The Dell Precision 5520 is a capable work machine and can offer a stylish alternative to OS X or Windows 10 workstations. When a manufacturer provides drivers (either backported from a newer kernel or supplied for the PC in question), the seamless experience makes you want to lean back and enjoy the OS. Frankly, I wish more PC makers would do what Dell did and offer their hardware to consumers, prepared and equipped for a Linux experience.

Using the base principles of the XPS lineup, the Precision 5520 is one of the most portable and well-designed workstations we’ve ever come across. With the use of high-quality premium materials, the laptop is not only super rigid but also thin and light. And thanks to the thin screen bezels, the machine fits into the 14-inch category with ease. The input devices are comfortable as well and we are not talking only about work on the go. We weren’t expecting anything less with this price tag, though.

Perfectionnement. Le Precision 5530 est, de bien des façons, ce que le Precision 5520 aurait dû être. Alors que cette machine mise à jour souffre toujours de thermal throttling, la stabilité du processeur et les performances ont été améliorées. La carte graphique a également été mise à jour sans trop d’effet négatif sur la chauffe. Au final, l’expérience globale est bien meilleure.

Configuration options extend to a Xeon W processor, Nvidia RTX A3000 graphics and 8TB of storage, the keyboard is exceptional and the build is very solid. There are a few downsides, however. The 720p webcam is average, battery life is lacklustre, and those seeking more muscular configurations will need to dig deep into their pockets. Working with the 4K screen I would struggle to get a full day's work out of a full battery charge. Even the base model in the UK costs £2,352.64 (inc. VAT) and its Core i5 processor, integrated graphics, non-touch FHD+ screen, 8GB of RAM and 256GB of storage are far below what most workstation users will require.

Do people still use the word “smitten” anymore? I have a huge crush on the Dell Precision 5760 workstation, and it grows the more I use it. Its 17-inch display is captivating, endlessly immersive, and just a joy to work on. The 5760 is sleek and doesn’t feel at all like it weighs 5.5 pounds. From its 0.34 inches thick, tactile deck to its massive clicky keyboard and touchpad and 8-plus hours of battery life, I could offer endless platitudes for the Precision, but I digress. I will add that within its test group it is the most affordable workstation, starting at just $2,059, and should you be in the market for a workstation, the Dell Precision 5760 is an excellent option.

Now that we’ve seen what the Precision 17 5770 is all about, it’s time to summarize all the information and try to help you make a purchase decision. Before we start, you have to know that this laptop is fairly expensive. It has all of the vPro goodies from Intel, as well as the optional certifications, should you pick a model that comes with a dedicated GPU. In our experience, the RTX A2000 happened to work just fine, although it was 3W shy of maintaining its 65W power budget. This machine comes with one of the best sounding speakers in the Windows world, which is courtesy of its XPS legacy. The input devices are also very good, while the fingerprint reader and the IR face recognition scanner do help with security. And while having four Thunderbolt 4 connectors is excellent, and utilizing a full-sized SD card reader is useful for photographers, we really miss the dedicated USB Type-A ports and HDMI connectors. Don’t be scared, though, as the company provides a USB Type-C to USB Type-A and HDMI dongle inside the box.

The top-quality build, super power and incredible battery life, all packed into such a slim 14-inch design, makes it one of, if not the, in my opinion, best options for taking professional-level performance on the go. On the bright side, you can configure it with 64GB of LPDDR5 RAM out of the factory. Another seeming bummer situation is revolving around the port selection. You get four Thunderbolt 4 connectors and a MicroSD card slot. This means no USB Type-As or HDMI on there. However, Dell provides a USB Type-C to Type-A and HDMI dongle inside the box. After all, the XPS-like visuals, the fantastic build quality, and the comfort of use make the laptop a good purchase. It is a great little machine for people working with not-so-complex 3D manipulation, photography, and videography. If the high price is not too offputting for you, the laptop is really worth it. Again, that is if you are in the right niche and if you’ve decided to skip the 14-inch MacBook Pro.

I like using the Dell Precision 5680 because it feels like a slightly bigger, beefier version of the elegant, streamlined laptops I've come to expect from Dell. With its easy-to-carry frame, big screen and strong performance it's probably the closest thing I've yet seen to an OLED-equipped Dell XPS 17, and it will be for the foreseeable future—or at least, until Dell decides to sell an XPS 17 OLED. But as much as I like the Precision 5680, it's hard to see a lot of cases where I'd recommend it to someone over another laptop. Processeur basé sur l'architecture Comet Lake (4e génération de Skylake) pour les ordinateurs portables lourds et volumineux. Intègre six cœurs de processeur cadencés à 2,8 - 4,7 GHz (plus probablement 4,2 GHz avec 6 cœurs) qui prennent en charge HyperThreading. Fabriqué selon un processus amélioré de 14 nm (14 nm++). L'Intel Xeon W-10855M prend en charge les fonctions de gestion vPro, TXT et SIPP et est la version professionnelle du Core i7-10850H avec une vitesse d'horloge légèrement supérieure.
