Scintillement / MLI (Modulation de largeur d'impulsion)

Afin d'abaisser la luminosité de l'écran, certains ordinateurs portables font varier très rapidement le rétroéclairage entre éteint et allumé. La fréquence à laquelle le rétroéclairage s'éteint et se rallume est normalement fixée à une valeur qui permet de rendre la variation indétectable à l'œil nu? Si la fréquence est trop basse, certaines personnes peuvent être sujettes à une fatigue oculaire, des maux de tête ou même percevoir les variations.

Le rétroéclairage de l'écran scintille à la fréquence de 1064 Hz (certainement du fait de l'utilisation d'une MDI - Modulation de largeur d'impulsion) à un niveau de luminosité inférieur ou égal à 90 % . Aucun scintillement ne devrait être perceptible au-dessus de cette valeur.

La fréquence de rafraîchissement de 1064 Hz est élevée, la grande majorité des utilisateurs ne devrait pas percevoir de scintillements et être sujette à une fatigue oculaire accrue.

En comparaison, 57 % des appareils testés n'emploient pas MDI pour assombrir leur écran. Nous avons relevé une moyenne à 6272 (minimum : 43 - maximum : 142900) Hz dans le cas où une MDI était active.

Le temps de réponse d'un écran mesure la rapidité à laquelle l'écran est capable de changer une couleur pour une autre. Un temps de réponse élevé se traduit par une image floutée pour les objets en mouvement. Les joueurs bénéficieront de faibles latences d'affichage en jeu.

Le Precision 3520 a certainement de vraies qualités. En premier lieu, l’écran a des couleurs vives, il est lumineux, et il est plaisant à utiliser. L’autonomie est également très bonne pour une station de travail, et devrait être excellente avec la plus grosse batterie de 92 Wh. Les ports sont nombreux. Le châssis et les périphériques d’entrée sont assez bons pour un appareil pro, mais ils ne sont pas parfaits non plus.

Malheureusement, le Precision est à la traîne quand on se penche sur les critères les plus importants pour une station de travail, les performances et les nuisances sonores. La restriction de l’enveloppe thermique à 35 watts est déjà problématique, et Dell aurait dû intégrer un meilleur système de refroidissement (mais il faut admettre que le choix du fabricant est logique, puisqu’il s’agit d’une station de travail à prix contenu). Nous pensons de ce fait qu'un CPU moins puissant aurait été un meilleur choix. Nos stress tests montrent que les performances peuvent beaucoup varier, certainement à cause des réglages logiciels. Malheureusement le ventilateur est lui aussi mal réglé : il se lance même sans sollicitations particulières. Et après les tests, il met du temps à s’arrêter. Le Precision 3520 est une solide station de travail – mais qui mériterait un certain nombre d’améliorations.

Pour résumer, nous pouvons dire que le Precision 3520 a du potentiel. Le portable est plutôt puissant et possède un bon rapport équipement-prix, vu le prix habituellement élevé des stations de travail. Dell devrait malgré tout revoir ses plans, et améliorer la gestion du ventilateur et optimiser les performances. Dès que cela se produira, le 3520 sera certainement digne d’être recommandé.
