Xiaomi unveiled a host of new products this week, but the one that caught our eye was the Mi Mix Fold, Xiaomi's long awaited foldable. Instead of the reverse-folding prototype we got a peek of a few years ago, the Mi Mix Fold looks remarkably like the Galaxy Z Fold 2. It packs in Xiaomi's premium camera tech, with a 108mp main camera, and most notably, a "liquid lens" 8MP camera. Xiaomi is claiming this uses a fluid-filled lens to shift between a telephoto and macro shooter. Impressive if true, though we'll want to test it. The Mi Mix Fold is debuting at 9,999 yuan, around $1,500, a good deal cheaper than the folding options from other companies, though you may have trouble finding one in the USA.

Qu’il est rageant de voir ce Mix Fold 2 réservé uniquement au marché chinois ! Avec ce terminal, Xiaomi s’appuie sur les innovations de la concurrence pour l’améliorer sur beaucoup de points. Ici, c’est la partie design qui impressionne, à la fois par la finition du châssis que par le format des écrans, très pratique. Toutefois, la partie photo reste perfectible, en dessous des autres pliants du marché. Ne reste qu’à savoir quels sont les plans de Xiaomi pour ce genre de téléphones à l’international. On sait que la marque inonde le marché de terminaux sur tous les segments de prix en Europe. Toutefois, elle n’a pas encore communiqué ses plans concernant les Fold. Tout reste donc possible pour les prochains modèles. En tout cas, il y aurait largement de la place dans un marché encore naissant, surtout avec son tarif de 1300 euros.

Parce que oui, le Xiaomi Mix Fold 2 est impressionnant dans son exécution. Le smartphone est extrêmement fin, il est léger et ne déformera pas votre poche de pantalon. Les performances et l’autonomie semble être au rendez-vous. Et enfin, si on émet des réserves sur le bloc photo, cela reste un bon bloc photo dans l’absolu. Seul les plus photographes, ne jurant que par les smartphones premium, auront quelque chose à redire au Xiaomi Mix Fold 2. Espérons qu’il arrivera un jour en France.

Eh ben non parce que ce smartphone montre ce que Xiaomi est capable de proposer sur ce segment des smartphones pliables. Une chose est sûre, c'est que Samsung va enfin devoir se bouger les miches si Xiaomi lance un Mix Fold 3 en Europe l'an prochain. La concurrence s'annonce rude. Personnellement, je trouve l'expérience logicielle encore trop brouillonne, elle manque de maturité. Je n'ai pas été transcendé par la qualité photo alors que ça devrait être la moindre des choses avec un smartphone aussi cher. Mais le Xiaomi Mix Fold 2 est le smartphone pliable avec le meilleur form factor et les meilleures performances que j'ai pu tester jusqu'à maintenant. S'il était disponible en France, il aurait certainement sa place dans notre sélection des meilleurs smartphones pliables et des meilleurs smartphones Xiaomi de l'année.

Xiaomi usually offers close to excellent video recording experience on its flagship smartphones, and it's beyond us what happened for this Mix Fold 2. So, the Mix Fold 2 is a great foldable device and a good smartphone. We are sure it will find fans across China as it is a country where sometimes software means more than hardware, and MIUI has the upper hand. It is not the best foldable, that's for sure, but it is the thinnest one. And our verdict is quite simple - if you like it, you buy it as it's a worthy device. If its imperfections bother you - look elsewhere. But if you don't live in China, or nearby, we can't in good conscience recommend gray importing it - not like we did the Ultra models. Foldables break a lot more often than regular phones. And if this Mix Fold 2 does crack, you will end up with one fancy paperweight with nowhere to service it.

With that said, however, there are phone enthusiasts who would import this in a heartbeat. A former colleague at XDA imported one. I know two people in Singapore who have. And I would import this too if Xiaomi hadn’t given me access to a review device. But we are a very niche group: foldable enthusiasts. Even if most of you reading this will not buy this device, it’s still great that the Xiaomi Mix Fold 2 exists because it shows consumers what is possible. Maybe Samsung can get away with its thicker design for another year due to a lack of competition globally.

With an overall score of 130, the Xiaomi Mix Fold 3 delivered a good performance in the DXOMARK Audio tests and showed very noticeable improvements over its predecessor, the Mix Fold 2. The Mix Fold 3 especially shone as a recording device, thanks to a very pleasant timbre and very effective wind noise reduction. Only when recording loud events, such as concerts, did the Xiaomi show some weaknesses. Overall recording results were best with the main camera, but the front camera and memo app were almost on the same level. Playback was not quite on the same high level as the recording results but still decent. Playback quality was very good at high volumes, with very good bass and treble rendition as well as dynamics, but unfortunately the quality dropped at nominal and soft volume levels.

Unfortunately, the Mix Fold 3 does not come with an IP rating for water resistance, unlike the Z Fold 5’s IPX8 rating that means it can be submerged. So there you have it, the Xiaomi Mix Fold 3. A worthy foldable phone to own, packed with features one would want. The biggest thing stopping us from recommending it outright is that the phone is only in sale in China for now, and there are no official plans to bring it to the Malaysian market. What a pity, as it is a great alternative to the competition here.

What’s also apparent to me is that compromises are not as explicit here. The camera system already feels more than competent. My only personal gripe would be the lack of IP rating — something that Xiaomi has not confirmed to us. The Xiaomi Mix Fold 3 is here. It's slightly thinner and lighter than the Mix Fold 2, and gets two new zoom lenses: a 3.2X telephoto and 5X Periscope, both with OIS and Leica lenses. The main camera also got an upgrade to the Sony IMX800 with a f/1.8 aperture. There's also a Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 chip here that's the same overclocked version as seen in Samsung's 2023 flagships.

What’s also apparent to me is that compromises are not as explicit here. The camera system already feels more than competent. My only personal gripe would be the lack of IP rating — something that Xiaomi has not confirmed to us. Sure, the MIUI software build on this specific model is not great, but it’s designed for Chinese audiences, and a global MIUI ROM would undoubtedly iron out some admittedly minor complaints. Xiaomi:

Ces cartes devraient être capables de faire tourner tout les jeux d'aujourd'hui, mais la plupart d'entre eux uniquement en détails moyens ou faibles et avec des résolution basses. Les plus vieux jeux ou les jeux moins gourmands restent jouables avec de beaux graphismes.

Qualcomm Adreno 660:

Qualcomm Adreno 730:

Puce graphique pour smartphones et tablettes intégrée au SoC Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Gen 1. Qualcomm affirme qu'elle est 30 % plus rapide que l'Adreno 660 du SoC Snapdragon 888. Pour Android, elle devrait être l'une des cartes graphiques les plus rapides fin 2021.

Qualcomm Adreno 740:

Puce graphique pour smartphones et tablettes intégrée au SoC Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Gen 2. Qualcomm affirme qu'elle est 25 % plus rapide que l'Adreno 730 du Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 et les premiers benchmarks montrent que le GPU peut battre l'iGPU A16 d'Apple (auparavant le GPU le plus rapide pour les smartphones).

Qualcomm Snapdragon:

SD 888 5G:

SD 8+ Gen 1:

SoC haut de gamme pour smartphones, introduit fin 2021 et fabriqué en 4 nm chez TSMC. Il intègre un "Prime Core" basé sur une architecture ARM Cortex-X2 cadencée jusqu'à 3,2 GHz. Trois autres cœurs de performance sont basés sur l'A710 mais cadencés jusqu'à 2,5 GHz. En outre, quatre cœurs d'économie d'énergie sont intégrés, basés sur l'architecture ARM Cortex-A510 et cadencés jusqu'à 1,8 GHz. En plus des cœurs de processeur, le SoC intègre un modem WiFi 6e, un DSP Hexagon (pour l'accélération de l'IA) et un ISP Spectra. Le contrôleur de mémoire intégré prend en charge la mémoire rapide LPDDR5 jusqu'à 3 200 MHz. La 5G est désormais incluse dans la puce avec le modem Snapdragon X65. Par rapport à la version non plus, le 8+ Gen 1 offre un Prime Core cadencé à 200 MHz de plus et un GPU cadencé à 10% de plus. De plus, elle est désormais produite par TSMC et non plus par Samsung.

SD 8 Gen 2:

SoC haut de gamme pour smartphones qui a été introduit fin 2022 avec un noyau principal rapide basé sur une architecture ARM Cortex-X3 cadencée jusqu'à 3,2 GHz. Deux autres cœurs performants sont basés sur l'A715 et ne prennent également en charge que les applications 64 bits. Les deux autres cœurs A710 prennent également en charge les applications 32 bits, tout comme les cœurs Cortex-A510, qui permettent d'économiser de l'énergie. En plus des cœurs de processeur, le SoC intègre un modem WiFi 7, un DSP Hexagon (pour l'accélération de l'IA) et un ISP Spectra. Le contrôleur de mémoire intégré prend en charge la mémoire rapide LPDDR5x jusqu'à 4 200 MHz. La 5G est incluse dans la puce avec le modem Snapdragon X70.
