Test Alienware x17 R2 : une bête de course qui se paie au prix fort

Remarquablement bien construit et surtout excessivement puissant, il faut être assez tatillon pour trouver des défauts au X17R2 à l'usage; c’est de l’artillerie lourde enchâssée dans un écrin futuriste à l’identité marquée. Son écran capable de débiter 360 images par seconde fait des merveilles en jeu, et son hardware de premier ordre est plus que suffisant pour dévorer n'importe quel jeu AAA tout cru. On se retrouve donc avec un engin qui va droit au but, à savoir la tête de l’ennemi dans un jeu sous haute tension. Malheureusement, avec une facture qui s'approche des 4000 € (3 898 € pour ce modèle précis), il y a aussi de quoi blêmir au moment de passer à la caisse. Un bel effort d'ingénierie, certes, mais dont la pertinence même est remise en question par son tarif astronomique... Difficile de lui mettre moins de 7/10 sur la base de ses performances de premier plan, mais impossible d'aller plus haut à cause du prix.

Malgré une tarification élevée, ce Dell Alienware X17 R2 se montre très performant et agréable pour jouer. Si l’autonomie n’est clairement pas son fort, on retrouve cependant de très grosses performances sur un ordinateur portable et surtout sur notre version, une fluidité à toute épreuve par son bel écran. Globalement, cet ordinateur est une réussite et les quelques petits défauts seront rapidement gommés par les heures de jeu que vous passerez dessus. Seul bémol, son prix, très élevé mais qui est sans doute justifié par la qualité des composants à l’intérieur. Comme à son habitude, Dell fait très bien les choses. Le PC est robuste, solide et il n’y a pas à douter une seconde de la qualité de cet Alienware X17 R2. Ses performances sont là, le tarif va avec, mais pour le prix, vous jouez avec élégance !

This year's R2 update doesn't mess with that winning formula - it's essentially a speed-bump that adopts 12th-gen Intel processors, and the latest Nvidia GPUs. It's not completely perfect - the HD display (1920 x 1080) provided with our review unit is disappointing given the X17's high price tag, even if it does offer a rock-steady 360Hz refresh rate. The limited battery life also means that this is a laptop that's not going to stray too far from the nearest power socket. Even so, the sleek design, strong performance and big, bright display of the X17 make it a tempting option for any serious gamer.

Does the Alder-Lake x17 R2 displace the Asus ROG Strix Scar 17 as our recommendation for the Ultimate Gaming Laptop? It does. The massive range of specification options, the stunning looks and the effortlessly cool and quiet performance make it impossible not to recommend and outweigh the terrible battery life and excessive adherence to the Alienware orthodoxy of putting all the data ports at the back. The cheapest models are best avoided – a Full HD 165Hz panel is a bit too low end for a machine of this class and the RTX 3060 only comes with 6GB of vRAM – so make sure you go for the 360Hz panel with either the RTX 3070 Ti or 3080 Ti GPU. Do that and you’ll have the finest large-screen gaming laptop on the market, albeit at a price.

So you can afford to set expectations sky-high. If you’re a professional gamer needing to travel with your e-sports (or just very wealthy), it could be the tool you need. The huge computing power could potentially be interesting for graphic designers and other creative professionals, but they will miss a more high-resolution and accurate screen. NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3080 Ti Laptop GPU:
Carte graphique haut de gamme pour ordinateur portable basée sur la puce Ampere GA103S. Au moment de son lancement, début 2022, la 3080 Ti est la carte graphique pour ordinateur portable la plus rapide du marché.
Ces cartes graphiques devraient être capables de faire tourner tout les jeux récents (avec quelques exceptions) en haute résolution avec un bon niveau de détail.

Un processeur mobile basé sur Alder-Lake avec 6 cœurs de performance et 8 cœurs efficaces. Les cœurs de performance offrent un hyper threading, ce qui permet de traiter 20 threads. Le processeur fonctionne à des fréquences allant de 1,7 à 4,7 GHz et prend en charge vPro.
