Cependant, proposé à 4500 €, il cible ici une clientèle très précise et se positionne comme le “nec plus ultra” de la puissance mobile. À ce prix, on pourra émettre quelques réserves, notamment en ce qui concerne son encombrement et sa qualité de restitution audio qui mérite d'être améliorée.

Nous avons apprécié son look avec ses touches de RGB et son plastique transparent laissant apparaitre ses entrailles du monstre. Par rapport à la version 2020, il n’y pas photo, la machine est plus performante notamment grâce à un combo AMD RYZEN 9 5900HX / NVIDIA RTX 3080 Mobile GPU (130W). Toutes les nouveautés NVIDIA (Ray-tracing, DLSS2.0, WhisperMode 2.0) sont évidemment de la partie afin de sublimer vos jeux préférés en proposant un niveau de détails élevé et un compteur de FPS haut.

All told, the 2021 version of the Strix Scar 17 is a great gaming machine. It's light and compact enough to be portable and has the battery power and specs to back that up to. It's also easy-on-the-eye both in terms of design and the gaming goodness it delivers. There are a few minor niggles - such as no webcam - and one big one - the price - but otherwise we'd happily recommend this gaming machine as a brilliant purchase that's well worth considering.

Just to put context to our testing, the ROG Strix SCAR 17 2021’s GPU is a 130W TGP card. This is outclassed by the 165W TGP of the Lenovo in our comparison. Still, these are very high numbers for a laptop not running a jet engine cooler. In some games, particularly CSGO, the GPU actually relaxes a bit and can dip to around 300FPS but this allows the GPU to operate at a lower clock speed as well and not tax the CPU as much as the maximum draw. That said, this is evident in our battery test where general use sees the ROG Strix SCAR 17 2021 last almost 30 minutes longer versus the Legion. Gaming does match them but that’s a moot point as the best gaming experience would be when plugged in. I can easily recommend this laptop for looks alone but as I mentioned, some configurations are a better value than others and would prove an excellent gaming platform regardless.

It would be great if it could be as slim as a Razer Blade, and your back won’t thank you when lugging this 2.7kg machine around, but heavyweight components need to breathe if you want to extract maximum power from them. This bulk, along with the overdraft-inducing cost, is the price you pay for a laptop designed for one thing: to play games at the fastest possible frame rates. Le ROG Strix Scar 17 est l’un des meilleurs laptops passés entre nos mains ces derniers mois, si l’on se concentre exclusivement sur les performances. La cohabitation entre les derniers processeurs Intel et les cartes graphiques Nvidia offre un cocktail détonant pour le jeu vidéo, l’applicatif et la création de contenus. Une configuration qui se monnaye toutefois plusieurs milliers d’euros, autant dire qu’elle se réserve à un public de joueurs invétérés. Les performances c’est bien, mais Asus en oublierait presque qu’il n’y a pas que ça qui compte. Le Scar 17 n’évolue ainsi pas beaucoup par rapport à l’an passé, on pense notamment à l’absence de biométrie, de webcam, à l’absence d’un revêtement empêchant les traces de doigts, ou encore à un écran de qui on attend de meilleures prestations sur un laptop à ce tarif. En bref, voici de nouveau un laptop qui mise tout sur la performance et il est clair que le Scar 17 ne déçoit pas en jeu. Hélas, sa dissipation thermique semble un poil sous-estimé pour un processeur très gourmand qui chauffe allégrement.

It is also unfortunate the cooling system blows hot air on your mousing hand and takes up space that might be used by the ports and connectors but we can understand the thinking that led us to this point. The one unforgivable sin that Asus has committed with the ROG Strix Scar SE is the removal of the webcam which obviously belongs in the top bezel of the screen.

All in all, I’m glad Asus are once more competing with the heavyweights in the segment of high-performance laptops. They didn’t revive the massive desktop-replacement G703 series of the past, so the Scar 17 SE is not as powerful as it could have been in that kind of chassis. However, it is a balanced option in this mid-sized design at under 3 kilos, and the kind of product that should better cater to the needs of current potential buyers looking for a high-performance notebook, but without requiring two power bricks and a gym membership to lug around when needed. I do look further to find find out more about the pricing of the SE series in comparison to the regular Scar 17, and especially in comparison to the competition. ROGs are usually competitively priced in most markets, so hopefully, the Scar 17 SE won’t diverge away from it. From what we know right now, the laptop should be available in stores around June 2022, so we’ll update once we know more about it. Anyway, that’s about it for this short first look at the 2022 Asus ROG Strix Scar 17 SE series.

Asus: ASUSTeK Computer Inc. est un important fabricant de matériel informatique taïwanais basé à Taipei, fondé en 1989.
