Tout comme le 35 W Ryzen 9 4900HS est la version légèrement plus lente du 45 W Ryzen 9 4900H, le 35 W Ryzen 7 4800HS est la version légèrement plus lente du 45 W Ryzen 7 4800H. AMD a introduit la série HS spécifiquement pour les petits châssis comme l'Asus Zephyrus G14, tandis que les ordinateurs portables plus grands comme l'Asus ROG G703 peuvent utiliser la série H à pleine puissance.

Si l'on se base sur notre expérience avec l'un des premiers ordinateurs portables Ryzen 7 4800HS disponibles (Asus ROG G15 GA502IU), les performances du processeur brut sont impressionnantes, avec seulement 10 à 12% de moins que le Ryzen 7 4800H moyen dans les charges multi-fil. Si l'on considère que le 4800H est déjà exceptionnel, cela place le 4800HS sur un pied d'égalité avec de nombreux ordinateurs portables Comet Lake-H de 10e génération plus coûteux fonctionnant sur le Core i9-10980HK comme l'Asus ROG Strix Scar 15 G532LWS ou le MSI GE66 Raider 10SFS. Il ne faut pas négliger les avantages de la performance par watt et par dollar de la série 7 nm Zen 2 HS contre 14 nm Comet Lake-H.

Aussi grand que soit le Ryzen 7 4800HS, son principal inconvénient est qu'il ne représente qu'une goutte d'eau dans la mer par rapport à la poignée d'ordinateurs portables Core i7 et Core i9 parmi lesquels les utilisateurs peuvent déjà choisir. Les constructeurs ont été lents à adopter les processeurs AMD Ryzen pour leurs ordinateurs portables de jeu, probablement parce que la création de ces unités de gestion des stocks nécessiterait des modifications internes majeures aux cartes mères et aux logiciels existants. En revanche, la mise à jour des unités de gestion des stocks existantes fonctionnant avec des processeurs Intel de la 9e génération vers des processeurs Intel de la 10e génération serait plus simple.

Pour l'instant, les utilisateurs n'ont pas beaucoup d'options en dehors du milieu de gamme Asus GA502IU s'ils veulent un ordinateur portable Ryzen 7 4800HS.
