It's fully upgradeable too, including such luxuries as a digital TV tuner and the unique (for a consumer laptop at this price point) option of a Full HD, RGB-LED backlit screen, which makes this an intriguing choice for colour-critical work.

The newly redesigned Dell XPS 15 brings a lot of cool features to the table, but seems to miss the mark in the design department. With previous XPS notebooks being flagship models from Dell, it's disappointing to see such a bland and normal looking system. I think it's rather odd when you look at "budget" models like the Inspiron 15R and see flashier colors and sleeker profiles. Build quality was a step up at least, with metal panels protecting the screen and metal on the palmrest and keyboard trim inside the notebook. The plastic chassis felt strong, but left something to be desired when it came to accessing internal components. Users looking to replace the hard drive will find it very difficult, as the notebook requires full disassembly if they want to upgrade to an SSD later on. System performance was very good with the Intel Core i5 560M and NVIDIA GeForce GT420M performing well in a variety of tasks. The sound system was my favorite feature on this notebook, providing booming bass and great audio quality. Overall if you don't mind the looks, the XPS does offer a pretty good value, starting at $799 for the base configuration.

The Dell XPS 15 ($1,115 direct), a desktop replacement laptop, is a wonderland of lavish features, cutting-edge components, and ,overall, one of the best laptops I've tested. Even more impressive is that most of its parts are customizable before finalizing your purchase: The XPS 15 can be completely over the top or priced to meet a certain budget. It's one of the few 15-inch laptops that has support for a full 1080p screen resolution, a Skype-certified HD webcam, floor-thumping speakers, and every wireless technology imaginable. If the Intel Core i5 processor and Nvidia GeForce GT 420M (with Optimus technology) aren't groundbreaking enough for you, there are options for quad-core processors and a more powerful graphics card. The only thing left to do now is hand the XPS 15 the Editors' Choice in the desktop replacement laptop category.

Le Dell XPS 15 pouces jouit d'un boîtier de très bonne qualité, et profite surtout d'un excellent système audio. Sa puissance est largement suffisante, mais limitée au 720p pour les jeux vidéo. On apprécie son écran 1080p, son lecteur Blu-ray et ses ports USB, mais on reste un peu sur notre faim pour le jeu en 3D et le manque d'autonomie. Il mérite cependant largement ses quatre étoiles.

As we had previously tested the Adamo XPS system with its aluminium chassis our expectations for the XPS 15 were set reasonably high and for the most part it delivered. The Aluminium lid looks and feels great and it was good to see that Dell continued the use of this material on the keyboard surround. It would have been good to have a full aluminium base too but being fair the plastic version used by Dell does have a good quality finish.

We're also still trying to get an HP Envy 14 in for comparison, and it would be great to get some Sony laptops in for testing as well, but with every passing week we tend to lose hope. At this point, the latest Envy 14 revision has been around for over three months. It still looks like it compares well with the new XPS, but the Radiance Infinity 900p panel is no longer an option, Waves comes standard while Beats costs extra, and Optimus trumps AMD's switchable graphics.

Touch has come a long way, baby. From the first Windows convertible tablets (which are still being produced by a couple of manufacturers) to the Apple iPad in all of its touch glory, touch-input devices today look and feel a lot better than they used to. The highly configurable XPS 15 is a speedy performer, and the touch screen in our test unit was both convenient and fun. It's a winning touch laptop.

The ThinkPad Edge E220s is the best-looking and most comfortable small business notebook on the market. Its gorgeous soft-plastic and chrome design makes a bold statement in the boardroom or the coffee shop and its keyboard provides the best typing experience in the business. Plus, its slight frame fits comfortably in even the smallest bag. Our only issue is the E220's below-average battery life, though the approximate 5 hours of runtime will be long enough for many users. If you need more endurance, consider the $855 Toshiba Portege R835, which lasts an hour and a half longer on a charge. However, if you want the ultimate in small business style and comfort, the ThinkPad Edge E220s should be at the top of your list.

If you're looking for a high-end PC that marries good looks and superb performance, and are more Windows than Mac, then you really shouldn't look any further than the Dell XPS 15. The final mention must go to the incredible Corning Gorilla Glass, Full HD display. It may not have the "wow" factor of the MacBook Pro with Retina display, but in the PC market we're not sure we've seen anything quite as impressive.

When I first laid hands (and eyes) on the new XPS 15, I was extremely impressed. It’s such a noticeable upgrade compared to previous XPS laptops in terms of build quality that I really can’t understate the fact. Dell’s in a bit of a Catch-22 here, of course, with a design that’s very similar to the MacBook Pro 15. On the one hand, if they do a 15” laptop that’s similar but not built as well (e.g. the XPS 15z from last year), they get complaints from people saying, “Apple can do it, so why can’t Dell?”

Dell Inc est une société multinationale de technologie qui développe, fabrique, vend et prend en charge les ordinateurs personnels et autres produits liés. Basée au Texas, Dell emploie plus de 82.700 personnes dans le monde (2009). En 2006, Dell a acheté le fabricant de matériel d'ordinateur Alienware. Dans la plupart des pays, les ordinateurs portables sont vendus directement aux consommateurs par Dell et chaque portable configuré sur mesure est assemblé en fonction d'une sélection d'options. La part de marché en ce qui concerne les ventes d'ordinateurs personnels en 2007 (étude de marché IDC): HP 18,9%, Dell 16,4%, Acer 9,9%, Lenovo 7,5%, Apple 5,7%.

Ces cartes devraient être capables de faire tourner tout les jeux d'aujourd'hui, mais la plupart d'entre eux uniquement en détails moyens ou faibles et avec des résolution basses. Les plus vieux jeux ou les jeux moins gourmands restent jouables avec de beaux graphismes.

NVIDIA GeForce GT 435M:

Une puce GF108 de milieu de gamme avec support DX11.

NVIDIA GeForce GT 420M:

La GT 420M est basée sur la puce GF108 elle supporte donc DirectX 11.

NVIDIA GeForce GT 540M:

Puce mobile basée sur la GeForce GT 435M avec des vitesses d'horloge légèrement plus élevées.

NVIDIA GeForce GT 630M: Plusieurs modèles avec une puce Fermi différente. Spécifiquement, on retrouve la GT 630M avec les variantes GF108/GF106/GF116, mais en gros on peut dire que  cette carte est une GeForce GT 540M ou une 555M. Une variante GF117 existe aussi, mais gravée en 28nm donc avec une consommation moindre.

Ces cartes graphiques de milieu de gamme peuvent faire tourner tout les jeux récents de façon fluide. Les jeux gourmands ne peuvent être joués qu'avec les détails réglés sur moyen.

NVIDIA GeForce GT 640M: Carte graphique de moyenne gamme de la série GeForce GTX 600M, basée sur l'architecture Kepler gravée en 28nm (GK107).

Intel Core i5:

460M:

Le Intel Core i5-460M est un dual core puissant pour portables qui passe de 2.53 à 2.8 GHz avec son mode Turbo. Il fait partie de la génération Nehalem (Westemere). L’Hyperthreading permet de double le nombre de processeurs soit 4 ici. Comparé aux Core i5-540M, le 460M ne supporte pas les instructions AES, VT-d et Trusted Execution et il a un Turbo Boost moins performant (2.8 contre 3.06 GHz).

2410M:

Dual-core Sandy Bridge avec GPU et contrôleur DDR3 intégré. Le CPU est cadencé à 2.3 GHz (Turbo Boost 2.6-2.9 GHz) et le GPU à 650 (1200 MHz Turbo).

3210M:

Puissant processeur Ivy Bridge dual Core, avec une carte graphique HD 4000 intégrée, avec une cadence de 2.5 - 3.1 GHz

Intel Core i7:

840QM:

Le Core i7-840QM est un CPU heut de gamme pour portable qui, avec le mode turbo, peut être cadencé entre 1.86 et 3.2 GHz. Il combine l’avantage des processeurs à plusieurs CPU à des vitesses élevées pour un seul processeur, si le programme ne profite pas du multi-coeur. L’Hyperthreading permet de doubler le nombre de cœurs, soit 8 coeurs.

740QM:

Le Core i7-740QM est un CPU haut de gamme pour portables (en 2010) avec un fréquence de base faible et un Turbo Boost maximum de 2.93 GHz (pour un seul coeur). Il a donc les avantages du monocore avec sa fréquence élevée et les avantages des quadcores lents pour els applications de montage vidéo par exemple. Comparé& aux Core i7 mobile, le 740QM ne possède que 6Mo de cache L3.

3612QM:

Processeur Ivy Bridge quad-core cadencé à 2.1 GHz avec Turbo Boost jusqu’à 3.1 GHz. Possède une carte graphique intégrée HD Graphics 4000 cadencé entre 650 et 1100 MHz sur un contrôleur mémoire dual channel DDR3. La spécialité du i7-3612QM est son TDP assez bas de 35 Watts contre les 45 Watt des autres quad-core Ivy Bridge (ex: 3610QM).

La raison pour laquelle tant de personnes possèdent des écrans de taille moyenne: cette taille n'est pas épuisante pour les yeux, n'a pas besoin de trop de courant et les ordinateurs portables peuvent rester tout à fait compacts.
