The Apple refresh of the MacBook Air adds some additional performance to the extremely thin ultraportable system, but fails to address some of the design decisions that can impact the functionality. The primary differences between the previous version and the new is faster DDR3 memory and the use of an NVIDIA GeForce 9400M integrated graphics for higher graphics performance. Apple still only supplies a single USB port and a non-swappable battery. And of course the optical drive is external and must be purchased separately. The net result is still a system that you will either love a lot or find lacking.

For some reason we were never able to get hold of a first generation MacBook Air. That's hardly surprising; I'm entirely sure Apple knew full well it was over-priced, under-featured and would nonetheless sell simply on the basis of it's being, first, a new Apple product and, second, an awesome thing to behold. To continue the TrustedReviews tradition of dubious car analogies, the MacBook Air is rather like the Noble M600. Nobody in their right mind would buy one as their sole mode of transport. But you just know that if you could afford one you couldn't help but be very tempted, no matter how ludicrous a purchase it is.

The previous generation MacBook Air was already well clear of the competition in its sleek design and uncompromised speed. With this latest 2009 update, not only has Apple made the Apple MacBook Air (Mid 2009) faster, but it’s over 30% cheaper. It comes with Mac OS X already installed, offering a virus-free and reliable platform for business or home. But for the buyer who can't forsake Microsoft Windows, a licensed copy of Windows 7 could be added to the cost, installed on the Air through Boot Camp, and you’d still have a cost-effective winner relative to other ultraportables notebooks.

Now in its third generation, the MacBook Air hasn’t had the same sort of overhaul as the rest of the MacBook range has had in recent months. The MacBook Air is by no means perfect. Its performance and connectivity options are both more limited than those of conventional but heavier laptops. However, it does perform well when compared to other ultra-portable PCs in the same price bracket. Ultimately, the real clincher for us is the weight, or lack thereof. Instead of leaving it in the office – as we tend to do with our older, heavier White MacBook – undoubtedly, we'd be carrying the MacBook Air around with us and using it, pretty much all of the time.

A performance upgrade and price drop for Apple's specialist notebook. Although Wi-Fi is still its main means of connecting to networks or the internet, you now get a USB Ethernet adaptor in the box, should you need a wired connection. Trading power for portability and connectivity for convenience means the MacBook Air will never be a machine for everyone, but improved specs at a lower price can only be welcomed. A refreshing update for a machine that just oozes style

If what strikes you about the MacBook Air is that it's overpriced and underpowered, it isn't the laptop for you. It's hobbled by having only a single USB port. Its processor is slow and it's locked into 2GB of RAM. There's no FireWire, no optical drive and the only way to connect to an ethernet network is via an included USB adapter. But if the specs that matter most to you are light weight and small size, the MacBook Air is ideal. These new models aren't much faster than their predecessors - the high-end system is actually slower than the previous model - but they're cheaper.

But if the specs that matter most to you are light weight and small size, the MacBook Air is the system for you. These new models aren't much faster than their predecessors (according to Macworld's findings)--in fact, the high-end system is slower than the previous model--but they're cheaper. Unfortunately, we can't give a final score just yet--we're still waiting on PC WorldBench 6 test results--but if the MacBook Air always appealed to you, except for the price tag, it's time to reconsider the Air.

When Steve Jobs first pulled the Apple MacBook Air out of a manila envelope, the laptop Apple touted as the world's thinnest instantly turned media pundits into starry-eyed zealots. At that point, no one knew what features it had, what parts it ran, or even its price—just that, suddenly, the Air was a must-have. Yet the limitations that came to light after the Air's announcement tarnished its luster. After all, it was the only laptop in its class with a single USB port and a non-removable battery, and many features found in other laptops were absent. One only assumed that better things were yet to come. Earlier this year, the Apple MacBook Air (Nvidia 9400M GT) ($1,799 direct) rolled out silently behind the MacBook 13-inch (Aluminum) and the MacBook Pro 15-inch (Dual Graphics). The Apple MacBook Air (Nvidia 9400M GT) is a specimen of unsurpassable beauty, but upgrades of a few parts internally won't be enough to win over converts to Mac.

The updated version of Apple’s strikingly thin and strong ultraportable adds plenty of graphics punch, but its battery life is too short. If you were hesitant to pull the trigger on the original MacBook Air because of the short battery life and limited port selection, Apple hasn’t done much to win you over with the latest version. Road warriors who require good endurance should pass, but the addition of Nvidia’s GeForce 9400M GPU and a larger, faster SSD may prove enticing for those looking for extra performance in a sexy, thin package. If you don’t mind a little more bulk, the latest 13-inch, 4.5-pound MacBook Air is a much better deal, because it offers nearly 5 hours of runtime, easily accessible ports, and the same graphics punch for hundreds of dollars less.

We still have reservations about the MacBook Air. The improved graphics performance does make it feel a lot smoother and more responsive than before. However, it’s still very expensive, and design decisions such as the non-replaceable battery just seem extremely short-sighted. Yet, for all its limitations, the sheer quality of the design shines through. It’s not just the look of the machine that matters – the feel of it is important too. Being able to balance the laptop lightly in the palm of one hand, or to simply snap the lid shut and pick it up the way you would with an ordinary A4 notepad really does make it enormously convenient and comfortable to use - and we did not, as one of our esteemed colleagues suggests, feel like a tit while doing so.

It’s this sort of limitation that cripples the MacBook Air. It may exude class, but the lack of performance and features mean that it struggles to compete, and that’s unlikely to change, even with better graphics on new models released just as we went to press.

If the first MacBook Air was a revolutionary take on the Apple laptop line, this is an evolutionary step - which is exactly what you'd expect from a second-generation release. Aesthetically, the two generations are virtually the same; technologically, the new one offers a speed boost and better storage options at a better price than when the Air debuted. Having said that, if you don't think you need the ultimate in thinness and style - and to my eye, this really is the ultimate in the looks department - do yourself a favour and check out the new MacBook while you're comparison-shopping. Sure, it's chunkier - compared with the Air, just about everything is - and heavier at 4.5lb. But it's faster, offers more storage and is more expandable. Oh, and it's cheaper.

Unlike the first time around, the SSD Air is the one we’d recommend. Yes, it’s considerably more than its HDD counterpart, but its impact on performance is what makes the second-generation MacBook Air such a pleasure to use. If budget is such a consideration as to make the SSD upgrade impossible, we’d steer you instead to the MacBook, which can now compete (if not best) the Air in style. The Air remains Apple’s niche road-warrior option; now those owners can spend more time battling the competition than their notebook. If you fit the profile, you won’t be disappointed.

Is the MacBook Air for you? If you are in the market for an all-round light-weight notebook then the Macbook Air is one of the most portable and visually appealing notebooks on the market. Air Jobs on the rebound

Let's start with the basics. The Air is the best looking MacBook ever, and as far as I'm concerned, one of the best looking notebooks in general. Apple designed it with fashion-minded people in mind and it did a marvelous job. The good looks come at a price, but many people will be more than happy to sacrifice USBs, Ethernet and an optical drive to enjoy Apple's latest toy. So, what are the drawbacks? Lack of ports springs to mind first. There's no optical drive, either, meaning you have to cough up an additional $99 for an external SuperDrive and that hurts. No Ethernet ? Some people won't really mind, but others will.

The public reaction to the MacBook Air has been fascinating. Our original conclusion could probably be boiled down to “it's good for people it's good for, and not for people it's not” – this appeared to be a Rorschach test for readers, since we've received praise from MacBook Air critics and fans alike. Across the internet we've seen similar reactions, with some users embracing the product despite its compromises, and others attacking it as a product with no purpose other than to part fools from their money. Not wishing to sound like a broken record, but how you see the Air has a lot to do with your priorities. For some, the Air's lack of a swappable battery and its underpowered processor make it a terrible value proposition – like paying for black on a MacBook. We take the point, but have to disagree. For us, the value of dropping down a kilo in weight will make all the difference when on the move.

The sealed unit approach means the battery is an integral part of the machine and there's no clear path for upgrading the memory or hard drive. This may work for an MP3 player, which isn't critical to your work, however, for a machine to be used for business, can you really afford to send it back to Apple when it needs updating? In field tests, where we actually took the MacBook Air out and used it until the battery died, we found it lasted for 153 minutes, which is fine for the morning commute, but isn't going to see you through a day's work. When connected to a wireless network, this dropped to 137 minutes to reflect the chipsets further power drain. The Apple MacBook Air is a fantastic looking laptop and a joy to use, but there are simply too many sacrifices.

The Air is a 'love it or loathe it' machine, but don't let the naysayers put you off if it offers the form factor you prefer. Of course it's not going to be the laptop to suit everyone - you can buy cheaper or more capable Macs and PCs - so it's not a must have for the price-conscious buyer or the power-hungry. It's pricey, but with the exception of the tiny, basic Eee, the Air's no more expensive than other slim'n'light laptops. If form-factor is your prime concern, then the Air provides a good computing experience, and if our time with it is anything to go by, its port and optical disc limitations proved no handicap at all. Again, if you think they're going to be, there are plenty of other laptops out there that'll meet your needs instead. Of course, if you want to run Mac OS X on a thin'n'light machine, this is really your only option.

As a portable computer, it excels in many areas that others can’t – such as having a large screen, full-sized keyboard and decent processing power – while staying ultra lightweight. But the exclusion of an optical disc drive, limitations of Remote Disc, and lack of a user-replaceable battery, are shortcomings that will be difficult to ignore for most notebook users. We also find the Air more suited as a secondary device to a desktop machine because it depends so much on having another computer through which to install new applications. Despite that, we feel it represents a step in the right direction towards making notebooks more portable. We hope the next version comes with a built-in optical drive; we don’t think we are ready to give up on that peripheral just yet.

There are always numerous factors to take into consideration when evaluating a laptop, but the problem with the Air is that it introduces several intangible factors that we have never encountered when reviewing PCs. Like other Apple products such as the iPhone, the Air is so beautiful and easy to use that we found ourselves becoming one of those Mac people who fall in “love” with the Apple product. It has undeniable appeal, and even us lifelong PC users were not only impressed with its performance and usability but felt drawn to it like we are to our iPhone. In fact, despite its drawbacks, our final conclusion is that we’d buy one in a heartbeat. We acknowledge its shortcomings, but in our mind they don’t outweigh its many positive attributes.

All-in-all, the Air is a decent Notebook with an incredible design but not one for me. Its a bit lacking in features and performance and for version 2 of Air (does that sound weird?), I would recommend Apple to add a Gigabit Ethernet port, increase the display resolution and lose the glossiness as well as use a dedicated GPU to process graphics. A faster hard drive would be nice too but I'm sure that SSDs will decease in price. Also, CPU speeds keep going up so that wont be an issue. Yes, I might be asking too much but I am a demanding user. And from that prespective, the Air is not for everyone- especially as their primary computer. I feel that its a steup-up from MacBook so if thats what you're eyeing at or want to upgrade from a PowerPC based notebook, then you'll be more than happy with Air. However, if you're a Mac Pro or MacBook Pro type of person, you'll still fall in love at first sight but probably get over the honeymoon within two weeks time and start craving for more.

Apple says that the Macbook Air is a ‘no compromise ultra-portable laptop’. That’s certainly true in some ways: the unit measures less than 2cm thick (0.76in) at its thickest point, and even the somewhat-miffed Sony hasn’t really disputed Apple’s claim that this is the ‘thinnest laptop in the world’. Sony does win on weight as its Vaio TZ weighs just 1.24kg, compared to the Macbook’s 1.36kg. However, the Macbook Air has a bigger screen – 13.3in compared to 11.1in for the Vaio. Ultimately, though, Apple’s engineers know that there’s more to good design than just a spec-sheet full of numbers. The ultra-portable design is impressive, but comes at a cost in terms of limited performance and connectivity.

Apple is pushing the envelope (cough cough) with the MacBook Air ... in various ways that some people will love and others will hate. On one hand they offer a super thin, lightweight design, but on the other they take away ports and give you a permanent battery. This notebook also suffers from some early release driver quirks, but those should hopefully be resolved in the near future. Overall I think this is a promising notebook that should force some other manufacturers to wake up and design some lighter and slimmer full-size notebooks.

Ars reviews the MacBook Air with solid state drive
Source: IT Reviews Anglais EN→FR
The $1,300 question is whether the SSD is worth the extra cash. The answer seems to be no. I experienced only moderate gains in battery life and not very noticeable speed differences. The one major benefit of the SSD model is that it doesn't cause the same types of slowdowns as the HDD model during times of high disk activity, and that's certainly a huge plus. Speedy read times are great, too, but they are balanced out by pokey write times. Still, even if it's more usable, it's hard to justify the huge price difference for the SSD model. If you've got an extra $1,300 to blow and, for some reason, haven't just bought a second computer with it, perhaps the SSD model is for you. For anyone else looking to buy an Air, the HDD model appears to provide the most bang for the buck.

The story of the MacBook Air is a story about compromise, the decision about whether the MacBook Air is a product worth having can be answered by one question: How much are you willing to compromise? Judged merely on the cold technological specifications, the MacBook Air can't measure up to Apple's other laptops. For those to whom the tech specs matter above all else, the MacBook Air can't be seen as much more than an overpriced, underpowered toy. But there will be those who, small drive and slow processor be damned, will adopt the MacBook Air as their primary laptop - simply because they want that laptop to be as small as possible. For those who factor size, weight, and — yes, we'll admit it — style into the equation, the MacBook Air begins to make more sense.

MacBook Air First Thoughts Review
Source: Notebookreview.com Anglais EN→FR
As the old saying goes, "you never get a second chance to make a good first impression." Somehow, I don't think everyone in Cupertino was thinking about this famous phrase when they developed the MacBook Air. While the Apple MacBook Air is an impressive design with some innovative features, the number of sacrifices that had to be made in order to create this ultra-thin notebook severely limits this laptop. The lack of ports, low-capacity slow hard drive, and slow overall performance make the MacBook Air the weakest performing MacBook we've seen in the last few years. On the other hand, the MacBook Air is the sexiest looking MacBook we've ever seen. Sure, you can fit the MacBook Air in a manila envelope ... but most consumers won't be impressed if the $1,800 laptop that comes out of the envelope isn't very powerful. Stay tuned for our full review of the MacBook Air in a few days.

But that’s reason talking. Our visceral reaction to the MacBook Air is that it’s a notebook we’d want to carry around everywhere. Road warriors who demand long battery life or a better selection of ports should pass, but this work of art is worth considering for corridor warriors who attend lots of meetings, as well as for commuters who do a fair amount of work while traveling to and from the office. You get an easy-to-use, secure, and fun operating system wrapped in the sexiest, thinnest package money can buy.

Apple's new laptop, the MacBook Air, may not be the true ultraportable that many had hoped for, but it still easily breaks new ground for small laptops. Mimicking the 13-inch silhouette of the current MacBook line, it's only 0.76 inch thick at its thickest, and Apple calls it the "world's thinnest notebook. The design is revolutionary, but Apple's MacBook Air will appeal to a smaller, more specialized audience than the standard MacBook, thanks to a stripped-down set of connections and features.

The MacBook Air has arrived, a third MacBook model that brings incredibly small size to Apple's laptop line at a premium price. After getting some hands-on time with the MacBook Air at Macworld Expo, we've got some first impressions. At the risk of sounding obvious, the MacBook Air is incredibly light and tiny. Initial impressions of the MacBook Air are almost overwhelmingly positive. It's incredibly light and tiny, and has all the features we've come to expect from the MacBook line. But there's no optical drive and the hard drive isn't the biggest.

If your weight requirements extend to 4-pounds and under, then the MacBook Air is not best of breed. The Sony VAIO VGN-SZ791N and the Lenovo ThinkPad X61 are now the favorites. For those who pre-ordered already and were sold as soon as Jobs whipped out the manila folder, the MacBook Air is hands down the thinnest and prettiest laptop in the market. The MacBook Air is officially the thinnest laptop, and the lightest of those with a 13-inch screen. But there were compromises that had to be made.

Apple MacBook Air - First Look review
Source: Pocket Lint Anglais EN→FR
As a piece of engineering, the MacBook Air is impressive and Apple should be commended for getting all that tech into a device that is so thin. Up close and personal it's very impressive and makes our 6-month old MacBook Pro look like someone from Fat Camp. So why aren't we getting all excited about it as much as we should? Well for us it comes down to that non-replaceable battery. What's the point of having a portable device if you have to be within 5 hours of a power supply. Granted 5 hours is a long time and Apple suggest that if you opt for the SSD option you'll get even longer, but the inability to be able to replace the battery on the fly is a deal breaker for us. It might be fine when you first get it out of the box, but what happens in 2 years time when you've got to take it back to Apple because the battery is giving you below par performance?

Thinner is better. At least, that's what Apple seems to think, judging by the new MacBook Air. It's so thin you could use it to shave. In fact, the 11-inch version is the most portable laptop we've ever encountered, even taking netbooks into account. The 11-inch Apple MacBook Air is remarkably thin and really enjoyable to use.

There is little to complain about with the MacBook Air 11-inch. It is, in a word, spectacular. It delivers performance in a package that is surprisingly complete and this, coupled with the design, makes the £1020 for the model reviewed here almost justifiable. Of course, that’s still expensive by any standards and there’s no avoiding the fact that you can get a new MacBook Pro, which is more powerful in all directions, for less money (and an SSD version of that starts from £1199). But the MacBook Air isn’t about affordability, it’s about making a statement, it’s about travelling light without having to sacrifice power and design. It won’t suit every taste and the lack of optical drive and connections will make the MacBook Air impractical for many, but you can’t help marvelling at it.

Apple's MacBook Air 11-inch is an impressive achievement in technology. The laptop is thinner and lighter than any netbook on the market but provides superior performance. Of course, at $999 it is much more expensive but less than the past base MacBook Air. Compared to other ultraportables, it does sacrifice performance, storage and running time to provide its ultrathin profile.

In fact, you can throw more at it than you might imagine. With an Nvidia GeForce 320M discrete chip inside, the MacBook Air eased through our Crysis test at native resolution, averaging 36fps at Low quality settings. Full HD MKVs played smoothly, as did 720p clips on YouTube. It even managed a little video editing, smoothly previewing three HD clips simultaneously in CyberLink PowerDirector. While we wouldn't recommend the Air to enthusiasts, it can do a perfectly good job with home movies.

Overall, we really liked the new 11-inch MacBook. It`s one of those things that you fall in love with at first sight and even when you decided to wipe that drool off your face and look deeper below the aluminum skin it still manages to impress. The price may seem steep at first but as we keüt saying throught the review, for the kind of engineering that has gone into making the device what it is, we think its well worth it.

Unlike a netbook, the 11in MacBook Air will rarely keep you waiting. A 5-hour-plus battery is good, running longer in the Air’s native Mac OS X. And measured statistics don’t show what a delight the 11in is to hold and work with. A perfect carry-anywhere notebook? Not quite – a 3G modem’s absence is becoming embarrassing, while the screen resolution is just beyond the comfort level. Elsewhere, we have to give due credit. As an exceedingly compact notebook – or a dear netbook – that will happily and snappily run OS X, Linux or Windows, the MacBook Air 11in is the category’s new gold standard.

The first Macbook Air, released in 2008, was a computer that could be sold on style as well as processing power. The new model continues that theme: it's a well-designed laptop, thin, lightweight and beautifully engineered. Samsung's Q330 is a Windows laptop with similar processing power, and though it may be less stylish, it's nearly half the price. If you don't need the Mac looks, a cheaper model is better value.

On the other hand if you need a Mac for heavy work, the amount you’ll pay for decent upgrades will also get you a much more capable MacBook Pro. The new 11-inch Air is undeniably gorgeous and will win many people over purely for its looks, but is sadly just a bit too underpowered to be recommended wholeheartedly.

Apple MacBook Air 11 Review
Source: Student Buying Guide Anglais EN→FR
The MacBook Air 11.6-inch laptop is a beautiful laptop and a treat to carry around and use. It’s of course not perfect, and the one thing that prevents it from being a sure fire recommendation is all of the great competition out there for 11.6-inch laptops that are much cheaper. For instance, you can get the Acer Aspire 1830t with a Core i3 processor and more ports for $699. The Dell Inspiron M101z and HP Pavilion dm1z and Toshiba Satellite T215 are all also attractively priced at around $500 - $650. If you need more power than the MacBook Air in an 11.6” form factor there’s also the Alienware m11x. All that competition though and the MacBook Air still reigns as the most drool worthy and well constructed of all these in the 11-inch laptop category. The aluminum unicast body is extremely solid feeling and the feather light weight just amazing. The screen on the MacBook Air 11 also stands out against any of the competition. In conclusion, I do recommend the MacBook Air 11.6-inch to students that happen to have a little extra money and can warrant paying a premium for the Apple brand, quality and support. I think most students are going to have to step up to the 128GB storage version to fit all the programs and files you’ll need when in school, so that means you’re looking at a price of around $1,199. The 4GB memory upgrade is probably worth the extra $100 but the processor upgrade to 1.60Ghz is not worth it. If you’re on a budget and can’t justify the cost of the MacBook Air 11, at least you’re in luck with all the other options out there, and if you can afford the MacBook Air 11 then consider yourself lucky and in for a treat!

Apple's MacBook Air isn't for everyone; its modest specifications, limited ports and relatively small storage will disappoint some. Apple claims that the MacBook Air's battery life is five hours; it lasted 4 hours and 27 minutes in our battery rundown test, where we looped an XviD file in full screen mode. Just like the MacBook Pro, the MacBook Air has a non-removable lithium-polymer battery.

With the late 2010 release, the MacBook Air leaves behind its novelty image and becomes a genuine rival to the entry-level MacBook and MacBook Pro. It has a power that belies its on-paper clock speed, a gorgeous screen and with its new battery and energy-saving technology, instant-on convenience. We miss the backlit keyboard, though, and hope it returns in the next generation of MacBook Airs. It's still pretty expensive too, with the range starting at £849 and this particular model costing £999. As much as the MacBook Air is a beautiful machine, you really do have to think carefully before buying one. There are myriad alternative laptops that are no less portable, and that almost universally offer better specs than the 11in Air. If, therefore, you’re the kind of person that cares purely about what you physically get for your money, this isn’t the system for you. However, if you think value is in more than just the price, have the money to burn, and want an ultra-portable laptop that, as well as being capable of performing all he every day tasks you throw at it, makes you feel satisfied just to have used it, then you should definitely consider an 11in MacBook Air.

The 11in MacBook Air is an impressively slender, lightweight laptop with a large, comfortable keyboard, a bright screen and long battery life. If you can afford it, it’s a good choice if you want an ultra-portable laptop that’s more capable than a netbook. However, the 13in MacBook Air remains our favourite ultra-portable laptop. Although it’s more expensive and is a bit bigger and heavier, it has the benefit of a higher resolution screen, a bigger SSD, faster applications performance and dramatically longer battery life.

Macbook Air 11.6 inch video review – really a portable laptop you must love

All in all, I think Apple really did a great job with their Air. Yes, it does have its flaws, but overall it’s a device you cannot not love. And that’s not just me saying that, but everyone who saw me with it last week, especially the girls in my office. I do think I would like one of these for Christmas, however in my Country the 128 GB version doesn’t go for $1299 like in the States (or even less on Amazon, where it it slightly discounted) , but more like 1500 euro, which is just too much. But I’m still considering it.

Our main issue with the Apple MacBook Air is the price. At £850 for the basic model and £1000 for our review model it certainly isn't cheap (although lets not forget the original MacBook Air debuted at around £1200). Especially when you consider you can get a MacBook with a 10-hour battery, more storage and a 2.4Ghz processor for £850.

In general Macbooks are reputed for their impeccable finish. The Macbook Air 11.6-inch is no exception to the rule. Its brushed aluminium shell is not subject to scratches. The Macbook Air is an ultra-portable with a good power/size ratio. Note however that if size is not a decisive factor in your choice, the MacBook Pro offers better battery life and much better performance.

While we tip our hats to that particular class of notebook for sliding prices for compact notebooks south, along with consumer expectations, the MacBook Air makes few of the same concessions in a form factor that no company outside Apple can really contest.

Apple's 11-inch Upgraded MacBook Air: Do 1.6GHz and 4GB Make a Difference?

The 11-inch MacBook Air may be portable perfection, but by default it’s not the perfect notebook. It’s slow, the battery doesn’t last all that long under actual use and the screen resolution, although appreciably high, makes things a little difficult to read.

This new MacBook Air review was not easy for us. Don’t get us wrong, Apple’s waif-like laptop is unquestionably gorgeous. It’s thinner than anything else in our manbag, and Apple’s new battery technology gives it a lifetime between charges to shame anything that’s been there before. This really shouldn’t be the only computer you own, but it’s the only one worth considering for life on the road.

Apple MacBook Air (11.6-inch) Review
Source: Notebookreview.com Anglais EN→FR

While there is something about the Apple/Microsoft dichotomy that seems to bring out the worst in tech aficionados, it's hard to deny that the new MacBook Airs, especially the smaller, 11.6-inch model, have style. Holding one makes it easy to believe Apple's rhetoric about the future of computing: all solid state, no optical drives, no power cycling, standby times and more. Despite the fact that it's pretty, and useful, and even pretty useful, it's still an Apple laptop. That means that buying into the MacBook Air means paying a little Apple tax - especially noticeable when compared to alternatives such as the Alienware M11x or Acer TimelineX 1830T. Still, Apple did well what Apple usually does well: they made a gorgeous computer. In today's increasingly cloud-centric world, that might just be enough

The 11-inch dynamo, the smallest and lightest laptop in Apple history, the one with the £849 price tag, is quite possibly the most desirable laptop Apple has ever made. The release of the iPad made me wonder if I’d consider a Mac laptop as my constant travelling companion ever again; the release of the 11-inch MacBook Air proves that there’s still plenty of life left in the Mac after all.

One of the things Apple made big deal of at the launch of the new MacBook Airs was their use of flash memory, which provides weight, size, and performance benefits over hard drives. While a fair degree of this was rhetoric, what was clear from our quick play is that despite a relatively slow CPU, the 11.6in Air felt really snappy. While it certainly won't be replacing your desktop for gaming and video editing tasks, it felt more than adequate for day to day activities.

I really like the form factor of the 11-inch MacBook Air. It's great to carry around. It's like an iPad for people who have to get real work done. I just wish it was faster. If Intel made a 32nm Core 2 Duo, clocked high enough the 11 would be perfect. I guess that’s what Atom is eventually supposed to be, but right now the performance is just too low. Intel appears to have been too conservative with Atom. Perhaps Bobcat and ARM’s Cortex A15 will light a fire under Intel's Atom team.

The new 11.6-inch version of the MacBook Air kills both birds with one stone, as the smallest current Apple laptop (there were 12-inch PowerBook models as recently as five years ago), and also lowering the entry price to $999, coincidentally, the same as the white basic 13-inch MacBook. Apple makes the MacBook Air both smaller and less expensive, creating an excellent ultraportable, but leaving out a few features along the way.

On the surface the MacBook Air looks like an expensive option compared to Apple's MacBook Pro that you get off the shelf. In fact, at a quick glance the difference is over £500, but to be fair, the off the shelf MacBook Pro doesn't come with the flash storage; an optional upgrade that adds £640 to the price tag. Factor that in and the MacBook Pro's pricing starts to become more realistic considering the lack of optical drive and ports like the Ethernet and FireWire. So what you are actually getting is a fair deal, an expensive one agreed, but it's that move to SSD that is the expensive element here, not necessarily Apple just ripping you off. When we reviewed the first MacBook Air in February 2008 we slammed it. Why? Because it was overly expensive and it was too ahead of its time when it came to losing the Ethernet socket; all of that, combined with an average battery life, meant we felt it was a model that was never destined to leave the house.

Size does matter with the 11-inch McBook Air
Source: Wired Magazine Anglais EN→FR
However, if you’re the type who doesn’t mind using Windows, we can’t justify purchasing the 11-inch Air versus a netbook. A netbook on average costs $300 to $500 and isn’t much worse than the Air when it comes down to what you’ll be using it for — less work, more play. An Air will cost you at least double the amount of a netbook, and unfortunately it doesn’t deliver twice the performance.

MacBook Air 11.6 Review
Source: Slashgear Anglais EN→FR

The previous MacBook Air was most comfortable browsing and playing video, but Apple is positioning the 2010 model as more of an all-round machine. Still, the updated CPU and GPU do at least stand a better chance for more mobile graphics crunching. We ran Geekbench on our test unit, an entry-level 11.6-inch Air with the 1.4GHz processor and 2GB of memory, and it scored 2261. That’s actually a couple hundred points less than the previous-gen 1.86GHz Air we reviewed in 2008, though it’s worth noting that model was selling for a huge $2,499 compared to the $999 of today’s version. More importantly, perhaps, is how the CPU and GPU work together, and we have a real-world example to illustrate it. We took a quick day trip in and out of San Francisco this week to meet with HP; knowing that the story was going to be under embargo, we wouldn’t really need a laptop since we woudn’t be processing videos and images until we got back. As such, no need for the usual MacBook Pro, right? The obvious device of choice to take on the road is the iPad.

Hands on with the new Apple MacBook Air
Source: Reg Hardware Anglais EN→FR
So am I tempted to toss £849 on an 11.6in Air? As a lover of small, slim, lightweight computers, I sure am. The problem is that, since performance is inevitably limited by form-factor in this and all similar sized machines, it's not going to be radically better than my year-old Acer Aspire Timeline 1810TZ, which, incidentally, can deliver 50 per cent more battery life than the Air and has Gigabit Ethernet, a third USB port and a SD card slot. But it's also heavier and considerably thicker. And it runs Windows 7. I could hackintosh it, but those who have report that not all the parts work under Mac OS X, in particular the Wi-Fi and sleep mode, two features I rely on. Yes, there will always be a comparably sized machine that's cheaper and/or more featured than the 11.6in Air, but you'll be hard pushed to find one as good looking and a sheer bloody portable. And as anyone who, like me, has dropped an Air before, that aluminium casing can't half take some punishment.

Apple said it would never make a netbook, and it hasn't. The 11-inch MacBook Air is a powerful ultraportable that makes other systems in its class look positively bloated. More important, this machine never keeps you waiting, thanks to the way it uses flash memory. We just wish the hinge for the display were a bit tighter to prevent unwanted movement. Some may prefer the new 13-inch MacBook Air ($1,299), which offers a higher-resolution screen, faster CPU, and a SD Card slot. If you're torn between Windows and Mac, the $899 Acer Timeline 1830T offers a much faster Core i7 processor and longer battery life but integrated graphics and a much less compelling design. But if you want the thinnest, lightest Mac experience ever, this Air will leave you elated.

It’s probably no surprise to learn we’re smitten by this MacBook Air. For those who crave the sensibly-sized screen and proper keyboard of a full-sized laptop, but wish it could weigh next to nothing, perform well and last a full day, there’s nothing quite like it. It doesn’t roar through tasks like the VAIO Z13, nor quite match its wonderful screen, but the MacBook Air comes across as reasonable value by comparison. Yes, it’s dear, but it really is an experience worth paying for.

The battery lasts long enough that I could work and enjoy some entertainment for many hours – about 4-5 depending on conditions. The screen is bright enough that even with sun shining through the window it was viewable despite being a glossy screen. The keyboard is comfortable enough to type even in a bumpy car. The size is perfect for pulling the computer out of the bag even in cramped spaces. The weight and thickness make carrying the MacBook Air in a bag, with every possible accessory I could possibly need, lighter than my previous monster of a laptop. It has enough power to charge an iPad and other accessories over USB overnight.

Do we wish Apple would've gone with a Core i3 CPU? Sure, but if you need even more power there's always the 13" MacBook Pro. The Air is remarkably responsive, and while it's not cut out for heavy A/V editing, there's more than enough here for the casual Photoshop user. If you're okay with the simple elegance that the new Macbook Air 13 is designed to deliver, with perhaps a few of the inherent limitations that come within its sleek packaging, you'll have a tough time finding a nicer 13-inch thin and light notebook.

MacBooks are subject to a lot of debate. There are those who think they're amazing with pricing in line with a finish of real quality. The MacBook Air 13.3 inch has a better size/power ratio than the 11.5 inch version. It also gives higher battery life. Of the two Macbook Airs out in 2010, we see this 13.3 inch version as the better choice.

The first MacBook Air will go down in history as one of the most divisive pieces of tech ever created. Either a triumph of design and simplicity or an overpriced, feature-bereft lump depending on your point of view, it split the tech world straight down the middle. The 13-inch Apple MacBook Air is expensive and in many ways restrictive, but a stunning design, great battery life and brilliant ease of use mean this laptop is more than style over substance.

While the 11-inch model will be most attractive if you're looking for the smallest and lightest Mac laptop, those who want to upgrade its drive, processor, and RAM will want to consider its small size versus the slightly larger 13-inch model, which comes equipped with a better set of specs.

Leave it to Apple to make you feel fat. The 13.3-inch Apple MacBook Air is as beautiful as it is thin. This light laptop is so slender, in fact, that you may feel like you're carrying a folder rather than a notebook. And even though the MacBook Air may be sliver-thin, it isn't flimsy or underpowered. The 13-inch MacBook Air's powerful performance, sleek beauty, and decent screen size make it a powerful travel companion for on-the-go users.

If you need a super portable laptop that is still pretty capable, get the 11-inch MacBook Air. If you need something that offers a bit more power and a smidge better resolution, go for the 13-inch form factor. You’ll be getting a great operating system in the form of OS X Lion, and a lot of amazing built-in software, such as iMovie. OS X is no longer remarkably better than Windows since Windows 7 came out, but the free apps like iMovie, iPhoto and GarageBand have no match on Microsoft’s side.

The latest and, at 13 inches, largest version of the MacBook Air series is undoubtedly the best. Over the previous generations it offers a better processor, a backlit keyboard and a Thunderbolt connector, while leaving everything that made its predecessors so attractive intact. It's still not cheap, but it has gained that vital bit of credibility as a worthwhile premium laptop solution, and is now worth its asking price. For many, PCs costing half the price offer a better, more sensible solution, but the MacBook Air remains king of the ultraportable brigade.

When Apple released the re-designed Air in 2010, we gave it a score of 8.5 out of 10 and an editor’s choice award. At the time, we were impressed by the performance of the Air, considering its absurdly thin size. Now the qualifier to that statement can be removed. The second-gen Intel Core i5 in the new model provides performance that is almost indistinguishable from a larger laptop.

The Air remains a relatively expensive proposition, but Apple's entry level MacBook offers excellent performance and portability. Apple claims that the MacBook Air's battery life is "up to seven" hours; it lasted almost six hours in our battery rundown test, where we looped an XviD file in full screen mode. Just like the MacBook Pro, the MacBook Air has a non-removable lithium-polymer battery.

But if none of these features are deal-breakers, the 2011 Macbook Air is the best ultraportable, nay laptop, in the land for day-to-day computing. Buy one now. Really, it’s that good. Even if you’re not a Mac OS X person, but want a super-strong, impossibly thin yet powerful 13” ultraportable to run Windows, it’s hard to beat the 13” Thunderbolt Macbook Air. It’s capable enough to be your primary laptop unless you’re a serious 3D gamer, is gorgeous looking and has enough ports to get by on. Paired with Apple’s expensive Thunderbolt Display, it can even become a desktop replacement with Ethernet, FireWire 800 and additional USB ports. In short, that difficult decision between prioritizing portability and performance has pretty much been made for you: the MacBook Air grants you both. Build-quality is reassuringly strong, speed and performance are sufficient for most users, and the ability to drop the Air into a bag and hardly notice it’s in there is a huge advantage. In 13.3-inch form it’s a little more expensive than the entry-level 13-inch MacBook Pro (and you get a slower processor, less storage and no optical drive), but we’d wager the Air could still hold its own. Altogether, the MacBook Air remains our ultraportable of choice.

With the MacBook Air 13-inch (Thunderbolt), Apple did what it had to do to recapture some of the momentum it lost when the MacBook Pros and its Windows counterparts migrated over to the latest Intel components. Putting in the Core i5 processor, upping the standard memory configuration to 4GB, and having a new graphics subsystem translate into a significant performance improvement over the previous Air 13-inch. That and adding a Thunderbolt port, bringing back the backlit keyboard, and the timely release of Mac OS X Lion will surely make it a formidable player in the ultraportable space. But if its looks haven't seduced you yet, your money will go a lot further with the Toshiba Portege R835-P50X and Acer Aspire AS3830TG-6431.

We already loved the 13-inch MacBook Air, and Apple's improvements make it the perfect notebook as far as we're concerned. When you combine a sleek ultraportable design with a great display and touchpad then nearly double the performance--without sacrificing battery life--you're left with a winner. You also get an improved backlit keyboard, Thunderbolt support, and the more powerful and versatle Mac OS X Lion. The 13-inch Air is also a better deal than the Samsung Series 9, which costs $50 more when you configure it with the same amount of flash memory. Add it all up and you have a machine that not only earns our Editors' Choice award but also a very rare five-star rating.

The 11in MacBook Air is exactly the same price as Asus' 11in contender, although with only half the RAM and SSD space. But what it lacks in these respects it makes up for in build quality – especially when it comes to the screen – and for giving you the option to have a machine running both Windows 7 and Mac OS X.

The new Mac OS X Lion brings a lot of improvements and above all some nice new features: LaunchPad, Mission Control, Versions, Auto Save, Resume, Air Drop, Mac App Store, the redesigned Mail app, full screen apps and new multi-touch gestures. Couple that with a slim profile and a body that weighs next to nothing and you’ve got a $999 that may actually worth the effort.

The Air was derided when it was first launched, and to some extent, rightly so. It was too slow and an example of form over function. With the 2011 refresh, Apple has managed to keep the remarkable form, but also add some internals that make this more than just a rich person's plaything. Now, the Air is an excellent day-to-day laptop, and one that we think most people will find more than adequate for their needs. Unless those needs are crunching the data that comes out of the CERN supercollider. If nothing else, Intel's Ultrabook specification proves that Apple had the right idea when it first launched the Air. There is demand for these small laptops, and it's possible to build them and make them objects of desire while remaining useful.

With the removal of the MacBook 13, the MacBook Air 11 is now Apple's least expensive laptop available. While the 2011 update has brought some marked improvement in performance, it doesn't address enough of the other issues to make it a great replacement for the MacBook Pro. It certainly is extremely small and light but this is not a great primary computer due to the memory and storage concerns.

Apple MacBook Air 11in vs iPad 2 head-to-head review
Source: V3.co.uk Anglais EN→FR
Although it's technically a draw, the MacBook Air wins out in key areas of performance, interface and connectivity. The laptop is definitely the better option for productivity on the move, and can be used in an office because it has excellent specifications. Those who just want to browse the internet on the move would be better suited to the iPad 2. We recommend buying a Wi-Fi-only iPad 2 and using the extra money to invest in a mobile phone contract with a generous data allowance. The tablet can be tethered to the smartphone when Wi-Fi is not available, and this will save on having to pay two separate contracts. Given the choice, V3 definitely opts for the laptop over the tablet, as it is so much more useful and is definitely worth the extra investment. WINNER- MacBook Air.

We reviewed Apple's last Macbook Air just over seven months ago, but this latest version has some new hardware and the latest version of Apple's OS X operating system. The inclusion of the latest version of the operating system, OS X Lion, is the most important change, and it worked well on the Macbook Air. This is an excellent but expensive laptop, but it is a pleasure to use and looks great.

Since the company has discontinued its popular white MacBook, the Apple MacBook Air 11in (Mid-2011) now stands alone as the most affordable Mac portable. At £849, you get 2GB memory and 64GB of solid-state drive; another £150 doubles both those specs to a decent 4GB and 128GB storage. Whether you’re a student or business professional, it’s a great carry-anywhere laptop with more power than we’d imagine was possible at this size, yet still providing decent battery life.

We have no hesitation in recommending the 2011 11-inch MacBook Air, but before spending £1,399 on this expensively customised model, you should ask yourself if you really need the extra power and storage. If you want your Air as a convenient portable Mac to supplement to your main machine, you might be better off with an entry-level model.

A year after the Core 2 Duo MacBook Airs, Apple has now included the Core i5 in its 11.6-inch. The MacBook Air 11.6-inch 2011 still offers a very good performance to size ratio. This ultraportable laptop continues to get more powerful but Apple hasn't redesigned the cooling system to cope with this. Plus, the connectivity is still just as lite.

When the 11.6-inch MacBook Air was originally released in 2010, the word "netbook" was bandied about, as if the Air had anything in common with these portable, but not exactly powerful, mini laptops. A strong boost in CPU power puts the MacBook Air in the performance zone of the more expensive MacBook Pro, floating it well above its ultraportable competition.

Whereas last year's MacBook Air was a good machine for light work, the 2011 models are true replacements for mainstream portable Macs. The Apple MacBook Air 11in (mid 2011) is clearly a machine for the well heeled, with a starting price of £850 and desirable configurations coming in over £1,000. Nonetheless, it is far from a frivolous purchase. Its styling and build are unrivalled, it has plenty enough performance for everyday computing, it'll at least half a working day on battery, and the improvements to MacOSX make it a lovely system to use. It does lack connectivity right out of the box (even eshewing the SD card slot of its 13in sibling) but, thanks to its ThunderBolt port, it can actually connect to just about anything you desire with the right adapter (once they become available). Many competitors are getting close but right now the Air is still flying high.

Source: PC Mag Anglais EN→FR
So how does the Apple MacBook Air 11-inch (Thunderbolt) stack up in the category its predecessor shaped? It's certainly a fine laptop, with plenty of features you'll only get from Apple, like outstanding design, a highly refined multitouch trackpad, and OS X Lion. But you'll have to sacrifice several features that come standard on other 11-inch laptops, like all-day battery life, an Ethernet port, SD card reader, and significant storage space. The Editors' Choice Alienware M11xr3 and Lenovo X120e provide all these features, with superior performance to boot. When judged purely on its feature set the MacBook Air 11-inch (Thunderbolt) comes up short compared with its peers. But with its light weight, striking looks, and Apple's well-deserved reputation for reliability, the MacBook Air 11-inch (Thunderbolt) presents a compelling package for Apple devotees.

We're just not sure consumers want to use an 11-inch laptop as their primary computer. Frequent travelers and students would, but a few family members and co-workers said they would prefer a larger 13-inch screen. Apple offers that, too, but you'll need to spend either $1,199 for the 13-inch MacBook Pro or $1,299 for the 13-inch MacBook Air. The 11-inch MacBook Air is a very good ultraportable, but some shoppers will prefer one of Apple's other options as an everyday notebook.

Netbook?

A very good laptop, uprated with the latest Intel processors, and also Apple's 10Gbit/s Thunderbolt connectivity. There are few Thunderbolt-enabled devices around, but expect more in 2012. If you're buying the high-end ($1199) 11-inch MacBook Air and care about performance, the 1.8GHz CPU upgrade is worth it. You shouldn't expect any real impact on battery life in normal use but you'll see a noticeable gain in performance across the board. Subjectively the CPU upgrade does make the system snappier, easily faster than the base 13-inch MacBook Air.

The MacBook Air is in its third iteration of the current design and it's tangibly better than the two that came before it. The 2010 (and older) models are just plain slow by comparison. Thanks to architectural, frequency and thermal improvements, one of the cores from a 2012 MacBook Air ends up being faster than two from a 2010 MBA. In other words, the 2012 models end up being more than twice as fast as the 2010 models in many of our CPU bound tests.

The mid-2012 MacBook Air is a very solid offering and continues to be a target for many notebook manufacturers, and for good reason. Four years after its unveiling, the Air is still one of the sexiest notebooks on the market and with the recent slight price adjustment, it seems to be competing well even on value terms. Intel is likely to put some extra pressure on the Air with second and third generation ultrabooks, many of which are shaping up to be real contenders, at least on paper. But even still, the Air is the system that all other Windows ultrabooks strive to be like and that’s quite the complement.

We aren't sure what has happened, but it very much appears that Apple laptops are no longer all that much more expensive than a decent PC. The Dell XPS 13 uses older tech, but still costs nearly the same as this 13-inch Air. Arguably, the Air offers a lot of advantages too. The screen is 16:10, which, for most computer use is far better than that stupid 16:9 ratio, foisted upon us by HD television.

Apple has updated what was already one of the better ultraportable laptops on the market to keep it competitive, with a downright impressive set of specification upgrades and (in theory) some of the best connectivity going thanks to its dual USB 3.0 and Thunderbolt combination. However, we can’t say we’re not disappointed to have the same old 1,440 x 900 TN screen rather than an IPS-panel Retina display, especially since some of the competition will be packing 1,600 x 900 or even 1080p IPS screens on their premium 13in Ultrabooks.

Apple has given the MacBook Pro 13-inch some real improvements, and the end result is a laptop that's worth buying—if you're due for a new one anyway. Owners of the previous MacBook Pro 13-inch (Late 2011) or the previous MacBook Pro 13-inch (Thunderbolt) may want to stick with the current model. Last year's model upgraded to second-generation Core processors from the two-year old Core Duo, which saw much more dramatic improvements in performance.

Apple's MacBook Air 13 refresh may be most notable for its $100 price drop from last years model but this ultrathin and light design that is several years old still holds up well even compared to the onslaught of competition from the second generation of ultrabooks. Performance has improved as has battery life thanks to the new Ivy Bridge based dual core processor. Storage and memory remain unchanged but now external expansion is improved with USB 3.0.

Not too long ago, the MacBook Air practically stood alone in the computer landscape with its unique blend of design, size, and performance, an improvement on the thin laptop with low-voltage CPU. This year's MacBook Air opts for gradual improvements rather than anything revolutionary, but lowered prices continue to make it the go-to mainstream recommendation for any MacBook owner-to-be.

At first blush, the MacBook Air doesn't appear to have changed much between 2011 and 2012: it looks exactly the same, save for those USB 3.0 ports and new MagSafe2 connector, and even the 50Wh battery remains unchanged. As for those faster Ivy Bridge processors, well, every PC maker is refreshing their Ultrabooks with Intel's new chips, if they haven't already.

With the PC industry throwing every ultrabook it can come up with at the market in the hope of scoring a win, Apple has done exactly what it needs to with the MacBook Air. Faster, more flexible and cheaper, it presents the strongest challenge from an Air model to-date. That’s certainly enough to leave it as our choice of ultraportable notebook.

The 13-inch MacBook Air remains our favorite ultraportable notebook. In addition to best-in-class ergonomics, loud speakers and a svelte profile, you now get faster performance and much longer battery life than the Ultrabook competition for $100 less than before. The only reason we dropped the rating from a perfect 5 stars to 4.5 stars is because some Ultrabooks offer higher-resolution screens and more compact designs.

Few companies generate anything like the buzz that Apple does for its new products, with rumours flying around months before an official announcement is made. The new 13-inch Apple MacBook Air is as thin and stunningly designed as ever, but it's now packing the latest Intel Ivy Bridge processor, making it more formidable for graphics tasks and bringing those all-important high-speed USB 3.0 ports. It's still going to cost you a pretty penny though.

When it first launched in 2008, Apple’s sleek and skinny MacBook Air didn’t have much competition in the premium ultraportable market. With an Intel Ivy Bridge CPU and speedy USB 3.0 ports, Apple’s latest Air is still a strong candidate for best ultraportable available. And that’s it. If you bought a MacBook Air last year, there frankly isn’t enough here to warrant an upgrade, but if you didn’t, there’s one more treat in store: it’s now £999 for the 128GB model and £1,249 for 256GB, down £100 in both cases. It was an attractive enough proposition before, but the 2012 model sets the bar exceedingly high for the impending wave of Ivy Bridge Ultrabooks.

The MacBook Air 11-inch (Mid 2012) is a great laptop for writers. It's light at less than 2.5 pounds, and even if you cart along the AC adapter, you're still carrying less than 3 pounds. It's speedy enough for day to day use, and its keyboard is more comfortable to use than the virtual keyboard on a tablet. Unfortunately, ultrabooks like the Asus Zenbook Prime have caught up in features: the UX31A is imperceptibly heavier, yet has a larger 1080p screen and much more storage space on its SSD. Full blown business ultraportables like the Editors' Choice Lenovo ThinkPad X230 are better still at most tasks, including battery life and storage. The 11-inch MacBook Pro is best as a secondary laptop for when you need more than a tablet.

The 2012 version of the MacBook Air 11" has added processor power and battery life to the 2011 stock and is just as excellent of a deal in terms of size, capability and make. When we looked at the mid-2012 model of the larger-screened 13.3-inch MacBook Air, we were quick to point out that, impressive as it is, we've seen quite a few Windows ultrabooks with similar displays and internals but lower prices. But that's not so much the case with the smaller model. We've reviewed Asus' 2011 ZenBook UX21, but as of this writing, we haven't yet seen the Asus UX21A with its newer "Ivy Bridge" processor and backlit keyboard.

Apple's 2012 refresh of the MacBook Air 11 brings with it some significant improvements from the past base $999 model but this isn't the huge revision many had hoped for. The chassis is still the same extremely thin and light platform as before making it the smallest of the 11-inch laptops on the market. The competition may be catching up, but the 2013 edition of the 11-inch MacBook Air remains a classy piece of kit. The Haswell update provides significant improvements in performance, graphics and battery life, and the premium prices charged for many Windows Ultrabooks means that it no longer looks over-priced when compared to its nearest rivals. Despite connectivity limitations, the design and raw power make the MacBook Air a worthwhile purchase for Apple fans or those looking for a change from the Windows platform. You can run any applications you'll need for business use, including Microsoft Office, and the trackpad and Mac OS X make the Air a pleasurable device to use. And the good news for first-time Air purchasers, is that they'll be getting extra battery life and storage space, still at the original 2011 price tag. So while the previous entry-level model would have set you back £849 for a 64GB, Intel Core i5 Ivy Bridge model with around three and a half hours of battery life, you can now get your hands on a 128GB model running Intel Haswell and offering around eight hours of juice for the same price. However, savvy buyers might want to wait until autumn to get their hands on a MacBook Air running Mavericks.

The 2013 MacBook Air 11-inch takes Apple's ultra-portable notebook a significant step in the right direction, but it's by no means a great leap forward. It makes advances in some key areas, most notably graphics performance and faster flash, but these are partly held back by the slower CPUs.
90% Apple Macbook Air 13 2013 : Increvable

The updates to the 11-inch MacBook Air provide a very compelling reason for many to consider looking at an extremely portable laptop over a limited tablet system. The new processor provides it with battery life on par with many tablets. The upgraded storage also makes it a compelling option against the larger 13-inch. The big problem that plagues the Apple MacBook Air's is their dated screens.

Despite connectivity limitations, the design and raw power make the MacBook Air a worthwhile purchase for Apple users or those looking for a change from the Windows platform. You can run any applications you'll need for business use, including Microsoft Office, and the trackpad and Mac OS X make the Air a pleasure to use. The good news for first-time Air purchasers, is that they'll be getting Intel Haswell-based models at a cheaper price than the 2012 MacBook Airs. However, savvy buyers might want to wait until autumn to get their hands on a MacBook Air running Mavericks.

Despite the swings-and-roundabouts benchmarking results, the new MacBook Air is a definite and significant step up from last year's release. The battery life is little short of incredible. Business travellers taking long flights and students who need it all day for lectures and then throughout the evening for writing an essay will love its all-day power. The faster graphics and quicker storage do much to compensate for the slower processors, but we wish Apple had at least matched the 2012 MacBook Air's clock speeds.

The 2013 MacBook Air 13" is faster when running Windows 8 than it is under Apple's OS X Mountain Lion. It also keeps some of the computer's original advantages such as the sound quality and thin, lightweight chassis. On the other hand, the battery life gets nearly halved and the screen's colours become far less accurate.

Apple’s newest, most powerful, and most refined MacBook Air finally reaches that ‘all-day-playback’ milestone that is so crucial for a portable device. You can't look at what Apple was able to achieve with the current generation of MacBook Air products and not be impressed. Could Apple shrink the Air and keep the screen size or notch it up an inch or more? A full HD Air, anyone? There’s probably a good reason for this ongoing big borders arrangement – rigidity, antennas and suchlike – but I think it’s time for Apple to show some design innovation again rather than simply adding the 802.11ac Wi-Fi and tweaking the latest Intel chippery.

The new Air is a nice machine, but it offers nothing you can’t get now, or get soon, from Haswell-powered Ultrabooks: decent performance and a long battery life. SATA Express and 802.11ac are both standards World+Dog will soon implement. In short, choosing a skinny laptop is now simply a matter of whether you want Mac OS X or not.

The latest 13-inch Apple MacBook Air is as slick as ever: thrillingly lightweight, gorgeous-looking and now offering both speedy performance and considerable battery life. This laptop will last you 12 hours of internet- enabled usage before needing a recharge. For the ultimate in portablilty, the 11-inch model still reigns, though battery life can’t match this laptop. And if you have last year’s model, you may also be tempted to upgrade by the super-fast recovery from standby which is way faster than the few seconds it used to be. Overall, this is fast, lightweight and, thanks to a £50 price drop, excellent value.

The 2013 MacBook Air 13 delivers what it promises: excellent battery life. As the MacBook Pro range became slimmer and more capable, not to mention introducing Retina resolution, some began to question the Air’s purpose in Apple’s range. We’ll certainly admit to being swayed by the high-pixel-density screens, though the knowledge that a Haswell upgrade is likely to come soon might delay us from buying one today.

The 13-inch Air’s new $1,100 starting price undercuts competitors like the ASUS Zenbook X31A-DH71 and Acer Aspire S7, but it puts Apple in an uncomfortable position. For the first time in years, the company is selling based on price rather than quality. Even with the price cut, the Air’s inferior display and merely adequate hard drive capacity hinder its overall value.

The MacBook Air 13-inch (Mid 2013) is the system you want to be using if you need to deliver real work away from your desk. The fact that it can return such a long battery life while still using a mainstream processor is astonishing. Make no mistake, this simple score shows that laptops haven't conceded the battery life prizes to the mobile OS tablets yet. The MacBook Air 13 is close, but not quite perfect, since it lacks a built in HDMI-out port and the slower-clocked processor returns slower multimedia performance on benchmark tests than rivals. That said, due to its excellent battery life, portability, and its very good day-to-day performance, we have no qualms in giving the Apple MacBook Air 13-inch (Mid 2013) the Editors' Choice for ultraportable laptops.

Make no bones about it: the MacBook Air is no longer the top dog in the thin-and-light laptop field. With the Yoga 2 Pro packing in a high-DPI display and a similar all-round specification for only 99p more, and no shortage of fine Windows 8 alternatives, the MacBook Air has some serious competition on its hands.

We were sort of expecting the new MacBook to be a letdown, after all very little has changed other than the price tag and the processor speed. Instead we’ve fallen in love with it all over again – it’s simply the best laptop we’ve ever seen. Admittedly the resolution is a bit old-hat, but right now we’d still rather have the extravagant battery life. Only time will tell if we’ll change our mind when the Retina version arrives…

The saving grace of the MacBook remains its outstanding battery life. We generally take manufacturer’s claims with a pinch of salt, but for routine tasks such as wordprocessing and occasional Web browsing the MacBook Air really does live up to Apple’s estimate of 12 hours of battery life. It may look a little old-fashioned, but the ability to get a full day’s work from a lightweight laptop such as this makes the MacBook Air an excellent choice for business travellers.

MacBook Air 13-inch: If you squint hard enough, you'll see a lesser-spotted Apple Price Cut
Source: Reg Hardware Anglais EN→FR
Many people will harp on about the dated display, but that £100 price cut will appeal to plenty of people who just want a lightweight laptop with good battery life. That should keep sales going for a few months yet, but this old dog needs to learn a few new tricks if it wants to keep its position as leader of the pack.

If you care about screen quality above all other considerations then probably not. The MacBook Air's screen isn't bad, but it isn't good either: it's just deeply average. This will be enough to dismiss the MacBook Air in some eyes, but this doesn't tell the whole story. That's because everything else about the MacBook Air remains outstanding. Its design is still unmatched and the battery life is out of this world considering the base 13-inch Macbook Air only costs £850 now. This also means it's exceedingly good value, so much so that anyone who is 'platform neutral' will find it hard to consider anything else.

What was once a luxury ultraportable has become a bargain. For a reasonable $999, the MacBook Air boasts best-in-class battery life, fast performance and an excellent keyboard and touchpad. Plus, OS X Mavericks is easier to use and less of a hassle than Windows 8 when it comes to security updates. However, the flash storage on this Air isn't as speedy as that on the last model.

As we anticipated Apple has reacted to the very minor price difference between the MacBook Pro with Retina display and the 2013 MacBook Air, by reducing the price by as much as £130. This means the whole MacBook Air line up is now under £1,000, which should serve to make it even more popular than it is currently. Unfortunately in some areas the 2014 Mac Air isn't quite as good as last year's model - the flash storage seems to be slower than it was in 2013. For this reason, if you can get a discounted 13in 2013 MacBook Air from the Apple refurb store, it is still be worth considering as an alternative to the newer 2014 model.

Even Apple's cheapest laptop is head and shoulders above most of its competitors, and in terms of build, battery life and usability the MacBook Air 11 is an all-round winner. It's also that most unusual of items: an Apple product which represents good value for money. That screen is really starting to show its age, though, so fingers crossed that Apple brings out an Air with Retina Display soon.

The 2014 MacBook Air, like the largely similar 2013 version, is all about battery life and portability. This 11-inch laptop, nearly the size of an iPad, now lasts almost as long as one, too. It could tip the balance in favor of the 11 for some. For others, though, an iPad plus keyboard might have replaced this already.

Surface Pro 3 vs MacBook Air comparison: Microsoft's new tablet is impressive, but can it really replace your laptop?
Source: Macworld.co.uk Anglais EN→FR
Overall, we take our hats off to Microsoft for its Surface Pro 3. It really does have specs that rival the MacBook Air and portability that brings it closer to competing tablets. But when it actually comes to using the Surface Pro 3 as a laptop, it's not the most comfortable of activities. We find the MacBook Air wonderful to work on for long periods of time, and with that lengthy battery life it's more suitable for full-day use.

The 2014 11-inch MacBook Air aptly demonstrates the truth of the age-old aphorism, "If it ain't broke, don't fix it." Last year's $999 model delivered spectacular battery life, solid performance, and a truly outstanding keyboard and touch pad—all packaged in a sleek aluminum chassis—for a price comparable to most Windows-based ultrabooks.

This is a niche device, suitable for Apple users that need both portability and power. While it’s tempting to compare it to other Ultrabooks, it actually has a lot in common with the Surface Pro 2, which has very similar specs and is built for a very specific type of Windows user. For the platform agnostic looking for thin, light, and powerful, the MacBook Air is certainly worth considering. Its “acceptable” display and other drawbacks make it tough to outright recommend over any and all competition.

With its lower price the 2014 11in MacBook Air is a great purchase. If you want the lightest laptop available there is no need to sacrifice power - the 11in MacBook Air is just as good as the 13in model. If you already own the mid-2013 MacBook Air, then there's really no reason to consider this new model. The speed differences are far too subtle for you to even consider upgrading. And if you can find last year's model on the cheap, then I'd also recommend going that route. Save the money, and enjoy your shiny new 99 percent as good as this year's model MacBook Air.

Apple:
