Les Galaxy S24 et S24+ sont à Samsung ce que les iPhone 15 et 15 Plus sont à Apple : deux smartphones quasiment identiques. Les compagnons de route du S24 Ultra partagent en effet l’intégralité de leurs caractéristiques, à l’exception de l’écran et de la batterie. Nous les avons donc regroupés en un seul test, comme nous l’avions fait pour les Galaxy S23 et S23+. Les Galaxy S24 et S24+ signent le retour d’un nouveau SoC Exynos pour les modèles européens, délaissés l’an dernier à l’avantage du Snapdragon 8 Gen 2. Est-ce une bonne nouvelle ? C'est une excellente question et on vous remercie de l’avoir posée… Afin de nous faire une idée, on a passé les petits frères du Galaxy S24 Ultra au banc d’essais et on a vécu avec ces smartphones pendant plusieurs semaines.

Le Galaxy S24+ est une mise à jour modeste mais bienvenue de la gamme de smartphone haut de gamme de Samsung. Bien qu'il ne fasse pas avancer le marché en termes de caractéristiques techniques, Samsung a apporté d'importantes améliorations en termes de durabilité grâce à une meilleure politique de mise à jour et à une plus grande disponibilité des pièces. L'écran a apporté des améliorations significatives, mais l'autonomie est restée la même malgré une batterie plus grande. Le module photo n'a pratiquement pas changé, mais il propose désormais de nombreuses options d'édition assistées par l'IA. Le S24+ donne l'impression en même temps d'avancer et de reculer, mais le pire est probablement le choix du SoC Exynos 2400 dans le modèle international. On peut lui pardonner son manque de performances, mais pas son efficacité énergétique nettement moins bonne. Curieusement, les améliorations apportées à l'écran et à la batterie du S24+ ont permis de mettre en évidence la meilleure efficacité du Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 du Galaxy S24 Ultra.

Le Samsung Galaxy 24 Plus est un smartphone binaire : d’un côté, il excelle dans trois domaines ; de l’autre, il peine dans trois autres. Il reçoit en effet les félicitations du jury pour son design raffiné et toujours aussi qualitatif, son magnifique écran qui flatte votre rétine ainsi que sa longévité logicielle - 7 ans de MAJ Android - couplée à une interface toujours aussi cool à utiliser. On ne peut pas en dire autant de la photo, des performances et de l’autonomie : les photos capturées avec le Galaxy S24 Plus ne sont pas mauvaises, mais les choix optiques du constructeur coréen génèrent des résultats troublants liés à la profondeur de champ. Niveau performances, l’Exynos 2400 n’est pas catastrophique en soi, mais il chauffe beaucoup en jeu. En réalité, Qualcomm fait mieux avec ses Snapdragon.

La grande nouveauté de la nouvelle génération des Galaxy S24 est bien entendu l’arrivée de Galaxy AI. Une suite de fonctionnalités alimentées par l’intelligence artificielle qui va rendre de fiers services à ses utilisateurs et utilisatrices. Mais, dans des termes purement techniques, que vaut le S24+ ? Vous l’imaginez, le bilan est très positif. Équipé d’un écran à la résolution d’une incroyable finesse, il est adossé à une puce surpuissante ne reculant devant aucune tâche ni aucun jeu, aussi gourmand soit-il. Mais tout n’est pas impeccable. L’autonomie, en l’occurrence, aurait mérité d’être un peu plus généreuse (on dépasse à peine les 10h30 sur une charge). Surtout, les capteurs photo (globalement les mêmes que l’an dernier) gagneraient à être plus sensibles. On constate que le bruit est omniprésent dans nos scénarios de test. Cela ne se remarquera peut-être pas en usage réel mais, en Labo, ça saute aux yeux.

Le Samsung Galaxy S24+ est un très bon smartphone. Muni d'un écran d'excellente facture, un design toujours aussi soigné, et une partie photo maîtrisée (quoique sans surprise), l'appareil était attendu sur le terrain de la performance avec sa puce Exynos. S'il ne souffre pas trop en la matière, il régresse du côté de l'autonomie, sans oublier une charge qui aurait mérité d'être plus rapide. Là où ce smartphone se démarque, c'est du point de vue de l'expérience logicielle boostée à l'IA. On apprécie aussi le choix de s'aligner sur Google avec un support applicatif de sept ans. De quoi conserver son smartphone le plus longtemps possible.

En améliorant la formule déjà très convaincante des S23 et S23+, Samsung parvient à proposer des Galaxy S24 et S24 Plus encore plus aboutis. Écrans améliorés, autonomie supérieure, qualité photo toujours aussi convaincante, les deux smartphones haut de gamme cochent toutes les cases. La puce Exynos 2400 offre des performances suffisantes pour ne pas avoir à rougir face au modèle Ultra et les fonctionnalités IA apportent un « petit plus » qui, sans révolutionner l'expérience, vient différencier les S24 de la concurrence. Mais la meilleure nouvelle sur le plan logiciel est sans doute la garantie de 7 ans de mises à jour qui fait rentrer Samsung dans un cercle très fermé jusqu'alors réservé à Apple et Google. Le S24 se démarque par son format compact très agréable à utiliser à une main et le S24+ par son confort d'affichage et son autonomie. Le tout pour plusieurs centaines d'euros en moins par rapport au S24 Ultra.

Les deux smartphones premium de Samsung embarquent la même excellente fiche technique, ainsi qu'un design aux bordures plates et aux finitions parfaites. L'IA est sur toutes les lèvres, et force est d'admettre que lorsqu'elle est correctement intégrée, c'est une petite révolution. Les S24 et S24+ savent presque tout faire, et s'imposent comme une alternative un peu plus abordable au mastodonte S24 Ultra. Un peu, car leur prix ne descend pas sous la barre des 900€, même avec la configuration la moins gourmande.

Les Galaxy S24 et S24+ partagent de nombreux points communs. Même design, même écran, même processeur, même prédispositions pour l’IA et même bloc photo. À ce stade, et vis à vis de leur prédécesseurs également, seuls trois points les distinguent l’un de l’autre. Leur gabarit tout d’abord puisque le S24+ plaira davantage à ceux qui recherchent un grand écran mais sont un peu effrayés par l’aspect massif (et le poids) du Galaxy S24 Ultra. Le S24 avec son format compact correspond plus aux utilisateurs a l’affut d’un smartphone discret. Leurs performances ensuite. Avec ses 12 Go de RAM, le S24+ dépote un peu plus que son petit frère équipé de 8 Go de RAM, plus contraignant pour le processeur. Et enfin l’autonomie, plus généreuse sur le S24+ et qui permet d’enchaîner deux journées sans s’inquiéter. Mais reste aussi le prix. Hors promo, le ticket d’entrée pour le S24 est fixé à 899 euros (version 8-128 Go). Pour le S24 Plus, il faudra dépenser au minimum 1169 euros (version 12-256 Go). 270 euros séparent donc les deux appareils.

The biggest differences are the lack of a super-high resolution main sensor, no dedicated macro mode, and only three lenses instead of four. Most people don’t really need 200MP so that’s not a huge loss, while the extra telephoto lens is more of a “nice to have” bonus, rather than essential. Unlike past years, where the chipset was consistent across three models, this year’s Galaxy S24 series only sees the Galaxy S24 Ultra getting Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 for its chipset. It’s not the most affordable or pocketable; that’s the base variant. But, let’s not think about it as the meat of this tech sandwich. Let’s think of this phone as an entity all its own. The Galaxy S24+ is a well-built, nice-looking, and powerful phone with a beautiful display, a powerful camera, some stellar speakers, and great battery life. It’s a powerful phone with powerful AI technology in the software and seven years of software updates. I enjoyed every moment I spent with this phone, and continue to enjoy it. Immediately before this phone, I was rocking a foldable phone that I loved to death.

All this while the more expensive Ultra model has seen several camera upgrades in the same period. However, I believe that with further updates, the situation will improve because the manufacturer will certainly not spare resources for investment in AI. The performance of the Exynos 2400 turned out to be quite good, even if it isn’t as good as the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3. Battery life is good, too. The smoothness of One UI is also a sight to behold, and most of the AI features work well.

And Samsung needs to justify the price difference it charges on the much better S24 Ultra.

Here in the UK, this smartphone is powered by Samsung's own Exynos 2400. Battery life only drops faster than the Snapdragon model when you're using the camera a lot or gaming, otherwise you'll get a full day from one charge no worries.

However, I’m inclined to say that there’s better value going for the S24 Plus — this time around at least. Apart from the S24 Ultra’s S Pen, titanium trimmed design, and extra 5x telephone camera with optical zoom, I feel that the S24 Plus makes a strong argument for offering more value. Not only is its processing performance, brightness output, and long lasting battery life almost identical to the Ultra, but the Galaxy AI features are the same from phone to phone. Photo enthusiasts and creative types may prefer the Galaxy S24 Ultra. For me, though, I think the Galaxy S24 Plus excels at the the types of features I want in a flagship phone — and without the excessive price of a more premium model.

I began my review of the S24 and S24+ with low expectations. After all, they weren't very different (visibly) than their predecessors. But as I spent more time with these devices, their minimalist design and slick UX grew on me. Then came the built-in generative AI features, which are more convenient and intuitive than most other third-party bots. There’s even greater potential with the live translation tools, especially with international travel basically back to pre-pandemic levels. The new software aids, combined with subtle design tweaks, help the S24 and S24+ make a more compelling case for upgrading from an S22 or earlier models. Or switching over from other brands, for that matter. Even though OpenAI and Google are already well ahead in the generative AI game, Samsung still deserves some credit for simplifying these functions — at least while it keeps offering Galaxy AI for free until the end of 2025.

Faster charging and a higher screen resolution sweeten the deal a little, but not enough to make the Plus the pick of the bunch.

I think the Galaxy S24+ is the S24 most people should buy. I've thought that about the Plus model of each generation of Samsung's S-series phones for years, but it's truer than ever this time: while the S24 Ultra got a $100 price hike over last year's nearly identical S23 Ultra, the S24+ starts at the same $1,000 the S23+ did. I really don't think most people will care about most of Samsung's new Galaxy AI-branded features. Some of them, like Samsung's various live translation features, will be game-changing for some users. But even flashier AI features like Circle to Search and Instant Slow-mo are hardly breaking new ground in areas average users will appreciate, and by its own admission, Samsung may eventually lock these features behind a paywall.

I've been testing the Samsung S24 Plus and that Galaxy S24 Ultra, to see if Exynos 2400 really is inferior to SD 8 Gen 3 for Genshin Impact action and beyond. We start this Plus vs Ultra battle with a bit of benchmarking, using GeekBench 6 as well as 3D Mark to test the CPU and GPU. But I always prefer real life testing, so I've spent a few days playing with these Samsung phones. The Exynos 2400 holds up well compared with the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3, so don't discount it. It shows great gaming performance, great emulation performance, and also rather good battery life, all things considered. And I have a message for everyone. My job here is to show you how well the Exynos 2400 performs and I did that. Somehow that made headlines around the world and I also helped clear many people’s doubts about this new Exynos chip. I didn’t know those test has such a big impact and I appreciate all of your comments and support. But now, it’s up to Samsung themselves to make sure their own phones with Exynos are treated with respect. They’ve got good hardware, so keep improving.

With a starting price tag of $999, the Galaxy S24 Plus surely is a premium phone, but it seemingly offers more than enough to justify its price tag. Of course, we will reserve our judgement for our final review, but it's highly doubtful that Samsung has taken a misstep.

However, the other phones can now capture 8K video at 30FPS and they have the same ultra-wide and selfie setup. The other big difference is the chipset - in the UK, that Samsung Galaxy S24 Ultra is powered by Qualcomm's Snapdragon 8 Gen 3, while the S24 and Plus are Exynos 2400. It's quite obvious that Galaxy AI is doing the heavy lifting this year, with most of the hardware improvements and software features heavily relying on the on-device AI algorithms. For yet another year, the Galaxy S24 Ultra is the center of attention with the new telephoto camera, titanium side frame, and flat frontal design. However, the changes in the Galaxy S24 and S24+ are more than welcome. The slight bump in the battery capacity and the upgrade to brighter LTPO OLED panels are significant upgrades. In fact, the Galaxy S24+, with its higher resolution LTPO panel and 4,900 mAh battery, put it much closer to the S24 Ultra than ever before. We are curious to see how this plays out because some may prefer the S24+ over the Ultra due to their similar feature set and big price gap. What's more, we are eager to see how the new AI-driven features aid real-life situations and whether Samsung's heavy bet on AI instead of offering more meaningful hardware upgrades is enough to boost sales and spark users' interest.

Samsung’s Plus variants used to be head-scratchers. They were bigger than the base Galaxy, sure, with a larger battery, but similarities elsewhere made the higher price harder to swallow. The Galaxy S24 Plus breaks from that formula with a higher resolution panel, more memory, and faster charging. On first meeting I thought it felt like a proper step-up model for the first time. I’ll need to wait until a full review to see if Samsung’s focus on AI makes any difference in daily use, and whether the return to Exynos silicon has had any negative impact on battery life. Camera image quality will be crucial, too – rivals have quickly caught up on the hardware front and Samsung was content to stick with familiar sensors for 2024 That said, even at this early stage I think those wanting a big-screen handset that looks and feels like a true flagship probably won’t be disappointed.

Samsung Xclipse 940: Puce graphique pour smartphones et tablettes, intégrée dans le SoC Samsung Exynos 2400. Basée sur l'architecture AMD RDNA 3 avec prise en charge du raytracing.

Ces cartes devraient être capables de faire tourner tout les jeux d'aujourd'hui, mais la plupart d'entre eux uniquement en détails moyens ou faibles et avec des résolution basses. Les plus vieux jeux ou les jeux moins gourmands restent jouables avec de beaux graphismes.

Exynos 2400: Le Samsung Exynos 2400 est un SoC haut de gamme pour smartphones et tablettes. Il intègre 10 cœurs ARMv9 dans 4 clusters et se positionne entre le Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 et Gen 3.
