At just $800, it is hundreds less than much of the competition while also weighing a good deal less. It offers solid performance and excellent storage features as well.

The Portege R835 is truly a standout in the 13.3” screen laptop class, you get so much for the money which explains why this model has been selling like hotcakes. I can’t think of any other 13.3” laptop that uses a metallic body, has 8 hours of battery life, built-in optical drive and Core i5 processor that can be found in the $700 range. It’s not a perfect laptop, I’d like to see improvement in the screen and something done about the keyboard to make it more usable, but you’ll be hard pressed to find something under $1,000 that has the same specs as the R835 so it becomes easier to accept the drawbacks and simply enjoy the features that are truly great.

We liked but didn't love the last Toshiba Portege because it ran a little hot and we experienced some problems with the touchpad. Toshiba has addressed those issues with the Portege R835-P56X. The company also beefed up the graphics performance while maintaining more than 6 hours of battery life--without ballooning the price. The R835 isn't as sexy as the Samsung Series 9 or as fast as the ThinkPad X220, but it costs $720 less than the former and $370 less than the latter (as tested). Although the keyboard could be better, those in the market for Windows-powered ultraportable will find the Portege R835 to be a solid value.

What made the Toshiba R705-P35 so special was that it came with a big battery that its rivals couldn't fit into their starved frames—and the R835-P50X is no different. In fact, its 66WH battery has even more capacity With a little help from the Sandy Bridge architecture's energy efficiencies , and the R835's battery score surpassed the 9-hour mark (9 hours 26 minutes), prompting a double-take. It beat the Toshiba R705-P35 (7:01) by two hours and completely annihilated the Samsung Series 9 (6:04), Lenovo U260 (4:35), Dell V130 (3:02), MacBook Air 13-inch (5:35), and whatever ultraportable you want to throw against it.

Toshiba Portege R835: Less Ultra, More Notebook

When Toshiba released the Portege R700 in 2010, it came out of nowhere. We didn't have ultrabooks on the market, and nobody was expecting a design like that from Toshiba of all companies. The design served them well, and they extended that design language to respectable notebooks like their Tecra R840 and R850 lines.

Previous versions of this laptop have won our coveted Editors' Choice Award, by offering excellent all-around performance in a slim, lightweight 13-inch body, for a lot less than you'd expect. This one-time favorite is still an excellent go-to 13-inch laptop, if you don't need something quite as slim as an ultrabook, and you can get it for the right price.

We've made it clear in other reviews that we're fans of ultrabooks, but the Toshiba Portege R835-P88 is an eye-opener: Almost light enough to forget it's in your briefcase, it delivers ultrabook-beating performance plus the convenience (even if you only use it occasionally) of an onboard optical drive plus the appeal (even if it's mostly due to a hard disk instead of SSD) of a bargain price. At the very least, it's worth keeping our ultraportable category on the books so we can give it an Editors' Choice.

Toshiba critiques

Seuls les vieux jeux peuvent tourner de façon fluide sur ces ordinateurs (S'ils ne sont pas trop gourmands en ressources). Les coeurs à mémoire partagée de cette catégorie ont l'avantage d'être moins chaud et moins gourmand en énergie. Pour le bureau, internet, l'édition de photos, et le montage vidéo ces cartes graphiques n'ont aucune restrictions.

Intel Graphics Media Accelerator (GMA) HD Graphics:

La plupart des jeux pas trop demandants actuels peuvent tourner de façon fluide. soyez prêts à endurer un rendu graphique assez moche à cause de la basse résolution et des détails au minimum. Par ailleurs ces cartes sont suffisantes pour un travail de bureau et le visionnage de vidéos (pas évident pour la vidéo HD).

Intel HD Graphics 3000:

3 GPUs à venir (1er Trimestre 2011) intégrés aux CPU Intel Sandy Bridge (Core ix-2xxx). Les 3000 / 200 correspondent à la puce GT2 avec 12 Execution Units (EUs).

Dual-core Sandy Bridge avec GPU et contrôleur DDR3 intégré. Le CPU est cadencé à 2.3 GHz (Turbo Boost 2.6-2.9 GHz) et le GPU à 650 (1200 MHz Turbo).

2450M: Processeur Dual-core basé sur l'architecture Sandy Bridge avec un GPU et un contrôleur mémoire intégré. Le CPU est cadencé à 2.5 Ghz (Turbo Boost 2.8-3.1 GHz) et le GPU est à 650 Mhz (1300 Mhz Turbo).

Intel Core i3:

2310M:

13.3: Ce format d'affichage peut s'appeler le mini grand format pour petits portables.
L'avantage est que le subnotebook peut être  de petite dimension et peut être porté facilement. de plus Un petit écran a un avantage, il a besoin de peu de courant, ce qui améliore le temps d'exécution de batterie et en conséquence la mobilité. L'inconvénient est que la lecture des textes est épuisante pour les yeux. Les hautes résolutions sont a proscrire.
