The Dell 16 Plus (DB16250) is a masterclass in industrial design, a laptop that feels and looks far more premium than its “Plus” designation might suggest. It presents a beautiful, elegant, and highly professional package that prioritizes a stunning visual experience and a refined user interface. However, beneath this gorgeous aluminium shell lie some critical compromises that prospective buyers must be aware of. This is a machine for the user who values aesthetic excellence and a top-tier display for daily productivity, but it comes with significant limitations in terms of future-proofing and eye comfort.

Dell’s 14 Plus excels as a dependable everyday laptop, blending a premium design with modern features, including Copilot+ capabilities and extended battery life from its Lunar Lake processor. Though slightly heavier than some competitors, this doesn’t hinder functionality, and while its display isn’t the brightest, it remains sharp and highly usable. Home users and students will find it a compelling alternative to the Editors' Choice-award-holding Apple MacBook Air 13-Inch and the Asus Zenbook 14 OLED Touch (UM3406), especially if Dell’s steeply discounted price is in effect when you happen to be in the market.

And that’s the tale of the tape. It won’t win any design awards — or any awards, really — but it’ll meet your deadlines without drama. After my time using it as my daily driver, I have no overtly deal-breaking complaints! It’s a strong performer, has the longevity to keep up with my workload on-the-go, and the ergonomics for an enjoyably tactile typing and clicking experience. Don’t let it being the aesthetic equivalent of plain toast deter you — especially given that warranty coverage that comes with it.

I can’t shake the feeling that the Dell 14 Plus is less than the sum of its parts. On paper, a laptop costing £1,049 with a 1TB SSD, 32GB of RAM, a 2.5K display and a full raft of biometrics should be an easy four-star bit of kit. But the bouncy keyboard, unimpressive battery life and drab screen knock some of the shine off. If I were in the market for a good compact laptop I would take a long hard look at the Dell 14 Plus, carefully note that I was getting 32GB of RAM and a 1TB SSD for the same price as some other machines only give you 16GB and 512GB and then I’d buy a Asus Zenbook or a MacBook Air.

Prices for the Dell 14 Plus start at $1,099. My review unit's configuration is slightly more expensive at $1,180. The most powerful option comes with an Intel Core Ultra 9 288V chipset and 32GB of RAM. It is currently on sale at a discounted $1,280. All three come with a 1 TB SSD. Dell's latest machine stands tall as a great affordable option that performs very well amongst a sea of expensive computers. It was such a good experience that I am overlooking the few issues I had with it. I highly recommend it to anyone looking for a next-gen laptop that won't make your wallet cringe at the price tag. For me, it is definitely a highlight of 2025. That said, if you are looking for something else, I recommend the Lenovo Yoga 9i Aura Edition. It has a significantly better display and robust AI features, although it is more expensive.

The laptop version of the Dell 14 Plus is a good buy, especially when you can pick it up for its sale price of $750. Getting a sharp, 2.5K display inside a sturdy, all-metal design with a modern AI processor for that price is a great value. If you want to spend even less, check out the Acer Aspire 14 AI, and if your budget extends past $1,000, then the Asus Zenbook A14 and Microsoft Surface Laptop 7 are two of my favorite Windows laptops. For the two-in-one shoppers reading this and being disappointed in that half of the Dell 14 Plus equation, I've also got recommendations. The Lenovo Yoga 7 14 Gen 9 is my favorite two-in-one overall, and I also like the HP Spectre x360 14, if you have more to spend and want a premium model with an OLED display.

When I set out to review the Dell 14 Plus, I imagined it'd be a fairly standard follow-up to the now-retired Inspiron 14 Plus, but what Dell's produced is actually way better than I was expecting, and offers possibly the best value for its price range of any Windows laptop on the market right now. It's not perfect by any means, but for what you're paying, only the MacBook Air 13 with M4 chip offers a better value for everyday users.

I wanted to like the Dell 14 Plus — I’ve always been a fan of the Inspiron series, but this one fails to stand out, and I swear it doesn’t have anything to do with its new name (maybe). It offers decent performance and solid battery life, but I can’t get over its subpar display, hollow audio, and shallow touchpad. If you want to stay in this price range but need better performance and battery life, I highly recommend checking out the MacBook Air 13-inch M4 or Asus Zenbook S 14 (UX5406). But if you do like what you see out of the Dell 14 Plus, I highly recommend getting the Ultra 7 258V model for increased performance.

The Dell 14 Plus (available at Best Buy) , in general, is a workhorse laptop at a great price. You don't get fancy features like Dell's best trackpad or a build that's quite as light as some other options, but the laptop is reliable and gets the basics right. That said, if you're not tied to a single operating system, the M4 MacBook Air is still our top pick for the best laptop in this price range. It performs better, has a better screen, a thinner build, and a longer battery life. For some, those things aren't enough to switch to macOS, and if that's the case for you, then the Dell 14 Plus is worth considering, whether you go for the laptop or the 2-in-1.

The Dell 14 Plus 2-in-1 is the latest hybrid laptop from the venerable Windows laptop maker, marking its first 2-in-1 since the company's major rebranding earlier this year, which replaced the Dell Inspiron 14 Plus 2-in-1. Fortunately, as with the clamshell Dell 14 Plus, Dell's latest 2-in-1 offers very solid performance at a fantastic price. But given that this is a 2-in-1, typically a form factor where the display takes center stage, the dim, lackluster panel makes this a less attractive option as a 2-in-1 than its clamshell sibling. Starting at $649.99 / £849 / AU$1,498.20, the Dell 14 Plus 2-in-1 does earn its place among the best 2-in-1 laptops this year thanks to its affordable starting price, especially in the US and Australia where the AMD Ryzen AI 300 configurations are available. When these configurations make it to the UK, the prices there ought to be much cheaper to start as well.

If you’re looking for a convertible laptop that is the whole package, the Dell 14 Plus 2-in-1 is not that laptop. If you’ve got the budget to spare, we’d recommend the Asus Vivobook 16 Flip or Lenovo Yoga 9i 2-in-1 Aura Edition instead. The Vivobook is just a bit pricier than the Dell 14 Plus and offers the more powerful Intel Core Ultra 7 258V chipset and a 16-inch OLED display. The Yoga 9i is far pricier but has a gorgeous OLED display that makes it fantastic for your next Netflix binge. However, if you need to stick to a tight budget, the Dell 14 Plus 2-in-1 is affordable and gives you great battery life and solid general performance. The Dell’s affordability does come at the expense of a vibrant display and quality audio, but if you want a 2-in-1 more for web surfing flexibility in tablet mode rather than for content streaming, it’s a decent choice. It’s just hard to recommend a convertible laptop that suffers from a poor display and poor audio.

The Dell 14 Plus 2-in-1 is closer to half of one and half of the other, than the convertible experience it promises. The exterior is stylish and seems hard wearing, but then you open it up and the interior surfaces are plastic. That's likely to cause issues with longevity when folded back into notetaking or presentation modes, which is a shame because the laptop excels in non-standard configurations. Dell has clearly positioned this to undercut the Lenovo Yoga range, which is still where I'd aim my sights on if I wanted a convertible laptop at a reasonable price. But when you can get gems like the Asus Zenbook for less than the starting MSRP of the Dell, you have to ask if the stylus and plastic interior are worth it.

The Dell Plus 14 2-in-1 is a good option for shoppers looking to snag a do-it-all Windows device on a tight budget. It offers versatile design, a nice keyboard, and well-rounded specifications while avoiding a major issue or downside that would take it out of contention. The Plus 14 2-in-1 is a particularly alluring when on sale for $599.99 at Best Buy, which is less than many comparable Windows 2-in-1s and laptops. While I would prefer to see a better display, or a slightly larger touchpad, I enjoyed my time with the 2-in-1.

At $1,700 — the cheapest price you can get the Dell 14 Premium with an OLED display — this laptop costs slightly more than it should. That price is $101 more than Apple’s 14-inch MacBook Pro M4, and both laptops pack 16GB of RAM, a 512GB SSD and a great screen. The MacBook Pro, however, boasts better battery life and a much better design with regular function row keys and a traditional touchpad. The Lenovo Yoga Slim 7x also packs a high-res OLED screen, and the same amount of memory and storage, and it’s $400 less (you can currently get one for $1,300 at Best Buy.) That laptop does carry the quirks of an Arm-based processor, which include lackluster support for legacy devices, as well as only running beta versions of some Adobe applications. It’s the best Windows laptop, but it’s still not without caveats.

The Dell 14 Premium is finally here, and it successfully carries on the Dell XPS heritage it inherits, for better and worse. Performance-wise, it beats out the MacBook Pro 14-inch overall, though video and photography professionals likely won't be impressed enough to make the switch. It's decently priced for a premium laptop, but as its name suggests, it might be too rich for some people who just need a more basic Windows laptop.

The transition from the XPS 14 to the Dell 14 Premium is largely about branding: there are very few changes from the older model, so the XPS 14 might be a better choice if you can find a refurbished model on sale. However, the Dell 14 Premium is a worthy successor to the XPS, retaining all the things we loved about it. It strikes an excellent balance of power, portability, and general computing perfection.

Even with a new and rather uninspired name, it probably shouldn't come as a surprise that the Dell 14 Premium remains one of the best Windows laptops on the market. It has the same sleek design from back when it was still called the XPS 14 but with some refreshed specs and components for 2025. Its chassis strikes a brilliant balance between modern minimalism and usability, while upgrades like its OLED display and discrete graphics give you the ability to build out a versatile but still very portable device. Now I admit that our fully loaded review unit is a bit pricey with a retail price of $2,450, though I'd be remiss to mention that Dell is currently running a sale that knocks $200 off that cost.

The Dell 14 Premium is an excellent laptop. It's expensive, but for the $1,500 price range, it has a lot to offer — especially if you're only interested in a Windows machine. Beyond performance, the laptop has a nice-feeling keyboard, a sleek-and-stylish design, and the potential for solid GPU performance and a stunning OLED display, if you're willing to pay a little more.

What we have here are aesthetics-focused notebooks with reasonable performance but limited upgradeability, which is common for laptops in this weight class. The user experience with both machines is promising, thanks to gorgeous displays, great sound systems, stylish designs, and Intel's Arrow Lake CPU platform. It's only once you start to dig in with these machines that you may start to encounter some frustrations. First and foremost on our list are the capacitive function buttons, which are a divisive design choice. If a user is accustomed to standard markings and tactility for the trackpad area, they might find Dell's invisible trackpad frustrating, too. Neither of these issues ruin the value proposition of these laptops, but they may be frustrating for some.

The Dell 14 Premium lives up to its name as an aesthetic laptop that's committed to its future-forward design. This isn't a laptop that's made for everyone, and that's fine. Dell has successfully improved on elements of its design that don't compromise its vision with the expanded port selection and balance of hardware and cost. As the highest-performing laptop in Dell's base tier of laptops, it's a premium, but accessible, machine that's well-suited toward professionals who need a balanced approach to performance. The luxe physical design makes a statement and is a joy to use, but users will need to be mindful of the hardware's power demands and heat generation.

The new Dell 16 Premium and Dell 14 Premium have a couple of key differences from last year. The most obvious and main difference is that they are no longer called XPS. The other differences come with configuration and performance. These new machines are now running Intel’s latest Arrow Lake processors and NVIDIA’s latest dedicated GPUs. Arrow and Lunar Lake processors have proven to be much better on battery life with the new CPU/GPU/NPU integration, and that continues to be the case here. Normally, I might advise folks to save some money and purchase last year’s models discounted. But with the new performance boosts, you can’t go wrong with buying the Dell 16 Premium or the 14 now. Dell is already running specials to get the ball rolling on these new devices. Yes, you might miss the XPS name, but you’re essentially getting everything but the name here.

The Dell 14 Premium isn’t a large laptop, but its focus is less on portability than on a premium look and feel and strong performance. That comes at the cost of increased weight and disappointing battery life. If you’re looking for a grab-and-go laptop for daily meetings around town or cross-country flights, though, this isn’t the laptop for you. But shoppers who want a 14-inch Windows laptop that can handle many tasks well, with fast connectivity and a great OLED display, will like the 14 Premium.
