You know, when you first see a 17-inch laptop with bezels so thin, you just can’t help but marvel at the engineering miracle you’re seeing. Combine this with the fact that that said display can run at 600 nits of maximum brightness and you can barely notice there are any bezels around it. However, as with the 15-inch model, there is something fundamentally wrong with Dell’s offering. And you have guessed it right – the base version of the device. You just can’t offer a Core i5-10300H model with 8GB of RAM and 256GB of storage (no matter how fast it is) and put it at $1450. And if you want to get the next option, which includes the more powerful Core i7-10750H and the GTX 1650 Ti, you need to spend $600 more (yet you get double the memory and the storage). And things really get out of control if you want the 4K display, which will set you back a total of $2900.

Avec le Dell XPS 17 9700, la marque a clairement voulu créer la station de travail sans compromis. Son large écran de 17 pouces permet de travailler particulièrement confortablement, et c'est appuyé par l'excellent couple processeur et puce graphique intégrée. Les ingénieurs de la marque ont visiblement voulu corriger les petits défauts des générations précédentes pour créer un tout nouveau design en 2020. Le pari est presque réussi.

To sum up the XPS 17 in one word: Big. It’s a big laptop with a big screen, big storage and big performance. Do you need that much in a portable package? Most users won’t, and I would suggest that most people may be better off looking at the XPS 15, which has similar performance in a much more portable package. But if you need to be able to crunch humongous spreadsheets, attack demons with chainsaws and handle pretty much any other computing task you can think of, the XPS 17 can handle it. As long as you have the shoulders big enough to carry it, that is.

80% Dell XPS 17 9710 laptop review: powerful, not portable

To sum up the XPS 17 in one word: Big. It’s a big laptop with a big screen, big storage and big performance. Do you need that much in a portable package? Most users won’t, and I would suggest that most people may be better off looking at the XPS 15, which has similar performance in a much more portable package. But if you need to be able to crunch humongous spreadsheets, attack demons with chainsaws and handle pretty much any other computing task you can think of, the XPS 17 can handle it. As long as you have the shoulders big enough to carry it, that is.

However, for $2,949, I wish the display was more vivid and the battery life leaves something to desire. If you’re on the hunt for longevity with comparable power, the 16-inch MacBook Pro is the way to go (although you might want to hold off until Apple’s next event). If you’re searching for an ultra-lightweight system with endurance, the LG Gram 17 is your laptop. But if you’re looking for the Cadillac of premium laptops, you’ll be hard-pressed to outdo the Dell XPS 17.

Push the feeling that the XPS design team is rather resting on its laurels to one side and the XPS 17 is a truly impressive omni-competent machine that should suit anyone in the creative industries or simply anyone who just wants a good large screen notebook for general use. That screen, of course, is the key feature: large, bright, colourful and pin-sharp it’s hard to beat and it's accompanied by a top-notch sound system to make a truly excellent multi-media machine. The GPU’s low TGP setting is a small drawback but outside of hardcore gaming, it’s not a problem that makes itself felt and a higher power rating would have had an impact on battery life. In short, the new XPS 17 is just as good as the previous version, just more powerful thanks to the new Alder Lake processor.

The answers to these questions will greatly affect your purchase decision. If you want the latter, you would probably steer clear of the XPS 17. Ultimately though, this laptop is made for creators – since photographers are part of this group of people, we think that the aforementioned test is pretty promising. Then comes the display. Dell XPS 17 9720’s IPS panel has a 17-inch diagonal, Full HD resolution, comfortable viewing angles, and a good contrast ratio. It also features a very high maximum brightness, while it covers 100% of the sRGB color gamut. Le Dell XPS 17 9720 occupe ce créneau La configuration de cet essai est affichée à 2919€, avec un Core i7-12700H, 16 Go de RAM, 1 To de SSD, un écran Ultra HD et une carte graphique GeForce RTX 3060 avec 6 Go de mémoire dédiée. Le principal reproche que nous avons à faire sur cette fiche technique concerne la webcam HD 720p 30 images/s qui n’est plus vraiment dans le coup à l’heure du télétravail. Tout du moins en ce qui concerne la configuration testée. Plus cher que la meilleure version du MacBook Pro 16 d’Apple, l’appareil semble figé en 2020 sur plusieurs points. Et si les performances offertes restent généreuses compte tenu de l’encombrement réduit de ce produit, Dell ne parvient pas à exploiter aussi bien qu’on l’aurait aimé l’énorme potentiel du Core i9-13900HX ou celui de son acolyte de circonstances, la RTX 4070, elle aussi sévèrement bridée. Heureusement, il reste possible de passer sur une configuration moins performante sur le papier, mais vraisemblablement mieux exploitée… pour un prix toujours trop élevé, mais tout de même moins effarant.

Dell est un fabricant américain (basé au Texas) de matériel informatique fondé en 1984 et l'un des plus grands fabricants internationaux en termes de parts de marché et de modèles d'ordinateurs portables. Sa gamme de produits comprend des ordinateurs de bureau, des ordinateurs portables, des systèmes de stockage, des moniteurs, des serveurs, des imprimantes, des appareils électroniques grand public et des périphériques. Dell propose des ordinateurs portables adaptés à diverses applications, telles que les ordinateurs portables professionnels, les ordinateurs portables de jeu, les ultra-portables et les postes de travail. Les ordinateurs portables professionnels Dell des séries Latitude et Precision sont une option pour les utilisateurs professionnels et les entreprises.

En 2023, Dell détenait une part de marché d'environ 17 % des ventes mondiales de PC, se classant au troisième rang après Lenovo et HP.

Carte graphique du moyen-haut de gamme basée sur l'architecture Turing avec Raytracing et 1 920 nuanceurs. Sa fréquence est réduite pour offrir une consommation bien inférieure.

NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3060 Laptop GPU:

Carte graphique haut de gamme pour ordinateur portable basée sur la puce Ampere GA106 avec 3072 cœurs. Disponible en différentes versions avec un TDP de 60 à 115 Watt.

NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3050 4GB Laptop GPU:

Carte graphique pour ordinateur portable de jeu de milieu de gamme basée sur la puce Ampere GA107. Elle offre 2048 shaders et est proposée dans différentes variantes TGP (consommation d'énergie) de 35 à 80 Watt avec des vitesses d'horloge et donc des performances différentes.

 

Ces cartes devraient être capables de faire tourner tout les jeux d'aujourd'hui, mais la plupart d'entre eux uniquement en détails moyens ou faibles et avec des résolution basses. Les plus vieux jeux ou les jeux moins gourmands restent jouables avec de beaux graphismes.

Intel UHD Graphics 630:

GPU intégré (GT2) avec 24 UEs que l'on trouve dans certains modèles de CPU Coffee-Lake (mobiles et de bureau). Similaire à l'ancien HD Graphics 630 trouvé dans les CPU Kaby-Lake.

 

Ces cartes graphiques devraient être capables de faire tourner tout les jeux récents (avec quelques exceptions) en haute résolution avec un bon niveau de détail.

Intel Tiger Lake:

i7-11800H:

SoC octa-core haut de gamme basé sur Tiger Lake (série H45) pour les ordinateurs portables de jeu et les stations de travail. Les huit cœurs de l'unité centrale fonctionnent entre 2,3 GHz et 4,6 GHz. Le GPU graphique UHD intégré offre 32 UE jusqu'à 1,45 GHz. La puce est fabriquée sur le processus Intel SuperFin de 10 nm de deuxième génération.

Intel Alder Lake-S:

i7-12700H:
