There’s nothing quite like it in terms of productivity and gaming performance, even the price of more than $4000 is not that frightening, considering that less productive laptops cost almost the same. ASUS ROG STRIX SCAR 17 SE is a sports car – it draws attention and crushes other laptops when it comes to game performance. And while it’s not suitable for your daily working routine, there’s no lack of fans of this game-only approach. After all, this top-spec laptop, just like the limited edition Lamborghini or Ferrari is already sold out, at least in Ukraine.

Le Asus ROG Strix Scar 17 G733 PY est une machine haut de gamme avec de très bonnes performances. L’un des meilleurs ordinateurs portables pour jouer, cependant, l’autonomie n’est clairement pas son fort. En effet, une telle machine n’est pas faite pour jouer à GTA ou Cyberpunk dans le train, sous peine de ne pas y jouer bien longtemps. Le côté portable est plus pour le balader partout que pour l’utiliser partout sans branchement, surtout en jeu. Nettement moins lourd et imposant que des ordinateurs portables ultra-gamer d'il y a quelques années, le Asus ROG Strix Scar 17 G733 PY se démarque par ses très bonnes performances. Cependant, il faut y mettre le prix, mais c'est la même problématique chez tous les constructeurs d'ordinateurs portables de ce type.

L'ASUS ROG Strix Scar 17 X3D reprend les bases de son prédécesseur en intégrant le redoutable Ryzen 9 7945HX3D. Au-delà même du gain de performances - qui dépendra de vos besoins et attentes -, il permet à ASUS d'entrer dans l'ère du 3D V-Cache sur PC portable. Une entrée par la grande porte, même si tout n'est pas parfait. Cet ASUS ROG Strix Scar 17 X3D oublie quelques éléments qu'on peut attendre sur une machine vendue à ce tarif, comme une dalle IPS plus contrastée et lumineuse, l'identification biométrique ou encore un pavé tactile plus grand et un clavier mécanique. On peut aussi regretter l'absence d'USB 4 ou un design qui n'évolue finalement que très peu. Le plus compréhensible est le bruit et la chauffe que provoquent ces performances, bien au-delà de la plupart de ses concurrents. The upgradability is good – two SODIMMs for up to 64GB of DDR5-4800MHz and two M.2 slots compatible with Gen 4 SSDs. We just wanted to see faster memory here (at least the device has 1Rx8 sticks, which is fine) because the performance of the AMD CPUs can be seriously boosted with snappy RAM. Aside from that, even with not-so-fast memory, the CPU is still a beast. Interestingly, the NVMe gets hot (61°C) while benchmarking but there is no sign of throttling. However, the SSD thermals are normal in standard usage. The keyboard is great – it has a per-key RGB backlight and it’s comfortable for both typing and gaming (and it’s quiet). The touchpad is fast and smooth but it’s a bit noisy for work. The build quality is good with few exceptions here and there. The I/O didn’t offer even a single Thunderbolt 4 / USB4 connector but still, the selection is good with two USB Type-C 3.2 (Gen. 2) ports and a 2.5G LAN. With that out of the way, we can conclude that the ASUS ROG Strix SCAR 17 G733 (2023) is a gaming powerhouse.

Right now, you can get the RTX 4090 / 7945HX Strix Scar 17 for £3,300 (down from the usual price of £3,800) and the RTX 4080 / 7945HX model for £2,900. In the UK, the Strix Scar 17 X3D will have an RRP of £3,799, but I don’t know if it will be available with the cheaper RTX 4080 GPU. There is no doubt that the latest version of AMD’s already impressive Dragon Range Ryzen R9 7945H CPU has moved the goalposts regarding gaming performance. The ROG Strix Scar 17 X3D can run games even faster than MSI’s monstrous Titan GT77 and leaves other RTX 4090 machines we’ve tested, like the Medion Erazer Beast X40, in its dust. The outstanding performance does put into sharp relief the fact that the basic design of the ROG Strix Scar 17 is now getting rather long in the tooth and has been supplanted by the ROG Strix Scar 18 in the Asus ROG hierarchy. I’m sure there are good reasons why Asus has taken this route, but it still leaves the consumer paying top dollar for an old design of car, albeit one with a new engine.

Le voilà, l’ordinateur portable le plus performant de l’année 2023 ! Peu de temps après un Strix Scar 17 G733P qui s’est révélé être un monstre de puissance, Asus nous gratifie d’une version dont la seule et unique nouveauté réside dans la mémoire 3D V-Cache de son nouveau processeur AMD. Cela justifie-t-il la sortie d’un nouveau laptop ? Il y a des chances si l’on en croit le gain apporté par le Ryzen 9 7945HX3D pour les jeux vidéo. Si son apport reste subtil dans la définition native de l’écran de ce laptop, les performances sont malgré tout en hausse avec un gain moyen de l’ordre de 5 à 10 %. Enfin, nous apprécions profiter d’un système de refroidissement qui parvient parfaitement à juguler ce concentré de performances. La machine n’est jamais, ou presque, impacté par un quelconque thermal throttling. En contrepartie, la soufflerie se fait entendre avec pas mal d’intensité !

Compared to the model we reviewed last year, the new ROG Strix SCAR 17 has lost unnecessary elements (such as the UV flashlight and KeyStone), which you won't have to overpay for when buying a flagship laptop. Yes, its price has indeed become lower, although it is still not a cheap desktop replacement. But with an AMD processor, the user will also get perhaps the best performance, and the quality of all other elements remains at a very high level. There are also some minimal differences (there are fewer speakers, but a webcam has appeared), although for the most part they do not play a significant role. So, in the end, ROG Strix SCAR 17 is still one of the best options for gaming and demanding tasks if your budget allows you to spend 159,999 UAH on a new laptop.
