On ne va pas se voiler la face, le nombre de PC ultra-portables capables de rivaliser avec le Macbook Air d’Apple se comptent sur les doigts d’une main. En dehors de Sony et de ses Vaio Z, aucun constructeur n’est présent sur la niche des portables ultrafins de luxe. Avec sa Série 9, dont ce modèle 13 pouces est le premier représentant, Samsung arrive avec beaucoup d’ambitions et il faut bien l’avouer de solides arguments.

Considering it’s substantially slower and lower in resolution than the Air, I was hoping for an Acer-like price tag (in the realm of $900), but that’s not to be. At $1,650, the Series 9 costs $350 more than the similarly equipped Air. I expect Samsung will start slashing prices to something more appropriate as more sub-$1,000 ultrabook competition arrives on the market, but for now this machine’s performance just can’t back up its hefty outlay.

The 13.3-inch Samsung Series 9 is by far one of the thinnest and sexiest Windows notebooks we have seen in a long time, and equipped with the new Sandy Bridge processors, it could very well be one of the most useful ultra-portables we have seen too. The integrated graphics can’t play PC games very well, but its low-voltage, 1.4GHz Core i5 processor and Intel HD 3000 graphics are capable of rendering movies, web pages with flash and spreadsheets just fine.

If you’re a perfectionist, the keyboard could be better. The touch pad irritated us far too often and the price is undeniably high (though less than the chunkier ThinkPad X1). A system this thin makes compromises but we think Samsung has made all the right ones. If you fancy an Air but don't want OS X, the Series 9 is almost perfect.

Priced at AED 6,999, the Samsung Series 9 certainly comes out a bit on the pricey side. But when you look at the competition, or the MacBook Air 13?, that sells for around the same with a slightly worse CPU but a better battery life and GPU. Is the Series 9 impressive enough to warrant the price, though? The top-spec Air is cheaper and, although it lacks the Samsung's USB 3.0, HDMI and Ethernet ports, it has a higher-resolution screen and a proper SD card reader. The Samsung 900X3A is indeed lovely, but on balance we’d stick with the Mac. However, if you must have Windows 7, this is the closest thing to a MacBook Air you’ll find, and that’s pretty high praise.

It sports a 13.3-inch 1366 x 768 matte display, new Core (2011) i5-2537M processor, 4GB of RAM, a 128GB SSD, 1.5-watt speakers plus subwoofer and Windows 7 Home Premium. Ports are a bit sparse though with only a 2x USB, mini HDMI, headphone and a MicroSD card slot. Battery is non-removable. Chiclet backlit keyboard. Buttonless and large trackpad. Matte aluminum finish lid. Nice one, Samsung. Will be out in February for around $1,600.

Overall, the Samsung Series 9 is a superb notebook. Whatever your buying motivation, the Samsung is worthy of your attention. It's lightweight but powerful, and it's beautiful but practical. We wish all Windows-based PCs were made with this much style, although we appreciate why that's not possible in a market led by low cost machines. If you have the money to spend, this is a capable and desirable machine with impressive processing power and battery life, making it a useful tool. It won't suit every business or every employee, but this has to be one of the best notebooks available.

Samsung réussit un joli tour de force pour une marque qui est - somme toute - une nouvelle venue sur le secteur du PC. Les progrès sont fulgurants et le Série 9 en est la parfaite illustration. Léger, fin, bien fini, dommage que le duralumin n’ait pas subi un traitement anti-traces de doigts et que le bord du clavier chiclet soit composé de plastique noir brillant, car le reste de la machine est irréprochable. Même le chargeur est correctement travaillé, peu encombrant et discret. Quatre étoiles.

I wanted to like this machine. I really wanted to like this machine. Taking the Series 9 out of the retail box, I was immediately attracted to its svelte attractiveness. She is an absolute beauty with the brushed metal and super slim profile. On paper, the specs sounded really good too, including Core i5, 8GB of DDR3, and a 256GB SSD.

The only real problem I can see is with hard disc space after various small deductions for things like Office Starter which is in its own hidden partition, Hibernation area and a Recovery section the space available on the ‘C’ drive is a tad under 93GB and 35GB of that is already used, so you have available only 57.4GB of hard disc space.

Although it's not marketed under Intel's Ultrabook branding, Samsung's new Series 9 900X3B laptop is an Ultrabook in all but name. Thanks to the 1.6GHz Intel Core i5 processor and 4GB of RAM, the 900X3B is more than fast enough for most everyday tasks. The memory can't be upgraded beyond 4GB though. 4GB is enough for now, but it may be a problem in future as software tends to become more memory intensive.

On the face of it this beautifully designed, slim and feather-light laptop is a business laptop extraordinaire, for Windows devotees. Its design, keyboard and Intel i5-powered performance is awesome, though we’re not sure it’s suited to anyone than the short-hop business traveller. The battery life is simply too short, and at this price, the Micro HDMI to VGA converter cable ought to be bundled. As a piece of technology for the home it’s awesome – the ultrabook era starts here.

The new Series 9 is a tantalizing machine, and it fills the niche of the 15-inch Ultrabook. But I know Samsung can do a better job on the keyboard and touchpad. The Samsung Series 9 15-inch is a notebook that straddles multiple categories. It has the screen size of a mainstream laptop but is light and thin enough to be considered an ultraportable. We love its spacious 1600 x 900 display, amazingly fast boot time, and long battery life. Yet, for a $1,499 system, there's a few things that are lacking. The keyboard travel is somewhat shallow for our tastes, and we'd like a visual or tactile cue between the left and right mouse buttons.

So, will this notebook take over from the Lenovo T420s? So far the omens are looking positive: Better display; slim profile and less weight (particularly when the PSU is included); longer battery time and a feeling of durability. Adequate storage is the current bottleneck. I've already done one upgrade and can't wait for 512GB mSATA SSDs to arrive. And the final good news is that although the NP900X4C is wider than the T420s, its slender profile means that it will slip into the same bags.

If I have only one complaint (and I do) about the Series 9, it’s the keyboard. 15mm doesn’t give you much depth to work with, and the shallow travel on these keys makes touch typing difficult. This is a thin and light Windows 8 notebook that boots very quickly and for me anyway cures the problem of fingermarks around the screen by making the whole thing in silver grey rather than the standard shiny black finish. Strangely Samsung only have the 900X3E shown on their site which is probably a more recent model and as stated does have higher specifications but at a higher price.

Samsung: Le groupe Samsung est le plus grand conglomérat sud-coréen et a été fondé en 1938. Le groupe Samsung employait 489 000 personnes en 2014 et est l'une des plus grandes entreprises au monde en termes de chiffre d'affaires et de force de marché. Le nom Samsung signifie "Trois étoiles" en coréen et représente les trois fils du fondateur de l'entreprise. L'entreprise a été fondée en 1938 en tant qu'épicerie. Avec sa filiale Samsung Electronics, fondée en 1969, Samsung s'est lancé très tôt dans la production d'articles électrotechniques, en se concentrant sur l'électronique grand public et l'électroménager. Les autres branches dans lesquelles la grande entreprise est active comprennent la construction mécanique, l'automobile (Hyundai), l'assurance, le commerce de gros, l'immobilier et les loisirs. Samsung fabrique une large gamme de produits électroniques, notamment des smartphones, des téléviseurs, des appareils électroménagers et des semi-conducteurs. La gamme de smartphones Galaxy de la société est l'une des plus populaires au monde. Samsung est également un acteur majeur de l'industrie des semi-conducteurs, fabriquant des puces de mémoire et des processeurs pour de nombreux autres fabricants d'électronique.

Seuls les vieux jeux peuvent tourner de façon fluide sur ces ordinateurs (S'ils ne sont pas trop gourmands en ressources). Les coeurs à mémoire partagée de cette catégorie ont l'avantage d'être moins chaud et moins gourmand en énergie. Pour le bureau, internet, l'édition de photos, et le montage vidéo ces cartes graphiques n'ont aucune restrictions.

Intel HD Graphics 3000:

3 GPUs à venir (1er Trimestre 2011) intégrés aux CPU Intel Sandy Bridge (Core ix-2xxx). Les 3000 / 200 correspondent à la puce GT2 avec 12 Execution Units (EUs).

Intel Graphics Media Accelerator (GMA) HD Graphics:

La plupart des jeux pas trop demandants actuels peuvent tourner de façon fluide. soyez prêts à endurer un rendu graphique assez moche à cause de la basse résolution et des détails au minimum. Par ailleurs ces cartes sont suffisantes pour un travail de bureau et le visionnage de vidéos (pas évident pour la vidéo HD).

Intel HD Graphics 4000:

Carte graphique intégrée aux processeurs de la génération Ivy Bridge. Possède des fréquences différentes selon les processeurs (du ULV au quad core de bureau) et donc des performances différentes.

Intel Core i5:

2537M:

Processeur ULV (Ultra Low Voltage) cadencé entre 1.4 et 2.3 GHz avec Turbo Boost. Avec une HD 3000 cadencée entre 350 et 900 MHz et avec un contrôleur mémoire DDR3-1333.

2467M: Processeur économique en énergie ULV cadencé entre 1.6 et 2.3 GHz avec Turbo Boost. Possède le GPU intégré HD 3000 cadencé à 350 / 1200 MHz avec un contrôleur mémoire DDR3-1333.

3317U:

Processeur Ivy Bridge Dual Core ULV du second trimestre. Il possède une fréquence de 1.7 - 2.6 GHz et un GPU HD 4000 intégré (350 - 1050 MHz). Le TDP est noté à 17 W.

Intel Core i3:

380UM:

Le Core i3-380UM est un CPU ultra low voltage (basse consommation) sans Turbo Boost ni fonctions AES (comparé aux i5 et i7 UM). Grâce à Hyperthreading, 4 processeur sont virtuellement pris en charge. Ave cle GPU intégré (Intel HD Graphics cadencé à 166-500 MHz) et le contrôleur mémoire DDR3-800 dans le package.

2357M: Processeur économique ULV cadencé à 1.3 GHz sans Turbo Boost. Avec une HD 3000 intégrée cadencée à 350 / 950 MHz avec de la mémoire DDR3-1333.

Intel Core i7:

2637M: Processeur économique en énergie ULV cadencé entre 1.7 et 2.8 GHz avec Turbo Boost. Possède le GPU intégré HD 3000 cadencé à 350 / 1200 MHz avec un contrôleur mémoire DDR3-1333.

3517U:

Puissant processeur basé sur Ivy bridge de type ULV du second trimestre 2012. Il possède une fréquence de 1.9 - 3.0 GHz avec un processeur graphique HD 4000 intégré (350 - 1150 MHz). Le TDP fait 17 W.
