Le Pixel 10 Pro Fold est à n’en pas douter un produit réussi. Google a retenu les leçons des éditions précédentes pour livrer un smartphone pliable mature, équilibré et agréable à utiliser au quotidien. La certification IP68 constitue une première mondiale qui devrait faire réfléchir la concurrence. L’autonomie enfin au niveau permet de tenir sereinement la journée, voire deux jours en utilisation modérée. L’écosystème logiciel profite d’Android dans sa version la plus pure avec 7 ans de support garantis. Et la photo reste un point fort indéniable grâce au savoir-faire de Google en traitement d’image. Cela dit, tout n’est pas parfait. Les performances du processeur Tensor G5 restent en retrait face aux flagships équipés de Snapdragon 8 Elite, ce qui se ressent particulièrement en gaming.

Après un mois avec le Pixel 10 Pro Fold, mon sentiment est mitigé. Ce smartphone pliant est incontestablement excellent : design soigné, écrans sublimes, autonomie enfin digne de ce nom, photo de très haut niveau et IA omniprésente qui simplifie vraiment la vie. La certification IP68 est un vrai plus qui rassure au quotidien. Mais il manque ce petit quelque chose qui ferait de lui un incontournable. Le design n’a (presque) pas bougé par rapport au Pixel 9 Pro Fold, le smartphone reste plus épais et lourd que la concurrence, et le logiciel sous-exploite le potentiel du format pliant. Sans parler du prix stratosphérique qui le réserve à une élite fortunée. Si vous possédez déjà un Pixel 9 Pro Fold, l’upgrade n’est franchement pas indispensable.

Le plus gros reproche qu’on puisse faire à ce nouveau Google Pixel 10 Pro, c’est qu’il ressemble un peu trop à son prédécesseur. On aurait aimé avoir un Pixel 10 Pro ayant subi la même cure d’amincissement que les Samsung Galaxy Z Fold7 ou Honor Magic V5. Après, c’est peut-être le prix à payer pour avoir aujourd’hui le smartphone pliant le plus tout-terrain sur le marché. Sa certification IP68 apporte un vrai plus qu’on n’avait pas eu jusqu’à présent sur un smartphone pliant doté d’un écran pliable et d’une charnière. Comme l’année dernière, avec un écran externe de 6,3 pouces, le Pixel 10 Pro Fold, replié, peut déjà se résumer à un Pixel 10 dans son usage et ses dimensions. Même le bloc photo est similaire en soi, il faut vraiment faire la comparaison avec les Pixel 10 Pro pour avoir une vraie différence. Une fois déplié, c’est une mini tablette carré et c’est tout le confort qui va avec.

Julian Chokkattu over at Wired said it best: "These omissions make this phone feel more like the Pixel 10 Fold, rather than the Pixel 10 Pro Fold." The camera is closer to the Pixel 10 in quality, while the performance is closer to the Pixel 10 without the vapor chamber. It's even missing Pixel 10 Pro features like Pro Res Zoom. To be clear, I still really like the Pixel 10 Pro Fold. And I still find it to be my favorite foldable device, thanks to its great software experience, but at a price this high, it's getting harder and harder to stomach hardware sacrifices. As the first properly dust-resistant foldable it sets a new durability benchmark, slowly bringing the devices up to par with standard slab phones. The inside screen is still necessarily softer than a regular hardened glass to allow it to fold, however, so you must still be careful with it. A fingernail can leave a permanent mark if you press hard enough. The added Qi2 magnetic accessory and charging support is just as good in the Fold as it is in other Pixels. The phone is rapid, has reasonable battery life, runs great software and has the best cutting-edge AI around. The cameras are good for a foldable, too, although can’t match the best normal phones.

And once you have decided to get a foldable phone, Rs 10,000 this way or that may not matter. A more important question is: should you get a foldable phone?

There's nothing really wrong with the Pixel 10 Pro Fold on its merits. Taken on its own, it's basically as good as last year's phone, but with a bigger battery and a stronger chip powering it. And at $1,799, its starting price is $200 cheaper than the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 7. For that price, we would expect cameras more on par with the Pixel 10 Pro, which starts at $999. But $200 is frankly not a huge number when you're talking about phones that cost around $2,000. If you're going to spend that much on a flagship foldable, you might as well go for Samsung's phone just because it's so much thinner and more comfortable to use. I hate to hinge so much of my criticism on the physical form factor, but with foldables, that's kind of a big deal. I think Samsung has the foldable to beat so far this year (rumor has it the company still has a tri-fold coming soon). We'll see how it shapes up in 2026.

Some will disagree, mind, as the Pixel's wider front display will seal the deal for some buyers – as the Samsung's is so much narrower that it's a very different experience. Google's foldable journey has been impressive: the original Fold really didn't hit the mark, while the second-gen model was a total reinvention that blew everyone away. The Pixel 10 Pro Fold hits plenty of high notes, but for its future to be secured it's going to need to slim down further and refine the screen bezel yet more.
