The NR series from Sony is a mixed bag. We don’t really expect tremendous performance from a notebook with this type of price tag, but this notebook is sluggish, needs more RAM, and also has more unnecessary software than any notebook we’ve ever reviewed. All these things lead us to one conclusion: this is a notebook for the family, not enthusiasts or business travelers. It’s not for anyone who does anything but surf the Net and email. For those types of basic tasks, however, it’s more than enough and looks good while doing it.

Representing Sony in the budget notebook arena, the VAIO VGN-NR160E may not be as flashy as its more expensive VAIO siblings, but it's attractive nonetheless. You don't get a lot of extras with this system, and performance is merely average, but we love the big keyboard keys and spacious hard drive. The Sony VAIO VGN-NR160E falls somewhere in the middle in terms of performance, but its cool textured styling, decent battery life, and brilliant display make this notebook a pretty good value.

When buying a laptop these days, $800 can carry you a long way. You're guaranteed a dual-core processor, an ample hard drive, and a full version of Windows Vista. The Sony VAIO VGN-NR160 gives you that much for $830 (direct), along with a range of features that'll satisfy many general-purpose users. It's easy on the eyes, as it does a better job with its brown color scheme than, say, Microsoft's brown Zune media player. Still, you'll need to add an extra 1GB of RAM to handle Vista and all the bloatware Sony piles on.
This particular version of the NR160 is called Wenge brown for its color scheme, named after a tropical African timber. Sony added some textures that give it a synthetic, leathery look and feel—a very effective look. The textured surface extends all the way into the keyboard and palm rests area, which adds to the uniformity.

Sony's new VAIO NR160 is a very surprising entry from a company that makes primarily expensive systems. On a whole, they did a very good job with this new system. While the exterior has a bit too much of a plastic feel that isn't as nice as some other budget systems or even Sony's other models, it does offer a solid computing experience for the price. The NR160 is based around the Intel Core 2 Duo T5250 dual core mobile processor. This provides it with a good level of performance without using too much power and is definitely a step up from older Intel or AMD's current mobile processors in terms of performance. It is matched up with a full gigabyte of PC2-5300 DDR2 memory that lets it run the Vista Home Premium operating system alright, but with some slowdown with multiple applications. The storage is one of the real bright spots on the Sony VAIO NR160. Most budget notebooks still feature a fairly small 80GB hard drive.

"Sony" and "budget" are two words you typically don't find in the same sentence, but the company has taken the sub-$900 plunge with its new NR Series and surprised us with very good performance. At $829, the VGN-NR160E/S targets consumers who need Core 2 Duo power on a budget. Sony still has some notable issues with crapware, but there's a lot to like about this notebook. It has everything users need for everyday productivity and light multimedia use and offers plenty of style to boot. The NR Series comes in three colors: Granite, Wenge, and Silk. The 6.2-pound chassis is nicely textured on the lid and keyboard deck and has rounded edges and clean lines. Compared with the 5.4-pound Apple MacBook Pro 15-inch (which the NR resembles, thanks to the white and silver color options), the VGN-NR160E/S seems a little bulky.

However, the Sony VAIO VGN-NR11S has certainly changed this perspective, as it's a great all-round notebook for anyone looking for a mix of style and performance. In every day use, we found the Sony VAIO VGN-NR11S to be a highly pleasing machine to use. While Asus has been re-defining the market with the Eee PC, it's easy to forget it has been possible to get hold of very cheap notebooks (albeit not as small) for quite a while now. Hell, there have even been some free notebook deals floating around and a quick look at our own shopping section shows a large number of notebooks available for less than £300. Of course, these are all very basic machines but spend a little more and you're still looking at a dual-core CPU, while upwards of £500 should offer up some very decent notebooks.

The VAIO VGN-NR240E/W is still one of the more expensive budget notebooks available on the market but it does provide more storage space than the competition and in a very stylish case design. It is too bad that Sony cut a few corners in order to reduce the price otherwise this would definitely be one of the best on the market.

When we made our sweep of back-to-school laptops this summer, we were surprised to see a Sony Vaio among the entry-level models. (Perhaps Sony's declining laptop market share has encouraged the company to compete at the low end of the price scale.) Only last year did we see our first Vaio limbo lower than the $1,000 mark when Sony introduced the Vaio NR line, and now the retail-only Sony Vaio NR430 E/L takes the Vaio down to the lowest end of the laptop price scale. The entry-level Sony Vaio NR430 strikes all the right notes--decent performance, pleasing design, great keyboard and display--to form an excellent 15-inch laptop for students (and home users in general) on tight budgets.

Intel Graphics Media Accelerator (GMA) X3100: L’Intel Graphics Media Accelerator (GMA) X3100 est une carte graphique intégrée sur un chipset Mobile Intel 965GM (pour Merom = architecture Core 2). C’est un successeur de la GMA 950. Les plus intéressant c’est l’ajout d’un pipeline programmable. Selon nos informations elle devra être bien meilleure que la GMA 950.
Seuls les vieux jeux peuvent tourner de façon fluide sur ces ordinateurs (S'ils ne sont pas trop gourmands en ressources). Les coeurs à mémoire partagée de cette catégorie ont l'avantage d'être moins chaud et moins gourmand en énergie. Pour le bureau, internet, l'édition de photos, et le montage vidéo ces cartes graphiques n'ont aucune restrictions.
NVIDIA GeForce 8400M GT: La NVidia GeForce 8400M GT est compatible DirectX 10, elle détrône la GeForce G 7400 et c’est en fait une 8600M GS plus lente. Ses performances sont clairement au dessus de la 7400 on peut jouer à tout les jeux en baissant la résolution Elle est suffisante pour les joueurs occasionnels.

C'est le successeur du Core Duo avec des pipelines 5-20% plus rapides sans consommation supplémentaire. Comme une addition à la conception du core duo là existe un quatrième décodeur, une SSE-unité amplifiée et une unité logique arithmétique additionnelle (ALU). Le core 2 duo pour ordinateurs portables est identique aux processeurs de core 2 duo d'ordinateur de bureau mais les portables fonctionnent avec des tensions inférieures et une vitesse de Frontside. L'exécution des portables également synchronisés est 20-25% inférieure à des ordinateur de bureau en raison de fréquence d’horloge inférieure de Frontside et plus lents de disques durs.
