Pour conclure, j’ai été agréablement surpris par ce que nous livre Asus avec la ROG Ally. Je n’ai pas eu de problèmes à faire fonctionner mes jeux même les plus demandants. Les fois que je n’étais pas tout à fait satisfait, j’ai toujours trouvé les bonnes modifications à faire pour rendre mon expérience stable en cherchant en ligne. Outre la performance, j’ai grandement préféré utiliser Windows 11 qui me permet de facilement installer tous mes logiciels gaming PC. Enfin, avec une très bonne prise en main et un look très stylé, c’est une machine facile à recommander.

And I truly wish that chip is in the Ally X. Perhaps the battery life could be extended even further too. Now then, I have a dilemma. Since I am already using an ROG Ally, should I upgrade to the Ally X? Is it even considered an upgrade since the performance is the same, but I get a bunch of quality of life improvements on the Ally X? As for the price, the ROG Ally X is at RM4,299 – which is a whole thousand more than the ROG Ally when it was first announced. Given that the Ally has come down in price, it’s not easy to pick between the Ally and the Ally X. Remember – Ally X has a lot of upgrades over the original Ally, but ultimately – you still get the same level of performance at double the battery life and no more annoying fan noise.

The Asus ROG Ally provides improvements upon the Steam Deck formula in most areas, with the more streamlined nature of Valve’s software being that devices main coup over the Asus. But, it offers a sleeker chassis, a more open operating system as well as faster gaming performance. You will have to fork out around twice the price of the Steam Deck to get this machine though. There’s now key competition at a similar price now too, with the Lenovo Legion Go offering a larger and higher resolution display, as well as the neat trick of detachable controllers. However, the Asus ROG Ally beats it for its first-party software experience, portability and more satisying controls. Performance is impressive given the fact this is a handheld system but, with a typical 10fps improvement on the Steam Deck, it’s not significant enough to be a no-brainer purchase. It’s difficult to hit a high enough frame rate to make the most of the 120Hz refresh rate and some games, such as Returnal, are unplayable even with compromised graphics settings.

Elle conserve ce qui est, à notre avis, son plus gros défaut : l'interface de Windows qui n'est pas très adaptée à une console. Il est aussi un peu dommage que les performances n'aient pas reçu un petit coup de boost, même si elles demeurent suffisantes sur ce form factor. Un écran Oled n'aurait pas été de refus. Ceci étant posé, pour le reste, Asus nous gratifie sans doute de la console-PC la plus aboutie du moment. Son autonomie ridiculise tout simplement la concurrence en allant tutoyer les 4 heures sur des jeux AAA. La nouvelle coque assure une prise en main qui relève de la masterclass et l'écran est bien calibré et fluide.

C’est un choix personnel, mais je préfère Windows 11 pour la facilité d’installer tout ce dont j’ai besoin au niveau des jeux vidéo, même si l’interface est mal optimisée sur console mobile. Somme toute, Asus a apporté les bonnes améliorations au ROG Ally X pour justifier son prix rehaussé et offrir aux utilisateurs une meilleure expérience. La meilleure batterie à elle seule est une avancée majeure, mais les améliorations au stockage et à la mémoire vive sont cruciales aussi. Ça demeure un produit de luxe lorsqu’on considère le prix, mais c’est une super option pour ceux qui veulent jouer leurs jeux PC. Le niveau de performance est raisonnable et surtout on peut la traîner partout ce qui est bien convivial.

Asus semble avoir fait une petite liste de tous les reproches attribués au ROG Ally Z1 Extreme et les a cochés méticuleusement à la conception de ce nouveau modèle. L'exécution est sublime et transforme l'essai qu'était le ROG Ally Z1 Extreme en un PC console ultra solide auquel on devine un bel avenir. Oui, mais... Difficile d'accepter la politique tarifaire choisie par le constructeur ici. Le ROG Ally Z1 Extreme a fini par baisser de prix pour atteindre ceux des Steam Deck OLED, mais même à sa sortie, il ne représentait « que » un investissement de 100 euros de plus par rapport à un Steam Deck au même stockage. Ici, c'est 220 euros de plus.

The one-two punch of performance and battery life is tempting, but not tempting enough to steer me away from a $549 or $649 Steam Deck OLED that will play my legacy library of Steam games more easily, then reliably go to sleep when I want to put it away. The customer support controversy is just one more reason to hesitate. But if you must have Windows or play the latest games on the go, the Ally X is the best Windows handheld yet. I hope it normalizes bigger batteries and VRR screens, and I hope Asus will seriously consider a SteamOS version, too. I hope to test it with Bazzite, an unofficial SteamOS clone, later this year.

It lasts longer than the original, has an easily upgradeable SSD, and more RAM than any Steam Deck. The refined ergonomics also put both the MSI Claw and Lenovo Legion Go in the shade. It’s not perfect: Windows 11 still doesn’t feel entirely happy on a small screen, and the display’s colours and contrast aren’t a match for the Steam Deck OLED – even if the Ally’s higher resolution and refresh rate levels the playing field a bit. The price is a lot spicier than Valve’s handheld, too – it’s now almost in gaming laptop territory. Original ROG Ally shouldn’t be in a rush to upgrade, then, and the Steam Deck OLED remains my top pick – but the gap is narrower than ever.

En signant un partenariat inédit, ASUS et Microsoft sont-elles parvenues à faire trembler Valve et son Steam Deck OLED ? La question ne se pose en réalité pas en ces termes, car à près de 900 euros – contre moins de 680 pour le Steam Deck – la ROG Xbox Ally X ne boxe pas vraiment pas dans la même catégorie, avec des avantages (souvent) et des défauts (parfois). En premier lieu et malgré tout le soin apporté par ASUS sur la dalle LCD de sa console, on a du mal – en 2025 – à se dire qu’on va débourser près de 900 euros pour ne pas avoir d’OLED. Heureusement, à l’usage, ce n’est pas trop préjudiciable, mais en mettant le Steam Deck OLED et la ROG Xbox Ally X l’une à côté de l’autre, la différence reste perceptible. Dans un second temps, reconnaissons que le Ryzen AI Z2 Extreme est bien au-dessus du petit APU utilisé par Valve… une puce qui date de plusieurs années.

On va être honnête, avec la gamme ROG Ally, c’est le chaud et le froid depuis les débuts. Et pourtant, on ne demande que d’aimer totalement la gamme. On se souvient ainsi qu’à la sortie de la toute première ROG Ally, on avait été quelque peu déçu, parce qu’il n’y avait pas de surcouche digne de ce nom, que l’autonomie était faible et qu’au final, l’expérience utilisateur se résumait essentiellement à de la bidouille. L’année suivante, avec la ROG Ally X, Asus avait corrigé bon nombre de défauts dont Armoury Crate SE qui a permis de créer un lien manquant entre le concept d’une console-PC et Windows. Avec la ROG Ally X, Asus avait su revoir sa console et faire les modifications nécessaires pour proposer aux joueurs une vision plus cohérente de la console-PC qu’on était en droit d’attendre d’un grand constructeur PC.

Néanmoins, cette itération aurait gagné à corriger certains de ses défauts de jeunesse, comme sa croix directionnelle peu précise et, surtout, la diagonale de son écran, trop petite pour une bécane de cet acabit... Et à un tel prix. Pour un prochain essai ? Et si le système d'exploitation a encore des choses à ajouter ou optimiser, on ne peut nier que les fondations sont bien là pour adapter toujours plus l'usage pour une exploration à la manette, ce qui est très agréable sur une console portable de la sorte. L'absence de limite de Windows commence doucement, mais sûrement, à s'allier à la facilité de prise en main d'un SteamOS.

It’s starting to step into proper laptop territory, so those without particularly deep pockets will have to think twice about committing this much money for a gaming handheld, which is essentially just a downsized PC with an Xbox controller fused next to it. If you do have the ability to make this monetary commitment though, the ASUS ROG Xbox Ally X currently offers an experience that very few models in the market can match today. There are a lot of glitches, bugs, freezes, unfinished parts and questions about the interface, behind which it has not yet been possible to completely disguise the same Windows 11 under the Xbox logo. But on the other hand, I can’t lie — this is the best PC gaming handheld I’ve ever used, and I’d feel OK dropping $999 on it. Impressive performance paired with a giant battery and power efficiency — all deeply rooted in a stripped down Windows 11 with a slick Xbox UI to navigate and a All I’d say is just think about the library you have and the ways you play. If you’re leaning more towards indie, and you’re OK shaving off some textures in your AAA games, then a cheaper handheld is more than enough. Or if you dabble more in strategy, you can get some great gaming laptops for this price. If you’re back here after thinking that through, you have your answer. Go play to your heart’s content!

Over time, ASUS ROG improved the battery life with the Ally X, but the UI is still very Windows-ish. The newest successor, called the ROG Xbox Ally series (instead of the ROG Ally 2), has finally arrived. Although I only had a week of playing the Xbox Ally X, I can safely say that ASUS ROG has finally brought its 'A' game. In fact, the Xbox Ally X is probably the best PC gaming handheld console we can now get in Malaysia.

Some games do actually benefit pretty significantly, and if you take into account the gains from playing in the Xbox Full Screen Experience, then this machine can be as much as 40% faster than the original ROG Ally X.

The power packed into this portable gamer is pretty impressive. Even on the basic Silent mode, you can happily play Diablo 4 on Ultra graphics settings, while the likes of Tony Hawk also runs well. Boost the ASUS ROG Xbox Ally X to the Performance or Turbo modes and AAA PC titles like Indiana Jones are more than playable, even on higher graphics settings. Even better is the battery life, which ranks among the best of any handheld gaming console I've tested in 2025. The Xbox ROG Ally X supplies three to four hours of non-stop game action on one charge, even on Performance and 25w Ultra modes. That's better than I experienced on the Steam Deck and Nintendo Switch 2 (when playing AAA games). And while you don't have an OLED panel, games still look great on the ASUS ROG Xbox Ally X.

We worried when we first saw it that it was going to be locked to the Xbox infrastructure.

It's still unclear, but the release of the Xbox Ally X feels like the start of a new direction for Microsoft and the Xbox brand. At launch, the Xbox Ally X experience is far from perfect, making its $1,000 USD ($1,300 CAD) price tag difficult to justify. There are just too many features that lack refinement, like the disconnect between the new Xbox menu and Armoury Crate, the fact that some third-party games don't appear in your Xbox library (EA's app, I'm looking at you), and that updates need to be downloaded through several different apps, both in Xbox and desktop mode.

I tried it with the Ally X and it worked well, if not entirely suited for my personal setup. (I don’t yet have a proper desk and primarily use an already full entertainment stand.) Really, it’s a pretty solid investment if you’re someone who games with any portable device, even if you don’t end up going with the Ally X.

While the ROG Xbox Ally X lays the groundwork for a bright Windows 11 gaming handheld future, it makes me wonder where Xbox is headed. Is this the precursor to a Microsoft-made handheld that's actually just the next Xbox? Is the Xbox layer over Windows 11 the start of the Xbox-PC merger that's been rumored for years? It's still unclear, but the release of the Xbox Ally X feels like the start of a new direction for Microsoft and the Xbox brand. At launch, the Xbox Ally X experience is far from perfect, making its $1,000 USD ($1,300 CAD) price tag difficult to justify. There are just too many features that lack refinement, like the disconnect between the new Xbox menu and Armoury Crate, the fact that some third-party games don't appear in your Xbox library (EA's app, I'm looking at you), and that updates need to be downloaded through several different apps, both in Xbox and desktop mode.

Finally, should you buy the ROG Xbox Ally? Well, it depends on you. I’d say the ROG Xbox Ally is a great entry point to the world of handheld PC gaming. It’s a mostly hassle-free experience thanks to the Xbox Full Screen Experience, though we can still change back to the traditional desktop mode to tinker around some more if we want to. If you already own the ROG Ally with the Z1 like I have, then the upgrades are mostly in the grip comfort and quality of life features like having another USB-C port, a larger battery, and also a microSD card reader that wouldn’t burn. At the price of RM2,699, I think it’s a good device – especially if you play some not-so-demanding games like… let’s say metroidvanias like Ender Lilies or Ender Magnolia, or platformers like Yooka-Replayee. It’s definitely a much better and more affordable option to play PC games compared to emulating them on a phone – that’s for sure.

It’s a mostly hassle-free experience thanks to the Xbox Full Screen Experience, though we can still change back to the traditional desktop mode to tinker around some more if we want to. If you already own the ROG Ally with the Z1 like I have, then the upgrades are mostly in the grip comfort and quality of life features like having another USB-C port, a larger battery, and also a microSD card reader that wouldn’t burn. At the price of RM2,699, I think it’s a good device – especially if you play some not-so-demanding games like… let’s say metroidvanias like Ender Lilies or Ender Magnolia, or platformers like Yooka-Replayee. It’s definitely a much better and more affordable option to play PC games compared to emulating them on a phone – that’s for sure.
