Cependant, entre temps, le prix des PC portables concurrents a bien augmenté. Au point de rendre le tarif très élevé du MacBook Pro 16 M2 Max compétitif. Avec cette machine, vous aurez droit à un écran exceptionnel et des performances de pointes permettant de très largement remplir les besoins de n'importe quel professionnel sur les tâches les plus lourdes. Il pourra même continuer son travail en mobilité loin d'une prise, une vraie force d'Apple face aux solutions AMD/Intel. Un niveau de performance si important que l'on serait tenté de déconseiller la machine à qui n'en aura pas besoin : le MacBook Air M1 ou M2 peut convenir à la majorité des utilisateurs d'un PC portable. Nous avons tout de même quelques menus reproches : le manque de jeux, l'encoche inutile, l'absence de FaceID, peut-être l'absence d'un port USB-A ou encore le clavier qui pourrait mieux tirer parti de la taille de la machine en version 16 pouces. Des broutilles face aux grandes qualités du produit, mais des éléments à avoir en tête sur ce niveau de prix.

If you invested heavily in the previous generation MacBook Pro with its M1 Pro and M1 Max chips, then there’s very little here to entice an upgrade – however, if you’ve been hankering for an upgrade to an ageing machine, or are looking at switching to MacOS, then the MacBook Pro 14-inch (2023) is a stunning machine. The various price rises (prices have stayed in the States, but risen in regions like the UK) are tough to take, especially when the costs for additional memory and storage are so high. This machine, as a result, is for a very specific type of customer – for once, the Pro moniker isn’t simply a marketing term like it is with the AirPods Pro or iPhone 14 Pro. For many, the MacBook Air M2 is more than enough laptop for a lot less money. You don’t need the MacBook Pro for basic 4K video editing or RAW photo editing, as the M2 chip is more than capable of completing those tasks. But, if you need that extra hit of GPU and CPU then that’s where this MacBook Pro comes in. It also offers a far better display, the option of larger sizes, more ports and faster charging. Once again, Apple has made one of the best laptops around.

The M1 and M2 MacBook Pros were expensive and fast machines, and they should still have quite a bit of life in them. But if you are still on an Intel MacBook Pro and didn’t spring for the M1 series last time around, either the M2 Pro or Max MacBook Pro will provide a considerable jump up in performance, thermals, and battery life.

Upgrading to one of these makes doesn’t make much sense if you’re already using an M1 Pro/Max model, unless you must have the faster specs for your workloads. However, if you’re coming from an older laptop, these M2 MacBook Pro 14-inch models are solid options to consider. In that case, though, I’d still keep an eye out for discounts on those earlier M1 Pro configurations while still available, especially if shopping at a lower budget.

Plus puissant, assurément, il est aussi bien plus endurant, et toujours aussi silencieux. Il est surtout impressionnant de le voir aligner les mêmes performances qu’il soit sur secteur ou sur batterie. Rien que pour cela, les Pro nomades pourraient vouloir de lui plutôt que d’un PC, plus puissant et moins cher, peut-être, mais seulement branché à une prise.

Apple n'a rien changé au design de son MacBook Pro 16 M2 Pro, mais c'est pour la bonne cause. Les résultats de nos tests démontrent toujours le savoir-faire du constructeur de Cupertino. Tout y est excellent cette fois encore. Les performances sont logiquement meilleures que sur la génération précédente et l'autonomie se permet d'aller encore plus loin, frôlant les 22 h. Le MacBook Pro 16 M2 Pro trône donc au sommet en 2023 et sera difficilement délogé.

If you invested heavily in the previous generation MacBook Pro with its M1 Pro and M1 Max chips, then there’s very little here to entice an upgrade – however, if you’ve been hankering for an upgrade to an ageing machine, or are looking at switching to MacOS, then the MacBook Pro 14-inch (2023) is a stunning machine. The various price rises (prices have stayed in the States, but risen in regions like the UK) are tough to take, especially when the costs for additional memory and storage are so high. This machine, as a result, is for a very specific type of customer – for once, the Pro moniker isn’t simply a marketing term like it is with the AirPods Pro or iPhone 14 Pro. For many, the MacBook Air M2 is more than enough laptop for a lot less money. You don’t need the MacBook Pro for basic 4K video editing or RAW photo editing, as the M2 chip is more than capable of completing those tasks. But, if you need that extra hit of GPU and CPU then that’s where this MacBook Pro comes in. It also offers a far better display, the option of larger sizes, more ports and faster charging. Once again, Apple has made one of the best laptops around.

But you didn’t came all the way to this article to read my review on the MacBook Pro not expecting its price. And if you really need my opinion, if I have to pick one machine to go with me everywhere in 2023, it definitely will be this MacBook Pro!

The MacBook Pro 16in is a fantastic workstation laptop. The display is bright and colour accurate; the performance levels are superb, regardless of whether you buy the M2 Pro or M2 Max version; and battery life is phenomenal. The one fly in the ointment here is the price. Starting at £2,699, it’s the most expensive laptop Apple has ever made and £300 more expensive than the base M1 Pro 16in MacBook Pro. With prices rising across the board in 2023, however, I suspect that it may appear more reasonable in a few months’ time. As it stands, though, there’s no denying that this is the best laptop of its kind. If you can afford it, there’s absolutely no reason you shouldn’t buy one.

The M1 and M2 MacBook Pros were expensive and fast machines, and they should still have quite a bit of life in them. But if you are still on an Intel MacBook Pro and didn’t spring for the M1 series last time around, either the M2 Pro or Max MacBook Pro will provide a considerable jump up in performance, thermals, and battery life.

Drawing the line, the 2023 M2 MacBook Pros are pretty much the 2021 MacBook Pro designs with updated hardware that delivers 10-25% faster performance between loads, a slight increase in daily-use battery life, and a decrease in battery life in sustained loads. Throw in some updates in connectivity (faster WiFi, HDMI 2.1), and these pretty much sum things up. Sure, the design particularities that bothered me about the 2021 MacBook Pro 14 haven’t changed, such as the notch on the screen, the lack of touch ID or a USB-A port, or the fact that you can’t lean the display back flat to 180 degrees. But everything that I appreciated about this MacBook design hasn’t changed, such as the excellent build quality and inputs, the beautiful display, the solid daily-use performance, and the unmatched efficiency and battery life. Upgrading to one of these makes doesn’t make much sense if you’re already using an M1 Pro/Max model, unless you must have the faster specs for your workloads. However, if you’re coming from an older laptop, these M2 MacBook Pro 14-inch models are solid options to consider. In that case, though, I’d still keep an eye out for discounts on those earlier M1 Pro configurations while still available, especially if shopping at a lower budget.

Although I don't see the 2023 MacBook pro as an instant upgrade for users of the 2021 models – unless you're super keen for HDMI 2.1 and 4K 240Hz monitor support anyway – I do see it as an absolute triumph of a laptop for creatives. The addition of M2 Pro adds a modest performance boost, while a maxed-out M2 Max with 96GB unified memory takes things to another level, which will be appealing to a niche of high-level users. Compared to the competition it's Apple's silicon and architecture that makes this an untouchable performance machine. Just as the name suggests: it's perfect for pros.

I don't want to apply the marketing kiss of death and call it a "mobile workstation," but yeah, that's what it is. And that's the primary way to justify the price, especially for the $3,499 configuration we're testing and the types of applications Apple highlights performance for. (Apple's aiming for the market I tend to mentally classify as "people who create shows for Apple TV Plus, Disney and the like.") There's a much easier case to make for gaming laptops at that price, but sorry, Apple, still no. And given the entry price of $2,499, there's a big hole for recommendations of a big-screen Apple laptop, for people who just want to be able to see more but don't need performance beyond a MacBook Air. Furthermore, that base configuration includes only a 512GB SSD. The base M2 Pro processor with 12 CPU cores (eight performance and four efficiency) and 19 GPU cores delivers fine performance for a lot of photo editing -- I'd probably go higher for, say, medium format work. If you're performing tasks that require the outlay for the laptop, you likely need at least 1TB SSD, and would probably benefit from upping to 32GB RAM. That bumps the price to almost $3,100.

Apple continue de faire évoluer par itération ses MacBook Pro, des machines qui restent toujours devant la mêlée en termes de performance et d'efficacité énergétique face à ses concurrents. Cette année, ce sont encore les entrailles du MacBook Pro qui montrent le plus d'évolution avec une puce M3 encore plus performante dans de nombreux types d'applications (vidéo, 3D, IA), mais aussi en jeu. Sur ce dernier point, c'est encourageant, mais on voit bien qu'Apple a encore du chemin à faire pour convaincre les studios et les joueurs de la puissance d'Apple Sillicon pour le gaming. Pour le reste, l'écran est un peu plus lumineux cette année et l'autonomie reste toujours très confortable pour de longues journées de travail. Et si vous aviez détesté les traces de doigts du MacBook Air M2, celles-ci sont moins présentes sur ce nouveau coloris noir sidéral, c'est déjà ça.

Don’t get me wrong: the MacBook Pro 16 M3 Max exudes everything you want and need in a productivity machine, and then some. And I mean everything. From the machine’s overall aesthetics, design, and chassis, right down to how snappy it is, and the quality-of-life functionalities, this portable powerhouse is the wet dream for the professional, the grizzled videographer, the productivity-driven editor who is enamoured with the MacOS ecosystem. But the problem, my problem at least, is that I am a die-hard PC gamer, which means that even when I’m travelling, there’s currently just no substitute for a Windows-based laptop with a discrete GPU dedicated for that express purpose. And yes, I am well and fully aware that gaming handhelds exist but again, mouse-and-keyboard gamer here.

From the machine’s overall aesthetics, design, and chassis, right down to how snappy it is, and the quality-of-life functionalities, this portable powerhouse is the wet dream for the professional, the grizzled videographer, the productivity-driven editor who is enamoured with the MacOS ecosystem. But the problem, my problem at least, is that I am a die-hard PC gamer, which means that even when I’m travelling, there’s currently just no substitute for a Windows-based laptop with a discrete GPU dedicated for that express purpose. And yes, I am well and fully aware that gaming handhelds exist but again, mouse-and-keyboard gamer here.

It might feel like Apple has been producing its own silicon for a long time now, but it’s really only been a few short years. It’s been less than two years since we got the M1 Ultra and with the new M3 Max, we’ve already surpassed its power in a portable form factor. Yeah, that’s a spoiler, but the M3 Max is remarkably impressive and in almost every metric we at PetaPixel test it outperforms the performance of the M1 Ultra inside of the Mac Studio desktop machine. We were all so taken with the M1 Ultra when it first came out but the ensuing chips have not had that same impact since, well, they didn’t improve on that greatness all that much. But put in context, we really do have to give more than a cursory glance to what Apple has accomplished in the past few years in order to really appreciate it, because it is so very impressive. In this review, I evaluated the new 16-inch M3 Max MacBook Pro with 48GB of memory and 1TB of internal SSD storage.

If you want to see how wild Apple’s prices can get, just look at the 16-inch MacBook Pro I received, which clocks in at $7,199 with the full-powered M3 Max (16-core CPU, 40-core GPU) 128GB of RAM and that 8TB SSD. It's not something an average consumer would buy — but it would definitely be useful for Disney to have a pile of them on-hand to help editors and VFX artists pump out the latest Marvel show. Funny enough, my advice today echoes what I said last year: Don't buy the cheapest model. Beyond that, it's hard to go wrong. The M3 chips are incredibly efficient and powerful. And Apple's MacBook Pro design remains as elegant as ever. Just try to save up for at least 16GB of RAM.

This is possible due to the high and stable CPU clocks during full loads. Interestingly, in this scenario, the fans remain nearly quiet. They can become a bit more audible if the chip temperature hits 100°C which seems possible when the CPU and the GPU are heavily stressed at the same time. It clearly visible that this laptop is tuned for maximum performance and comfort. That comes at a price of higher CPU temps under longer loads. However, the keyboard only gets warm but not hot which is good news. The build quality is outstanding!

Ces cartes graphiques de milieu de gamme peuvent faire tourner tout les jeux récents de façon fluide. Les jeux gourmands ne peuvent être joués qu'avec les détails réglés sur moyen.

Apple M2 Max 38-Core GPU:

Carte graphique intégrée offrant les 38 cœurs conçus par Apple et intégrés dans le SoC Apple M2 Max. La carte graphique n'a pas de mémoire graphique dédiée mais peut utiliser la mémoire unifiée rapide LPDDR5-6400 avec un bus de 512 bits (jusqu'à 400 GBit/s).
