EN→FRFor several months we’ve been talking about what a great value Gateway’s P-7811 FX gaming notebook was (reviewed October 2008). So we were anxious to see how the update to that model, the P-7808u FX, holds up. Nevertheless, we can’t help but feel disappointed. While the P-7811 FX hit just the right mix of price and gaming performance for its time, the P-7808u FX is more expensive than its predecessor, yet offers gamers last year’s tech.

EN→FRBy this time Gateway should be looking at a new design, or I’d at least like to see some tweaks, like improved speakers, but you still can’t fault the FX series too much. My biggest problem with the 7808u is that for the considerable price premium you don’t even get a 1920×1200 display, though the graphics can push that much. All told, it’s a nice gaming notebook, but it’s not as good of a pickup as the cheaper FX series models.

The Gateway P-7808u is a very capable desktop replacement, incorporating some high-end hardware for a very reasonable price. But unless you plan to make heavy use of software that specifically engages the quad-core CPU (3D rendering, for example), Gateway's own P-7805u is a better deal because it is essentially the same laptop, except with a 2.26GHz Intel Core 2 Duo CPU, a smaller but faster hard drive, no Bluetooth module, and a price tag that is $650 dollars lower.

Although the design could use a refresh and the sound could be better, the Gateway P-7807u FX is still the best budget gaming rig available; it chewed through everything we threw at it, and we had an exciting time shooting up the baddies without having to worry about lag. Our rig was also a multitasking champ. Priced at $1,399, it’s $88 less than the Sager NP8662, but $250 more than the 15-inch MSI GT627, which offered comparable gaming performance. However, gamers may find it worth those extra dollars, since the P-7807u FX features greater endurance, a sharper display, and a better keyboard.

EN→FRThe Gateway P-7808u FX is indeed an elite notebook in both size and power as one of the few notebooks that can compete with desktop machines in gaming. The Gateway shows great performance in both productivity tasks and most of all handling games that require high graphics and processing power. The display is good and the stereo sound is excellent. The notebook not only has the standard set of ports but also adds HDMI for viewing content on TV and external eSATA drive support for extra expansion. The price is competitive with the small crop of quad core 17-inch notebooks. Aside from some incompatibility issues with 32-bit games, the optical drive/fan buzzing is the only major issue on our Gateway.

At $1,800 (street), the Gateway P-7808u is aggressively priced for a gaming rig, with a mobile Intel quad-core processor and a powerful Nvidia graphics card built into a light 17-inch platform. Though its looks could use a huge splash of imagination, this hard-core gaming laptop is a terrific deal no matter how you look at it. The Gateway P-7808u is the most affordable gaming machine to house a quad-core processor and power 3D graphics.

For $1,799, the Gateway P-7808u FX packs quite the punch with its quad-core processor, top-notch performance, generous storage, and abundance of features. But gamers will balk at its low 1,440x900 resolution, especially compared with the too-good-to-be-true P-7811 FX, which offered a 1,920x1,200 display for just $1,399. The best-performing notebook we’ve seen south of $2,000, Gateway’s P-7808u FX delivers on gaming, multitasking, encoding, and all graphical tasks. We just wish you could get it with a high-resolution display.

NVIDIA GeForce 9800M GTS: Basée sur la 9600 GT de bureau (G94 core), la 9800M GTS est produite ou en 65 nm (512 MB) ou en 55 nm (1024 MB). Les performances de GTS sont comparable à celle de la version GT(grâce à une cadence plus élevée). Le moteur PureVideo HD aide le processeur dans le décodage de vidéo HD.
Ces cartes graphiques de milieu de gamme peuvent faire tourner tout les jeux récents de façon fluide. Les jeux gourmands ne peuvent être joués qu'avec les détails réglés sur moyen.

Q9000: Un CPU quad core assez peu puissant (4 cores) qui n'est pas conçu pour les jeux mais pour les applications de création qui profitent de plusieurs coeurs.

Les DTR (Ordinateur portable de remplacement de fixes) ne peuvent pas être portés facilement, ont besoin beaucoup de courant, mais sur les textes peuvent être lu facilement et les hautes résolutions ne sont pas un problème. Les DTR sont principalement prévus pour une utilisation sur des bureaux, où le poids et le besoin énergétique sont sans importance.
