que le modèle 64 Go à 699€ n'a pas assez d'espace de stockage. Mieux vaut partir sur la version 256 Go qui coûte 869€. L'iPad d'entrée de gamme vaut 389€ en 64 Go et 559€ en 256 Go. L’iPad Air de base coûte donc presque le double. Ces 310€ supplémentaires valent-ils la peine ? Peut-être. Faut-il plutôt dépenser 899€ pour un iPad Pro 11 pouces qui dispose de 128 Go de stockage et de meilleurs appareils photo, d'un écran 120 Hz, de haut-parleurs plus performants, d’un lidar et de Face ID ? Probablement pas. Mieux vaut attendre de voir ce qu’Apple annoncera cette année concernant ce modèle.

Vient après le choix avec un iPad Pro. Si le taux de rafraichissement de 120Hz de son écran, les 0,1 pouce d’écran en moins, FaceID, les deux haut-parleurs (et deux micros) supplémentaires et le LiDaR ne sont pas importants, on préfèrera clairement l’iPad Air. C’est d’ailleurs sur ces points qui n’intéresseront au final qu’une certaine population qu’on peut conclure que l’iPad Air est la tablette qu’on peut conseiller au plus grand nombre, surtout si vous avez une tablette vieillissante que l’iPar Air 3 ou plus vieux. Le plus gros soucis cette année vient plus du fait que l’iPad Air ne révolutionne pas en soi un iPad Air 4 déjà excellent. Mais ne boudons pas notre plaisir, l’iPad Air 5 est excellent et ne décevra pas.

Des performances dignes d'un modèle Pro à un prix mini tel est le titre de ce test. Apple a considérablement amélioré son iPad Air d'un point de vue technique. À tel point que les différences avec l'iPad Pro, en dehors du design, doivent presque être cherchées à la loupe et que le prix s'oriente malgré tout vers l'iPad Mini (qui est vendu à partir de 569 euros). Cela semble faire partie d'une nouvelle stratégie d'Apple. Après tout, le nouvel iPhone SE 2022 est également équipé d'un SoC si puissant qu'il est quasiment aussi performant que l'iPhone 13. Pourquoi Apple fait-il cela? Bien entendu, le fabricant ne répond pas clairement à cette question. Mais en y regardant de plus près et en y réfléchissant, cette stratégie est tout à fait logique. La puce M1 a maintenant plus d'un an, l'iPad Pro est sorti fin mai ou début juin de l'année dernière. Cela signifie qu'un nouvel iPad Pro recevrait probablement aussi bientôt la puce M2. Ainsi, l'iPad Pro aurait à nouveau un net avantage dans deux mois. Malgré tout, l'iPad Air est une tablette très puissante qui offre en soi tout ce que l'on peut désirer.

Si vous recherchez l’iPad à la fois le plus puissant et le plus mobile, alors l’iPad Air 5 est celui qu’il vous faut. Bien qu’il intègre la surpuissante puce M1, ce nouvel iPad Air reste un modèle de finesse et de légèreté au design aussi cool qu’élégant. Les emprunts à l’iPad Pro M1 sont nombreux. Même si Apple sacrifie quelques technologies (Pro Motion, Face ID, appareil photo), l’iPad Air édition 2022 peut aisément remplacer un ordinateur portable pour la plupart des usages. Pour cela, il faudra tout de même débourser quelques centaines d’euros supplémentaires pour s’équiper du stylet Apple Pencil 2 ainsi que d’un étui-clavier. Finalement, on ne reprochera à cet iPad Air 5 que sa capacité de stockage de seulement 64 pour le modèle standard. Vendu 699 euros avec 64 Go, cette version est quasi anecdotique, aussi Apple oblige presque ses clients à s’orienter vers la version 256 Go, vendue 839 euros. Soit 30 seulement de moins que l’iPad Pro M1 11’’ (128 Go).

Meanwhile, the same gripes we had with the 4th generation Air are all present and accounted for, and the grumbles over the 64GB base storage and 60Hz refresh rate have only gotten louder with the passage of time. The iPad Air is in a weird spot, then. It’s still a fantastic gateway into the iPad ecosystem that offers just enough flexibility to function as an “iPad Pro Lite” for work and play. Likewise, if you only want to stream movies and play a handful of games, the base model is a steal, and its screen, design, and feature set are enough of a bump over the regular iPad to justify the extra spend. But even with all that bleeding edge raw power, the iPad Air (5th gen) feels oddly outdated at times — a tablet that received a massive boost in an area it already excelled in, while neglecting its legacy flaws.

If you’re rocking any pre-2020 iPad and don’t want to go Pro, this is the one to get. Let’s just hope the next Air gets to “tick” off some of those persistent caveats.

The M1 iPad Air is a big leap forward for the mid-range iPad. It has the same processor as the best iPad Pro, access to the same apps and accessories, and it's cheaper without missing key features. You may miss things like FaceID and the four-speaker system, but that's all confetti over what's already an excellent tablet. The issue isn't whether the iPad Air is a great tablet, though—it's whether it has the software chops to back up all that hardware. In many cases, for things like knocking out a few emails or taking notes for class, the Air shines as a working tool. But it still can't do everything a laptop can, and you may not realize it until you've already made the jump. Certain web apps, for instance, may not work on your iPad, so you'll want a desktop or laptop nearby for when those cracks start to show. (Filling out the forms my doctor uses is a horrendous process for that very reason.) That said, the M1 iPad Air is still plenty powerful for most tasks. It may not be able to do serious development work, but it's capable of executing most tasks with ease thanks to that snappy M1 chip.

But keep in mind: The 64GB $599 model doesn't have enough storage. You'll need the 256GB model, which is $750. Apple's entry-level iPad, meanwhile, costs $329 for 64GB of storage and $479 for 256GB. You're paying nearly double the price for the entry-level Air. Is the extra $270 worth it for you? Maybe. Is it worth it to pay another $200 to get the entry-level 11-inch iPad Pro, which has 128GB of storage (more acceptable) and better cameras, 120Hz display, even better speakers, lidar and Face ID? Probably not. I wouldn't pay up for the Pro at this point… not until Apple finalizes its plans for that model later this year.

When it's all said and done, you're looking at $599 for the 64GB iPad Air, $129 for the Apple Pencil and $299 for the Magic Keyboard. That's $1,027 to buy everything you'd need to convert the iPad Air into a 2-in-1 device, with just 64GB of storage. For some that's sure to be enough space, but not for everyone. The base storage model should be 128GB, and it's unfortunate that's not the case. But, really, the base storage is my only gripe with this year's edition of the iPad Air. It's as powerful as the iPad Pro, but costs hundreds of dollars less -- even when you max out the storage -- with a display that's on par with the 11-inch iPad Pro. If you're in the market for an iPad, and the base model and iPad Mini aren't enough for you, the iPad Air is where your search should begin, and most likely, end. The more Apple pays attention to the iPad Air, the less the 11-inch iPad Pro makes sense to me.

At 64GB, though – or if you prize storage over all else and go for that 256GB model – the Air won’t disappoint. It’s a top-notch tablet, supported by an ecosystem that makes it highly versatile for an increasingly wide range of users.

The new iPad Air is an F1 car disguised as a nice mid-range saloon. It's a practical, portable tablet with a great screen and speakers, hiding a processor that's capable of meeting even pro needs. Few people who buy the iPad Air will ever push the M1 hard, but it's not like Apple has raised the price here – it'll do all the basic jobs perfectly, and then if ever get more ambitious, you'll know it can handle it. It's a bit of a shame that the screen is still 60Hz, because certainly the processor can handle 120Hz, and it's a more pleasant experience even outside of using Apple Pencil. And it'd be nice to have stronger camera performance indoors. But I don't consider these dealbreakers – for the majority of people, this is the best tablet on the market.

When I take a few steps back, I think that there are actually two viable new iPad Air options available here. There’s the base 64GB model for people looking for an upgrade over their existing entry-level iPad. Then, beyond that, there is the 256GB model for people really looking to take the plunge and use an iPad as their main computer, but aren’t interested in shelling out the extra cash for a Pro. If you’re looking to upgrade your current iPad and usually spend some time reading and browsing the web, then the standard storage configuration will be enough. You’ll love this iPad’s more modern design compared to the Home button clad models like the 10.2-inch iPad. If you want to save a few bucks and don't care about speed or the modern hardware design, then the $429 standard iPad is still a great tablet. The other iPad Air here is for a completely different customer -- someone who’s looking for the larger 256GB model that’s aimed at creators. These people will likely buy an Apple Pencil or the Magic Keyboard and truly use this as a competitor to the MacBook Air.

Should you buy the iPad Air 5? To be fair — yeah, it is very hard to recommend the iPad Pro over it. You basically get all of the power of the Pro and access to the same accessories — the Apple Pencil and Magic Keyboard. Still, if you are considering an iPad as your serious work machine, the big screen of the iPad Pro 12.9-inch definitely gives you more real estate to play with. But I feel the main comparisons will be drawn between the iPad Air (2022) and iPad Pro 11 (2021). They basically have the same specs, but the iPad Pro 11 has 120 Hz ProMotion display, and there are slightly different storage options.
