Le Huawei Mate X avait fait sensation lors de sa présentation au MWC de Barcelone. Si quelques craintes s’étaient manifestées sur certains aspects, notre première prise en main rassure. Le smartphone est bien plus solide qu’il n’en a l’air. Sa finesse ne l’empêche pas d’être robuste, et sa prise en main est excellente. Le Mate X brille surtout par son confort d’affichage. Huawei propose aussi bien en « mode smartphone » qu’en « mode tablette » un écran aux bordures extrêmement fines. Reste à voir ce que donneront les améliorations logicielles et les applications optimisées pour ce format.

Royole, avec son Flexpai, avait ouvert la voie au smartphone pliable, mais, il fallait bien l'avouer la réalisation finale ressemblait davantage à celle d'un prototype qu'à celle d'une version finale. Huawei, en revanche, propose un produit abouti avec un design premium et une technologie bluffante. Le fabricant chinois prouve une fois de plus qu'il n'est pas forcément utile d'arriver le premier sur le marché.

It would have been odd selling last year’s model at a high price with older internals and the improvements to the hinge and display are always going to be welcome. Despite being over two years old, the foldable market still feels like it's in an embryonic state, which makes it exciting to keep an eye on but also somewhat frustrating when it comes to actually using these devices. I love a lot of what Huawei did here, especially the design. Having most of the weight of the phone directly on the user's hand is ingenious and it almost makes you question why no one else has done it yet. It's also one of the thinner foldables right now, and the cover display has one of the most natural aspect ratios we've seen on any foldable so far, so using it as a normal phone is actually a viable option.

Le Mate Xs 2 de Huawei est un smartphone frustrant. Le format est différent, agréable à l'utilisation et provoque un effet waouh à chaque sortie. Pour autant, ce smartphone pliant est loin d'être parfait. En mettant de côté l'absence des GMS qui ne facilite pas son usage, l'autonomie faiblarde de l'appareil grève son utilisation quotidienne. Quel dommage quand on regarde le reste de sa prestation, qui compte un superbe écran, d'excellentes performances, malgré l'absence de 5G, ou encore sa polyvalence photographique qui permet de capturer les meilleurs paysages ou selfies. Même si le segment du pliant n'est pas le plus compétitif, l'ombre de Samsung plane un peu trop pour en faire un concurrent viable et tant attendu.

Pour un fan de technologie, le Huawei Mate Xs 2 est vraiment impressionnant. Le concept d'utilisation fonctionne, la qualité de fabrication est premium et même la manipulation d'EMUI sur l'écran pliable sait enthousiasmer. Toutefois, cet enthousiasme est de si courte durée qu'un essai dans un magasin de technologie est presque suffisant. En effet, pendant mon test, je n'ai même pas pu laisser mon iPhone 13 Mini personnel à la maison. En effet, sans les services Google, le Mate Xs 2 est trop limité en termes de fonctionnalités pour que je puisse faire tout ce dont j'ai besoin au quotidien avec. De plus, l'utilisation avec la coque de protection recommandée est compliquée. En tant que flagship à 2000 euros, ce smartphone pliable de Huawei est en outre techniquement dépassé, ce qui se voit au quotidien surtout au niveau de l'appareil photo. La longue liste des précautions à prendre sur la page d'accueil de Huawei me fait en outre douter de la longévité du smartphone.

Encore une fois, si on émet quelques réserves sur le format, surtout sur la protection de l’écran qui servira de dos quand le Huawei Mate XS2 est replié, il faut dire que le nouveau smartphone pliant de Huawei est toujours aussi séduisant. L’effet « Wouah » est immédiat et c’est le genre d’appareils qu’on cherche à avoir pour le tester au quotidien. Maintenant, il reste cher avec son prix de 1999 euros et surtout, il n’est pas annoncé encore pour la France donc à moins de le faire importer, il sera impossible de l’avoir. Et enfin, la dernière chose qu’on n’oublie pas, c’est qu’il ne propose de services Google et clairement, ça sera sans doute son plus grand frein en dehors de la Chine.

Par ailleurs, si l’on veut déplier à nouveau le téléphone pour revenir en format grand écran, il faut passer par un bouton avec imprimé rouge situé sur la partie rigide du téléphone. Le problème, c’est que lorsque l’on tient le téléphone replié, ce bouton se trouve à l’arrière. Pas forcément le plus pratique. Vous l’aurez compris, dans l’ensemble, le Huawei Mate Xs 2 est évidemment une belle prouesse et un véritable bijou à voir et à tenir dans les mains. De là à dire que ce téléphone pourra permettre à sa maison mère de retrouver du souffle sur le marché du smartphone… Avec un tarif à 2000 euros, il va de soi que l’objectif est surtout de montrer son savoir-faire. Pas plus.

By foldable phone standards, the Huawei Mate Xs 2 is priced as expected at R39 999 (RRP). That said, it is still missing a few elements compared to other foldables on the market, such as 5G or the latest silicon. Added to this is an experience that still feels experimental as the unfolded mode is yet to take full advantage of the increase in screen real estate. Whether that requires better software or more developers to build applications to take advantage of the form factor is up for debate, but R40k for an experimental device is not a purchase that many can afford to make. As such, foldables in general could benefit from more iterations, and the Huawei Mate Xs 2 falls in the exact same category. It is not a device for early adopters, but rather risk takers who want to gamble on something different. Like many foldables at the moment, the Huawei Mate Xs 2 still feels too experimental to warrant buying for R40k. Add to this the fact that other foldables are sporting slightly better specifications.

The Mate Xs 2 has undeniably impressive hardware, with a few obvious caveats. The design is sleek and slender, and the outward folding screen is arguably the most exciting foldable form factor around. It’s not the most practical though, and dents and damage to the display feel almost inevitable. Performance is solid even with an older Snapdragon chip, but you’ll have to live without 5G, and put up with surprisingly spotty Bluetooth performance. Capable cameras help make up for that, but you’d expect those given the exorbitant price. As always, it’s the software side where it all breaks down. Things are better than ever before, but at this price it’s almost impossible to justify the compromises involved unless you see this as a secondary device to complement your iOS or Android phone, rather than replace it.

We may have said it a few times, but let's reiterate then - the Mate Xs 2 is the form factor you'd imagine a foldable to be and one that makes the most sense for the most people. There's just the matter of the exposed plastic screen that we have to work our way around and all will be well. But as it stands, we're not there yet, and the Mate's supplied case is hardly an ideal solution, some solution as it may be. Samsung's foldables are water-resistant and this one isn't, so there's that too. You can see that our main concern remains durability. The Mate Xs 2 is not without its strong points. The outie design allows for a nearly creaseless display, which looks and feel much better than what the Samsung Folds have. In tablet form the Mate is a joy to use, and in smartphone mode it can make you forget it's a foldable - the size and weight are just right. And it's a properly capable cameraphone too. Ultimately, if we were asked whether we'd go ahead and spend €2,000 of our own money on a Mate Xs 2 to use as a daily driver, the answer would still be no.

The Huawei Mate Xs 2 is a pretty good folding phone, at least for us in our experience with it in our review of the device for the Philippines. Its outie design gives it dimensions much closer to that of a regular phone while still retaining the flexibility and cool factor of a folding flagship. But that doesn’t hide the fact that the Mate Xs 2 is considerably more expensive than its closest rival while being saddled with the same issues that Huawei’s other flagships have to contend with. It’s better than Samsung’s Galaxy Fold 3 in some respects, but it’s worse too in others. At the end of the day, you’ll really have to think long and hard if the Mate Xs 2 – or really, any folding phone – is worth the money they’re asking for. If you’re willing to ignore some of the niggles we mentioned about the Mate Xs 2, then it’s a pretty good folding phone to be sure.

The Huawei Mate Xs 2 foldable smartphone was announced in April 2022 and the expected price of this phone is $2000 (Rs 1,55,000 in India) approx. As for the performance, the smartphone equips a 5nm – Qualcomm Snapdragon 888 4G chipset that goes up to a 2.84 GHz clocking speed. Skinny enough when closed, paper-thin when open – the Mate Xs 2 is a seriously desirable folding phone. It’s no thicker in a pocket than a traditional brickphone, yet unfurls to double the screen size. While not running the latest, most powerful silicon, it still seems plenty fast, and appears to take a great photo. In hardware terms, it’s a genuinely appealing take on foldable tech. How well an outward-facing foldable will hold up over time remains to be seen, though. It’s definitely something we’d want to know before splashing out the considerable cash Huawei will be asking for the Mate Xs 2. Still, the firm has a great track record with durability testing, and is confident its design is sturdy enough for daily use. There’s also no avoiding the lack of Google support. You have to jump through a few hoops to get the apps you’re familiar with installed, and even then it’s not always smooth sailing. But with Huawei itself now completely in charge of the operating system, updates should arrive sooner, and software support is getting better all the time.

Huawei:

La plupart des jeux pas trop demandants actuels peuvent tourner de façon fluide. soyez prêts à endurer un rendu graphique assez moche à cause de la basse résolution et des détails au minimum. Par ailleurs ces cartes sont suffisantes pour un travail de bureau et le visionnage de vidéos (pas évident pour la vidéo HD).

Ces cartes devraient être capables de faire tourner tout les jeux d'aujourd'hui, mais la plupart d'entre eux uniquement en détails moyens ou faibles et avec des résolution basses. Les plus vieux jeux ou les jeux moins gourmands restent jouables avec de beaux graphismes.
