Critique complète de la carte graphique NVIDIA Titan RTX pour PC de bureau

Si l'argent n'est pas un problème... NVIDIA a annoncé la TITAN RTX en décembre de l’année dernière, et nous l’avons maintenant en test. Découvrez comment ce monstre de carte graphique pour PC de bureau se comporte dans nos tests, et comment il se distingue des autres GPU NVIDIA.

Après le lancement des cartes graphiques GeForce RTX avec l’architecture Turing de Nvidia l’an dernier, il est devenu évident que la firme allait également mettre à jour sa série TITAN. Nvidia a officiellement levé le voile sur la TITAN RTX début décembre l’an dernier, et elle arrive maintenant dans nos labos pour tests.

Nvidia place la TITAN RTX devant la GeForce RTX 2080 Ti Founders Edition, avec un nombre supérieur de cœurs CUDA, d’unités texture, d’unités Tensor et d’unités RT. La TITAN RTX possède la même fréquence de base que la RTX 2080 Ti, mais possède une fréquence de boost de 225 MHz plus élevée couplée à un bus et à une bande passante supérieurs de 66 Go/s. De plus NVIDIA équipe la TITAN RTX de 24 Go de VRAM GDDR6, ce qui est plus du double que la RTX 2080 Ti. Ce gain de performances coïncide avec une hausse de la consommation de 30 W, qui fait monter la TITAN à 280 W, ce qui est presque 100 W de plus que la RTX 2070 et 65 W de plus que la GTX 1080 Ti.

La TITAN RTX possède la même configuration de ventilateurs que la RTX 2080 Ti FE, mais Nvidia a ajouté une finition or à la TITAN, au lien des finitions argent des RTX FE. Notre modèle est délicatement orné de lettres TITAN RTX or, sur un cadre noir. Nvidia a retravaillé les ventilateurs par rapport à ceux de la TITAN X. La firme a remplacé l’unique ventilateur radial par deux ventilateurs axiaux, qui équipent également ses GPU GeForce RTX. Nvidia affirme que les deux ventilateurs sont plus efficaces à refroidir la chambre à vapeur de la TITAN RTX que l’unique ventilateur de la TITAN X, ce qui devrait permettre à la carte de moins chauffer et de mieux maintenir ses performances quand elle sera poussée dans ses retranchements.

La TITAN RTX utilise deux fiches d’alimentation 8 broches, et possède de nombreux ports. Nvidia a inclus trois ports DisplayPort 1.4, un HDMI 2.0b, et un USB C. Il est également possible de faire tourner ensemble deux de ces monstres grâce au NVLink Bridge de Nvidia, si vous avez environ 5 000 € à dépenser en cartes graphiques…

Machine de test

Nous avons basé notre système de test sur la carte-mère Gigabyte X470 Aorus Gaming 7 Wifi, couplée à un APU AMD Ryzen 7 2700X, qui possède de bonnes performances vu son coût. Pour le refroidissement, nous avons choisi le Be Quiet Silent Loop 280 mm AIO, nous avons intégré 16 Go de RAM G-Skill DDR4-3400, et nous avons installé Windows 10 Pro 64 bit sur un SSD M.2 ADATA SP900. Nous avons installé les jeux auxquels nous allons confronter la TITAN RTX sur un disque dur Western Digital de 2 To, et fait tourner le tout sur un écran Acer Predator XB321HK 4K.

Nous tenons à remercier AMD pour nous avoir gracieusement fourni le système de test.

Malheureusement, nous n’avons pas pu tester la Titan RTX sur un système Intel au moment de ce test. Signalons également que nous avons choisi le Ryzen 7 2700X plutôt que le Threadripper 2920X, le premier fournissant des résultats légèrement meilleurs avec la TITAN RTX que le 2920X. Gardez à l’esprit que c’est souvent le processeur qui freine les systèmes de test avec les jeux en 1080p et moins. Il faut s’attendre à ce que les processeurs Core-iX Intel de 9e génération surpassent leur équivalent AMD, grâce à leur nombre supérieur d’instructions par cycle (IPC).

Tests

Nous avons principalement utilisé les tests 3DMark. La TITAN RTX et le Ryzen 7 2700X pulvérisent les records précédemment atteints, de 35 % devant la RTX 2080 et de 25 % devant la TITAN X dans Fire Strike Ultra Graphcis en 4K. Gardez à l’esprit que nous n’avions pas encore la RTX 2080 Ti dans notre comparatif au moment de nos tests ; elle aurait offert une meilleure prestation face à la TITAN RTX.

Étrangement, la TITAN RTX a perdu de son aplomb sur les autres cartes graphiques Nvidia dans Cloud Gate en 1 280 x 720 pixels, ne faisant mieux que la GeForce RTX 2070 que de 11 %. Il vaut donc mieux jouer à plus de 1080p si l'on veut pleinement tirer profit de la TITAN RTX. De plus, notre carte graphique de test a complètement surclassé l’AMD Radeon RX Vega 64 dans 3DMark, faisant mieux de 59 % dans Fire Strike Ultra Graphics en 4K, bien qu’elle soit couplée avec le même APU Ryzen 7 2700X.

Tests de jeux

Alors que Nvidia ne vend pas spécialement la TITAN RTX comme une carte graphique de jeu, au vu de son prix exorbitant, elle délivre néanmoins des performances de premier de classe. Elle gère tous les jeux sans souci, et s’avère assez puissante pour faire tourner même les jeux triple A les plus complexe en 4K avec des graphismes élevés. Quelques jeux comme Kingdom Come: Deliverance et Assassin’s Creed Odyssey ont en moyenne fait moins de 60 FPS avec ces réglages.

La Titan RTX termine en gros de 30 % devant la GeForce RTX 2080 dans nos tests de jeu, et encore plus loin de la Radeon RX Vega 64. Nous nous attendons à ce que la GeForce RTX 2080 Ti termine en deuxième au coude à coude avec la TITAN RTX, même si elle peut la dépasser dans les jeux grâce à sa fréquence plus élevée.

Nous avons également soumis la TITAN RTX à un test de 10 minutes de The Witcher 3, en Ultra. Comme on peut s’y attendre, le carte graphique a géré le jeu sans sourciller, avec une moyenne de 129 FPS, et un minimum de 124 FPS.

Au final, la TITAN RTX possède des performances exceptionnelles pour le jeu, même s’il faudra encore voir quels effets les technologies Raytracing et DLSS auront par rapport à d’autres GPU, même si leur influence réelle sur les performances de jeu reste à voir. Pour l’instant peu de jeux supportent ces technologies, et le jury ne se prononce pas encore sur leur efficacité… Battlefield V est l’un de ces jeux, et si la TITAN RTX peut le gérer en 4K avec DXR élevé, le passage à une résolution de 1 440p donne une expérience de jeu plus fluide. En fin de compte, les améliorations visuelles viennent pour l’instant au prix de grosses baisses de performances, ce que nous avons également constaté dans Shadow of the Tomb Raider.

Démo Asteroids de Nvidia

Nvidia a également développé sa démo Asteroids pour montrer la puissance de ses GPU Turing. Elle n’est pour l’instant jouable que sur les GPU Nvidia RTX, et propose 350 000 astéroïdes parmi lesquels on peut voyager. La TITAN RTX tourne en moyenne à 50 FPS, avec un niveau de détail dynamique fixé à 2 160p, et le taux d’image ne descend pas sous les 40 FPS. Nous avons inclus une courte vidéo du test ci-dessous pour que vous voyiez à quel point la TITAN RTX s’en sort bien.

Performances logicielles

La TITAN RTX termine également en pôle position dans le test LuxMark, dans lequel elle surpasse la RTX 2080 d’au moins 36 %, et la TITAN X d’un énorme 55 %. La TITAN RTX possède un énorme avantage dans ComputeMark également, mais son avance est réduite à 15 % dans le test Mandel Vector.

Logiciels professionnels

La TITAN RTX devrait également s’avérer intéressante pour les stations de travail, vu sa puissance. Malheureusement, Nvidia ne certifie pas les pilotes GeForce pour les logiciels professionnels, ce qui donne un désavantage à la TITAN RTX face aux GPU Quadro actuels. La TITAN RTX est néanmoins performante dans les tests SPECviewperf par rapport à la Quadro M5000M, et surpasse son prédécesseur, la TITAN X. Les GeForce RTX 2080 et RTX 2070 sont généralement au niveau de la Radeon RX Vega 64 dans ces tests, même si celle-ci fait parfois mieux.

La TITAN RTX ne fera cependant pas de l’ombre à la série Quadro RTX, qui utilise également une puce TU102 et jusqu’à 24 Go de VRAM. La TITAN RTX coûte à peu près autant que la Quadro RTX 5000, qui peut actuellement être achetée pour environ 2 700 €. C’est une affaire par rapport aux plus de 5 500 € demandés pour la Quadro RTX 6000.

Nvidia a fait du très bon travail avec le nouveau refroidissement de la TITAN RTX. Notre GPU est plus silencieux au ralenti que les autres composants de notre machine de test, et ses ventilateurs ne montent que modérément quand on pousse la carte. En bref, l’expérience est ici à des années-lumière de celle fournie par la TITAN X. Les deux ventilateurs axiaux sont non seulement bien plus silencieux que l’unique ventilateur radial de la TITAN X, mais également plus efficaces.

La TITAN RTX maintient également sa fréquence de base sans thermal throttling ; elle n’est freinée que par son enveloppe thermique. Elle souffre de coil whine, comme presque toutes les cartes graphiques modernes, que l’on entend avec le jeu à partir de 200 FPS, et qui devient de plus en plus bruyant au fur et à mesure que l’on augmente les taux d’image. Heureusement, l’activation de G-Sync ou de V-Sync réduit plus ou moins l’intensité du bruit électronique.

Nous avons également soumis la TITIAN RTX à un stress test, durant lequel la température a atteint au maximum 78 °C - sachant que la carte commence le thermal throttling à 89 °C pour l’empêcher de surchauffer. Notre GPU atteint en moyenne environ 1 800 MHz pendant un stress test Furmark, ce qui est supérieur à la fréquence de boost indiquée par Nvidia. Les deux ventilateurs ne montent qu’à 2 200 tr/min., soit environ 59 % de leur vitesse maximale, ce qui montre leur efficacité.

En augmentant l’enveloppe thermique à 114 %, la fréquence monte à 1 860 MHz, même si la température monte de 4 °C, à 82 °C, et la consommation à 320 W juste pour la carte graphique - soit environ 40 W ou 15 % de plus que la normale.

Notre système consomme au moins 432 W durant le jeu The Witcher 3 en 1 920 x 1 080p, et monte à 452 W (cela directement depuis l’adaptateur secteur, ce qui n’inclut pas la consommation de l’écran).

Verdict

La NVIDIA TITAN RTX est actuellement la carte graphique la plus puissante disponible. Mais il faut jouer au moins en 2160p avec des graphiques élevés pour exploiter son potentiel : elle ne vaut tout simplement pas le coup si vous jouez en 1080p. La TITAN RTX ne sera disponible qu’auprès de NVIDIA, si bien qu’on ne pourra pas trouver des versions tierces moins chères ou overclockées. En revanche, il y a déjà des RTX 1080 Ti tierces, qui consomment jusqu’à 380 W, et qui surpassent la TITAN RTX. De plus, la nouvelle puce de NVIDIA est actuellement deux fois plus chère que la TITAN X, ce qui remet son gain de performances en perspective.

La NVIDIA TITAN RTX est la carte graphique pour ceux qui veulent le mieux de ce qui peut être acheté. Elle ne peut surpasser une RTX 2080 Ti overclockée et bien moins chère - elle coûte plusieurs centaines d’euros de plus.

La TITAN RTX a tout d’un GPU haut de gamme, et son nouveau refroidissement est très discret. Cependant, vous l’aurez compris, ce n’est pas elle que nous recommanderons aux joueurs, parce qu’elle est trop chère par rapport à la RTX 2018 Ti, sans s’en démarquer. Elle n’est pas non plus idéale pour servir de carte graphique pour station de travail, même si ses 24 Go de VRAM GDDR6 sont à la hauteur, et qu’elle est bien moins chère qu’une carte Quadro RTX comparable. En bref, la TITAN RTX satisfera une niche parmi les joueurs, mais d’autres GPU du marché moins chers délivrent des performances comparables.
