It’s laudable that Microsoft has made the laptop more repairable this year but, that aside, there isn’t much to elevate this laptop above its rivals, all of which offer more power, superior displays and better battery life for the money.

Ultimately, the Surface Laptop 5 still holds its place among premium Windows laptops. With excellent hardware and build quality, the Laptop 5 is an all-around excellent experience. It’s not perfect, and as mentioned above, improvements like slimmer bezels, a 120Hz display, and better battery life could go a long way to improving the overall experience. As always, those who don’t care for a premium hardware experience can find options from other PC manufacturers that meet the same levels of performance for less. It’s easy to argue that the Surface Laptop 5 is too expensive for what it offers, but in terms of quality, you get what you pay for. And finally, there isn’t a good argument for upgrading to the Surface Laptop 5 from a previous model. Aside from the improved CPU, the Surface Laptop 5 is basically identical to the Laptop 4 and Laptop 3 – unless your old Surface Laptop is broken beyond repair and you want to replace it with a new Surface Laptop, there’s no reason to ditch your old PC for the Laptop 5.

I may seem like I had high standards for this review, and I did. This is a flagship laptop from the company that makes Windows, after all. While those resources and ability to optimize for its own OS did show in aspects like the Surface Laptop 5's consistently excellent build quality and performance, it faltered when it came to basic modern necessities like a decent webcam and a contemporary display layout. If you never videoconference or if wasted space around your display doesn't bother you, you're looking at the best Windows laptop you could buy right now. Even if those things do irk a bit, I'd recommend balancing them against the exceptional performance, build, and aesthetics. The Surface Laptop 5 is frustratingly close to being that universal leader among Windows portables that Microsoft wants it to be. But, if Microsoft wants that crown, I hope it updates the components that held this generation back when it comes time to design the Surface Laptop 6.

Microsoft nous ressort la même recette depuis plusieurs années et ça ne change pas avec son Surface Laptop 5. Le seul grand changement se situe au niveau du processeur, puisqu'on a droit à la toute dernière génération d'Intel Core, avec une nouvelle architecture. Dans les faits, cela offre des performances accrues tout en gardant un ordinateur fin, robuste et avec un bel écran (si l'on omet ces épaisses bordures) au format 3:2. Cet ordinateur portable est donc fait pour la productivité, mais si vous n'avez pas forcément besoin de Windows en système d'exploitation, vous devriez peut-être regarder du côté des machines M1/M2 d'Apple. Dans l'autre cas, un Dell XPS 13 ou XPS 15 pourrait tout aussi bien vous convenir, surtout si vous avez besoin de davantage de connectiques. On attend de ce fait déjà un Surface Laptop 6 qui aille plus loin sur l'autonomie et qui revoit sa copie du design, avec des bordures résolument plus fines et l'abandon du port Surface Connect pour un port USB-C Thunderbolt. À noter que le Surface Laptop 4 de l'année dernière avec un processeur AMD Ryzen 5 4860U, 8 Go de RAM et 256 Go de stockage est disponible à 850 euros, ce qui est assez attractif.

The sRGB coverage is 89% and the maximum brightness is high enough for comfortable usage in a non-dimmed room. Still, the panel is PWM-free above 53% of brightness, however, below this value, the pulsations have a very high frequency, which should be undetectable for most people. If you want to open the device, you’ll be shocked by the fact that it’s almost impossible without leaving some scars on the chassis or breaking something. So, pick your configuration carefully.

As for the battery life, the Surface Laptop 5's 47.4Wh battery allegedly lasts up to 17 hours. Of course, like all manufacturer claims, that's quite a stretch. I've mostly gotten around 7.5 hours with the screen at half brightness, which is pretty good for a Windows machine. But your mileage may vary, as it's dependent on how you use your device. All in all, the Surface Laptop 5 is a premium device with a matching price tag that ticks all the right boxes for its business target audience. With that being said, you should consider whether to opt for the previous generation Surface Laptop 4 instead, as it offers 90 per cent of the same experience for a lower price. However, you do lose out on the versatility of the Thunderbolt 4 port and the superior performance of the Intel Alder Lake chip. Moving forward, if we were to recommend further improvements for the lineup in the future, it would be adding more I/O ports and reducing the size of the bezels around the display. Speaking of which, a higher refresh rate screen would be welcomed too.

But the hard part comes when trying to decide between the 13-inch Surface Laptop 5 and something like the XPS 13. For the same $1,000 starting price, Dell's notebook comes with a similar CPU and a larger 512GB SSD instead of just a 256GB drive, but no touchscreen (though you can upgrade to one if you want). That means you have to choose between getting a slightly better value in the XPS 13, or opting for a taller 3:2 touch display with the Surface Laptop 5. So while the Surface Laptop 5 is still a very serviceable laptop, it's a disappointing step forward from Microsoft. This is the company that Windows built, and it would be great to see it take a leading role in designing the ideal Windows 11 laptop. Sadly, the Surface Laptop 5 ain't it.

Malgré une autonomie qui n’est pas exceptionnelles et des bordures d’écran relativement épaisses, le Surface Laptop 5 ne déçoit pas. Les performances sont bonnes, l’écran est ce qu’il est, mais permet de voir tout de même correctement et la luminosité reste à peu près correcte pour un PC de cette catégorie, mais surtout, les finitions sont soignées. En effet, le clavier est agréable malgré sa tendance à s’enfoncer, et le trackpad est l’un des rares modèles sur un PC Windows à fonctionner de manière efficace. On note également la présence d’un revêtement en alcantara, un vrai bonheur. Le PC Surface Laptop 5 est un bon ordinateur pour quiconque souhaite une machine équilibrée et tout en mains. L'élégance des produits Microsoft n'est pas encore celle des produits d'Apple, mais le constructeur américain y tend petit à petit.

Le Surface Laptop 5 est un très bon ultraportable, dans la droite lignée de ses prédécesseurs. Microsoft joue d’ailleurs la carte de la continuité avec ce modèle, ce qui est à la fois la force et la faiblesse de cette machine. Parmi les très bons points, on apprécie la qualité de construction de la machine et son look épuré. Agréable à utiliser, le Surface Laptop 5 répond à l’appel lorsqu’il est sollicité ; que ce soit en termes de performances et d’autonomie, sans en faire trop. Au regard de son tarif premium, on aurait aimé que Microsoft prenne plus de risques. Toujours aussi beau, l’ordinateur montre quelques signes de vieillissement (bordures épaisses, webcam 720p, connectique limitée…). Alors que la concurrence avance, Microsoft semble se reposer sur ses acquis. Heureusement pour le géant américain, ils demeurent très solides.

Tout le marché du PC portable va de l’avant et se perfectionne, mais le Surface Laptop fait pour sa part du surplace depuis trop longtemps pour donner la moindre sensation de mouvement… ou la moindre sensation tout court. Excellent et en même temps très paresseux, l’appareil reste tel qu’on l’a toujours connu, ou presque, sans chercher à se bonifier autrement qu’en troquant chaque année son ancien processeur pour un nouveau. Des progrès à la petite semaine qui n’impressionnent plus grand monde. En 2022, l’appareil reste élégant, voire même statutaire, mais son design commence méchamment à vieillir et sa connectique pauvrette est une nouvelle fois dissuasive. Ses performances progressent joliment, certes, mais sans crever le plafond et son écran, encadré par des bordures obèses, tend tout doucement vers la ringardise. Sans jamais verser dans la décrépitude — n’exagérons rien — le Laptop de Microsoft est un produit prestigieux qui mériterait sans traîner une vraie refonte pour regagner en éclat. Il reste néanmoins une valeur sûre et profite, qui plus est, d’un tarif de départ relativement attractif en dépit d’une légère hausse des prix (+ 50 euros en un an sur le modèle le plus abordable). On ne recommande en revanche pas du tout les configurations haut de gamme de l’appareil. Affichées à plus de 1 900 euros, elles sont bien trop coûteuses pour courtiser qui que ce soit.

Avec la nouvelle mouture de son Laptop, Microsoft le fait évoluer a minima. Son ordinateur est toujours aussi beau, épuré et bien fini... mais son design commence à dater, comme en témoignent les bordures épaisses autour de l'écran. Il conserve aussi son excellent clavier, parmi les meilleurs du monde PC, ainsi qu'un trackpad à l'avenant, confortable et généreux. Le Surface Laptop 5 est un PC très agréable à utiliser, puissant et plutôt autonome... Mais il pèche, comme la plupart des produits Surface, par son tarif. La machine que nous avons testée est affichée au prix de 1 949 euros, un tarif premium pour des prestations qui, certes, sont bonnes, mais égalées par des PC peut-être un peu moins bien finis, mais aussi moins chers.

Overall, this is a nice laptop that is hampered by some design decisions. This machine is largely the same as the Surface 4 Laptop, so if having the latest processor and RAM isn't a concern for you, it's not terribly important to upgrade. Personally, I like my laptop to have I/O, and the two measly ports here aren't going to do it for me.  But the display is great and considerably sizeable; it's large enough to do some serious multitasking. If you're into it, it's also touch-sensitive, which is also becoming table stakes in 2023. The keyboard and trackpad are both awesome and provide a high-quality UI experience, even if the keystrokes are a bit on the short side. Overall, this is the very definition of an iterative update, and Microsoft needs to go back to the drawing board for the Surface Laptop 6 if it wants to move units. For now, the internals are a nice upgrade, but certainly not a mandatory one if you already have a Surface Laptop 4. There's just not enough "new" here to coax you out of thousands of dollars. However, if you're in the market for a new laptop and you need to have the maximum amount of screen real estate, this is the laptop for you. Just make sure to carry a dongle with you, and possibly the device's power cord depending on how long you'll be using it on a given day.

The Microsoft Surface Laptop 5 is an interesting one. On one hand, there's barely anything new here, other than the processor, which makes it hard to get excited about. On the other, it's a small improvement to what was already one of our favourite laptops, which makes it very easy to recommend. It wouldn't have been hard to make this an appealing upgrade - updating the screen, shrinking the bezels and using a better webcam would have done just that. Instead, the only meaningful upgrades are the new processors and the addition of Thunderbolt 4. If you're a Surface Laptop 4 owner, there's no real reason to upgrade, unless you absolutely need Thunderbolt connectivity. But, if you're thinking of buying a Surface Laptop for the first time, this could be a great choice. It's the fastest Surface Laptop to date, it has a fetching additional colourway and it still has all of the features that made us fall in love with its predecessor - superb fit and finish, excellent keyboard and trackpad, a lovely screen and outstanding speakers. We think it's a solid purchase, though savvy shoppers might want to consider the older model instead, which offers most of the same experience at a lower cost.

After all those fairly good points, we still feel that the Surface Laptop 5 is lacking. It's not that we didn't like it, it's more that we sense it could be better. It has no glaring flaws that will make you balk at the price (it's under £1,000), it feels professional, and there isn't really anything that is annoying. Yes, people may want an AMD model, some may find the design tired, and there's that awful webcam and large bezel combo. It most certainly could be better. But, slightly better laptops are considerably more expensive (ThinkPads, MacBooks, MateBooks). What Microsoft has here is a competing product that costs just £833. So it's good value for money, if not particularly special.

The sleek compact aluminium design looks premium and feels sturdy while the hardware inside lends itself well to productivity-based tasks, this is a great choice for busy workdays and evening entertainment, although it isn’t necessarily built for graphics-intensive tasks like videogames. What’s more is that the Microsoft Surface Laptop 5 has decent battery life and a fast charge time, so you’ll be able to pop this in your bag to use out and about without worrying too much about getting caught short. Some people might be looking for a few more ports around the frame like an SD card slot or an HDMI, but even so, I was pleased to see that they have added in the USB-C with Thunderbolt 4 support because it opens up a whole world of opportunity when it comes to hooking it up external monitors and all of your other devices. All in all, while it has its flaws, there isn’t that much bad to say about this PC. It’s a great choice if you’re willing to spend the money on it!

The Surface Laptop 5 is a disappointment. It’s a design I like, and many of the essential elements are solid. The keyboard is great, the port selection has what you need, and the 3:2 display is pleasant to work on. But as a laptop released in 2022 at this price, it’s falling behind. The M1 MacBook Air often sells for hundreds of dollars cheaper, despite being a faster and longer-lasting laptop. Then there are laptops like the Dell XPS 13 or HP Envy x360 13, both of which are cheaper and offer more affordable configuration options. I like the 3:2 touchscreen that the Surface Laptop 5 includes all the way down the stack, but Microsoft’s overpriced storage and memory make it hard to recommend anything beyond the base configuration. Keeping an AMD model in the lineup may have made the Surface Laptop 5 a bit more competitive. But even still, there are a number of reasons the Surface Laptop 5 feels like it’s a few years old — because in many ways, it is.

If I can give any advice to Microsoft, it would be that it is not in a place where it can continue to roll out these iterative updates. I hate to say it, but OEMs like Apple can get away with that because they’ve perfected their craft, so their highly praised products just need a few tweaks. Microsoft, on the other hand, needs to cut the crap and ditch the thick bezels, bury the 720p webcam, and squeeze more performance out of its laptops. Finally, it goes without saying that your successor should be better than your predecessor, but in terms of battery life, performance, video transcoding, display color coverage, that is not the case. Perhaps things will change if Microsoft rolls out an AMD variant. I really, really wanted the Surface Laptop 5 to land on our best 15-inch laptops page, but unfortunately, it will be left out in the cold. Instead of the Surface Laptop 5, we recommend the M2 MacBook Air or the Acer Swift 5. Both offer at least 11 hours of battery life (compared to the Surface Laptop 5’s measly nine hours) and deliver impressive performance.

Cela fait plusieurs années que les Surface Laptop de Microsoft n’évoluent pas et leur âge se fait ressentir sur cette 5e itération. Les bordures de l’écran sont trop épaisses, la connectique bien trop limitée, la webcam toujours limitée au 720p, la réparabilité est franchement mauvaise et l’autonomie est à présent en baisse. Ce PC portable reste efficace pour de la bureautique avec son bel écran au format 3:2 et son agréable clavier, mais vu le prix demandé, Microsoft est mal placé face à la concurrence.

The Microsoft Surface Laptop 5 is a good laptop sold at the wrong price. It’s a bit shocking to see Microsoft ask for an MSRP of nearly $1,300 for a 13.5-inch laptop with just 8GB of RAM, a mid-tier Intel processor, and integrated graphics. Both the Apple MacBook Air M2 and MacBook Pro 13 M2, while priced at $1,500, still blow it out of the water when it comes to processing speed, enough to make spending $200 more worth it. Windows competitors like the Dell XPS 13 also put the Surface Laptop 5 to shame. While the XPS 13 we reviewed was a bit slower than the Laptop 5, it was also less expensive. A similarly priced configuration will have a much more capable Intel Core i7 processor, 32GB of RAM, and a 1TB solid state drive—a more potent combo that still retails for $50 less than the Surface. Microsoft frequently discounts the Surface Laptop 5, which can make it more competitive, but it still tends to underperform on value. It’s a shame because I genuinely like the Surface Laptop 5. It’s an attractive laptop with a good keyboard, responsive touchpad, and decent battery life. As mentioned, I’ve personally used a Surface Laptop for years. When compared to modern peers, though, its modest performance and limited feature set are dealbreakers.

Microsoft has arguably phoned it in with the Surface Laptop 5 this year – all it really did is throw in the latest Intel chips and Thunderbolt 4 and call it a day – but fortunately the start point was good enough to get away with it. Some elements are undeniably dated, such as the thick black bezel around the display and the basic 720p webcam, but with strong performance and an otherwise sleek design the laptop still holds up well. A good spread of ports help, and while I’m no fan of the fiddly Surface Connect socket its appearance will appeal to existing Surface owners with accessories they’re hanging onto. Next year Microsoft will have to make real changes, but in this iteration the Surface Laptop 5 can ride out one more year as an appealing option.

Si vous avez aimé le Surface Laptop 4, vous aimerez le Surface Laptop 5. Les deux appareils sont sensiblement identiques, mais la dernière version embarque la 12eme génération de processeurs Intel et reçoit la certification Evo. Deux tailles d'écran de 13,5 et 15 pouces sont proposées ainsi que plusieurs coloris avec des revêtements métal ou Alcantara. Les versions se déclinent avec diverses configurations allant de 8 à 32 Go de mémoire et de 256 Go à 1 To de stockage. La gamme d'ordinateurs portables Surface rappelle vaguement une ancienne génération de MacBooks... mais pas dans le bon sens. Microsoft s'en tient en effet au même design essentiel depuis des années, en faisant le moins possible pour le mettre à jour. Le Surface Laptop 5 est un bon ordinateur portable, comme il l'a toujours été, mais il n'est pas aussi moderne ou performant que beaucoup de modèles de prix similaire (ou moins cher). Cela saute aux yeux en regardant les bords imposants de l'écran, ce qui date le design. Le Surface Laptop 5 et le Surface Studio 2 Plus semblent avoir été mis à jour en pensant aux acheteurs des entreprises, où l'achat de produits est approuvé pour des configurations spécifiques et où un changement qui peut augmenter le prix est un frein. D'autre part les départements informatiques veulent que les ordinateurs portables qu'ils distribuent soient aussi homogènes que possible pour faciliter l'achat d'accessoires, le support et le déploiement. Pour ces raisons, le passage à un autre fabricant constitue un obstacle plus important que pour un consommateur ordinaire.

Ces cartes devraient être capables de faire tourner tout les jeux d'aujourd'hui, mais la plupart d'entre eux uniquement en détails moyens ou faibles et avec des résolution basses. Les plus vieux jeux ou les jeux moins gourmands restent jouables avec de beaux graphismes.

13.50: Cette diagonale d’écran fait office d’entre deux entre les ultraportables/ultrabooks de petites dimensions et les ordinateurs portables multimédia/bureautiques plus standards. De nos jours, cette taille d’écran est néanmoins devenue rare.
