Courte critique de la station de travail Dell Precision 5530 (Xeon E-2176M, Quadro P2000)

Perfectionnement. Le Precision 5530 est, de bien des façons, ce que le Precision 5520 aurait dû être. Alors que cette machine mise à jour souffre toujours de thermal throttling, la stabilité du processeur et les performances ont été améliorées. La carte graphique a également été mise à jour sans trop d’effet négatif sur la chauffe. Au final, l’expérience globale est bien meilleure.

Nous y voilà ! Dell essaye depuis trois ans de proposer la parfaite station de travail fine et légère, et le Precision 5530 est sa plus grande réussite à ce jour. C’est la machine que l’on aurait souhaité que le Precision 5520 soit, et c’est agréable de voir de telles améliorations d'une génération à l'autre.

Le Precision 5530 n’est cependant pas sans défauts. Le thermal throttling est toujours un problème, même si c’est dans une moindre mesure par rapport au 5520 (ou par rapport aux autres stations de travail de ce type). Les sollicitations élevées mettent l’appareil à genoux, mais non sans une lutte acharnée. Mais vu que les stations de travail sont normalement destinées à supporter de longues périodes de sollicitations, cette réduction des performances du processeur et les températures élevées de la machine sont comme un trou dans l’armure du Precision 5530.

Il est à noter que le Precision 5530 est un appareil de niche. A cause de son format, il ne possède pas toutes les fonctionnalités présentes sur de plus grosses stations de travail, comme les séries ThinkPad P ou ZBook de HP. Les possibilités de maintenance sont limitées, la sélection de ports réduite, et l’absence de version avec RAM ECC peut être bloquante pour certains. Ceux qui voudraient une expérience de station de travail sans compromis devraient regarder du côté de la série Precision 7000 de Dell, ou des séries déjà mentionnées ThinkPad ou ZBook.

Le reste est tellement bon qu’il éclipse presque les problèmes de throttling. L’écran est tout simplement excellent, et l’un des meilleurs jamais vus en dehors de la série MacBook Pro d’Apple. Il est lumineux, net, ses couleurs sont vives, tout est excellent. Le châssis est toujours très bon. La qualité de construction est excellente et le design fait mouche (surtout la couleur Onyx brossé de notre modèle). Peu de portables arrivent au niveau du Precision 5530 en termes de design, et encore moins de stations de travail sont aussi séduisantes.

Le Precision 5530 est sans aucun doute l’une des meilleures stations de travail ultraportables existantes. Certains constructeurs se concentrent sur les performances tout en ignorant le design et la portabilité. D’autres se focalisent sur la finesse, laissant de côté les composants professionnels. Le Precision 5530 est à ce jour le meilleur équilibre entre ces deux conceptions, et si Dell parvient à régler le problème de thermal throttling, le Precision 5540 de l’an prochain pourrait être la station de travail ultraportable parfaite. Cependant, à plus de 3 500 $, le Precision 5530 n’est pas pour les personnes au cœur (ou au portefeuille) fragile. Bien joué, Dell.
